      Fun fact in an old manuscript it says that unscrewing the pommels and throwing the blade at the opponent to kill them is called to finish him rightly

      Richard, you are a HEMA instructor, correct? I am looking to get into sparring with sabers. Do you have any pointers you can give to me here?

    • @TravelingTyrant
      @TravelingTyrant 8 лет назад +11

      Sure! Go to HEMA Alliance website and find local club. We have a mapfinder for North America and Europe.
      Contact the nearest club and see what they have for you.
      Or, buy my Polish Saber book. Easy to find on Amazon.com and can get you started on that system.

    I had a teacher who was a historical fencer, he used a style passed through generations in his family; he was a direct descendant of don Juan Quijada de Reayo, one of the most prominent fencers in the old Spanish fencing style. Sadly he died without passing the style because nobody was willing to be his student :/

      @Evantailsacre Месяц назад

      Well, these things tend to pass from one family member to the next as there are both esoteric and exoteric knowledge to martial arts and especially fencing so not everything can nor should be passed through to strangers. It is the exact same for my family. However, it is very sad that so much knowledge died and didn't have the opportunity to be passed.

      In a bout such as this the point is "not" to get hit so a lot of caution is taken to be deliberate with ones tactics and deliveries. Its not as exciting as the movies but real life seldom is.

      A large sword would lop off a limb or just kill you fast... while thin swords made for puncturing... They will enter and just destroy all your organs, and all you can do is sit there and bleed out slowly. it's not fast like losing an arm or a head, it's very, very, very slow and i could imagine very painful.

    I always find thrust-centric vs thrust-centric weapon sparring to be dull. It's got the cool chess-like quality of vying for the centreline and such, but it just never has as much in the way of cool looking exchanges as cut and thrust.

      Guacamole Nigga Penis I never said it wasn’t, Guacamole Nigga Penis. But the fact that there’s also entire manuals written on how to cut with a rapier shouldn’t be overlooked. OP said that cut and thrust looks cooler, and I simply pointed out that rapier is a cut and thrust weapon.

    I know this is off topic, but a question has occurred multiple times on whether or not fencing can train you to defend yourself in real life that I've decided to answer for anyone curious. The short answer is yes. Even though you will likely not have a sword on you in the street, it does improve multiple functions in the brain relating to combat. It teaches your brain patience, timing, and improves your physical agility along with improved fitness. All things that improve self defense as compared to someone who doesn't train at all and just watches TV. So it is a fun art to practice, that can also help train your brain for real self defense scenarios. Not to mention, you can buy a real sword in many countries that you can keep as home defense. If it it's self defense specifically you're looking for, I'd look elsewhere though. But fencing is a very fun and safe combat sport.

      Fencers (HEMA, at least) also train in grappling. And any type of grappling is applicable to self defense.

    I noticed that red socks was quite impatient for the field and was almost always the one making the attack, and usually getting hit as a result. combined with white shin guards generally not pressing the attack and just moving backwards for an opening to strike. Would be curious to see how white initiates an attack, if ever. in any case, fun duel guys!

      Search up the HEMA club finder from the Hema Alliance. If you're in Europe or East Coast USA they are everywhere. West coast USA has some whilest most other regions/ countries dont have many but there are some

    Shows how hard is to fight a Rapier. Even using one yourself it's still hard. The opponent can win by being passive & finding a mistake in your attack execution easily.

    • @Nesymafdet
      @Nesymafdet 2 года назад

      It’s more like having two skilled opponents who know how to fight, so they don’t risk giving an opening until they see one themselves. They don’t want to be punished for attacking too early.

    I feel like rapier duels are all about who had more control over their opponent, and how to counter the moves that would give control. While on the sword side of the spectrum the whole duel is over strategy and position. Correct me if I'm wrong I'm fairly new to this stuff

    Seems like parrying is comparatively ineffective with rapiers (since they are so light, the opponent instantly brings the weapon back) - it's more about evading attacks.
