  • Motor racing celebrates many a hero, but it also mourns its many victims. The 1930s saw their share of both records and danger, drivers and their mechanics risking anything to make their cars faster. High Velocity - a film about speed.
Thrills and spills have been part of racing since the car was invented. But in German racing history one day stands out above all - 28 January 1938. Carmakers Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union met early that day to break the world speed record on a stretch of the Frankfurt-Darmstadt Autobahn. The drivers were Rudolf Caracciola for Mercedes-Benz and Bernd Rosemeyer for Auto Union, intense rivals and both at the peak of their sport.
First out in his aerodynamic Mercedes-Benz W125, Caracciola clocked 432 km/h setting a new world record for public roads. Just hours later Bernd Rosemeyer took to his Auto Union Streamliner in an attempt to top that. But just around the 9 kilometer mark disaster struck. Rosemeyer lost control of his vehicle which careered off the road. Thrown clear when his car somersaulted into an embankment, Rosemeyer was killed on the spot.
For the Nazis and the German media of the day Rosemeyer had died a hero’s death for the fatherland. But why had the accident actually happened? A technical problem? Was it the weather? Consensus was hard to find. Caracciola’s record was to remain unbroken until 2017.

The aerodynamic potential of that AutoUnion speed challenger was never completely grasped by the engineers who built it. Had they taken more time to study the car they would have realized that venting air beneath a relatively flat pan at such high speeds can radically change a vehicle's at the worst possible moment.

@@jasoneade7978 the auto Union Typ C Stromlinie like is rode in 1937 was, in fact, one of the first ground-effect cars in history. I also believe what caused the crash was an aeroynamic inbalance caused either by those air vents the video showed os simply due to a plate of the flat bottom having been blown off because of the increasing pressure building inside the car's body (with no outlets, only one inlet). The moment the ground effect is disrupted, the car went airborne.

The T80 is one of the most spectacular cars I have seen . it is one of the last displays in the amazing Mercedes Museum fixed to a wall with other speed cars and prototypes . but we will never know if it would have worked . yes the Auto Union speed car had sort of stumbled into Ground effects but still lacked the one key part to make it work , the under body profile was to flat , the Crash is still a mystery but you could see from the few pictures taken the one tire was shredded .I mean if Auto Union added these side skirts to try and reduce drag but then unknown to them they gained some extra down force thanks to the ground effect , I very much doubt the tires would be able that extra load over two runs .
it would be very intresting to run a 3D modeled cars created from the original plans and run it through a modern aero program, and see what the data tells us.

I worked on the Blue Flame parachute systems at Deist Drag Chutes, Burbank, California (now Deist Safety). Too bad they didn't have the high-speed chute deployment bag on display to show how it and the 100ft of dragline were deployed. I recall repairing the ballistic nylon deployment bags and getting them shipped back to the salt flats for those record runs.

Its almost comical expecting that pushing the frontiers of aerodynamics could ever be "safe". If it was perfectly predictable, nobody would have been interested. We still don't fully understand it. No need for conspiracies. Pushing the frontier is always risky. Even in Recent times, Mercedes had 2 blow overs even with all the computing power of the modern era, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and advanced wind tunnels. Not sure that interviewing journalists instead of engineers told the story very well. Those vents on the bottom of the car are called "NACA Ducts". Simple matter to model the design in modern software. I suspect it created too much lift in combination with gusting crosswinds. End of the day, its the driver that made the decision to run, and the risk was his to take or not - and he took it. The world needs heroes.

@@54raceman Racing is not the same as the road, it's governed by private sanctioning bodies who make the rules. Those rules evolve and are enforced privately through agreements with teams, drivers, officials and stakeholders, the governing body insurance usually covers death while injury is normally down to personal insurance. Motor racing has become more organised, drivers have for the most part been listened to and manufacturers know it's not a good look to have failures that result in serious incidents, this is what I was referring to.
