I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. I couldn’t agree with you more! Some videos on here about making a RV for camping from an old vehicle the comments are terrible! People just comment about what the person should’ve done to make the camper “the proper way”. When you make it from expensive materials you end up worrying about damaging something when I would rather be in a tent and have fun without worrying! Lighten up people! I survived a two winters by heating solely with that same stove. It kept myself and two elderly dogs comfy in a trailer followed by a cottage. We had no power or utilities, so I also cooked many a dinner on it as well. A very memorable part of my life.

Couple of things I’d do , turn stove sideways and closer to wall , co2 needs to be closer to the floor ( the gas is heavier then air ) , one inch insulation ( foam ) on walls and ceiling ( maintains heat better and bunk bed with a couch and chairs and small table ! Perfect cabin ! Once you insulate your wood consumption will go way down and foam board and aluminum tape is cheap ! Plus carpet and split wood outside because of bugs in the wood ! Just some well used ideas I’ve done to my cabin in N. Minnesota !
I would use 2nd hand china plates! No polluting the air and in a small plastic bowl with warmish water and detergent - perfectly clean!
CO meter has to be high. yes CO is heavier then air, but it is a hot gas at that moment so lighter.

It's essentially identical to N2 in density (12+16=28 g/mol vs. 14+14=28 g/mol), which makes up 80% of the atmosphere. The temperature difference is also non-existent within a few seconds, at which point it mixes evenly with the air.

When my brother bought some land, he found an old cabin in the very back part of it he cleaned it up. He put a wood burning stove in it and rented it out for $500 a weekend. That’s how he got his start and then later on, he opened up a bed-and-breakfast with all these little campers he’s gone now and he’s missed so much

That truck brought me back almost 40 years! One of the Bachman pretzel factories was a few blocks from my house growing up. The trucks were ubiquitous. We would often go knock on a door on the side of the factory and sometimes a worker would open the door and give us some warm pretzel sticks right off the conveyor belt.

I know that a lot of people are probably going to say this because already a few people have commented this. The metal roof was quickly thrown on as a solution to stop the water damage from happening, but to my surprise the cinder blocks are more than adequate enough to hold down the metal roofing. This property experienced a microburst during the storm yesterday and 47 substantial trees that I know of so far have come down. It's going to be a very long cleanup that I probably won't be able to get to until the spring but amazingly the roof did not fly off, it has very little space to catch wind. Thanks for watching (edit) people who are mad about me pushing the hole in the Catalyst of the stove, this is a cheap knockoff stove that didn't even go together correctly when I was assembling it. If I didn't do that it wouldn't have worked properly even among my initial startup it would just smother with the door shut, I ordered it from China and I got what I paid for but with the entire thing removed it works fine and now heats up hotter. Also the top of this stove is all one piece, the burners do not remove it is a very cheap stove

Well your probably going to have a lot of firewood for the camp after the storm. Just wondering would you consider some styrofoam insulation on the walls to help with keeping the difference in temp internally and externally? Love the idea for reusing the truck.

As a helicopter guy, I’m guessing they were out looking for someone or on a patrol (depending on if rescue or police/rangers) but your heat would have been visible to the FLIR, and as such, they probably investigated. Not a big deal but kinda cool that you had the attention of an eye in the sky.

Because I raised tropical aquatic plants in my basement.
Blew shingles off my roof did $15,000 worth of damage.
I got angry and called the FAA to report them. I went outside to get the. Tail numbers but the pilot must have suspected that was what I was trying to do single turned so I couldn't see them (I know the copter belongs to the local sheriff dept. )
What had happened is I was on the phone with the FAA and he came back!
I the guy from the FAA was on the phone and didn't believe me when I said ," I could hit him with a rock '
Then he heard the copter outside and said yeah he sounds close .. I replied , I'm in my basement!
That's when he damaged my house.
I contacted the pilot, at his home I'm a network security engineer so I know everything lol. He wasn't happy about my FAA call!
Started threatening me, I said Im an engineer and own a cable launcher and his tail rotor is an easy target, he hasn't come back..
It's been a few years, I'm going to look him up, find out what he's flying currently and make another complaint to the FAA.

I used to hike around in the Central Cascades, the lava beds and even out into the High Desert in search of wildlife, waterfalls and anything else of interest. Would have loved to visit your country before I became incapacitated.

Put a small heat exchanger on your flue pipe, will increase efficiency tremendously. Wood stoves draw cold air from outside, create an air supply as near the stove as possible
Kinda crazy with how hard that door is to slide open that it opened on you while you were sleeping. Might want to put a lock on the door from the inside just for the protection

A tiny wood stover will have to be stoked and resupplied with wood every couple of hours or so. You will not get any sleep if you intend to use it overnight because you'll have to get up so often to stoke and resupply it with wood. But it looks like you're doing a great job of fixing up the truck.

Having been on YT since the beginning I have a few tips for finding good comment sections. Look at the content. Stay away from comment sections of channels that review things, post opinions, make instructional videos, have a lot of sponsored content, or generally have ANY political leanings. I find the channels that where the content doesn't challenge things AT ALL to be best. Also channels that it isn't about the activities but about the creator. Post is both. Who doesn't like to play in the water? And it's also about hanging out virtually with Post. Take Steve Wallis on here for example. It's just a goofy Canadian dude camping. His comments are usually pretty good because he content is more about hanging out with Steve than anything. Which if you don't watch Post's other channel where he eats old ass food...go check that out.

I have greatly enjoyed watching this video. I used to do a lot of fishing, camping, hiking during my teens and early 20s before I went off to college and then joined the Army. So, I applaud you for doing these things while you are young. I've only watched a couple of your videos so far, but I hope to see you camping with a dog or two in some of your videos. Some of the best memories I have include having a faithful dog by my side as I was out camping, hiking, etc. Anyway, keep exploring and be safe out there.

Yeah, everyone needs a dog. Not a hunting dog type though, he would take off in those woods and you'd be spending all your time trying to find him/her. A protective, working type dog like my favorite, a German Shepherd would be good.

(I'm a nurse and just cringe when I see unprotected hands wrestling with sharp metal and shards of glass.) I'm 45 now, I used to do this stuff all the time. Over the years auto accidents, atv and motorcycle crashes, sports injuries and just random hard headed carelessness has taken its toll on my body unfortunately. But I miss it. I understand that being told, be careful, watch what your doing, be cautious, don't do that alone, it's too dangerous etc can be annoying but from experience it does pay to listen in the long run and overall scheme of things. I didnt have anyone who gave a damn enough to constantly stay on my case about being careful. So @post10 I agree with Darlene Bradley. Stay safer now and get to do it a lot longer.

Looks like a good camping spot! Great job. I think I would have put the bed where the stove is and put the stove farther back. That way you're near the exit in case of fire. Nobody comes there and steals stuff? Cut in some old windows. By the way the stove pipes are upside down. Crimped end down so any cresote that runs down inside the pipe won't run outside the pipe where you don't really want it catching fire.

Tip for anyone that wants to emulate something like this truck. If you coat the interior walls with blankets, it will retain the heat inside the truck and help you save wood. For something like a "casual" camp it probably doesn't matter but it can save you some effort in the long run. You can usually find thick flannel or wool blankets at the thrift store too!

Or just use insulation
The foil bubble roll stuff at home store. Works good reflecting the heat back inward.

Hi Post, you should never have poked that hole into that plate. It is there to STOP the heat going straight up the chimney so that he heat is trapped in the stove. Either that damper on chimney is not open enough ir you need to see if there is a damper on the unit itself Also you need to clear out that ash in the bottom of stove before lighting a new fire or there must be a riddler handle on the unit somewhere. All stoves make a little smoke when lit untill enough heat to start drawing up flue. Also keep door closed so fire burns slower to heat stove and slow down combustion. Read the manual that came with unit, it may have info.

Just found out about this second channel a day ago can't believe how versed you are in skills even if they don't seem technical they sure are valuable. This gave me more inspiration to do something like this even if it isn't the best to begin with its a work in progress and that is the number one thing, would be a good start and then slowly make a cabin or something out of the resources. I enjoy your videos so much. The main reason is even when things don't go as planned you accept it and learn from it. Most of us are such spoiled people that it is a reminder that we actually could live with much less.
Good job! Just a tip from someone who has many years in the kitchen. You don't have to fuss with peeling garlic. Lay the clove on a hard surface, and give it a whack. The skin slips right off. I lay my butcher knife over it, but you could use the bottom of a cup or saucepan. It doesn't take much force to loosen the peel.
You are letting people know you can survive quite nicely. Spending a few days just shoring up your little abode, I'm thinking it will bring much joy being close to nature. I'm a Floridian born and raised in the south, and I do admire a northerners tenacity to live in this cold, cold climate. You deal with bears we deal with Gators and other creepy crawlies. Awesome video, and I'm looking forward to the next adventure.

Florida has bears too. My home in miami had a bear alert after fourth of July. It was a black bear but they aren't aggressive. They usually just run. Bobcats, iguanas, snakes, and tegu are...lovely. Haven't seen a panther yet.

A couple of tricks to keep in mind, one is bringing the wood for the day in early enough to melt by the door. Then it's dryer when you split it. And another is a shelving rack for over the back of the table. Helps expand the usable space and a place to sort out your extra things on the table.
@@river4462 That depends on the wood you use. Some woods can last a long time in a fire and some, as the trash wood shown, just go up too fast. A day's worth works for when you already have the fire going so it will be dry in about 3 to 4 hours.

Another goofy move .. tromp around inthe water and stir up mud to wash dishes in.. not suppose to use soap because cast iron is porus and the soap gets in the pores of tbe metal .. put skillett on the stove get it hot and put some water iin it while its hot ... use paper towel to wipe out then put some oil in the warm pan ..wipe out again ..done

I lived in an RV with my native husband for 3 years and our stove was all we had. Our first winter was in a dilipadated trailer...past 2 winters was an RV with no electricity, no running water, solar. Our first winter we survived with only an ax...and mostly Pine wood. This pine creates ALOT of cresote, especially when it's 19' below or more. Make sure that pine is dry. We learned our lessons well. My dear ol hubby is still out there. You should consider elevating the bed on a loft like a bunk bed. It will warm more evenly and closer to the roof is reflective heat, warmer and comfy. Plus you could use under the bed for more storage. You would want your fingertips to barely touch the ceiling when stretching and when seated on bed for feet to hang over barely touching the ground.
FYI, the flat cast iron pan can be used as a lid for the two shallow cast iron skillets.
Good suggestion. His 1lb of bacon would've cooked much faster that way instead of putting it in that huge Dutch Oven pot which acted more as a heat sink instead of applying the heat to the bacon itself - it would've cooked quicker in a smaller skillet with lightweight lid of some sort.
Make a refrigerator, use the inside where the engine goes. Shelves, tint your side door window. A nice little camp. Best wishes
You are so clever. Your cabin in the woods is awesome. Next trip to the dollar store remember to get a dust pan, coffee mug, tin foil, area rugs, wooden spoon so you don’t scratch your cast iron, any other utensils you might need and a big sponge to clean up melted ice on the floor. Have fun.

My partner's grandparents used to own a dairy delivery company. His grandfather passed away 20 years ago and she has around a dozen of these delivery vans. We are moving off grid within the year and inspired us to start getting a few of these vans going again and abandon building the tiny home we have under construction. Excellent video!

When starting a cold stove, make a "torch" with newspaper. Light and hold the torch as long as you can deep in the stove and held up as high as you can. Repeat if needed. This will help heat up the pipe to get the air-draw started before you light the kindling.

Great idea!! Customize an old truck and install a wood stove to keep out the cold and it's fun to watch!! You can camp in a comfortable space.
A little tip on cleaning the cast iron:
If you don't want to clean while it's still hot, after I cook, I put some extra cooking oil in it while it cools. It helps loosen up all of the stuff left behind and makes it easier to wipe with a paper towel out once you drain it. Plus, any excess oil left behind can be used to season. Kind of a two-for-one deal.
Even better tip for cleaning cast iron: dishwashing liquid isn't "soap," it's detergent. Detergent is safe to use on cast iron. Unless you're making your own soap with fat and lye, the stuff you wash the rest of your dishes with is cast iron safe. It's the lye in *actual* soap that's harmful to cast iron.
@@DonOblivious I use salt & water to scrub with. It doesn't take the oil out.
You can pee in a pan too. The acidity of your pee will loosen material IN A HOT PAN. Wipe the pan clean and be sure to get the pan hot before next cook. Obviously, this is only useful when water is scarce.
The other option is throw away the pots and pans and buy new ones. Depends on your budget...
Just cook, eat, repeat!
I'm sure by now you have figured out that the stove sticking into the middle of the floor is a pain. Moving the stove parallel to the wall with the door facing the bed will be a nice setup. Might want to put some screen around the chimney top so nothing crawls in. One of those wood stove fans will help.

I heated 2 rooms with the same stove. It took a few weeks to figure it out, I used bigger pieces of oak and maple, once it got going good I closed the flu about 80% ,you have to slow down the burn. You have to keep exit pipe almost closed otherwise all your heat just goes out the pipe.
32:29 exactly closing the pipe keeps the heat in. But this is awesome always enjoy your content and I love camping videos keep up the good work.

I believe the chimney should have been installed at a 45 degree angle, at least, because smoke rises but only if there is there is way to allow it to do that. The ideal position will be straight up so there is no issue with the rising smoke but that is my thought. But I need to say I commend you for taking a difficult situation and making it much, much better for you needs. Wishing you the best!!
Also, be careful about throwing grease or food scraps out in the woods anywhere near your camp. Won't take the wildlife too long to figure out you're a food source!
Yes, but on the other hand, drawing the wildlife in could be a food source in itself.

This whole setup reminds me of my Dad. He had a hunting camp that had an old Bookmobile from the 1930s as the camper. Extremely primitive. The Bow hunters in my family have used it for close to 40 years. Not my kind of adventure, but it created tremendous memories/stories for 3 generations so far. Miss you Dad. To control a more consistent heat and make your wood last longer during the night you need to load the stove and close the door. You will have a more consistent and long-lasting heat. Also try to reduce bringing in excessive snow, as it melts inside and makes humidity that will freeze to the cold walls then melt when you heat up the room.
Good point. Also in using wet wood can crack cast iron. If it cracks over time it will happen on the bottom of fire box. To prevent this stove brick layered on bottom of fire box will preserve it for years to come.

If you close your fire place door, & turn the flu so the air flow is just slightly open, your wood will last longer, & the heat will radiate into the room. Smart to put hard wood in at night, it can last up to 3 hrs. This is So Awesome what you've done here! I always keep a battery operated cd player / radio handy too, for weather reports, & to listen to books / music on cd. You can put snow in the bottom of your ice chest, lay paper over it, & set your eggs & bacon on it to keep them cold.

I like that you did most important things first - got the stove, roof & windshield up & running & made sure you had enough wood to get thru whatever was coming, had food, etc. A person never knows what situation they might face.

It is a good workout using the log splitter. Butter gives good taste but you need some olive oil that takes heat and doesn’t burn. Some take the lids off and cook on the flame. Looks good I’d have to have onions in it and a chunk of bread to sop up the juice!👍🏻 It’s a really cool place!
I always said I wanted a cabin in the woods. Well this is a great idea. I believe you are a very ingenious fellow. This would satisfy me for being the little cabin in the woods thing I've had in my wants in life. And you buying the land that was very smart. Very simple needs. The only thing and that I would have to have would be a window so to sit by it and watch everything or nothing. Just to chill out and drink coffee. You did good young man.
