I transitioned from CD to vinyl about 12 years ago. A couple years before the huge resurgence. I think the issue is the industry is catering more to the sport of collecting over people that actually want to listen to music. I'm in groups where people brag about acquiring records of mediocre albums that cost them $200+ just because the artist only pressed 500 copies. I just want the album in my collection, I don't give a shit about an OBI strip or splatter. I think it's great that everything get's reissued nowadays, heck I've even replaced OGS with a reissue for financial reasons, but stop with the bullshit.

Collector's editions of LPs can be a lot of fun as long as they're under $50. The late 70's & 80's were great for oddball releases that didn't need a special day (especially UK bands and labels), and they're now some of the favorite fun items in my record collection.

@@alm5693 I can relate with this. As I said above, I'm generally disinterested in specialty formats, I'm interested in the music. I got the "Detroit Edition" of The Stooges For the a;bum itself and for the extra takes/demos. I got Lou Reed's 3-sided press of Set The Twilight Reeling because it happens to be my all-time favorite late-period Lou Reed album. That it happens to have a neat-looking fourth side is, well, neat but of much less interest than the music on the album. I'm a really big Voidoids fan and never had Blank Generation on vinyl before I found the copy I've got which happened to come out one year for record store day. I was just as happy when I found a copy of Destiny Street Remixed (which has no association with RSD, as far as I know). I'm sure you can relate with the idea that there are always bands and albums that I like, and I'm always looking for that music to add to my collection.

Collectors are a different breed, and I love that they will carry all that heavy vinyl to record shows on the slim chance it might help their collection, because I sure wouldn't. Last show I went to , I talked to a guy who only collected children's albums, because of the colorful outside, not the music. Another guy had just paid $1500 dollars for a 45 single and was super happy. Said he only knew of one other such record to be in existence , but it was cracked, so had diminished value. Then he added, in a conspiratorial tone, that rumor says it doesn't even play. It was some kind of Do Wop fifties record.

Fun fsct: other than the re-press of Nirvana's Hormoaning which came out for RSD a couple of years ago, there hasn't been a single solitary release that I wanted that I wasn't able to get AFTER the big day. Blank Generation by Richard Hell and the Voidoids? I was elated to find it a couple of years after the fact (in part because I didn't know it was reissued as a 2LP on RSD). The 2LP reissue of The Stooges' first album? Found that well after the fact too. Basically, other than that Nirvana EP, I'm happy to read about it when it's scheduled and then hunt for some after the fact.

This is my first RSD experience and I was really excited to learn more about this exclusive day and be part of the community, but I was really let down and deflated after going through the list. Not a SINGLE record jumped out at me. It can be a fun day to hit up your local shop, just to meet other collectors, If you have not experienced one before I would say you should for sure check it out just go mid day, no need to wait in line.

I'm guessing that Husker Du's Longhorn album is from when they were first starting out or else a tribute to Jay's Longhorn Saloon in Minneapolis - arguably Minneapolis' first notable punk music club and the first place where local bands got gigs that weren't at a houseparty or a rented room. They also booked early tours by Elvis Costello and The B52s. It may have been the first place that "I Don't Like Mondays" was performed. The band hadn't worked out a full arrangement yet so Bob Geldoff and Johnny "Fingers" performed it as a duo for a Boomtown Rats encore.
Personal note: I was just parking my car to go to Jay's Longhorn when I heard on the radio that John Lennon had just been shot dead.

The Husker Du Longhorn Tonight is kind of a historically significant show. The Jay's Longhorn bar was one of the seminal Twin Cities bars and this show from 1979 is supposed to be Husker Du's first ever show and the one that minted them as the notorious hardcore band they would become. As a former Minneapolitan, this is a release that is pretty interesting to me. As long as they did a good job cleaning up the tapes. There have been some recordings floating around from this show that are like 50th generation cassette dubs. LOL.

I would agree on jazz, where the interplay with audience response very much shaped the music. But with all recordings today where people might not even be on the same continent, much less playing in the same room at the same time, things are different. People at a concert want to hear the record played live, with no or little artistic spur of the moment variations. I was at a club and a player put out a long and highly artistic solo turn, so I gave him a few claps in recognition of the fine effort. I was shushed by a near by woman, who corrected me by saying the song isn't over yet, like it was a symphony performance.

One huge misstep for me is that they have an album from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo but nothing from George Harrison. If you are going to have three former Beatles solo albums why not all of them?
Another that I just discovered is that in the UK they have a Thin Lizzy offering and a David Bowie album... both artists I would stand in line for... but those are not being made available in the US. I could understand if it were Cliff Richard and Anthony Newley who were both big in the UK but not so much in the states but Bowie and Thin Lizzy each have mass appeal in the US too.

I don't know if its on the US list, but in the UK we have Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous from the Hammersmith Odeon, London, 15th November 1976. I bought the 8 CD super deluxe box when it was released last month. And every show is fantastic. But I was really disappointed that it wasn't released on vinyl. I would give my middle nut for that if it appeared. So this is some consolation. But lets talk about the elephant in the RSD room - PRICES! Some of the prices being touted this year are effing crazy. £480 for a John Lennon 9x10" vinyl set. 4 tracks to a disc. No! The Sweet. Now they were a fantastic band. And I've bought their RSD rarities LP's that've come out the last couple of RSD's. But this year its a 3-track 12" single. For almost £30. Again, NO! The Pogues double B-Sides album. £58. WHAT??? A couple of Bob Marley 7" singles. One is £15.99. The other is £30! Twice the price. And probably the most overpriced of all - The Police - Every Breath You Take 2x7" singles for £28. Even the Thin Lizzy double is £40. But I loved them, and they were at the top of their game on this record. So I'll definitely be getting that. There are a couple of releases that look good value for money. Like the Bowie Deram Label 7" singles box for £30, and the British Ska revival band The Selecter double live, for £27. But it seems the going rate now for a single disc LP is between £30 and £40. Thats far too much. Incidenally, The Cure - Show is definitely a pic disc. It is definitely the best looking one they've released to date. But Its still a pic disc. So, NAH!

I buy from an RSD shop a week later when they put the remaining stock online and generally get what I want that way. If there's anything particularly scarce then chances are I'll be unwilling to pay the asking price anyway.
This year I'll pick up the Motorhead live album as that series has been really enjoyable. Will take a look at the Pearl Jam if the price is OK. Might pick up one or more of the separate Doors singles (ie. without the mini turntable) depending on price as I don't think they are on the UK list.

My problem and most would say that it is a good problem to have is one of my local locations will allow me to pick from that list and hold everything that I pick that they ordered so, I don't have to wait in a line.

This isn't lousy at all, I don't get offended when certain courtesies are handed out to reviewers who get items for free, wealthy people, taking advantages of other loop holes/tax breaks while others can't, or friends of businesses doing favors for their friends by giving discounts on cars and homes while others payfull price or close to it, or bartenders not charging for drinks while other pay or night clubs letting certain people in, while others wait.

@@Brown_Sound first of all you made an assumption that I was talking about Chris, which was a bad mistake on your part because I never mentioned Chris in any of my examples by name, nor was I talking about him specifically, which was actually your first mistake. Chris is a big boy and he can speak for himself and he doesn't need you to do that. Chris actually took a swipe at me with his statement, but I wasn't offended personally.
I talked about the realty of life and as much as you may be offended, you can't deny that what I said isn't happening and will continue to happen even on a much greater scale than I mentioned. I could have given many, many many more examples. Life or my examples don't stop happening because you want them to or you want them to be offensive. My examples are offensive because you wanted to be offended but my examples are never the less true and occur every single day.
Are you actually going to tell me that if you qualified for an IRS tax break, that you wouldn't take it because no one else got it or that if you were going to the newest attraction in a new city or town and you knew someone and they were going to let you in while the bouncers made other people wait outside would you say, no thanks I will wait with everyone else and no I won't take the tax break unless everyone else gets it??? Notice the question and not the assumption.
Regardless of my examples being offensive to you, your reaction is actually offensive to me. Your third assumption about my humanity and empathy is also offensive and should cause you to take a hard look in the mirror, showing your elitist attitude, and I could also make the same comment about your humanity and empathy and maybe some of that will drop in your lap as well and by the way your comment could make some feel, unsafe!!!
The problem is when someone dares to state reality, someone will always considers themselves to be offended. We need to stop finding ways to be offended and making assumption that are not based off of any facts just because we want to be offended. Learn to respect other peoples opinions and differences, while they respect yours and concentrate on the common goal of why we watch Chris's channel in the first place, the hobby and his great reviewing style. Oh and by the way, I have no problems with Chris at all.

Record store day is not for normal consumers, because it is not especially fun. It is for lifestyle vinyl consumers who desire to get in line before the store opens and feel buying records is very important to their happiness. I am solidly pro happiness, but for someone not aware of the scene, if you decide to check it out and get there when you feel like it, everything will be picked over and you will be looking at the bottom of the barrel stuff that even the enthusiastic early shoppers, caught up in contest and victory, left behind.
This event was originally designed as a special sale to get people back shopping when record stores were failing , and special enticement recordings were offered. Times were tough and this event was a sincere attempt to lure shoppers and provide a life line to the loyal retailers. As the old song says , " time changes everything"

agree with your take on the ramones... while I am not big on RSD anymore, I mean does anyone else here remember how not a big deal the first or second RSD were, I remember going to my local record store a few days before it, as I stopped by several times a week, and they were like hey independent record stores are doing this thing and we are going to have some limited stuff.... it was nearly all pressings from independent labels, I bought a bunch of sub pop, epitaph, and touch and go 7" records, I mean it leaned heavy on the 7" stuff and that was primarily what I collected back then, and I feel like it was geared towards this kind of collector, at some point in time it switched to the major labels, and of course the larger stores like amoeba probably get the lions share of some of these releases. Also not sure if there anyone else has noticed but I did work at a record store from 2012-2020, and I still sell records, there are a lot of smaller secondary distributors that will have some of these releases like a year down the line that will be "limited" presses of say 1,000 and the prices will be cheap, and they have lots in stock for a while, I believe that there are many records that the RSD people say are limited to a certain amount that are pressed waaaay more, and yes these have the same hype sticker and are the same color variant, not sure what this is all about but it is a bit shady.

Sometimes later, I managed to save enough to buy a cd player because one of the albums at the time I really wanted was only released on cd.
Nope, not going, most of what is on the list is no (really) interesting to me, plus what's the point of getting in line, waiting to find out that when it's your turn, they don't have the records you want anymore (or they never had it in the first place, yes it happened to me).
I know some independent record store also do the RSD sale online so if I really want a records I'll go that way but again, this year... nope, nothing for me.
