Why Sonic Dream Team is Apple Arcade Exclusive

- Early previews suggest Sonic Dream Team could be the best Sonic game since Mania. So why is it an Apple Arcade exclusive?
Sonic Dream Team is developed by SEGA HardLIGHT, the mobile development studio behind such hits as Sonic Dash (not Sonic Rush, no matter how many times I say it) and Sonic Racing.
The studio's purpose is to develop mobile games, so while the fact that their latest title isn't on console may upset fans, this game was never meant to be anything else.
It's a testament to just how well HardLIGHT have done with the game that it's made so many people upset, the game looks far more inventive and interesting than anything from Sonic Team this year.
As for why this mobile game is locked onto Apple Arcade, this is a reflection of changes within the mobile gaming sphere and Apple's efforts to create a viable subscription platform that solves many of the problems with the traditional mobile gaming revenue model (namely, microtransactions).
This game's exclusivity may be bittersweet, but the game is entirely the product of the environment that has led it to be exclusive to Apply Arcade.
Thanks for watching!
Lots of love,
Kotor

I am REALLY tired of people dissing Sonic Superstars. Its nowhere near as bad some are saying it is. Calling a "budget mobile" is both nonsensical and frankly insulting. Especially since players keep finding neat attention to detail animations and flourishes here & there. I like the look of Dream Team, but I feel that propping it up should not come at the expense of putting down another. Especially if its unwarranted.
Totally agree with you. Plus, it isn’t really that bad of a game.
THANK YOU.
Superstars aesthetically isn’t anything special tho
It’s just ok at best
Sonic 4 Episode 2 had a better artstyle I’ll be real 💀 imo
You are a true Sonic Fan sir.
No..........@@rando6677
Just one small addition: there is a native Windows version of Sonic Dash, it was released as a UWP app during the Metro UI/Windows 8 era. I'm not sure if that version was still maintained, but it was essentially the same as the mobile version, but with a larger FoV.
Bro, imagine if Super Mario Wonder was exclusively for Apple Arcade 💀
Funny cos Super Mario Run was an Apple Exclusive almost like, yes it happened before with Nintendo before!
@@mechashadowMario Run was also on Android.
I think games like Sonic Dream Team are a good thing because they show that mobile games don't have to be glorified digital slot machines. Being exclusive to mobile isn't a problem, but being exclusive to a streaming service which is itself exclusive to Apple devices is.
@@jeremoople I can't believe you said that with a straight face while not realising this exact same thing is probably going to happen to Dream Team lmao.
Go back to the Super Mario Run reveal video and you'll see at the time it was also released as an Apple exclusive again because Apple also gave them the bag.
It got ported to Android years later but this mindblowing fact seems hard for Sonic fans to process really.
@@mechashadow I genuinely didn't know Mario Run started as an Apple exclusive because I wasn't that interested in it to begin with. No need to be so snide about it.
@@jeremoople Fair enough, I'm just sick of seeing Fans and Sonictubers alike not understanding that Exclusivity can expire. And that Apple Arcade games have come to other platforms too.
We've already been through this with Sonic Colours Ultimate as well.
Sonic doesn’t need to compete with Mario fans, they share the same audience. Gamers just want quality games from genuine developers. Business suits just ruin franchises.
Sega: we want Sonic to surpass Mario... * whispers * in the mobile market
Bro, the reason why this game even exists is because of Apple.
That made me chuckle, but yeah, what @bowtiefries said. Also bowtiefries sounds like a carnival food I'd try 🤔
Jokes aside, I believe things will level up in the future. Fingers crossed!
I hate the idea of games being locked behind a subscription service. It's bad enough that you need NSO to get NES, SNES, and GB/GBC games, I'm not paying extra to get the N64, Genesis, and GBA games. And at least those are games I can play other places (like the previous ports and virtual console)
Nintendo Switch Online is necessary for online play and save backups which is vital for modern gaming expectations, so it makes it tolerable service as it has a wider net. Apple Arcade is not enough value for people just wants it to be a one time purchase.
@@PillowEgg Cloud saves are nice but I haven't actually needed them yet..
And the online support is still kinda bad, even for how cheap it is...
I can see a reason how it could be bad, such as any company can terminate anyone's account at anytime, it's literally in the terms and conditions, even though you followed the rules.
I've not lost any digital gaming accounts, I have read it happening to a person following the rules.
We can have a discussion about how good/bad it is moving toward a rental society, and that’s fine. But mobile games have been virtual for their entire existence. Subscription services have allowed more earning opportunities for small developers, and a better gaming experience for mobile users. Apple subscriptions are easy enough to pick up and drop, it’s easy to buy as needed.
I do however agree that we should be able to buy the individual game license like we could back in the day if we wanted just a single game like in the pre-arcade days.
@@Westernsunsetproductions Last thing you said is the problem for me. I literally only want this game sonic dream team. I don’t care about any of the other games. It bothers me to think like let’s say I subscribe, play it, and unsubscribe. I then have to pay again if I decide to play it again. I mean I have pay every month If I keep too. I think it’s BS. We should have the option.
The thing is the entry barrier ⁶to playing this isn't as bad as people think. There are Apple TV units that support Apple Arcade. I've been considering getting a £60 used unit myself and using one of my many Bluetooth controllers.
Between this, and Rayman Mini, I'm kinda curious about Apple Arcade as a platform as to what other games it offers.
I'll see how people get on with it. I'm not lacking in games to play right now and it's worth remembering we've only seen a minute long trailer with very short snippets of gameplay.
I can't be mad at this anymore than I can be at Final Fantasy XVI not going Xbox or PC.
does Airplay work as well to cast the phone screen on tv?
To add to the “Sonic Stadium says Apple was directly involved with Dream Team’s development” yes, that is now undoubtedly true; at the end of Dream Team, at the part of the credits where Sonic games rest on the SEGA logo, Dream Team has “DIRECTED BY APPLE” above the logo. This could mean a number of things, but it means one thing for certain: outside of publishing as well as funding the game, Apple was involved directly in some way, shape or form with the actual design and development process enough for SEGA to add that text. I’d say that reduces the chance of a port anywhere else down to close to if not zero, even more so considering SEGA Hardlight’s three other Apple Arcade titles haven’t left exclusivity at all and one of them launched on the service 4 years ago.
I love watching this channel bc it feels like an alternate dimension where brick fanatics perused gaming instead of lego. Just find it weird that you never cross promotion the two channels 😅😂
Brick Fanatics? What is that?
@@VideoGameStoryTime It's probably another RUclips channel or something.
@@VideoGameStoryTimeAnother youtube channel rather talking about the lego company
Maybe the people who are disappointed about this are justified, but at this point I'm convinced there's a standing army of Sonic fans who are always ready to judge a new game by what it isn't.
To be honest I feel like they would do that because they think they’ll get the game they want if they keep heckling every time
Thanks for your Amazing story telling i still wish sega just listen to us about wanting sonic dream teams on desktop and Android as well
This reminds me of JRPG game that have a mobile game and it's exclusive on the iOS devices. Well it's also on Android but only in Japan. no clue why the Android version isn't on worldwide
In such case the issue could be with outsourcing of translation and ports. For example, company A made the game, company B secured rights to western release and translated the game on their own and company C secured rights to Android port. Company C couldn't use translation made by company B so they didn't, they just released Japanese port and that's it.
@@Gnidel IDK if that's true because company of that game has their own translators. They had an anime 10 years ago and Funimation had their casts to do the dubs and they are now making OVA's which it only have the Japanese dub now and I think the company are getting greedy. Sorry I replied late I didn't had enough time to respond
When I saw your background during the clarification segment, I was like "hang on, that looks familiar..."

Looking forward to playing this on my Apple TV. Do people not know that iPhones and iPads and Apple TVs can use Bluetooth game controllers?
basically a summary of the entire video in two words, business strategy
It's an Apple Arcade exclusive because Apple paid for it basically.
Dream Team Deserve a Remaster on Switch, & PS5.
1:12 good point
I’m going to play it because I own Apple Arcade but I don’t even care if it’s a mobile exclusive game, but I wish it wasn’t an Apple Arcade exclusive game.
Why though? Why is Apple Arcade not allowed exclusives? No ones ever complains about Microsoft or Nintendo or sony having exclusives.
I heard Pokémon Go, let go a lot of their employees, because they didn't get enough millions, because people weren't spending much money.
Think about it what other free Robo sonic game is there think about it on mobile
i have it on my mac mini computer thank god i knew it is a an apple arcade exclusive which you have to subscribe man.
I was so excited
It’s great that’s it’s on Apple Arcade I can play it on my phone and on my Mac with the retro-bit Saturn controller 😃
Yeah but you can only rent it. It’s locked behind a subscription fee. I don’t like that. I have Apple devices too and I want to buy and own the game. I think it really sucks to have to pay money every month to play one game.
Can Apple arcade be used on pc? ... Mac I guess
Just Mac, the game should be ported eventually though, I suppose just not on Android 😊
@@superduperbrain2001it won’t be ported eventually to other services it’s an Apple Arcade exclusive.
@@copyer9088 Tons of Apple Arcade games get ported over to pc or console
@@orca717 well not this one I’m afraid
Exclusives do work, they are used to force people not to buy Apple by making sure they have no access to games which could run very well
I love video game story time
I'm disappointed no shadow in the game🥺
The thing I don't like about Sonic Dream Team isn't that it's a mobile game. It's not that it's part of a subscription service. It's that you HAVE to have a subscription on ONE product line. If it was also on Android but for a flat fee, or also on Switch, Sonic's target demographic would be able to play the game. SEGA must realize that people aren't going to buy a Mac or iPhone and join a service for this game, right? Sonic fans are mostly on Switch and PC.
Answers:
A)Sega will obviously only make a good Sonic game when they will definitely profit from it. In this case, theyre funded by Apple and already got paid. Doesnt matter if its downloaded by the millions or just hundreds.
B)Mobile downloads can jack up the "sales" of Sonic games. Remember the dubious "1 billion" Sonic games sold they claimed before that included mobile downloads?
12:29 when was ff7 on Nintendo? Definitely a PlayStation game first but the sonic team is missing it if you think imma buy an apple device to get Apple Arcade to play that game. That’s a big miss. The game looks great but Apple Arcade just doesn’t have enough to pull that off
I think apple should acquire sega and make console or service
16:41 I would disagree with you on this one. I think sega has gotten exactly what they wanted: the media attention from outrage, and the steady revenue stream from the contract.
They’ll also have fewer Sonic fans perpetually wining about how they don’t like this or that about the game, and instead complaining about how much they wish they could play it.
I’d say sega is very much winning.
Dude is not that hard to get. Apple wanted a Sonic game for Apple Arcade. Sega ask Hardlight to do a new game. Hardlight up their game pitching a free roam 3D platformers with multiple characters. Sega looks at it and greenlight it. Obviously mobile games are not in the main sonic development pipeline.
People keep using the chu-chu rocket as a prediction for what will happen to this game.
While yes, it’s worth the discussion. On the other hand, Sonic has more draw than chu-chu rocket. Most people didn’t even know that game existed.
Once the exclusivity contract expires, I imagine sega will put this out other places.
why not for andiord
Guys, this game would literally not exist without Apple Arcade. If you are an Android purist, then don't play it, it's not even mainline.
Edit: I'm an Android purist btw.
Naw I'm chillin' push comes to shove I'll have a subscription using my mom/older sister's device. For like a month if I wanted it. Or I'll wait and see if they provide it on steam or something! ✨
Sony merged with Apple. With complex history of Sonic copyright ©️ is definitely present. You have Sonic the blue hedgehog 🩵🦔 and then you have Sonic the hedgehog 🦔 💙. That’s why they have different villain 🦹”names”. 😂
Im still mad at Sega
Well... See the positive side. The game will most likely suck anyway
@@Domenic1407 Sigh..you might be right
@@Domenic1407Yep, it probably might.
@@thedraftingax5963what makes you say that?
@@NO.10162 Well, like the past Sonic games I'm worried that the game might end up like Frontiers or any of the other mobile games. Some of them weren't that good but for the other ones, they were great and very fun to play.
Android owners must be pissed.
As an android owner, I am
As an Android owner, I'm surprised my phone plays Pokemon Go.
It's impossible to tell what runs perfectly (Go) and what struggles to even hit a playable frame rate. (Two actually free games, no ads or purchases, that look like 1996 PC titles.)
Say what you will about Apple's evil plans to force expensive upgrades on their customers, but it must help developers justify targeting a higher spec device.
I own an android device and I would just like the game to be ported over to the Switch. To me most mobile games are garbage.
Not me, that, and I'm too broke for starters! 😂🎉
I'm just mad it's on Apple. And the subscription service for mobile is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It has the same problem has NSO. i don't want everything. And i sure as hell don't want to pay a subscription service to play it.
You can get month one free. If you’re an Apple user, Apple 1 is more worth the money than an arcade subscription on its own.
And? I still have to buy an phone that does everything I already can do with mine for double the price. Getting games I'd rather just buy and actually own for a month doesn't make up for that.
Apple TVs are relatively inexpensive used. And they have more utility than an extra phone.
Then you can grab the KOTOR and the superior versions of Sonic 1/2/CD and play them with a controller on the TV. and arcade has some other good games that have been slept on. The Apple TV app is pretty cool too cause if you’re searching for something specific, it’ll search all streaming services. If yours are already hooked up, it’ll shortcut you there too. It’s small, but it’s a nice feature.
I know that doesn’t change that the game is subscription based, but so is half the tv we watch. Apple Arcade as a subscription service is a good one. I like having no ads and no micro transactions. It makes it nice just to play random time killers on the train or even just a long wait. It’s nice to jump around and not buy anything specific. If I’m not using it, I turn off the subscription. It’s super easy to turn it back on and then off again.
wait, people seriously feel like pokemon should have its own sub-genre?!?!?!
I don't know if I agree or disagree with them but it's been cool seeing the formula as a foundation to experiment with in something like Cassette Beasts.
Though I feel like the demon recruiting mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei predates Pokémon's approach of recruiting Monsters. However Pokemon popularized it more of course.
monster taming games predate pokemon, and are great, and it's nothing new even semi recently with stuff like fossil fighters, spectrobes, digimon. Competition is good and drives them to not rest on their laurels
My issue isn’t with it being a mobile game or even that it’s on Apple devices. My issue is it’s locked behind a subscription pay wall. Apple Arcade seriously I hate this new trend that we can’t own games anymore! I think the idea that I need to subscribe and pay every month to play one game is total BS and the most anti consumer thing I’ve seen in a while. It’s especially bad for sonic fans who have waited decades to be able to play as Rouge or Cream again.
Its on apple cuz apple funded it
Oh my gosh. It's still 4 minutes. I'm getting so bored. No offense, but the 4 minutes of the video feel like 20 minutes.
There's no excuse for what Apple did.
Since when has it been a bad thing for a hardware/software developer to have an exclusive game? When Sonic was released, we HAD to buy a genesis to buy it.
@@Westernsunsetproductions It's because of competition. Apple has no competition!
@@Westernsunsetproductions And also, that's bull crap. You're justifying an overpriced Apple devices PLUS the subscription service all for one Sonic game. ONE!
It’s not a justification because it doesn’t need a justification. That’s my point. Apple wants this game to sell arcade subscriptions to people who already has a device for it. Just like Netflix bought sonic prime to sell Netflix subscriptions. Is there also no excuse for what Netflix did? Is it needed? If there’s a market for it, Apple will put arcade on windows and other devices. They did it with music and tv.
@@Westernsunsetproductions Hopefully. But, if it's permanent, I will not be looking at this game. And I'll completely avoid this game. I've already been avoiding Apple, tho, I keep getting suggestion for Apple devices.

Honestly the levels look bland and incomplete in this games . Who ever said Sonic superstars looks mobile is blind lol
So it's not by sonic team and also not aimed at gamers. Why bother? im definitely not playing action platformers on a touch screen lmao, that's just sad. The art looks like Sonic Colors threw up a box of crayons. I guess Sonic is just doomed to be a cash grab whore now.

@@anthonyyawtwumasimensah197 I'm really disappointed. In multiple ways.

Say what ? Surpass MARIO ? WHO BARELY EVER GOT A SIGNIFICANTLY BAD MAIN LINE GAME ?
I'm sorry Sega you're straight up stupid
Learn game design again, give Sonic what he deserves (speed and dexterity, not MUST KEEP FINGER ON BOOST TO BE FAST horrible mechanics).
I don't care what normies that never tried hard any game in their life have to say, Sonic fan games are better right now, at worst tied on musics but best one are better than Frontiers in terms of gameplay, that's shameful.
THEN and only THEN, you can try to surpass Mario.
In short, Nintendo is not perfect, maybe the devil, but a devil that has A LOT MORE respect towards their mascot.
From someone that played the same amount of both, prefers Sonic and still can't say its games are better.
