How can you tell if a timing belt has been sitting on a shelf for years or is new?

I would snag up a four cylinder version of that in a heart beat. Man that's in great shape. Too bad engineers made that bad 6 cylinder, interference engine with a rubber timing belt..

@@tonymontana3742 A good service shop would put a sticker on the plastic timing cover showing the date and mileage when it was done. Or like Scotty said, if there is nothing, you can take off the two plastic covers and inspect the belt itself (or have your mechanic do it). I have a 2008 Honda PIlot EX-L, now with 252k miles. I got it at 225k miles and immediately changed the belt, tensioners, water pump. I suggest using Aisin or Honda brands (Aisin makes them for Honda). I got mine at Rock Auto - it was $4xx.
2008 AWD was the last year Honda Pilot made without the VCM. That is the one of the reasons I picked it. Mine did not have a tow hitch, which is what I wanted. I added one myself. The car runs great. I use it for towing a trailer. The car is good for towing too.

I got a VCM disabler for my Honda Odyssey because it was running rough. It cost like a $100. It was one of those good ones from Canada that disables itself if your engine temperature gets too high. Not one of those cheap ones from China that can't do that. Now my Odyssey runs on 6 cylinders all the time and it runs smooth.

I'm not sure that the industry has improved that whole variable displacement of cylinder deactivation since Cadillac's 8-6-4 engine disaster. They still have the same problems. If you have a bad design it doesn't matter who builds it or how well you maintain it the thing just isn't going to work. I would try and deactivate it if possible.

We owned a 2003 Pilot for 15 years- great vehicle, but had the infamous rust at the rear wheel opening. I did a body filler repair which came out decent for my OCD. Honda removed the inner rubber wheel opening trim on the newer models which eliminated the build up of road salt.
