yea that totally went over my head as I was 1 when Chernobyl happened. One of my biggest travel regrets ever is not visiting Chernobyl in 2018 when I was at the contest in Kyiv - I was doing my Masters at the time, so I was bogged down with work 😭
Greetings from Ukraine! First of all, thank you for your quality and thoughtful comments!🤗 And let me tell you a little more about the song, video clip and stage show. Because you reason and evaluate competently and richly. 😊 This is a traditional song for invoking spring. The Shum (noise) in this song is a mythological personage, the spirit of the forest. When people sing this song (it calls vesnyanka from the name of vesna - spring) , make noise and dance, they call on this spirit, and he rather brings spring. This is the meaning of this song. The singer's green clothes mean the green fur coat of the spirit of the forest Shum. Around her, the musicians form a kind of magic circle. This is the symbol of the Sun. And the Sun rises on the stagescreen too. And then it explodes, crumbling into thousands of pieces. And the explosion of the Sun in the stagevideo reminds us of Chornodyl tragedy. The official video clip for this song was shot in Chornobyl (now its empty town),where the reactor exploded. This is symbolic, because wildlife is now being revived and renewed there. And the song itself also has roots in this region of Ukraine. People dancing near the singer symbolize the power of nature, which wakes up after winter. The solar rituals of invoking spring and the sun are not only in the Ukrainian tradition, but also in the traditions of many nations of Europe and the World. And this is what fights us closer to each other.
While I was in love with the previous version I still think this is a great, more effective version. Easily my favourite track this year and it's just a great song through and through. Like you say the singer is very striking, she has a very intense gaze and comes across with the serious energy of some sort of priestess or holy woman, at the same time the song couldn't be more fun. The Ukrainian delegation has got absolutely fantastic raw material to work with. It appeals to both east and west, young and old, while doing its own thing and not pandering to anyone. Given the Ukraines history in Eurovision I just don't see them messing this up. It's just great and I could easily see this in the top 10.....maybe maybe even top 5. 12 points to the Ukraine!!!
YES, priestess is a great word! She's very supernatural intense, like a LotR elf or a shamanic druid! I love how ambitious you are for this and id love it to come top 10, but my emotional priority right now is this simply qualifying!
Go_A stay loyal to their characteristic signature style. High level folktronica with traditional Ukrainian vocalisms and melodic underlayers. Unique, memorable, perfectly balanced, original and confident, the piece emits a sort of magnetism. The drop is just amazing, the production impeccable - What else to ask for? Ukraine delivers quality and a music lesson, with an entry full of character. The juries must love it, the televoters should love it. First place? Hmmmm. No. Too extreme - it doesn't comply with the unwritten laws of Eurovision standards, that "demand" every single winner to have uniqueness, BUT always brought down to Eurovision's earth. However, Shum does deserve a place among the 7 best entries this year.
It is a mix of the rave and electro-ethno-folk. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, therefore GoA had filmed video in Chornobyl. The lyrics of this song is a variation of Ukrainian folk songs which were sung in the folk ritual of the beginning of spring, which is also an allusion to the "re-birth" of Chornobyl, beginning of new life. It works on several levels.
BTW apparently the song is about "summoning" spring or I guess like asking it to come sooner and to bring about all the change that comes with it. Which is also interesting since you can see people throwing their suits and masks into the fire at a point in the video maybe making a nod at hoping something else will end. Also yeah, the beginning is very Mad Max.
I love how meaningful and deep the video is, in addition to featuring a great song. Pandemic and Chernobyl are references of huge problems to overcome and there is hope for better tomorrow, when we will celebrate life and renewal. There is one more reason for showing the Dome in the video (2:54 ): the original folk song "Shum" ( which was the inspiration - an ancient ritual dance performed to awaken spring) was recorded in Chernobyl region. Initially, Go_A's first video was not for Eurovision but a part of a music project, which they started to remind about a big piece of folk culture from Chernobyl region lost because people from the contaminated region were evacuated and resettled elsewhere. Everything in the video has meanings. And the falcon- symbol of the Holy Spirit and Ukraine 's saint patron: descending falcon in stylized graphic version is in Ukraine's coat of arms, intertwined with letters ВолЯ ( which means "freedom" and "will"). And the name of the band "Go to A (origins)" is great and fits perfectly their vision and mission: to bring together roots - folklore and modernity. And here they used 2 Ukrainian folk instruments : sopilka (flute like) and drymba (metal mouth instrument).
Great reaction, Tom! Although I slightly preferred the melody of the first version (I know they had to change it), this is still one of my favorites this year. It just instantly grabs your attention and transports you to somewhere so unexpected. It’s bold. Unique. I hope it won’t be too polarizing in May.
Both versions too me are perfect, I love the suspense of the longer version and they have made the shorter version top 10 accessible. Been in my top 3 since releaae, great gym track for me too.
some discovered details about Go_A's staging... (1) the lead singer Kateryna Pavlenko said that there will be six people on stage (i.e. the band itself + 2 additional performers)... (2) the DJ Taras Shevchenko said that the concept of staging is even more mystical than those in the two SHUM/ШУМ music videos... (3) the director/producer of staging Kostyantyn Tomilchenko has earlier worked at ESC with Jamala and Melovin... as for me, all the above facts seem to be quite promising... + (4) finally, according to different musical forums, the flute guy (actually, a hugely talented multi-instrumentalist) Ihor Didenchuk is the nicest male ESC performer this year... of course, a disaster is always possible, but let's hope that the results will be OK for Go_A...
well interestingly, I just saw some of the staging concept images from Romania - I had no idea that the stage this year had that kind of imaging technology! That would definitely help Ukraine create a very mystical and beautiful staging concept!

You might have noticed the Chornobyl sarcophagus in the background. This year we marked 35th anniversary since the disaster. In my view, this music piece was inspired and dedicated to the people who lived there. After the disaster, they were evacuated and spread out all over the country. Therefore, the language variant that they spoke, their traditions, their vocal manner, cultural artifacts are mainly lost. In a way, Go_A pays tribute to the lost culture...
This would be a good one for the treadmill Tom 😂 Still enjoy this one, the upgrade gets to the point a lot quicker and I'm here for that. I know the staging will be incredible if last years song was anything to go by. I loved their staging. This years stage will likely be accompanied by a really artsy and dark stage that bursts in to spectacular pyrotechnic display as the song hits the climax and then hits its stride in to the final fast pace of the song. One of my favourites of the year

She reminds me more of Enya than Trinity but I'm on my own on this one. And yes she IS highly interesting, they have confinement videos in her bedroom, it's translated in the CC and it is super interesting. She's a lovely girl. The boys don't speak much but they all appear to be happy people with a good sense of humour. Plus the cat. I like it less than the traditional original but not less enough to have it shaken out of my joint first /top 3 classification. I can't vote for any of my other outsider favourites who are all in semi 2 or big 5 (Malta won't need my help) so I will vote and vote for them. As you know 😁 They are a live band, as we also know and I just can't wait to see the staging! They're going to absolutely slay, after maybe several off-key or timid performances. Nobody will forget either them or Russia that's for sure.
omg yea im low key stressed about it - its really very borderline and it feels similar situation to portugal in 2019 (which i remember you hated). Btw Ive had this on repeat all day - I like this WAY more than Solovey.
@@ESCTom sorry but that Portugal song was like watching paint dry. This is nothing like it. People just say it won't qualify because they want others to qualify. Wanting and getting is two different things. I am however, pretty sure the juries will do them no favour. They don't like traditional anything.
@@ESCTom hahaha. I hope we still have enough Latvians and Lithuanians here to vote the Roop, Manizha and GoA from Ireland! I think it's too out there for the Poles 😁
I really really really hope that this makes it to the final, but unfortunately I have a nagging feeling it won’t. I can’t help comparing it to Portugal 2019, that was my personal overall second place that year and while I was horrified when it didn’t qualify from the semi, I was also not in the least surprised. If only the two semi finals were balanced and equally strong. Unfortunately semi 1 will be a blood bath and we’ll definitely be loosing a few gems. Love the revamp but I also liked the simplicity of the first version. Still, their delegation must have realized that they needed to push further......and they did. Hopefully for them it will prove to be enough.
Yes I did think of Portugal too myself. I feel the difference will be in the decision making process. This music video shows they have good artistic direction and idea. Portugal had an amazing national final performance and then did a worse, more awkward version of it for the final. It was a bad performance and their costumes were fucking hideous. Eeep also just looked up and Portugal had 15th in the running order. Ok yea Ukraine reply need to bring out their A game staging
At 2.55min you totally missed the symbolism which hit me like a rock - the Chernobyl Reactor encased in its sarcophegous that is meant to last for 150 years.
Heres my top 10 from 2019 - ruclips.net/video/wQX0eFlNypI/видео.html I didnt actually film my top 10 from 2020 so its still a little bit top secret 🙊. was planning to do the top 10 vid once this season is over. Switzerland was obviously my number 1 though that year
@@ESCTom haha yesss I guessed as much! Be cool if you could do top 10 videos for previous Eurovision’s between seasons. A top 10 a month would be awesome. I think I have a clear picture of my top 10s from 2007 onwards, I kinda think of that as the modern era for some reason ( possibly due to the awful 2006 stage ).
haha yea but then it begs the big question - how to decide on what is a top 10? Do I use my top 10 that I made at the actual time of the competition or do I update it to what I like now in 2021?
Hi Tom. As others have said, I really worry for the qualification prospects of Ukraine this year. Within the fandom we are now accustomed to white voice, although that still really polarises opinions even within the community. This will all come down to what the average viewers and families, sat on their couches at home, will make of it hearing this for the very first time. Remember, Tulia was a big fan favourite and that didn't make for it through for Poland either...
omg so true, i had totally forgotten that this was even white voice 😂😂 I think this is a little bit more popular in the community though - Tulia got 0 points in the OGAE and they were 13th favourite out of 17 in the community app in their semi
@@ESCTom Yeah, I think the fandom are really overlooking the fact that we are now accustomed to this sound. I can imagine lots of families watching and thinking WTF, is this...?? The Chipmunks and a guy with a recorder..???
That TRUCK though. Awful lot of Azerbaijan love in the latest music first video, more than random - on top of what you'd expect, Lithuania, Bulgaria Russia - if Azerbaijan has taken to it then they're a shoo in for the final. Which semi is France voting on? France would vote for this too, believe it or not. Like literally one in three comments on that video specifically comes from Azerbaijan 🤷♂️. I've never seen anything like it
I don't think this is qualifying tom it is at least in the most danger of not qualifying of all their previous entries so I reckon both Australia and Ukraine will lose their 100% record and then nobody has 100%
I agree about Australia, but i still think is going to qualify. I think you might be right that itll be their toughest qualification yet, I could see this in the 9th or 10th spots for the first time ever. But unless they have uncharacteristically bad staging, it's odds will only increase after the rehearsals come out
@@ESCTom you like it and I kinda enjoy it but we are Eurovision fans yes its different but I just have a feeling with all the mainstream songs that this will suffer badly in the televote I'm not saying 100% non qualifier but I'm unsure that it will qualify unlike other years
I hope youre right Anghara, Iceland felt more rebellious and anarchaic to me, but yea it definitely had that unique industrial feel that this has. The surprising thing about Iceland was how well they actually did with the jury as well. It wasnt a Michal Spak thing where the televote/jury were totally lopsided.
Это старая фольклорная песня, еще дохристианская веснянка, исполненная именно в народном вокальном стиле, но на современный лад, поэтому непривычно вам такое пение слышать, ибо сейчас так не поют .
If there's any justice, Ukraine has to be top 3. I just love it.
lets not be greedy yet, we just need this to be safety through to the final as our first priority! 😂😅

Great vid as ever. Is there a way we can see your previous years rankings? To know what you vibe with most.
Heres my top 10 from 2019 - ruclips.net/video/wQX0eFlNypI/видео.html
I didnt actually film my top 10 from 2020 so its still a little bit top secret 🙊. was planning to do the top 10 vid once this season is over.

Слава Україні...
❤️👍🏻💥💥🇺🇦
In the background is Chernobyl.. If you watch all video
It is a pity that there is no translator. I don't understand English well.
Basically, I like it a lot
Hi Tom. As others have said, I really worry for the qualification prospects of Ukraine this year. Within the fandom we are now accustomed to white voice, although that still really polarises opinions even within the community. This will all come down to what the average viewers and families, sat on their couches at home, will make of it hearing this for the very first time. Remember, Tulia was a big fan favourite and that didn't make for it through for Poland either...
omg so true, i had totally forgotten that this was even white voice 😂😂
I think this is a little bit more popular in the community though - Tulia got 0 points in the OGAE and they were 13th favourite out of 17 in the community app in their semi
But unless they have uncharacteristically bad staging, it's odds will only increase after the rehearsals come out
@@ESCTom you like it and I kinda enjoy it but we are Eurovision fans yes its different but I just have a feeling with all the mainstream songs that this will suffer badly in the televote I'm not saying 100% non qualifier but I'm unsure that it will qualify unlike other years
@@alexhodder4129 remember Hatari two years ago? It wasn't mainstream either and it went bananas with the televote.
@@anghara2001 hatari was special I don't feel like it has the same effect all the hatari points would probably go to Lithuania
Чернобель
However much this serves the competition in terms of ethnic/original/language/shock, I cannot see the merit, or feel engaged.
