I have a 2020 Frontier SV 4x4 long bed crew cab with 55k miles. This was the first year for the vq38 / 9 speed. Zero issues so far. It tows well and does what you want it. It's easy to clean and I have zero complaints except the turning radius. The largest difference in driving the 9 speed vs traditional lower geared transmissions is you need to be deliberate in the throttle asking it to do what you want. It likes to rev and is playful. I really enjoy the truck and will have it for a long time. It's just good at nearly everything.
Yes, turning takes some foresight which can at times make things a little more exciting than necessary. And the you can tell the truck wants to sing but I don’t allow it.
I had Nissan for over 2 decades all manual transmission (cars, trucks, SUVs). But with no manual transmission option on the 2024 Frontier eliminates it from my very short list. Which is now super short. I do not need nor want more computerized stuff on my vehicle. For me power locks, windows, mirrors, seat are border line too "hi- tech" but I can live with it. Keyless starters, electronic parking break, automatic transmission, start/stop engine, hybrid or electronic engine(s), electronic dash, among many other stuff is stuff I can not have on my vehicles. I guess if I want a Frontier I will need to get an older used one. I know the Frontier does not use the incredibly unreliable Jatco CVT transmissions. But I never had (or personally heard of) a single issue on the Nissan (Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda, Isuzu) manual transmissions. Yes, the clutch can wears out but ~$1K later (usually less) and is as good as new.

Screw that "infotainment" crap. I have a phone with all of that, plus factory stereos are weak. Is it more safe to operate because it's in the dash? More tech, more to fail, more costly to buy or fix. I'd buy a luxury car if that was important to me. Nope!

Literally didn't have $$$ back then. Now that I could buy one for cash, they only build electronic everything suburban toys.

Especially liked that you shared your height when you jumped into the rear seat. The only (undesirable) feature I didn't hear comment about existence / non-existence of Auto-stop (e.g., engine switch-off at complete stop [hate that!]).

Great review on the base Frontier, which is geared more as a work truck. I have a 2023 Pro 4X which is a great capable truck. Power steering, no fancy gimmicks and a naturally aspirated engine for better reliability. Cruise control is awful, but other than that, I love it.

Thank you Tyler for such a "realistic" review. 😉 With the new Tacoma's skyrocketing in price I was wondering if this might be a good alternative for people that still want a simple truck that was affordable. But this just made me really appreciate my base 22' SR grade Tacoma even more. My truck is loaded compared to this. And I know it will last forever and hold it's resale value. So for now I think I'll just recommend a good used Tacoma for those that just want a simple truck that won't break the bank like the new 24' Tacoma's will. 👍

@@Blue-moon12 I'm a retired truck driver. My Kenworth T-800 with 3406 Cat power and 18 speed transmission could get from 0-60 in 90 seconds on flat ground with a full 80,000 lb. load. I don't have a problem getting to 60 in 11 seconds in my 4 cylinder Tacoma. It's all a matter of perspective. And I find the seats and driving position fine in my 22' SR.

My old 8' bed with a camper shell makes weekend camping with a cot and full-size mattress a breeze. Now I can't even buy an 8'. Need at least a 6.5' with a built in shell that doesn't leak and has side windows with screens. No need for crew cap just enough extended to fit my ice chest and stove. Nobody care about how easy the short tour camping guy with no dang travel trailer needed for deep woods 4x4. It would be the bomb for some of us. G friends always liked the roughing it with a bed just fine. Already getting ready for the woody or the woods rather
I used to drive a 2018 frontier king cab s for work even though it was a 4 cylinder it did great on flat ground but didn’t like going uphill at all but other than that it was an awesome midsize truck and was just all around a simple truck for work
Looks like what I want in a truck except I'd rather have a physical key to both get into the vehicle and to start the engine (rather than a push button). My personal quirks are no CD player (no brands have those anymore), and why have a tachometer when you don't have a stick shift? I know those are minor, but making every possible feature electronic and/or software controlled for the 'hi-tech buzz' and no other reason are silly. The Frontier does less of it, but its still annoying.
Sadly with an automatic transmission. The good thing with halogen lights is that the bulbs are easy to replace with LEDs, which are brighter, whiter, and last longer. I swapped my wife's old sealed beams to H4s for under $100. Now she has better lights than my crappy Jeep HIDs.
I have been a Toyota loyalist for decades but these new turbo Tundra/Tacoma have made me lose faith in them. Hopefully, they don't make the same mistake with the next generation RAV4.
I'm in the market for one of these trucks and have been looking at dealer websites to see what's available. I have yet to see one of these plain models at any dealer I've checked with.
I checked in my area and no Frontier 4x4 4 door in S trim for not even close to $31,000, try closer to $36,000. Even a 4x4 S trim package in King Cab configuration is more than the $31,000 advertised here.
I like to pump the gas for 2 or 3 seconds to run through the gears. I will get about 26 mpg if I try but I am happy with more than 22. I’ve had the truck automatically stop itself while reversing and I thought it’s will to survive was cute. It also likes to beep when it senses a collision.
It's sad how much the price of this basic truck, which was once the least expensive truck in America, has gone up just since 2017. In 2017, the base price of a Frontier S King Cab 4x2 was $18,390. The same model 2024 truck starts at $30,510 (an increase of over $12K or 65%). In 2017, you could outfit your Frontier S with a 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission; in 2024, you can only get a 6 cylinder and a 9 speed automatic. The destination charge has jumped from $960 in 2017 to $1510 in 2014, an increase of $550 or 57%. This is why so many people (myself included) would rather drive an older model than the most recent model available.
Good truck for pizza and liquor store delivery LOL. I’d probably get tired of the base “S” after a year. That outside mirror with no electronic switch to adjust it is just to CHEAP! Got to have electronic mirror control switch and delete that worthless rear seat, just make the back area all storage, make the front seats more comfortable, make that infotainment better, add telescopic steering wheel and retune that motor so the torque kicks in sooner in lower rpm’s for a better driving experience.
I appreciate the basic-ness of the frontier, but that turning radius sucks. I had a 2018 for all of 9 months because 12 mpg also sucks! I hope the 3.8 actually gets better mpg's.
It's comically awful in a parking lot! The previous owner of this one seemed to average 20 mpg and I've heard good things so I'd say they improved it. I think the 9 speed made a big difference.
Do you floor it everywhere you go? My 2012 4x4 6 speed was getting 13 mpg towing a 12 foot box trailer with a passenger, 2 dirt bikes, gear, ice chests, gas cans, tools, etc. on a trip north to Oregon. Everyday unloaded, I get 17-18 with BFG KO2's. Got around 20 with street tires.
I have a 2022 Frontier SV crew cab 4x4. I've averaged 19.5 mpg overall. On the interstate, I routinely get 24 to 25 MPG. I'm very satisfied, especially with that V6 power.
This is a much better deal than what Toyota has to offer. Toyota's Tacoma is now unreliable, overpriced, and turbo-charged. NO THANK YOU TOYOTA. You want $50K for a mid-level pickup? Stuff it Toyota! I will buy something else if that is how you are going to treat me, one of your most loyal customers. I will buy a Frontier for $10K less money, with a V6 engine! I just wish Nissan would build a standard cab, with a 6 foot bed, with just two-wheel-drive.
Lease is ending on my 23 Frontier Pro4X and I’ll miss it. But the transmission is all over the place when decelerating and quality control is terrible, at least on mine. One of the least expensive options in this segment, but resale is reflective of that.
Your lease is ending on a 23? I heard some got the transmission reflash on the 22s that helped, did you try that? The truck I drove was great and had 20k on it!
@@Realistick, yes it’s an 18mo lease, and I got it November 2022. Trans - update done at 2,220mi, and had the trans valve body replaced after a check engine light. Up shifts are seamless, but downshifts on deceleration are erratic and abrupt.
@@0HOON0 inside, almost perfect. Exterior - panel fitment on both front doors (bottom 6 inches, adjacent to rear doors) aren’t flush/bowed out. Some bed frame undercoating missing, and at least a dozen dust nibs in paint (not tiny either). Sunroof glass was pretty crooked, but I aligned it myself. The transmission valve body replaced at 2,220mi and a rear diff whine at 40-42mph (only at that speed). There’s a lot to like about my loaded P4X though, and I’ll miss it!
Good truck, (except) the power steering probably worse I drove, if they had different power steering ratio or electric power steering. I would definitely buy this truck. Great around Towner, the V6 200k+ truck will actually last more than 10 years, yeah old school S.B.
Just want to know if Frontier have any major issues before I buy one? My wife used to own an Altima back in late 90's and that thing got so many issues before she got rid of it.
To get heated seats, you have to upgrade to SV model $3000 extra, buy tech package for $1000 extra, then you can buy the convenience package, $2,200 extra . Then you get heated seats . You can’t get heated seats any other way.😮 the pro 4 X doesn’t come in a king cab which I need to get a 6’ bed. The back seat in the crew cab is only good for kids in back and the 5’ bed is useless for the working man. I like the truck, but the packages are designed so you buy a lot of options you don’t need to get the few you want. Also, it’s probably the only pickup that doesn’t come with a trailer hitch. The only model with a locking differential is the pro 4X. The S and SV 4wd models really need it. Not very good off road without the locker.😮
I want to love the Frontier as a value option but Nissan's commitment to longevity is questionable. Best option for a cheap, durable new truck might still be a previous gen SR trim Taco. (If you can find one)
Hate to break it to nissan fanboys but nissan is being forced into a turbo 4. Go ask them yourselves. They are just behind the game like always. This new frontier is the same truck from 2019 except new body work
The King Cab does at least still have access doors so it's useable. Toyota really dropped the ball on the 24' Extra Cab in that regard by removing the doors.
@@tinhinnh Oh me too. I was just trying to give credit where credit was due. I'll never stop bashing Toyota for removing the doors on the Access Cab. That was a very bad move. I'm so glad I got my Access Cab when I did.
That used to be the way the first "aero" mirrors were designed 30 or so years ago. I haven't seen it done since though. I think it was a huge mistake for Nissan to do that in this day and age. Even my base SR Tacoma 4 cyl. 4x2 access cab came standard with power and heated mirrors.
Remember boys and girls, that engine is DI only. Tacoma, even third gen, is port amd DI injected. Carbon buildup can occur with DI engines. Buyer be aware. You pay more for Tacoma but you get real reliability. Also, steering is ridiculously hard.
You can navigate buildup with fuel induction services (not fuel additives) every 25k. It seems to reduce the issue so it never becomes a big problem but kudos to toyota for the d4s system that eliminates that extra bit of maintenance that most don’t do anyway!
I personally know 6 hardbody from the 80s that have went over 400k , I almost bought the new one in 2022 but they had dealer pac . So I got a tundra 4x4 for Msrp ❤
A GDI engine is a poor choice. Port injection is cheaper and last longer then the scam that is gasoline direct injection. Carbon build up at 150k miles .... Come on man.
What ever happened to the Nissan that were made inexpence and made tough like the Datsun 620? Oh i know, when they changed the name "Nissan "and were made cheaper.
Can anyone tell me what the seating position feels like in this truck? Tried the '21 and '23 Taco and felt like I was sitting on the floor and couldn't see over the hood as a 5'6" driver.
It’s a little better than that but the lumbar is worse (at least on the base) the redesigned tacoma should be much better if you’re really concerned on seat comfort!
The frontier is pretty easy to see out of, but the comfort on the S was just okay for me at 6'3. It's worth a look but if you can afford it, try a new tacoma too!@@JBLynch
I’m 5’4” and I own a new Frontier. Seating position is fantastic compared to the pre-2024 Tacoma. (I’ve driven both trucks). The Frontier’s view is high and commanding. Feels like a normal truck. My only gripe is the hood is long and square and it’s sometimes difficult to tell how close I am to something. As for the Tacoma - I felt like I was literally sitting on the floor of the truck with my legs straight out! Worst driving position I’ve experienced in ANY vehicle! Made for a miserable drive in a rented Taco traveling from AZ to CA and back.
It's a better truck than Toyota at least they have a frame that will last. I bought one had a Toyota the Toyota want know where the nissan went they run a lot better and cost a lot less
For the same MSRP, you're getting the low output tacoma. Similarly equipped, the Frontier is cheaper and you can actually get them below sticker whereas the 24 Tacos are pretty hard to come by at the moment!

I used to drive a 2018 frontier king cab s for work even though it was a 4 cylinder it did great on flat ground but didn’t like going uphill at all but other than that it was an awesome midsize truck and was just all around a simple truck for work
Ill tell you what I like.. I like an effing overhead grab handle for the drivers side.. wtf is with these companies that dont include this?
1:32 here is the pricing with destination included! They start at 31k but 4wd and the crewcab are extra.
Good video. Nearly bought this truck. BTW you get in a 2023 4×4 atm for under 30k easy. Best value I think
Where
Good truck for pizza and liquor store delivery LOL.
Why is the turning radius so awful? Isn’t maneuverability one of the main reasons people buy midsize trucks over full-size?
@@timsilva1944 yup, towed a 2K trailer across the country, never below 15, and if I could keep it under 70, got in the 17s. 22 SV King 4X4
Way to sum it up. It's exactly what I want. Except the manual side view mirrors. It's like Nissan is daring me to be manly and they called my bluff.
3:11 I’m glad the S trim of the Frontier has Apple CarPlay I was about to ask if the S has CarPlay
Needs a headlight upgrade, wheel upgrade and a plastic bedliner. Why wouldn't a nine speed transmission downshift willingly?
I wish you could get these with an off-road package like Ford offers & get it with a rear locker & 4X4 like 3K more lol
Lease is ending on my 23 Frontier Pro4X and I’ll miss it. But the transmission is all over the place when decelerating and quality control is terrible, at least on mine. One of the least expensive options in this segment, but resale is reflective of that.
What issues have you had related to bad QC?
There’s a lot to like about my loaded P4X though, and I’ll miss it!
u get what u pay for is true 😊
Good truck, (except) the power steering probably worse I drove, if they had different power steering ratio or electric power steering. I would definitely buy this truck. Great around Towner, the V6 200k+ truck will actually last more than 10 years, yeah old school S.B.
Used? 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2019 are very good. Many ways better than the competition.
I love my 23 S model king cab
I’d really like to see wheel options as those shown are very stock.
I know an engineer at Nissan and he says he would buy any of their vehicles. He only drives one because it’s his company vehicle.
I want to love the Frontier as a value option but Nissan's commitment to longevity is questionable.
Best option for a cheap, durable new truck might still be a previous gen SR trim Taco. (If you can find one)
Totally agree. My 22' SR trim Tacoma won't be available anytime soon. Check back with me in around 30 years.
Nissan trucks have proven to be durable, don’t tar them with their sub par cars haha
Frontier hit 1 million miles. Google it
Hate to break it to nissan fanboys but nissan is being forced into a turbo 4. Go ask them yourselves. They are just behind the game like always. This new frontier is the same truck from 2019 except new body work
Best deal in rhe market
31K for a base?
nissan still has a smaller king cab and 6' box
Indeed, I'm happy it exists, I think it's down to just this and the new tacoma when it comes to offering a small cab long bed midsizer!
@@Realistick yes as ford super cab and gm no longer offers their extended cabs
The King Cab does at least still have access doors so it's useable. Toyota really dropped the ball on the 24' Extra Cab in that regard by removing the doors.
@@escheidlid still pick the taco over this
@@tinhinnh Oh me too. I was just trying to give credit where credit was due. I'll never stop bashing Toyota for removing the doors on the Access Cab. That was a very bad move. I'm so glad I got my Access Cab when I did.
Dont think I've ever seen manual mirrors without the adjustment knob, has this ever been a thing?
That used to be the way the first "aero" mirrors were designed 30 or so years ago. I haven't seen it done since though. I think it was a huge mistake for Nissan to do that in this day and age. Even my base SR Tacoma 4 cyl. 4x2 access cab came standard with power and heated mirrors.
I'm about to get this same specific truck ..$36,2500
I got an SV, because of base not having power mirrors
what is the difference from the S and SV?
wish they have a manual option
Great review! +1
I get the feeling they aren't gonna stay "cheap".
Looking at buying one, anyone know of the engines water pump is belt driven or chain?
I personally know 6 hardbody from the 80s that have went over 400k , I almost bought the new one in 2022 but they had dealer pac . So I got a tundra 4x4 for Msrp ❤
A reasonably priced V6 pickup? Who’d have thought it….?
A GDI engine is a poor choice. Port injection is cheaper and last longer then the scam that is gasoline direct injection. Carbon build up at 150k miles .... Come on man.
What ever happened to the Nissan that were made inexpence and made tough like the Datsun 620? Oh i know, when they changed the name "Nissan "and were made cheaper.
The 24 Renault Frontier
stop making my 17 4x4 frontier be a regret!
@@Realistick Seat position and seeing over the hood is my key focus.
Regardless of any trims, it's way cheaper than Tacoma. 😊
It's a better truck than Toyota at least they have a frame that will last. I bought one had a Toyota the Toyota want know where the nissan went they run a lot better and cost a lot less
I remember the old 'hardbody' Nissan pick ups from the 80's unfortunately they rusted if you splashed water on them 😂
Man that's giving me unpleasant flashbacks to my old tacoma
Why does every single truck reviewer claim to be 6'3"?
I put crank windows in my truck.
Why bother grabbing a small "Tacoma replacement" when the price for the Frontier is just as outrageous
For the same MSRP, you're getting the low output tacoma. Similarly equipped, the Frontier is cheaper and you can actually get them below sticker whereas the 24 Tacos are pretty hard to come by at the moment!
The base needs power mirror
Why do you paint your fingernails?
