It blows my mind that this type of music was being made in '85. The way they look and perform is obvious Nirvana took from them. Way ahead of their time. I wonder what did they listened to in order to come up with this sound.
Keep digging. There's more out there. Listen to Big Black and fIREHOSE (and the Minutemen before them)--and, as someone else very accurately suggested, the Meat Puppets. Yes, Husker Du. Maybe Mission of Burma. People mention Black Sabbath a lot. When I first heard Dinosaur, I also associated them with some of the DC punk sounds, which I know isn't quite right, but it was the college rock thing mixed with punk and a little country-tinged psychedelia. Their cover of Frampton's "Show Me the Way" is instructive, too.
It's hard to imagine that J had written the album "Dinosaur" by this time. It's also hard to imagine that he will go on to write the rest of the music that we all love and enjoy everyday (Bug, Green Mind, Where You Been, Without A Sound, Hand It Over, More Light, Free So Free, Beyond, Farm, I Bet On Sky, Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not). Thanks J!
And all the music from and inspired by and from others writing with Barlow, Lest we may forget ,hopefully not ERIC GAFFNEY SEBADOH founder, inventor of lo-fi, tape recording experiments, sebadoh, Sentridoh, folk implosion, JASON LOWENSTEIN'S at 5's & 7's one of the best 90s albums or albums of all time , not a filler in that entire album
Raisans here is seriously like the best performance of this song they did. It captures the same emotion as the album track. I mean, every time they play it is great but it’s never quite this close. Just a shame they didn’t play The Lung as well in this footage. I think Kracked, Lung, and Raisans are the best songs they ever wrote
Yes! The solo from the studio version will forever remain unmatched but this performance was great. Those huge bends in the album track are devastating - truly anguished wails. Resonated well with 13yo me...and 45yo me.
Absolutely bro they are all badass but Lou never got any of that credit Lou reps ass the other band sourdough something like that I don't spell it write bad to the Bone how about j mascis and the fog ripping s***bad to the bone thanks for posting that indeed he makes me tired just watching him play good energy
@Ronald McDonaldtrump they had right under the student Union a Communications club room. Its probably one of those guys that used to work there. My buddy used to be a communications major and we hung there many times.
Great upload. Nice to see lives of songs that hadn't been on an album yet. So neat to see them evolve and super glad that they are still making such wonderful albums.
It's so cool to see the Jazzmaster that if I'm not mistaken, is the one he and his dad got at the beginning of him learning to play guitar and now has eventually led to his own fender Jazzmaster set up the both purple and white. I've met with J several times but his guitar has never been a topic... this is something that's followed J since the beginning and produces that awesome sound of course with that touch of fuzz! Long Live J Mascis!
The fact that Mascis had only been learning guitar for a short time, having previously been on drums, means that he must be some genius-level savant to be singing and playing guitar like this, with these incredible songs, at 20 years of age. Ludicrous.
One of the greatest bands ever...and great right from the early days! That these guys still play pubs and clubs while some of the "'...'s got talent" type acts play arenas is insane.
Just saw them today at some microbrewery in BFE Ohio. The sound guy was a clown (mix was terrible) and it was still one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen! Raw talent of this ensemble shone through true and bright.
This is kind of remarkable.... a document of DJ having drawn up the plans for grunge, shoegaze, noise pop, etc, well before these genres even really existed... all in a big sloppy mess without even plugging all their channels in.
Also this video gives me sympathy for Lou's plight.... he's an awkward kid with a lot of songwriting talent, who finds himself in a band with someone of equal songwriting talent and other-worldly instrumental talent. Working with J gave him so much opportunity, but J's aloofness also constrained him so much - you can see it in this video. In some ways it had to end the way it did a few years later - Lou couldn't continue in his shadow this way, he had too many songs in his head that would have never seen the light of day in the original dynamic of DJ. And neither of them had the communication/interpersonal skills to work this out at that time. He had to leave. I'm just glad they figured it out eventually.
I'm looking for this version of poledo (I think), but it's a home recording and Lou sings a line which says "I've been kicked outta dinosaur" or something like that, and later cracks. I remember listening to it on youtube years ago, and couldn't find it anywhere now. Maybe I'm delusional but I swear I heard that track
Young J. resembles one of Anthrax's guitarists in this footage! Seriously, though, he's one of the most under-appreciated guitarists outside of '80s/'90s "alternative" music afficianados' fandom, that is
Well J's got his 65 jazzmaster, probs had his deluxe big muff, a wah, and maybe a flanger at this point. Maybe the butler tube driver too. Amps looks like Marshall jmp 50 and probs a 100 watt super bass into a bullfrog 412 cab, or at least thats what he was usually using around this time.
its probably his clone theory he would've gotten it by this time. this gig was right around when they recorded side 1 of YLAOM in the Fall '86. he didnt have the clone theory for the first record just big muff electric mistress and wah.
You're living all over me is my favourite rock album of all time.
My 2 after Group sex.

The Stooges were one of J's favourite bands, if you listen to their Raw Power album, you can definitely hear influences
Probably Husker Du and The Replacements.
And Meat Puppets

Wonderful music that has only gotten better through time!
sorry lou we didn't have you plugged in.
Lon Old Sun, did you have something to do with putting this show on?
no.
no. the rathskeller 85 is a really good early performance too.

Damn J comin in here with that S tier level mullet drip🦦🍞
He used to put eggs in his hair to make it look like Nick Cave's hair in the early '80s.
And Lou looking like McLovin

It’s just incredible that this exists. Thank you!
Thank you a 1000 times. My youth back for a few minutes ...
That version of Raisans is solid. It seems like that was the new song at the time. And Lou accidentally missed the last part up. Poor Lou
Them, pixies and sonic youth realy shape the 90s alternative rock.
these kids are barely 20. unbelievable
