    The thing that hits hard is the realisation that Angel is now in hell. WITH A SOUL.
    So he now has to endure all he'll has to offer as Angel rather than as Angelus. Such a cruel twist for him as well as Buffy

    • @Dunybrook
      @Dunybrook 10 месяцев назад +2

      Might be the best thing for him to be honest. You know he's going to be torturing himself for everything Angelus did once he lost his soul anyway. Now at least he can take some solace that he's being punished.

    Snyder is one of those petty tyrants that always seem to find their way into positions of authority.
    This is one of the most heartbreaking episodes in the entire series.
    Buffy is suffering from severe trauma, ostracized from her friends, having to kill the love of her life (to this point--she's still young), and basically kicked out of her house . She's got a _lot_ of healing to do and it will be harder because trauma will continue to be dumped on her (I figure the fact that there are five more seasons is enough of a clue that this doesn't count as a spoiler).
    This show is one that constantly digs into the feels.

    You have to love (and be impressed by) how the audience reaction to Angel's death is twisted around so completely and so quickly. We get what we wanted, and it hurts. A lot.

    Right. Thoughts. I can haz them. Settle in, this is a long one.
    First and foremost: FINALLY someone makes a Joker reference when Spike attacks Angel. Thank you; geek points awarded.
    On Joyce: I know many out there think she’s amazing and all, but I’m of the opinion that she loves her daughter and she honestly tries, but at the end of the day she’s a middlin’ parent at best. We’ve even seen her acknowledge it at least once (“nice parenting form. little shaky on the dismount” from back at the start of season 1). Disclaimer: there’s no way to relay the whole story in a comment, but short version: I was kicked out of the house by my mother for good when I wasn’t much older than Buffy. For entirely different reasons (I am not the Slayer you’re looking for. Move along.) In later years I came to genuinely believe it was one of the better parenting decisions she made, but it does mean I’m probably a bit more…dunno. “something” about the scene than some others, though. “Sensitive” doesn’t feel right, and “raw” feels over the top. Pick a word that works for you. :)
    On the gay metaphor: it feels a bit heavy handed to me in places now. At the time of initial broadcast, I’m not sure it did. Or not as much. This show was a big deal among the freaks and geeks back in the day, and I suspect that scene was huge reason for that for some. There was effectively zero acknowledgment on TV (never mind representation) so a little thing like that scene would have meant a lot to some. No shade on your exasperation (if that’s what it was? I don’t always parse things correctly); there’s so much now we may have over-compensated somewhat.
    Last thing, which I always bring up when I can because it’s so subtle that I didn’t catch it for ages. If you look closely when Spike’s peeling away @17:10, look at the hand he has on the steering wheel. There’s a moment when it slips into sunlight and he recoils and shifts hands. It’s a little acting moment that just makes me happy. James Marsters: a pretty face, but not /just/ a pretty face.

    • @TheRiskPig
      @TheRiskPig  10 месяцев назад +1

      I can haz thoughts about your thoughts:
      I am sorry you were put through that. I hope you're in a better place, be that literally or figuratively. 🖤🥀
      Oh yeah, I remember the word "gay" even being said being such a huge deal. For a long time, I remember any reference to a sexuality other than hetero was either the limp wrist gesture or a clumsy metaphor. I just thought it was really silly. The exasperation was more about the easy/cheap joke. I remember shows making that speech for anything and everything BUT being gay. Anyone remember that one X-Men movie with Ice Man and his parents?
      For Spike's hand - Holy cow, I missed it! Thank you for pointing it out. James Marsters is so good. 😭

    Concerning stepping away from the group by running away: Xander has shown his opinion on the matter to the point of ostracizing Willow from Buffy with the lie. Giles is physically hurt, Oz and Cordelia aren't close with Buffy, she's kicked out of her home and school, is wanted for murder, and sent Angel to hell. Running sounds like the thing to do even if it isn't actually a sound idea. And it isn't like she isn't telling anyone she's leaving. The note she left her mom. I'm not really convinced that since Buffy decided to run, Joyce deserves anything more than said note. Let Buffy work things out without the judging crowd of friends and family pestering her around. It seems like a good option even if running away is dumb. Get away from the group while laying low from the cops. Looking at it from that angle is understandable. Buffy just chose to lay low by leaving town is my opinion.

    Jenny's voice is so ASMR in her scene with Giles. That was Xander's most infamous line ever in that scene telling Buffy to kick his ass. This is also Willow's "becoming" as she becomes a witch for real in this one. "Close your eyes." 😭 Yeah, Angel didn't look very dead being sucked into the portal, with his human soul no less. So that's why it's open-ended. 🤔 You have to watch that grr arrgh monster after the credits on this one.

    I’d say wait a bit on watching Angel. See what season of Buffy was out when they started Angel.
    You don’t want spoilers and spin offs tend to do that because of the typical time jumps and “connected” episodes.
    And no my pointing that out isn’t a spoiler because that’s what spin offs do. They assume watchers are caught up on the original show.

  • @Michael75579
    @Michael75579 11 месяцев назад +5

    The first season of Angel runs in parallel to the fourth season of Buffy, so I'd wait until then to start watching it. If you do watch Angel, don't watch the title sequence when watching the first episode; it has major spoilers for the first episode in it. There are brief glimpses of other episodes in the title sequence as well, but nothing that would spoil them.

    To be fair to Joyce, I think Buffy ran away in large part to run away from herself. Joyce telling her not to come home was just a pebble thrown in the ocean of Buffy's guilt at this point. She feels guilty for "killing" Angel when they slept together, for Jenny's death, for Kendra's death, for Giles being tortured, Willow and Xander injured; and then for having to kill Angel all over again. She's just 17 years old and way more mature than she has any right to be at that age. But she's just 17. She's been given so much responsibility that her reflex is to rely on herself alone... but the last months (of her life) have been brutal on her.
    Anyway, I love your reactions. You bring so much enjoyment and compassion to them. They are a joy to watch.

    Becoming part 2 was a terrific ending to S2 setting up the brilliant S3. Here we see Buffy faced with the ultimate heart breaking choice to kill her lover or save the world. We of course know she will make the right choice. Willow comes through at the end, but Buffy has to go through with the final act. So poignant at the end when from afar Buffy sees her friends but decides to leave Sunnydale, Joyce too is so regretful as she knows Buffy is now gone after their terrible row, all against the backdrop of Sarah McLachlan's beautiful haunting ballad Full Of Grace. I think we can see you are now hooked on the show, as are all reactors that enter 'The Buffyverse' and it only gets better. You will love S3 it's incredible!

    9:59 I kind of feel sorry for actors like Kristine Sutherland that portray the parents in teen dramas. In order to give the young person the independence to get in and out of adult trouble, the parent has to be played as an oblivious complacent doofus. Who is so negligent she lets her 16 year old daughter go out in the middle of the night and come back all banged up while somehow remaining ignorant that she is constantly in mortal danger. Yet she also must come across as a loving caring mother. Kudos, Kristine, for threading that needle!

    • @LoganBluth
      @LoganBluth 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, it's a pretty big shift for Joyce to make with regards to her perception of reality:
      "Hey Mom, so yeah, I was mystically chosen to fight supernatural creatures like vampires.
      Oh, yeah, BTW, vampires exist...
      Which means some form of life after death exists.....
      Which implies souls and an afterlife exist.......
      Which includes some form of "hell" since vampires are basically demons..........
      Which may also imply some sort of god or gods exist...........?
      Who knows, but the one absolute fact is that you now have concrete proof that supernatural things do in fact exist. And my job is to slay them. Okay, good talk, gotta go stop an apocalypse, love ya, bye!"

    I don't get why Xander is so hated for not telling Buffy that Willow was reattempting the curse. What do you think she would have done differently had she known? I promise you, Xander knew precisely what she'd do. She would have held back in the fight against Angelus just waiting fir Angel to reemerge. But, Angelus wiuld not have been holding back and that would have been the surest way for Buffy to end up dead in a way that cannot be reversed with CPR. Buffy makes decisions differently when it comes to Angel. She's thinking as a teen girl in love with him, not as the Slayer. Xander knows this. His choice was made mostly to protect Buffy from herself and only partly because of his feelings about Angel.
