Another three songs by Peter Gabriel that will make you feel just as happy as this one are: Big Time, Solsbury Hill and In Your Eyes. These three leave you jumping, dancing and smiling by the end of the song, just like Sledgehammer.
Peter has an extraordinary, unique voice and these little “breaks” you noticed are very characteristic of him.

My mom played in a softball league and my dad coached, and I remember riding home from the games really late at night in the summertime with the windows in the car rolled down and this song playing on the radio. It was a popular radio hit when it came out.

This was definitely the 80s. This went to number 1 all over the World! It was still early days for music videos and MTV had only been going for a few years but was huge and very influential. Amazingly, back then, they almost exclusively played music videos and concerts, rather than the dross they output nowadays. Anyway... the video was a sensation and became something of a milestone in the history and development of music video. Combined with the killer track and with both song and video chock full of sexual innuendo, (it's all about sex btw) it became one of the biggest selling singles of the decade! :)

This song is actually from the mid-nineties, but Peter Gabriel was always pushing things a bit forward musically, he also was the first musician to use sampled sounds (with a Fairchild CMI sample synthesizer) on a record. He is an incredible musician, and the technique used in this music video was also top-notch that time and a huge success. He is also the first one who invented the "gated reverb" drum sound, that was used on snare drums on uncountable record productions thereafter and a signature sound of the whole pop era of the eighties. He also got a Grammy for the first album that he published on his own music label, a movie soundtrack he wrote. He also got five further Grammies, a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscar nomination in his career. He is also an inventor in the field of multimedia experiences and computer game music and the main sponsor and head behind the idea of the 145 WOMAD festivals that are meant to push world music. He is also a human rights activist and speaks openly about his major depression and six years of psychotherapy to raise awareness for mental illnesses. Absolutely an incredible artist and human being.
Also his live shows were extremely creative and some say he was better than David Bowie when he was his support on tour. Which is crazy, if you know how incredibly good David Bowie was on stage ...
Which brings me to a recommendation of a video of another legend of pop and rock music.
    David Bowie - Heroes

This is my most favourite video of all time. PG is one of my favourite artists too and for me, his peak was his solo career from the period mid-80s to mid-90s, including, of course, this classic.
I love how the video symbolically begins and ends with depicting the start and end of life (fertilisation and embryo growth, then later PG sitting down in the chair to 'sleep' and then 'rising up' into the stars and waving goodbye), and continues the motif of reproduction and innuendo/imagery throughout, but also has hilarious visuals like the chicken dance, the vegetable face, and so on!
Also, it was a clever choice to use stop motion and claymation rather than the CGI of the time (as used, for example, in Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" which was only a year before this song, but looks so dated in comparison). As a result, the only bit that looks dated is the section where PG and the dancing girls/crowd are, with clothes and hairstyles clearly of the 80s.
