      As a Finn, your simplification ignores the warnings we had. Don't jump straight to an icy lake from Sauna or you might get a heart attack or drown. Many people cool down a bit before jumping to ice water. And for some people, enough cooldown is walking in freezing temperatures from sauna to shore and end of the pier.

      Great video, but you have made a lot of mistakes that you could have just researched in about 3 minutes. Hrv is the measure between two successive beats of the heart, not the difference between rhr and he while exercising. Also, as many told you, you got the breathing, and the technique wrong. Please do more research when putting out videos, because it can affect people that wayhj and blindly belive it.

    Wim does NOT say “blow all the air out”. He specifically instructs to breathe in fully and then let the breath go (he doesn’t say to fully exhale). There IS a difference.

      Yes there is a difference. I've heard an interview with a Dutch MD who was also a Wim trainer and may have also heard it elsewhere, that the exhale should be ~ 70% of the inhale duration.

    I'm 60. I do the WH breathing, cold showers (2 minutes), meditation, intermittent fasting and moderate exercise with recovery periods. All these have helped me. I agree with you listen to your body. MODERATION.

      This is pretty much my schedule! I feel like it works very well for me, i feel healthier every day mentally and physically. Currently 21 years of age, been doing this for only about a week, but seems like I will simply start living like this.

      That routine is exactly me too with the addition of cutting my carbs from the 'white' carbs. Two years in and I'll never stop! Went from sickly to super healthy! My blood work is 100% improved!

    I'm blown away by how powerful Wim Hoff's method is and I feel so so much better since I started doing this. The cold showers are hard, but I start breathing rapidly to bring up my body temperature. But, very quickly I feel so much better. Less stressed psychologically for hours afterwards. And I've noticed my thinking is clearing up. Brain fog is less, breath is stronger, and I hurt less overall. Joints, muscles, and psychosocial pain is significantly less. I'm loving this therapy that costs Nothing and benefits the body.

      I kind of cheat with the cold showers…. I start with a warm shower than I turn down the temperature down till the hot water is off. My body adjust better this way.

      How do you do your cold shower? Is it strictly cold? Is it cold at the end of a warm shower? How long do you do it for? Did you work your way up?

    This is one of the most helpful Wim Hof analyses I have ever seen. Why?
    1) You are not "pro" or "con". I have seen a lot of people just "excited" for the method. I have seen people who were just plain skeptical. You are looking deeper.
    2) You are doing careful evaluation. I have heard a lot of stories and a lot of cheerleading. But your evaluation explains a lot of why things work that no one else I have heard has pointed out.

      Yes, some are cheerleaders for Wim’s method, but this gentleman does not explain Wim’s method accurately. He’s not a trustworthy source of information.

    As a distance runner, I can attest to the fact that the Hof method can completely increase athletic performance. Month 3, no days off. Best days are when I'm tired or out-of-it... it's incredible.

      Keeping a high pace 90 rpm.
      This will increase your VO2 max

    Minor point here, but Wim says “breathe in fully and let it go” so he doesn’t push the breath out, he just breathes in deeply.

      You first need to exhale forcefully few times (this lowers your ph, by exhaling CO2 more than usual) and then you inhale deeply few times (to oxygenate the body), then jump on cold water.

    I'm facing open heart bypass surgery soon and have been doing the 3 round Wim Hof breathing exercise. My coronary arteries are blocked to the point they can't use stents to open them up. So now I'm making a concerted effort to do this daily. My theory is by increasing the blood oxygen saturation it helps make up the deficit of the clogged arteries. I bought a pulse oximeter that shows the %O2 and the pulse rate. When doing the breath hold at the end of each round, I notice my 02% is 99-100% especially on the 1.5 minute hold. I'm also getting my lungs ready for general anesthesia and post op recovery. I really welcome any comments from health professionals on my approach. Cheers to all. Bob

      I am not a health professional, but as you are facing open heart by-pass surgery soon i assume you have spoken to one recently. I you have watched this video and also listened and understand the Wim Hof method you should realize that it is seeking out stress on purpose. I do not think seeking out stress is a good think in your condition. I urge to think twice and actively consult your doctor about this. This means calling them and discussing your ideas. Don't just wait for someone to reply on your comment you placed on a random youtube video to get this kind of advice. Just hope your hart is still beating to enable you to read this.

      Hope your surgery went well. People now are using stem cell therapy to clean out arteries! Also, shock wave therapy is being used to clean arteries!! I know that’s not going to help you but pass it on. I believe though you can still use the stem cell to build up that heart and arteries!! R 3 stem cell had patient testimony on using stem cell to clean his arteries! He

    I would recommend watching wim’s video on how to perform the breathing, you do not repeat the last two stages as indicated in the beginning of this video, you must repeat the 30 breaths each time, for 3 cycles.

    Ive been doing the Wim Hof method on and off for a couple of years . it makes me feel so alive and well , within and mentally strong . Wim says to breath fully in but not fully out , he says just let the breath go , then fully in again and so on , for abut 40 to 90 + breaths , depending on your experience level , the last breath let it out and hold without air in your lungs , the longest i have held is 4 minutes but it takes a lot of practice and while holding strange feelings happen like being disconnected from reality its weird , Wim says you activates the pineal gland , So if your feeling depressed unhappy , lifeless , besides personally knowing the Lord ,the Wim Hof method will fix it , i vouch for it , Cold showers after the breathing exercises take it to a whole new level

    I guess a lot of others have also pointed this out, but I'm compelled to add that you DO NOT fully exhale, you just let go of the diaphragm to equilibrium. This is a small but critical point of the Wim Hof method, which helps balance the PH of the body correctly.

      @@VintageGentleman1947 correct. It's pretty simple really to describe. 30-40 deep inhales/relaxed exhales followed by a breath retention (without full lungs) followed by 10-15 second recovery breath where you breathe in fully and hold. Then back to the 30-40 breaths.

      I did the guided breathing exercise Wim has on youtube it was not clear not to fully exhale and the graphic isn't helpful with that either as it shrinks to where it was on empty. The most important thing he does say is appears later in the video he said if you need to breath than breath don't keep holding your breath. Don't force it.
      The ambiguity is dangerous if it needs to be stated before the guidance "we are going to inhale 30 times when you exhale just let the air go but do not fully exhale." Then it should be explicitally stated.

      I keep hearing of this nose breathing? I don’t understand. Who doesn’t breath through their nose? I though everyone basically breaths through their nose by default.

      Its good to say "Wim Hoff Breathing" but we should also recognize that he learnt this from Yoga, so that people will have more access to all these types of breathing techniques.
      There are tons of breathing techniques in yoga meditation, Wim Hoff has said in one of his videos that he learnt from yoga. I my self is doing very similar techniques for over 25 years.
      I have not gone to such extremity but it's the same. I just do not want people to be side tracked and start on following only this technique as there are many other available and easier than this one.

    I was able to implement Wim's technique when I had inflammatory lungs due to the virus.
    I couldn't breath in much, only short breaths - any more and it would hurt, doing this technique helped immensely with staying calm and solving my lack of oxygen due to inflamed lungs.
    Now it makes more sense why it was so effective.

      I did Wim breathing twice a day when I had the virus. I had been doing it before too. It helped me a lot. I got through it quickly and it never got to bad. I also felt much better when I did the breathing.

      I’m battling with inflammation and Covid toes post, Covid 19 infection (I got double Moderna). I just started doing Wim Hof breathing and cold showers for 9 days now. Time will tell.

    I have the WHM app, and do 5 rounds every day (40 breaths) - got to 3 minutes the other day! He has exercises on the app. as well, like doing push-ups without breath. This has helped with my Meniere's Disease, as it is making me feel stronger and calmer. I lie, propped up, on the bed. Wim Hof is *the* man!

      When using the app you can choose how many breaths you want to do. I did 25 breaths rounds for about a year daily and now I’ve been doing 35 for almost a year. I do a a minimum of a two minute hold on my first round, by my fourth round I make it to over three minutes and have been able to make it to four minutes a few times. I challenge anyone to try grounding for ten to fifteen minutes and then do as many pushups as you can, you’ll be amazed by how many pushups you will be able to do.

    Thank you Dr Ekberg. I came across the Wim Hof breathing method recently and then found a video on using it in conjunction with doing push-ups. At the time, I could only do 20 push-ups in 1 stretch. The next day I did the 30 breaths and to my amazement, I did 30 push-ups. I now do this every other day and yesterday got up to 50 push-ups. It's incredible. I had thought about the cold shower, but I'm a softie in the present cold winter, so I'm happy to know that fasting, which I do anyway, is a suitable substitute.

    The dizziness and tingling comes from oxygen deprivation (Bohr effect). Your blood is saturated with oxygen, but the oxygen doesn't get into your muscles and tissue because the CO2 is missing. Once you hold your breath the CO2 builds back up (that's why you can hold your breath for so long after the hyperventilation breathing.

      Just clarifying. Specifically, isn’t the dizziness and tingling more to do with the respiratory alkalosis (high PH) due to the Carbon Dioxide deprivation? Rather than the oxygen deprivation? It’s been quite a while though since I studied human physiology.

      @@Kakatawaga O2 and CO2 are in a constant balance. by heavy breathing out, you push the CO2 level to an extreme low (regarding concentration curve), while your O2 level is normal. BUT the bodys reflex for breathing is triggered by the CO2 concentration. Getting to this "alert level" in CO2 blood concentration from this extrem low you created in the first place takes a while. But while the CO2 builds back up, your O2 conc. is going down... and the increased timeperiod without oxygen intake leads to a critical low O2 saturation and this is the reason you get dizzy or even pass out.

      @@Kakatawaga This is correct. The dizziness comes from vasoconstriction of the cerebral arteries due to low levels of CO2. The tingling and mild cramping sensations is due to the respiratory alkalosis as it disturbes the contractile function of muscles as it reduces the amount of ionized calcium.

    I love this method! I think the public should be aware, however, that if you have a history in your family of aneurysms then you must be very careful with going between hot and cold too rapidly. It can cause an eruption if you have inherited that gene of aneurysms.

    After 3 minutes and up (of full retention) you reach another level of consciousness.The mind is transcended and the upper bodies activate.The state is euphoric and you can reach it every time by practice.I think you can safely say that the longer you maintain your breath the more your consciousness awakes BUT it has to be done in perfect harmony,both the inhale and the exhale,not to be forced

      I agree, I’ve been doing this now for 12 days and love it, can’t wait until tomorrow. We just have to listen and be kind to our bodies, we are not all the same. I stopped one of my breathing rounds because I felt dizzy, maybe that day I was extra tired or something. I do now have stone cold showers. I’ve noticed that I can go somewhere else during the breathing technique, I get a little lost when I’m holding my breath as to which way I’m gonna go next, in or out. 😂😂

      Its good to say "Wim Hoff Breathing" but we should also recognize that he learnt this from Yoga, so that people will have more access to all these types of breathing techniques.
      There are tons of breathing techniques in yoga meditation, Wim Hoff has said in one of his videos that he learnt from yoga. I my self is doing very similar techniques for over 25 years.
      I have not gone to such extremity but it's the same. I just do not want people to be side tracked and start on following only this technique as there are many other available and easier than this one.

    As said before, when you do the Wim Hof method you don't fully breath out. You Inhale fully, from the stomach all the way up to your brain and then you exhale just by letting go, NO force, not fully exhale. I think it's very important that the information is correct. All the other information was both inspiering and interesting. Thanks!

      The description of the Wim Hof breathing method Dr. Ekberg gives is quite wrong, sorry to say that. Started watching this video with good expectations for some medical background of the WHM, but stopped watching after realising those mistakes.

    Wim Hof metod is great, it works just like excercise; intense stress during a short time. Excercise should also be short and intense, 5 min high intense interval training is much better than a 1h steady pace jog.
    Also cold showers are great, really gives you energy. Also Wim actually recommended 2-3 min cold shower for the health benefits, not 15 min. Training is good for health competing is not.

      It's not possible to get same benefits from high intense interval training as 1h jog. In low heart rate training you cause stretching effect to heart muscle. Higher heart rate just makes it stronger, but it's capacity doesn't get any bigger.
      There is nothing new in HIT or crossfit type trainining, such things has been tried out in 1950s, and studied thoroughly long ago. Don't bring any good results for sports. Of course you see great benefits if you do only two months study, which is it exactly how long you get benefits from high intensity training. Then it plateaus.
      5 min training time is ok if training sucks like HIT does, but when training is fun, I would rather do it for 1 hour or more.

    Two of my gurus in one video, excellent! The one thing I've always considered underemphasized by Wim is the fact that he has been on an OMAD diet for most of his life (although not keto at all, a vegetarian). Many who follow him do not realize just how much benefit Wim's diet brings him and believe that following his method alone will result in the same amazing health Wim has. In reality you need to do both, just like he does. I really wish Wim would be louder about his life long fasting and include it in general as part of his teachings, as in my opinion IF has helped him just as much to achieve his many world records as his method did. In that sense, Wim is also a Dr. Ekberg follower :-D ...and for myself, I follow both.

      I eat carnivore and follow Wim Hof and I don’t have any issues with him being a vegetarian. Over two years doing the WHM and not planning to quit till the day I die. My maximum breath holds sometimes is four minutes.

    I have to say that this is the very first logical explanation of the cold therapy. I've been doing cold water swimming over that last 13 years (can't do it only when the lake freezes). I know from my experience this is extremely beneficial (e.g. I've not had any noticeable viral infection, like cold, flu, etc. over the last at least 10 years) but did not quite understand the mechanisms that were responsible for that. Now many things clicked into their place :) Thank you for the explanation...

    Alexandra David-Neel learned this from a Tibeten monch during her travels to Lhasa (early 1900's). They got stuck outdoors at winter and used breath to keep alive.

    Overall this is a very informative video, very clear explanations and well worth watching. Dr Ekberg does make some errors describing the Wim Hof method. Here are the errors. Wim clearly states only do this breathing seated or prone, never standing or driving or in water because of the risk of passing out. He never states to "breathe violently", only to do what feels natural to do, "no need to force it". Others have been noted during the 30 breathes Wim says "fully in, then let it go" not exhale all the way, and at the end of 30 to exhale and hold "until you feel the urge to breathe" then "take a deep breathe in and hold for 15 seconds after which you start a new round with 30 breathes etc. Not to hold again. One feels that perhaps if Dr Ekberg did Wim's breathe work himself he might not have made these errors.

    Wim Hof method does NOT repeat the long breath holds up to 10 times.
    It's 30 or so deep breaths 'fully in' with relaxed exhales 'let it go' (not forced and not a full exhale).
    Then you hold the final exhale for as long as is comfortable.
    When you finally need to breathe, you inhale once and hold for 10-15 seconds (no more).
    Then you begin a whole new cycle - i.e. back to the 30 breaths.
    This whole cycle repeats as many times as you want.

    I’ve done this hundreds of times by having a unwanted anxiety attack. Studies show the breathing changes around 30 minutes before people have an anxiety attack. Some of my worst anxiety attacks gave me the most peaceful feeling after I just assumed it was because everything was so chaotic during the anxiety attack.

    This is interesting and helpful but not actually 100% accurate to the Wim Hof Method. The penny dropped for me when I realised there is no "blowing" out on the out breath, it's a let go. I was doing it wrong on my own for a couple of months until I got it. Just let it go, as Wim says. No blowing out at all. So actually the chest area doesn't cave in, but remains kind of firm and upright, with the belly distended, (which may relate to tumo breathing). This increases internal heat somehow, a whole area not explored in this video. Been cold showering for 10 months, after a warm shower to get the contrast, which is well explained here. Found that indeed, if the breath is practiced correctly, internal heat is increased, and found really cold showers to not feel cold at all after a minute or two. In fact, thought there was something wrong with the taps the other day, but measured the temp and it was 7.2C. In my experience there are many real benefits to cold showering - and you feel like a million dollars afterwards. That internal heating is something I'm exploring more, as it appears to be affecting my health overall too. Good luck everyone!

      I got same 7C. Been doing it for a year now . Its great. 1 day I went into the ocean without a thot of temp
      and chilled in there for about 20min,then my friend said ok let me go in too, she got out within 3s saying that's the kind of temp ppl freeze in, only after that that did i realise it might b too cold. I felt nothing b4. Only going to start with the breathing, I was always lazy to do it. And you are right after a minute the water is not cold anymore, like swimming. Raises energy levels insanely, and we'll since cold showering I react differently to stressors, literally nothing gets my reaction. I become aware of the situation, and let it go
      To watch how it plays itself out. Much like how i surrender to the cold.

When in the shower At first ofcasue u hyperventilate, then to breath normally ur breath has to be deep and controlled , u surrender to the cold. Do not do breathing technique in the shower. U have to be relaxed, sitting or lying down. In shower breath deeply not shallow

    I’m around 60 . Every year I have a ultrasound of my heart and every 5 years I have a 3D heart scan with dye.
    I think people whatever age should have their heart checked before attempting high stress activities or extreme athletics.
    I enjoy both however I do it responsibly.
    I feel great after my Wim Hof morning routine. My energy doubles!

    The gym I used to go to in the town I grew up had a cold dip. I really loved it because I could go from the sauna into it for a couple minutes, then back into the sauna again, and so forth. Sadly, none of the gyms I've been to in this area have one, and the shower's not quite the same (and it's across the wet area from the sauna and steam room.)

    This video is one of the best I've ever seen at explaining HRV, the WIM Hoff methodology, and the sympathetic, parasympathetic nervous system. I was trained in a type of breathing that creates coherence like described in this video. And it's based on deep, rhytthmic breathing. This sets the heart into a smooth wavelike pattern called coherence, where all things are possible!

    Been doing Wim Hof's breathing for a year and a bit now, trying to expose to cold as much as possible... never been sick once yet. And before annually, I'd have at least 2 - 4 colds / flus. This works.

    You might need to adjust the video info: according to other wim hof breathing videos, the breathing is made with 30-40 forced breathe-in-breath-out then after the last breath out you hold as much as you can then inhale and hold at most 15 seconds, then begin a new cycle of forced breathing, and you do this 4-5 cycles.

    From watching Wim Hof demonstrate his breathing method, it sounds different than what Dr. Ekberg is proposing here. Lying in bed before I go to sleep at night, I do a set of the 30 breaths and then instead of not breathing after exhaling, I hold my breath after inhaling for as long as I can. Then I do another 30 and hold it in again and sometimes do another 30 breaths. It is amazing how long you can hold your breath when you do this. My record is 3 mins and 19 seconds. Amazing for me! I will practice breathing out and then holding my breath.

    Such good information, and free for everyone. I fast regularly, take cold showers for a minute, swim outside in cold water and jump in the sauna, I love water contrast therapy. I train, but allow plenty of time for recovery, and take regular walks around my local park. I sleep much better and rarely have a low mood if I practise all of these habits. Best of luck everyone.

Your video today anwered some of my questions regarding ice baths and I resonnate wirh your suggestion of hot and cold. I.e.     I agree with Dr . Ekberg, I start my day on an empty belly and Wim Hoff breathing. I do it forcefully after the first 10 breathes by compressing the abdominal muscles to expel air from the lungs. I’ve done this for a several months now and find you truly relax on the retention phase only if you’ve carried out the breathing phase to your maximum capacity. Unless your a physical mess I don’t believe you’ll collapse or feel faint. Maybe just a little light headed until your used to it. Whatever the benefits , I find it a nice exercise to start your day with!

    Wim hof breathing calls for deep inhale, then releasing (not forcing out) 30-40 times, then breath hold (i.e. 2-3 min), then repeat the 30-40 breaths in round 2 etc... slightly different than described in this video... just saying... anyway, great video-thanks 😁

    Lot's of valid points made, but it really takes a lot away from the points made that Dr. Ekberg actually got the breathing method wrong from the get go. Come on man. Wim specifically states that you should not breath "all out". Just fully in and let go. Breathe in 100% and out about 70% or so. I have done so for years.

    I used to get sick 4-5 times a year, and as an asthmatic it would inevitably hit my chest badly. I started having cold showers at the end of a hot shower and I rarely get sick. Been this way for 20 years now

    Hello Dr.
    I wanna share this with you.
    I have a spinal cord injury, T1. Ive had many episodes of light hipothermy and by some reason whyle i was having one of those horrible episodes i was folded wrapping my arms around my chest, shivering and exhaling warm air inside my sweater i found out that holding my breath for a while was easing my pain a little bit. So as naturally as it is i was holding it even more, and deeper. And in a few minutes, the cold was going away!! What a feeling! Ever since i do this when im in a situation i feel cold. Sometimes no matter how much clothes i have, it happens, specially if im not being active.

    I have a neurological disorder and benefit enormously from cold showers. I always gradually turn the temperature of the water down to avoid the shock. It helps to allow the body to adapt to the cold slowly and means it’s easier to achieve my goal of 2 minutes per day.

    So glad you decided to cover this one! Very helpful. I did WH most mornings in 2019 and loved it but wasn’t sure how to think about among my other activities like fasting, lifting, HIIT to hit a good spot in the U shaped curve. So I stopped but I am going to mix it back in ASAP while dialing down a few of the others. Thanks!

    I am very happy doing Win Hoff therapy! I suffer from tinitus and dizziness, and doing it the dizziness dissappeared. I could walk without any problem. I read a heart doctor's statement about the benefits of it. Also, he said that if we breathed correctly, we would not get sick.

    Really great presentation, easy to understand :) I love how you present like a weather reporter lol and how you suggested other methods like fasting and HIIT to essentially get a similar effect

      Nope. Nothing will give you similar effect.
      Fasting wont have you in altered states of consciousness and have you feeling every cell in body vibrating and achieving apoptosis in 10-20mins.
      Its delusional to compare it to other things.

      I miss the sauna in the public baths in the UK, and the freezing cold shower afterwards. All the public baths have been shut for months because of Covid, to be honest that is the one of the things I miss most of all.

    The Wim Hof 30-minute Breathing technique is in 3 10-minute stages. Wim guides one through the breathing exercises. On the first healed breath it's healed for 1 minute. Wim gives one the option on each stage to the hold the breath longer if one chooses. In the next 2 10-minute stageson on the last breath is healed 1 1/2 minutes.
    Wim Hof guides us through the breathing exercises. I couldn't holed my breath for more than 30 seconds... We start and go at our owne pace. I'm started on my 6th year. I simply ❤ it.

    I give you a 💯 for the explanation of how and why it works and a 30 on your understanding of the WHM as a whole.
    Having said that, I watched this video because of the algorithm because I just finished my first 72hr fast, felt amazing and had a soft safe landing thanks to your channel and knowledge. So a huge thanks for your work!! I am a fan

    9:15 not true. Wim Hof method tells you to let your lungs breath-out to the capacity of relaxation. So it means you don t force air out as much as you can, you just exhale normally, there s still air in the lungs at the end.

      Dr.Ekberg, I noticed that too (when U described Win’s method). No exhaling fully. Just relax and see what air comes out by itself before full inhale again
      How does it change your perspective?

      ​@@drekberg in fact, it does change the physiology. notably, it still can work, but it makes the execution inefficient and makes inducing the key mechanisms more difficult/unlikely, for no reason at all. I understand you may not be aware of those things as you did not discuss the physiological mechanisms very much in the first place.

    I'm curious about something,why Hot water(70+ degrees C) and cold water (0 degrees C) give you a burning feeling,I mean the hot water is obvious,but why extreme cold also burns you?

      That reminds me of an old demonstration they used to do. Get 3 bowls of water 1 hot 1 cold 1 room temperature, put 1 hand in the hot and the other hand in the cold and keep them there for a while then take both hands and put them in the room temperature bowl at the same time. It's wild.

    Thank you Dr Ekberg, this was very informative.
    I’ve been doing the breathing now for one year (lying in bed waking up) and taking a cold shower afterwards. I do just a cold shower every morning. I am 79 and feel healthier than before and in balance.
    My question is: is it better to have a warm shower and finishing with cold, in stead of just the cold shower? Please let me know.

      based on what he said, I think if you take a steaming hot shower then immediately a cold shower that's better to just taking a cold shower.

    I LOVE how I feel after the cold shower. I feel sooo good. Not cold. Just good. Comfotably warm and energized. It makes my whole day happier and I'm better adjusted with all the situations of the day. I even feel good and calm in presence of challenging people and enjoy them on my own grounded terms. I dont have many arguments in my own mind.
    The shower is not ice, but I have rolled in snow intermittently while hot tubbing. I'd like to try more cold water dips in nature. Maybe in Svalbard!
    I've loved the cold ever since I was very small though. Growing up in Minnesota, I often felt very good not wearing my coat in sub zero temps--not all the time--just sometimes. Sometimes I would get a chill or knew i felt like i could get one snd then id wear my coat happily. My parents made me put my coat on when I didn't need it though, thereby training me to never trust my instincts or my very wise body. Bless them. They did their best in this way and I get it❤
    However, I'm getting back into my body over the past few decades of my adult life.
