It still hasn't moved from you touching the controls, has it? :P
This is something I want to try as an aviation enthusiast.
I stayed in a airport? themed hotel?
do you mean Airline themed?
Surprised you mentioned DiCaprio's movie "Catch me if you can" and not "The Aviator"
Those were the good old days I remember the food and service was better than most restaurants and it was such an absolute joy to travel by plane . Passengers behaved , aircraft they were technological marvels everybody looked forward to airframe as much as the holiday destination they were going to . I was a little kid when I read about SSTsupersonic transport passenger aircraft proposed by Boeing and Loclheed as we already had Concord and Soviet built Tu-144, Boeing was proposing its 2707-2000 and Lockheed its L-2000
American Congress cancelled America's SST program .
Honestly iv seen loads of youtube channels show such luxorious hotels from around the world but Tim shows you hotels which are quirky, strange, luxury yet affordable even, hotels which you wouldnt have ever thought about, keep it up Tim 👌
Wow, thank you!
This isn't so affordable. It runs around $500 a night. If you are flying out of JFK, or as I do, work on the new Terminal 6, it's very handy though.
Oh yes completely! He always finds new and cool places
I wouldn't call 742 dollars plus tax plus fees for one night affordable.
Im suprised you didnt check for 60's bed bugs Tim. Lol
The Good old days when flying was the highlight of the trip and now it’s like flying in a crowded bus
You can definitely book a first class flight and get a royal treatment today too, private showers, suites and all that jazz. Perks of the glory days didn’t come at basic economy fares.
@@Neurosis_Cordis EXACTLY, The luxury of flying back then was only accessible to the elites, if youre an elite you can still get that luxury today just have to pay for it.
I am a former TWA employee who worked in the terminal the departure lounge was actually called the fish 🐟 bowl 🥣
welcome to flat earth
Fish fish bowl bowl with a spoon? Why didn't they just call it Fish Bowl?
My elderly neighbor, may she RIP, worked for TWA. I could listen to her stories about her world travels for hours. She was fascinating. I miss you, Milka 😢
The actual terminal was opened in 1962 , landmarked in 1994 and the hotel opened in 2019..The building was designed by Eero Saarinen, Finnish Architect, son of the Architect Eliel Saarinen ......the red carpet was a theme in the original terminal also..note that the terminal has a bird wing shape...the carpet was to be the flow through the body....for many years the building sat empty after 2001....I had visited the active terminal when I was younger ..it was fabulous then....still fabulous
now...
As someone trained in Architecture, its great to see reuses like this....
I love your channel Tim...always great visits to some great unique hotels...hi to your family.....
I used to be a Gold TWA flyer living in NYC, and used that terminal "for real" 100s of times. It's sort of bittersweet to see this. I suppose, on balance, better to be preserved in some manner than to be replaced with an inferior modern piece of ""architecture."" But I still wish TWA had continued in existence (a great airline) and operation. I enjoyed your recent London Ritz video too. Thanks for all.
I always feel that Pan Am have the monopoly on the "Golden Age of Aviation" in people's minds. It is nice to see TWA balancing that out a bit.
@@andrewcoogans471 I also flew a lot on Eastern, just prior to their demise. Many visits from the Captain to schmooze with us in the back. Fantastic memories. I still enjoyed flying back then about 200x as much as now.
@@zzmike My very first flight was on Eastern Airlines back in 1969. It was a senior high school trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. I flew from LaGuardia to Richmond, VA and on the way home from Washington, DC to LaGuardia. It was just the beginning for me of many years of flying. Everyone used to “dress up” to fly back then.
This is like something out of the Jetsons as to what we thought our future would look like. Love it. Mid century modern contemporary style
I loved the Jetsons
We had a neighbour who worked for TWA, as a stewardess, in the 70's and we were in awe of her. She was so glamorous, in the age where flying anywhere was a luxury.
This is the best adaptive reuse of a building EVER!! I was in that terminal not long before TWA went away...it was so rundown. But they've kept so much of the layout. BTW, that is a BMW Isetta microcar.
Thank you for the BMW Isseta micro car info. I was in grade school in the 1960’s and a school mates’s mother would pick them up in a similar car. I was always curious as to what kind of cute, quirky car it was.. until now. :)
Wow what a brilliant piece of retro! I loved the architecture. People are saying the hotel is outdated? Well, of course! That's the whole point!😊 My living room looks like that. I rescued all my parents mid-century furniture and household stuff when they were "updating" in the 90s, and and now it's all the height of chick! Really enjoyed this. I'd stay there! Cheers Tim!
Lol they might have meant it's starting to not look as good
@@WalkWithMeTim No bath? One
would think the Presidential Suite
would have one...
My type of person! I always think of how much cool stuff went to the dump
The height of chicken.
I was 16 in 1973 and walked thru this terminal during my connection to Rome on a student tour. I didn't realize how iconic this terminal was. I later became a travel agent but never got back to see this again.
I am so old, I actually used that terminal as a real terminal back in the day (late 80's- and the 90s). It was even amazingly cool then. A masterpiece by Eero Saarinen.
You’re not old… just well seasoned 😊💐🥰 May you have many more years ahead 🙏🏻❤️
Is my question allowed ? I hope not regarded as a stupid question . What does TWA stand for ?
@@Merle-kz4kq Transworld Airways, I believe.
@@Merle-kz4kq Trans World Airlines. Kinda has a different connotation today. I flew them from NYC to L.A. a lot back in the day.
My grandfather worked on that building, it is absolutely beautiful. Also I remember being in there seeing my grandparents off to Italy and playing under the stairs trying to slide down that small incline. Boy I miss those days....
I stumbled upon this account a few days ago and I've been hooked ever since! I love the way you film and vlog your adventures. You have a great eye and film style and it's very engaging. You've got a great sense of humour too!
Nice that they had a cocktail named after the designer. Thr building is absolutely iconic and one of his best works in my opinion. Im very glad it has been saved and put to use. The departure lounge is just something else.
Woah. Can’t believe I wasn’t aware this existed. Such a cool place and great use of the old terminal!
Right?!
Halfway through this, I said to my wife, this is one of the best hotels you've visited, shame the room wasn't as good as the hotel, great video Tim.
Have to agree
My son, now 16, and I stayed there together overnight a year and a half ago. We are both airplane and airline enthusiasts... we had a wonderful time!! I am in my mid 50s, and I flew a lot as a child given that we lived on the east coast and both sets of grandparents (well, by then just my grandfather on the one side as my grandmother passed relatively young) lived on the west coast. The 1st 3 flights I remember being on were TWA 707s transcontinental into SFO. So I have always had a spot in my heart for TWA...
Oh, and the runway view rooms here are amazing!!
Sir, theTWA building was designed by a famous architect. Thats the reason why the building was saved! I have also stayed there. Its amazing!!
We love watching Tims videos, he's never really critical, just positive and honest. Love getting ideas from you . Thank you.
Looks amazing, I love the 60's aesthetics. Very unique hotel and that bar area, pool and plane are awesome!
I do wish we had fabulous and quirky hotels like this in the UK. Great video xx
Me too.. there are a few
They do have tims been to a few
This was one of the most beautiful and immersive hotels you have stayed at. I was floored by how you were transported into time. I would love to go to this place.
Wow, I had no idea the terminal had been converted to a hotel. If I recall my architecture history correctly, this terminal was designed by the Helsinki train station architect. So, you retained a common theme across your latest videos!
Yes, just checked, and the architect of both structures was Eero Saarinen (spelling?). Oh what a need I am...
@@soggymoggytravels Actually, you are not exactly correct. The train station was designed by Eliel Saarinen, who was Eero's father. But well spotted anyway.
I know anyone would think I planned it lol .. I didnt
Wonder if Ryan Air will do the same in years to come 😩 …with your ‘old mate’ as manager….😳🙄 …..incidentally who was holding your mic when you were in the pool😜 …l.🤔 ..✈️✈️
BTW Eero also designed the "tulip" chairs and tables you see throughout the hotel.
Great tour, Tim! I stayed at the TWA in Oct. 2022 for the photo ops and it didn't disappoint! I did not book the Presidential Suite, chose a room on opposite side for a view of the hotel itself as opposed to the runways. I was there for the architecture! Combined it with a tour of Brooklyn Bridge (again, photo ops). Cabbed into Brooklyn, there's a cab stand outside the hotel. Reasoning that I'd be stuck in awful traffic to return I hopped a helicopter (Blade) back to JFK (10 min. from midtown Manhattan!) and they even provide a luxe suv straight to the hotel. I'm a child of the 60's so this retro hotel was a dream come true! I did miss having water and coffee provided in my room. But overall a cool experience! BTW, the Lincoln convertible parked outside the TWA Hotel is a restored '63 Continental painted "Kennedy Blue" - a blue created specifically for JFK's presidential limo.
@@debrapaulsonphotography-da4857 I was sitting here wondering about the Lincoln I knew the color but couldn’t place it thank you for sharing that.
I love your dry humor and downplayed criticisms.
Also it is truly amazing that you are going around to
all of these incredible places and we are able to watch
snuggly from the leisure of our homes. Thank You.❤
What a Groovy place.
So wonderful that this Saarinen masterpiece was preserved, and after years of inactivity and the demise of TWA, it has such a perfectly appropriate new life. I love that display of the uniforms, and the 60s living room!
Wow what a unique hotel! Thanks for sharing this Tim! You are looking good!
I was a flight attendant with TWA been there many times as an airport terminal JFK to Europe 😊
Thank you for sharing your trip there in New York. The old terminal from the 1960s was beautiful!😊
My uncle was a flight mechanic for TWA for over 40 years. He was fiercely loyal to that company, as they took very good care of their employees. Great look back in time, Tim! Thank you! 😊
We stayed there last year and it was so nostalgic for me as my father flew for TWA so we always flew out of that terminal. The staff was really nice and very willing to listen to stories of the olden days. We had a runway room and I wished my dad had been able to see it . He would have stayed up all night just watching the plans take off and land.
I have been binge watching your channel and it really makes me laugh when you consistently wonder how many people can get in the shower! But love this hotel and I am looking into booking it!
It’s an amazingly beautiful hotel and it’s super nostalgic! I definitely want to visit it one day! However, I do think for the price there were a few things overlooked. The fridge being out of order and the 18 dollar cocktails in plastic cups is kind of a bummer.
I’ve stayed here. We has a layover in JFK with a toddler and this made it so much more manageable. Doesn’t cost much more than lounge access and honestly it’s a better experience.
I follow different flight attendants on RUclips and I’ve only seen 2 people that I know of who have been there but the tour was nothing like this. I appreciate it.
I've seen this on TV, how cool ! You have got to say their branding was totally on point for sure ! TWA was EVERYWHERE !!! Hope you can bring the family back to see it. It is somewhere I would love to stay ! Very cool.
Love this video! I live very close to JFK and know all about this hotel, but have never been to see it for myself. But now I definitely hope to. I remember back in the 60’s when it first opened - TWA was THE airline to fly. The building was a destination in itself. And I remember when it became run down and was closed. Fortunately, someone had the vision of saving it and turning it into a hotel . And here we are! ❤
ahhh. twa. my carrier from 70s to the end. those long halls with the red carpet. i've stayed at the hotel several times and it brings back great memories. thanks for this. Bryan
Really cool idea for a hotel. Nice video, Tim. Love the channel.
Just so you know Tim, we've recently had a baby and she's a bit colic, so I spend 5 or so hours from 12 til 5am with her, and your videos are what we binge watch. Your voice is becoming a comfort to her, so thank you Uncle Tim! Haha.
Tim ,all I can say is you are brilliant at what you do !! You are interesting and honest and you still have such enthusiasm . Love it 🤗
Thanks 👍
Thank you very much from France, because my grandmother was a Flight Attendant for TWA in the 70',80', and maybe 90's, Great Work!!
Stayed there twice and LOVED it! An Av Geeks Dream 🤩
Oh my !!! I remember connecting and walking through there in late 70’s ❤️❤️❤️ thank you for sharing all those details pointed out 😎 so glad I’ve subs to your channel
Absolutely top notch video as always, so please don't think my negative comment is towards you Tim! But that hotel (as a hotel guest) just looks like a complete rip off. I'd love to visit and just do the free stuff without booking a room. Not even a bottle of water in a room at that price eh!? I think I'd rather stay at the JFK Inn and that's saying something :D
Paul Lucas went here a couple of years ago and I thought it was all style over substance then!
Agree the price was disgusting and broken mini bar and no water in room.. maybe I paid for the view
I remember flying TWA, Eastern Airlines and Pan Am. The airlines then like you said, more room, good food, drinks. Not like today. Thank you for bringing me back my childhood flying on an airplane ❤I remember flying the last Pan Am and eastern flight to the Bahamas. So sad most of the airlines are now gone
The whole place looks like a Stanley Kubrick set. Amazing.
OMG how retro was that you can’t beat the 60’s loved it. So nice to go back in time the hairdressers WHOW!
That is really cool and I am sooo glad they did not tear it down.. It is classic architecture and needs to be preserved. WE have a Trainstation in Cincinnati, UNION TERMINAL, that wsa on the chopping block but it is one of the classic examples of Art Deco architecture in the world and has one of the the largest 1/2 Domes. They originally turned that into a "mall" but later it was turned into our History Museums and the National History Museums and an IMAX theater. It still has trains but the main concourse was destroyed, unfortunately (and these incredible murals were transfered to our airport. ) WE need to preserve classic architecture..
This IS crazy! (: I grew up during the days of TWA, Pan Am, Eastern, and all those defunct airlines. I’m also glad this hotel is preserving a piece of history, and more than behind a glass display case in an airport nook. Hope they gave you a complimentary night’s stay in return for the 330K views!
Enjoyed the video Tim . You certainly get about and stay in some lovely places even if they are that close to the terminal. We're you disturbed at all with flights taking off /landing. Keep doing what your doing Tim love to all the family.
no not at all it was well sound proofed
That looks like a fascinating place to go but a little pricey for the room.
Thanks for the intertainment.
Iconic furnitures everywhere by Eero Saarinen!
The whole hotel is so unique and quirky, definitely something else to add to the bucket list!
Absolutely fantastic video Tim! As a pilot and aviation enthusiast, I’ve always wanted to visit here ever since it opened. I did JumboStay in 2017, but after watching your video, this is next on my list! Keep up the great work Tim.
You should!
I'm not an aviation guy, not old enough to have been around for TWA, but I still love this hotel.
I would absolutely consider staying there if I ever go to New York.
Brilliant place, what a good idea to make it into a hotel. I would have liked the cost to have been converted to sterling. Not that I could afford it or will be going at my age but I love watching all the places you go. Keep up the fantastic vlogging.
Especially in the evening...amazing!
This TWA hotel looks great , love the retro feel .
This hotel was so pleasing on the eye
Another look at an amazing, and unique hotel. Thank you Tim. ✈️
The TWA Hotel is amazing; I only popped inside when I was catching a flight just to have a look around (you've got to look like you're meant to be at the hotel otherwise they move you on) but its got such incredible style and the building is incredible. As a hotel, it's definitely expensive though. P.S. Catch Me If You Can was literally filmed here!
4:25 Is it just me or does Tim fit in perfectly? I'd definitely be fooled into believing he was the actual manager of the salon 😆
I got such a kick out of you walking around where I have been many times!😀 My first flight out of that terminal was in '75 and the last time was 2001. Looks like time just stood still.
I'm glad they didn't tear it down, just surprised JFK actually had the space to keep it there. That hotel price for One night......😵 Thanks Tim, this was fun! 👍
What a stunning example of architecture. Absolutely fantastic shapes of that building. wow wow wow!!
Hi Tim look so cool can't wait I am going to Leonardo cypria Bay in Cyprus in paphos have you been there or do you know if sumone has 😊
Reviews online tell a lot.
I went through this terminal back in the 80s on my way to London. I remember thinking how cool and futuristic the terminal was. I’m so glad it wasn’t demolished! I’d love to stay there!!
Tim’s a really good traveler and superb RUclipsr ! Keep up the great work! LOL! :)
thanks
@@WalkWithMeTim no problem :)
I love that Tim says "Hoover".. I live in America..we say "Vacuum".. wonderful video..❤
$18 for a small cocktail in a plastic cup? I love the style of the hotel but I think it’s missing a few touches before it can be a luxury hotel. Great video as always Tim.
it's airport prices.. in NYC
You can go to the main airport bar and save two bucks if you’re short on cash.
Yup! I’ve been to a few states in the US and my home, New York, definitely has the best tap water. You can drink right out of the tap….👍🏽
I thought the room wasn’t that special for a four star hotel and the condition of that fridge was shocking - was it supposed to be useable or just a feature? and no water, tea, or coffee was a big miss. Very interesting to see though ❤
Except for the view, yes, nothing special.
My family and I stayed in the TWA hotel in late 2019, in a regular room, and they had not only tea and coffee, but a small "bar" with alcohol (I remember there being Woodford Reserve bourbon), TWA branded swizzle sticks, coasters, napkins, and a basket of snacks and balsa wood airplanes -- all for an extra charge of course. Still, it was nice and very retro cool stuff. I guess it got to be too much of a mess to deal with. Either that, or the cleaning crew didn't fully restock things in the suite we saw in the video.
@@xkot6431 I rememnered looking at the website and you're right. There was a bar.
I absolutely love this. I've never flown TWA, but I do remember playing Twister and coming along with my mom and nana when they would go to the salon and it looked pretty much like that. I would love to stay at this hotel. Very well done.

Incredible! Just my style! It shows what can be done with an old terminal. Not a presidential quality suite you would expect by today's standards but, that was probably presidential standards in the '60s. A plastic glass for the cocktail was a bit naff. Cost? Well, you are, of course, paying for the uniqueness. But, what an experience!
Agree barry I did have to tell myself that .. but fir the Money I'm paying for the view I guess
I'm geeking out sooo hard over this 😮😮. I'm a huge aviation enthusiast and I solely want to go here just for the hotel and that pool. I'd spend hours in that pool watching the planes. I even became a security screener in the international airport in Perth just to watch the planes and be around aviation equipment. I love this video, it was done very well with great info.
Tim we watch all of your uploads and we commend your high work ethic
However
We desperately want to see you in more absolutely dreadful sh*thole hotels.
:)
Those really are my favorites. Especially the big old seaside UK ones.
They are coming ...
My husband and I both worked for TWA when we married in 1968. We talked about going to stay there for our 50th but unfortunately he passed before we we got there😢
I remember going to this TWA terminal back in August 1977' to see my uncle Paul and his family off (they were moving to Phoenix AZ). I remember my cousin Sonia had ordered bagel (I had never heard of one before that). I was 12 years old and still remember the round penny sized white tile, that red carpeting in the long corridor, the clock and the arrivals and departure board. I am sure we were they at least an hour or two since I can remember so much of the detail.
Tim, I love this channel with all the sights I'll never get to see. I never thought to check the mattress out in a hotel. I guess I always thought everything was cleaned thoroughly. Ha!
I love how you point out how many people could get in a shower. Question: Why would you want to take a shower with 6 people?😊
I went through this terminal on my first trip to Europe in 1991. Such stunning architecture!
not a plane geek usually but the retro style and execution here absolutely rocks
Love the whole look of this hotel, thank you for showing us this 🙌
Trans World Airlines (TWA) An American International dyfunct airline. That still has a big name/logo recognition. I love the mid-century decor and architecture they were able to preserve. When America was at it's height. Circa 50's - 60's.
Glad you reviewed this place ! Like your channel.
Edit : I've seen several videos on this place and actually, your's is the best !
best report on the T.W.A. Hotel.
DO repeat the best.
Good to see that "our" spirit is still alive in that Flight Center. I used to be a part of the T.W.A. family. All those flights from Bombay, from Berlin, from Cairo, from Paris and OF COURSE out of London of the highest quality.
Moving Vid, though. BUT , good to see, that a bit of our T.W.A. attitude is still living!
Tim should get a pilots suit complete with cap and aviator shades and stroll around the hotel. See the fun begin! (I have those exact wood ducks on the wall).
That was the foreign travel terminal at jfk I went there as a kid to see some relatives off…that was when you could go anywhere in an airport without a ticket..like 1967
I got to fly out of that terminal a few times as a kid in the late 70's. I adored it then and am glad it is open again for people to marvel at.
@7:34 I love the reference to "Howard Hughes' Office", which actually exists there and you can visit
I just came across your channel. This video was what came up in my feed. I love mid century modern and the TWA terminal is the epitome of it. I’ve been waiting for someone to do a great review. Yours comes across as completely honest and impartial. I’ve got to book a trip there for my husband and I now!

I did a day stay for about four hours due to a delay in my flight. It was awesome and nostalgic, restaurants are super expensive.
Very fun! When I saw that nice clean carpet, I knew you were going to be impressed! :)
I'm up late binge-watching your videos and it cracks me up your assessment of showers and how many people can fit in them, LOL.
Studied this building in college in 2016, beautiful what theyve done to keep it in some working order .
I stayed there many times during the pandemic. It was very quiet and the pool was empty. Loved it! Beware though…. The tinted windows give great views to those inside and out! 😀
Very grateful to the manager for letting us into the Connie which was locked up at the time.
Looks fabulous, Tim. Obviously one for the bucket list when visiting New York, my most favourite city in the world.
