One of the best for sure!! That's actually off Lost in the sound of separation tho!! I think Define The Great Line was mixed by CLA (could be wrong) and it's definitely my favorite album of theirs!

Hate to break it to you all, but when this was mixed the mixer used replacement drums. The LITSOS retrospective they did talked about it.

Always fascinating to listen to someone with a trained ear speak of all the technicalities of sound. I have no idea how you do this, if I made an album I think I would just tell the guy to make it sound like (insert well produced album)

I think the reason the cymbals sound so compressed is probably because of the bleed into the snare drum tbh. Correct me if I'm wrong but at the time I'm pretty sure some of the fancy tricks we use now to get rid of that stuff didn't exist so he probably just gated the snare and so since the snare is so slammed with compression, so are the cymbals since the snare is so loud in the mix. I don't have Saturn and so I just used a very simple stock pro tools gate and had to adjust the parameters so that the gate opened up in a way that matched the length and sustain of the cymbal hits so that it didn't sound choppy where you would never notice it. But I honestly think it's probably because of that, being the reason the cymbals also sound so compressed. Just a theory.
