The colonial mentality of the author of the article about Qingdao reminds me about the protesters in Hong Kong who prefer to be the second class citizens of Britain instead of the first class Chinese citizen with preferential treatment by Chinese government. I feel pity for those people who disrespect for their own ethnicity, their society and country. It's so sad!
As an older American who has traveled all over Europe and East Asia, I think my country is HIGHLY overrated. In most ways Europe is straight up, just a better version of America. While East Asia is like living in the future. Europe and East Asia also have much lower crime than America and no threat of some crazy guy doing a mass shooting every few days. But there is one thing that is great about America: If you are a Billionaire and want the power to do whatever you want including legally owning politicians and being able to buy the law, there is no place on Earth better than America. America is a really nice place for mega rich people to make even more money and f*ck around with society without consequence.
The one about Germany isn't true at all. About 10 years ago, I had my backpack snatched away by some people whom I assumed them to be middle eastern refugees controlled by syndicate. It happened while I was waiting for an overnight train Cologne station. I reported to the police at the station. Not only was he indifferent to my plight, he was also ignorant as well. My ID say I was of Chinese ethnicity but country is Singapore. Just because he saw the race "Chinese", he insisted I was not telling him the truth and insisted I'm from China. He was also quite racist and didn't seem to understand English. I was under the impression Europeans are conversant in English, esp Germany, obviously not. Actually, contrary to what that idiot said in his article, if you lose something in Europe, it will be very difficult to get it back since it has porous borders among members of the EU, and not as many CCTVs as in East Asian countries.
I think it's safe to assume that these stories are all made up, or at least most of them are, but that's part of why it's so funny. Sorry you had that experience, though. Speaking up at an American school is a mundane occurrence, but Chinese students will choose to bite their tongue and accept their teacher's instruction as gospel, even if the students know with absolute certainty that the information is factually incorrect.
At least at the beginning, Confucianism did not require obedience to authority. The Analects records a large number of conversations in which Confucius' students questioned Confucius.
