Mileage is registered on the transmission. Engine is hours. Living in Japan back in the early 2000s, I traveled from Atsugi Naval base to Yokota Air base by car with a total of about 25 kilometers distance on the transmission but the engine was running for 3hours in traffic. So imagine doing this drive daily one way at 125 kilometers a week but car was running for 15hrs which is about a trip from Georgia to New York with about 1000 miles or about 1600 kilometers. Just an FYI.

“Miles” is always just an average, a means of measuring if you will. But what you said is 100% correct we should start putting “hr” meters on cars.
I kind of wish American automakers would have an hours meter on cars along with mileage. The miles only tell a part of the story. Adding in the hours the engine has run gives a better idea of the wear and tear on the engine and car as a whole. Still not the whole story, but better than just miles. Would be great too if automakers would have some kind of "statistics" built into the ECU that would measure various things like the highest RPM the engine has seen, the highest speed the car has gone, the highest temperature it has seen, and so forth.
There are hour meters on new ram trucks.. You could always get a dirt bike hour meter and put it on your car/truck etc. to keep track, they’re cheap too.
I wouldn’t worry much about idle hours in traffic.. it’s the “under load” times that would be of most importance, hence the odometer, instead of hours.
I bought a JDM engine and transmission for my 93 Acura Legend back in 2015 and it still running strong to this day.

Is it an automatic? My brother had a gold '93 LS 6-Speed with the factory spoiler and stock wheels. Too bad he totalled it a while back. Sweet cars! ... Even the automatics... Can't believe I'd say it.
Pollution is a major concern in Japan. That is the reason engines are replaced with relatively low miles there. Plus they do a lot of idling in traffic. A worn engine will pollute more, especially when idling so they replace it with a newer engine.
It's time for electric or hydrogen cars.
@@hs-ug1tr I have been told that the batteries used on electric cars are terrible for the environment, and what happens when a Tesla dies? The battery - as I'm told - has to be thrown out. Where do you put it, in a landfill? I don't know the answers to the dilemma, but it seems to me the powers that be want everyone to believe that pollution is a worse problem than our landfills getting filled with batteries. I'm thinking acid, run-off, water supply. I don't see how replacing one issue with another is beneficial. Electric IMO is not the answer.
Now Hydrogen? I don't know anything about them. If that's an environmentally safe option, then maybe that is the future.

In case of Nitrogen it's a product of water (electrolysis of water gives Nitrogen and Oxygen).
I just put a JDM engine in a 03 Honda Civic. It was sold as a block, head and oil pan. It ran for 5 seconds and the cam gear fell off and bent just one intake valve. I yanked the head, replaced the one valve and the engine runs great now. Word to the wise, check everything and if timing belt driven, replace belt, waterpump and tensioner.
I put a jdm b20b in my civic and snapped the timing belt and bent a bunch of valves. Got a head from the junkyard and took it to the machine shop now it runs great and been going 5 plus years! The engine was so clean on the inside when I got it. Sucks if I would of put a belt on it when I first got it b4 I put it in the car it would of saved me alot of time,money, and trouble!

I support this video. Living in Japan has raised some concerns about the "JDM low milage importing" in the u.s. can there be honest shops that source low milage; yes!. But that's not always the story.

The point you missed/overlooked is how hard that inspection is to pass, its not like you pay and you're good there is actual smog emissions and all that stuff, the older the car is the tighter the regulation becomes. so as a result many engine in the 50000-75000 miles range don't pass smog and are either taken out of the car itself or the car is scrapped altogether and the engines are shipped. is it possible for engines with 120000 miles to pass emissions? yes it is, but very rare, so in general they have low miles. still better off with a swap rather then a rebuild if you're on a budget.

I think what makes these engines seem like a good deal, is my auto shop wants $1600 just to reseal my leaking timing chain cover. Geez, it's just a bead of RTV! Lol.

i imported a 2jz with a with a sticker that said 32000km which is about 19,000 miles. when the engine arrived it was in amazing condition. I looked over every seal and nothing was leaking. Even the oem black engine paint wasn't chipped like higher mile 2jz usually are. the engine was is in such great shape that the heat shield and bolts cover the twin turbos weren't even rusted. Its all luck of the draw i guess

if your importer buys front clips then you pretty much guaranteed mileage, hmotorsonline gets clips atleast for itrs/ctrs. another thing is hmo selects the best honda engines (specific market) vs other importers which sell all makes engines (subaru,nissan,toyota,mitsubishi etc) and they could care less about quality.

I just wanted to vouch HMO for my purchase on an H23A Bluetop last week. Steve is awesome as well as the staff! They had the valve cover removed in order for me to inspect the cams and lobes and overall the head's condition and a compression test all right before purchasing. 235psi and above on all four cylinders and I was sold. Yet, that doesn't mean you should neglect your basic wear-and-tear components prior to installing it back in to your car (Crank oil seals, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and even the valve cover gasket).
I usually look at the coolant lines as well as other inside components. If it looks new, I get it.

something not mentioned often is the price to actually drive. gas is expensive and taking highways is expensive. so generally they use cars for short trips.

it's not a myth, JDM shops don't import engines,. they import the whole front end of the car with the dash... that's how they know exactly how many miles or km are on the engine, do your research properly....
A French Canadian Soldier lol no, not really. many shops just get a sea can and literally just chuck the engines in there. That's why when they arrive TB's and sensors are usually busted.

What's crazy is they make the most reliable cars in Japan that can go for over 300,000 miles trouble free and throw them out at 100000 miles.
JCI is usually what kills owning a car in Japan. The insurance is usually twice the price of a car especially if its an old car because of liability of the road. Hence why a lot of old car are usually sitting in the junk yards with very low miles. When I was stationed there, people would sell their cars for dirt cheap just so they don't have to pay for the insurance to get it back on the road. Hence why military people usually import skylines, supras, ae86 when their time is up in Japan, they can avoid paying the JCI and just get the car shipped over to their next duty station for free then just register is stateside. I've had friends who have brought 91 hatchbacks and r32 skylines for less than 5k because you are allowed to ship one vehicle with you for free when you transfer.

You realize the engine websites says around a set amount of miles so they aren't really lying. They never guarantee it's under 50k, they just say most are.

If there is no letter after the last number , it's from Japan. I.E (B18C=JAPAN)

@@MITONFILMS Thank you sir. Mine shows X2Z R-W20N (R is sub-scripted). It's the largest or most prominent alpha-numeric on the bar-code label. Many other serial numbers and numbers as well but smaller. Confusing. No way to search for what any of it indicates.
To be fair they do say "average mileage". So the implication is some are more some are less. But I agree this estimate can't be true. I think sometime in the past this may have been true. Probably 5-10 years ago. But as time goes on all the mileages go up and the engine sellers just never bothered to update their estimates. Just look at the used car prices over in Japan. The type r especially holds its value well so in most cases it makes sense to sell the car rather than part it out. It's likely only the cars with higher mileages or accident damage get scrapped.

I was always told this was true about 50,000 miles because that Japan has super bad problems with smog and when cars get older and more miles on them that they fail emissions test and put off too much exhaust and they don't wanna polute the air anymore than it is.. that's probably why they cut their cars off at Red lights not to save gas but to cut down on emissions and smog

If people think 100k = bad engine in japan I have a thought as to where that could have started, older cars where that was the case, maybe a popular lemon and it stuck in the zeitgeist. Probably more to do with emissions testing and such but could be related

Shutting off your car at red lights is actually good for the car.. and yes cars in Japan have lower miles.. maybe the owner waited an extra 20k miles before changing it.. maybe the person did it when they're supposed to.. the bottom line is they do have lower miles and Japanese cars now actually shut off at red lights here in USA.. you have no idea what you're talking about bro.
Generally the miles will be less but that is not always the case.the shut off at lights i was wrong about that...
I recently purchased a jdm transmission for my 06 Acura TL was told guaranteed to work and to have low mileage, I installed before I went to add fluid I decided to drain it to see if it was dry. To my surprise it had almost 2 qrts and it was black af and smelt burnt , didn’t pay no mind I added fluid went to start it up the transmission didn’t do anything paid almost $900 if I wanted the same results I would have paid $200 at a local yard , moral of the story don’t trust or believe anything these jdm shops say. Because they’ll sell you trash
Actually they have laws there for their vehicles including harsh emissions regulations. Vehicles that are 10 years of age or 150k kms have to get an engine swap. Many people decide to dump the vehicle and buy new due to this.

As a Chinese, I have the same habit as the Japanese that I will sell my car if the odometer reaches 90,000 km. I won’t consider buying any used cars that are over 60,000km.

So I'm just curious, what's the myth? If people in Japan are changing their motors at 50,000 miles, then there are motors out there with 50,000 miles or less, and you're not saying we shouldn't buy them, but what you are saying is they may have more than 50,000 miles and nobody can really prove it? Did I confuse myself or did you confuse me? I'm lost.

@@MITONFILMS I don't think anyone's saying there's a law, but the rumor (as I heard it from a friend) is that there's a lot of traffic, cars run longer because they sit in that traffic, so mileage doesn't build up, even though the cars are running, so the alleged story is that they change their engines more often than most for 2 reasons:
1) the engines have more wear and tear at 50,000 miles than one would think. So to me it's actually a good practice.
Think about all the people in LA traffic. Their cars have far more wear and tear than the mileage would indicate.
2) The more miles, the more pollution a car emits, so they're doing it for their environment.
I guess the bottom line is the video did nothing to warn or distract me from looking into engines with less than 50,000 miles. And it really seemed like the guy who made this video contradicted himself - or maybe I misunderstood - but honestly I don't care enough. I just want an engine with low miles because I'm in the market.

This myth is really old, I remember hearing it back in the 1980's.
I purchased engine for Honda Accord 2005. Its true, it really had 62k miles on it. It is running great.

100k km is = to 62k US miles so about 60k miles is the average that most of their engines see, but I agree that if you don't pull the motor/transmission yourself you won't know for sure, also used items in japan tend to be of a lot less value so a used engine is usually cheaper. but to lessen your chances of getting a bad motor I like to pull the Valve cover and inspect the the head, if it's got a burned on dark brown/black oil color walk away from it, if it's golden or shiny looking your more likely to get a better taken care of motor that had the oil changes done on time, also don't run the motor with the timing belt that comes with a jdm motor, if the average motors sees 60k US miles, thats about when the t belt should be replaced, so I would say just change it for peace of mind, especially while the motor is out of the car it's a lot easier.
If the average person in Japan throws there car away between 100k - 120k kilometers then its safe to assume they have somewhere in the ball park of 90k miles which is still good

Im sure most importers do falsely advertise, but from dealing with hmotorsonline personally i can tell you that a majority of steves listings are dead on accurate since most of his motors are pulled from at least the front clip if not the whole car by his mechanics at his shop. So they can match the engine to an odometer reading on the clip/car they pulled it from. But maybe hes just lying to me🤔. I doubt it, Hes actually a really nice guy. You should call him

Japan is a small country so it makes sense that car are driven less distance than In America. My Jdm sti engine still had the factory timing belt which would mean most likely it's under 62000km since that's the change interval. The most important thing when buying a Jdm engine is warranty and compression test video.

It's not a myth. These engines have 60k miles and less. Due to emissions in Japan, they do get the engine/trans swaps at 60k or less. So it's not a myth black boy.

just put in a jdm trans on my sister 02 civic and cant get rid of cel p0740 lol I even put all sensors from the old trans and code still comes on lol seen a few vids that say that code stays on and this sucks because we live in California and it wont smog with a cel on .told her just sell that car because im not gonna do this job twice lol she only paid 250 bucks for the trans ,yes it shifts excellent but has that code .

Here's a question...so every year these cars in Japan need to get an inspection. I would think at the time of inspection the vehicles Vin is recorded and likely displayed mileage on the odometer right?? This should tie the mileage @ that time to the vehicle. When vehicle goes to the wrecking yard or whatever I imagine the Vin would be recorded into their inventory somehow. Is there no way to tie that engine then to said vehicle or paper trail mentioning the last recorded mileage?? I mean I'm not saying this 50k mile thing isn't a myth but why are they not ensuring the mileage on the engines accurate to their descriptions when selling. It really doesn't seem like it would be that challenging. There will of course be cases where clusters are swapped or something so mileage isn't verifiable but I'd guess that wouldn't be a normal occurrence.

I'm about to buy a JDM F23A for my Accord. Philadelphia has a "59,xxx mile" F23A and in all reality I couldn't give two shits about the mileage claim. My Accord has 174,xxx miles and it's burning oil like crazy (mind you I don't street race or anything let alone speed. I obey the limit because at one point I had 11 points on my DL). They could tell me it has 80,xxx miles, I'm still buying it. For $300 and all the new parts I'm getting for it (Timing belt, water pump, clutch, flywheel, etc.) you really cant beat that

Japan only drives a certain amount then they must get a new engine...so there is alot of engines for sale but....they sell them to big companys my buddy who came to america used to be involved with it...they sell the engines after 30k miles to other countrys for cheap in bulk...but it's not open to a consumer level

Ive been preaching this for years. Have bought couple of jdm engines my self. And while they have been in good condition, i know damn well they're not under 6 digits when it comes to miles. Its just common sense when you put all the hype aside.
I once bought a B20 from a JDM spot & it was a beast then I bought another one it had a abnormally bent valve....smh

JDM engines work under Kilometres Not miles, 1 kilometre is usually = 0.7mile.

These 100,000 km myths were dated back from the 1960's - late 70's when US & Japan automobiles qualities were not really that reliable. Most won't make it through the 5th years of ownership. Therefore it is time for trade in for a newer one.

Ohhhh If you are looking for swaps only do it to manual cars or there is a lot of money lost... if you wish to keep it automatic boosting is a possibility but be careful auto transmissions are weak when beaten on....

Ya don't believe the importers. The whole we'll replace it if it's no good isnt such a good deal when you factor in the cost of figuring that out in the first place and then ripping it back out and putting back in a new one all for another chance of rolling the dice. I've seen "low milage" JDM engines with "perfect compression" have the vanes rotted off on the water pumps, coffee grounds for oil, and turbos blown out, etc. Even the whole JDM cars imported here with 80-100km tend to have some type of catastrophic failure within a year of landing not to mention blow by.
If you're spending a bunch on a car in Japan you know you're gonna sell for peanuts in 10 years...why change the oil for the last 5 years....likewise if you're spending so much to drive a car and mod it in Japan why not drive the living piss out of it. lol.

apparently the 4-door integra is more balanced and handles better than the hatch. i don't know if it's true, as i've never owned a sedan integra. even if it's true.. the sedan just doesn't look right to me. it's too ugly

depends on how well built the engine is, There was tests done by Honda on NSX-R engines, and their results on engines that had over 200,000km showed that all the tolerances in the bearings and other wearing part locations showed no losses meaning no loss in power over the wear. But then again those R engines are hand built each and Honda is known for setting the Bar on the industry as having the highest quality bearings and tightest tolerances of all Manufactures.
