    As far as the vocals go, the harsh vocals are Spencer Chamberlain, who just does vocals, and the clean singing is Aaron Gillespie, their drummer!

    • @PaulPeavler
      @PaulPeavler 3 года назад +26

      One thing to note is that Spencer does a lot more clean vocals especially in the later albums, including all of them on the album Disambiguation when Aaron left the band for a while. The last couple albums they’ve played a lot with mixing both of their clean vocals which has been fun. I think Tim (the guitarist) also does some vocals sometimes, but that may just be for layering during live sets.

    The call and response vocals between Aaron and Spencer were always a great selling point alongside the band's tendency to eschew traditional song structures. Lots of bands have multiple vocalists, but that level of interaction between them is much less typical.

I think sometimes artists write entire completed songs and in the studio the production sort of bloats with a lot of additional afterthought electronic stuff that wasn't really part of the writing process. With him being in the band, it definitely introduces his part at the writing process and allows them to more thoroughly flesh them out and make them an important and deliberate component.

He's not trained, no he's not referencing your favorite jazz licks, and yea he hits really fucking hard. but its sick, and you can't throw shade on the dudes hooks, not vocal hooks, drums hooks. Best drum hook writer of all time in my books, the first thing I remember about EVERY UO song is the drum part, and it always stands out to people. Those violent rim shots, wild hats, and really off beat accents create a super unique drummer that needs like, 10x the love.

    So cool to see you do this. Underoath's run of albums from define the great line to disambiguation is legendary and so influential to many bands that are out in the post hardcore/metalcore today. I find myself going back to them all the time because they sound so modern and representative of what's going on now. They also just released a great new album that is worth checking out, very good stuff that sounds even more modern and industrial in some moments

    I still listen to this band frequently, UnderOath has a very special place in my heart, their arrangements, their vocals, their lyrics(I'm not religious, but their writing is amazing). One of my favorites is their song "Its dangerous business walking out your front door"

    Tim on lead guitar used a violin bow for those long notes towards the end of the song.
    To this day idk how Aaron can drum that perfectly while singing like he does. Crazy

    Fun fact about define the great line. They used violin bows on their guitars for some of the more "ethereal" sounds you hear on some of the tracks.

    Haven’t listened to Underoath in quite a bit, but I knew every lyric and most instrumental bits as soon as it came on. These guys are in many of our bones. Especially for the time, they set the bar. I’m excited to go back and listen to their discography this week!
    Any thoughts on their newest album? Haven’t checked it out yet??

    The next album after this one was recorded with very little editing or production effects. To the point where doubled vocals were two singers and not pitch corrected as opposed to the typical two takes from the same singer with pitch correction. Vocal reverb effects from moving the singer to another room. Natural feedback from the guitarists sitting by their amps. Just really cool and unique. Emergency broadcast the end is near is a great song.
