“He was all about being an artist”. This is why Guy Clark, Jackson Browne and James Taylor are such American treasures. They were story tellers and creative intellectuals with a canvas to paint, they are all so special in this way. And music just hasn’t been the same since.
I tried to see Guy Clark play every time he played in Nashville from 1979-1983 when I lived there. He was always great whether by himself or with a band. One time he pulled up at the back door of Cantrell’s in his old yellow International Harvester Scout, reached in the back seat and picked up a Telecaster lying on the back seat (not in a case) and walked in to get ready to play his set. He was great that night. Another time, he was playing solo and forgot the words to LA Freeway in the middle of the song. He stopped, looked at the audience and said, “that never happened before”, and started over. That really hit me how down to earth he was and what a gift he had as a songwriter, and that he was human.
Thank you for this interview. Guy Clark like many writers trusted their work even if the public and critics might not. The list of now well regarded writers who were not recognized when they wrote is long. Being a musician or writer is not work for the weak of heart or mind. The Lyle Lovett story is appreciated as well. One can wonder how many others who did not receive the helping hand and whose work is yet to be heard enough to be so honored.
