Can you beat our record on SSL fusion Simon Says ?!? I got an SM57 on the line saying y'all can't
"Less is more" is not an original concept. I think people who have paid so much money for hundreds of plugins feel the need to use them everywhere without much thought. Most times I get an outside session with 7+ plugins on each track it almost always sounds better once I deactivate them all.
I find your tone to be quite smug. Actually listened to nothing you said.
ääähhm, it´s logic?!
Ohhh SSL, absolutely gorgeous,, love them all there exquisite 👌
Awesome content! As always! Question, guitar tone & different amps that get along with one another. I see your 101b & dual rec... do you like to layer them or would you layer more with just one amp to build. My 101b doesn't always layer well with other amps...curious your experience? Thx!!
2:50 later we are finally done pausing and restarting the intro 5,000 times lmao.
Why don't you show how it's actually done
THANK YOU. i actually learned something from this short
would love to have Colin with Sueco back on Nailthemix, Songs Drama Queen or Outta my Head
awesome video man
Correct me if I'm wrong but the channel strips don't have the dynamics section, correct? Do they have the filters?
It's how it always was! 😂 Many studios (re)bought the biggest old skool (now mostly obsolete) boards from the 50s / 60s / 70s one coulght find for peanuts, that they actually cost nowadays - extra only to charge more - because "that 100 feet long huge epic elite board with that delicate analogue feel" a.k.a. dull, muffy sound 😂 from the unknowing clients 😂 oftentimes those boards didn't even work besides the flashy lights, but all the core insides like circuits and capacitors were leaked, dusty, faulty and eaten away by rust and mold 😂 all for show!
Powerball exercising is great for avoiding wrist problems.
I'm not metalhead, more of that I'm electronic music DJ but I know this song since it was released. I've immediately bought this album and I LOVE IT (still have limited CD edition). And this track should be one of the iconic tracks on tracklist for Forza Horizon or Need for Speed. Stabbing the drama drives into the ground without mercy.
could you mix the two in one song? so some parts quad tracked and some of the technical parts dual? or is that gonna be bad
You can do whatever you want. Just be aware that the same tone might not work for both. Quad tracks sound louder and gainier, so you may want to tweak your tone to make it work.
I was in a studio with one of these, and the engineer was using the SSL as desk to hold his laptop😅. No lie. He used his mouse to mix on his computer screen. This board is absolutely useless nowadays. Unless you're recording a live band. I heard most engineers charge more per hour because the artists or band see that big board, and they think its doing something special 😅

As an owner of an Origin myself, I can say you can automate. Do like I do when I mix in it. Use the ssl sigma in insert on the low fader, at the end of the compressor or so if you insert something in it. Then use midi and the uf8 and write the automation in Pro Tools. It’s even easier for recall. Sigma has 16 channels either mono/stereo. I sometimes use the sigma for automation on the sends also. 🙌
"You know what I mean?" No! :)
"Oh it doesn't have automation - yes it does, you just automate in the box" LMAO thanks
Any comments on how the Origin 32 compares with the Neve Genesys Black G(32)? I can't decide...
This is me right now. Been so frustrated cuz I want to do this full time. I love this stuff even more than performance at times. Joel you’ve been one of the best instructors in the industry. Learned the most from you, George Lever, and Nolly
When you say mult are you sending the bass to the mixbus AND direct to stereo out?
None of this really solves the problems practically. If the faces don’t automate or control the DAW then there’s no point in having one bank of a daw controller in the middle section out of the way. It defeats the purpose of channel faders Also the recall isn’t just the faders but al the other settings also
Mixing before you have finished arranging your song is a huge mistake and waste of time.
How tf did you pack so much value in 30 seconds 😂
Do you sum bass tracks and process them together after the individual processing, or do you only process the high and low individually?
gnar
Thank you king… God bless you ❤
Some really clever guy made a good and affordable plug-in at JST that did this, can’t remember what his name was though.
BadAss!!
More vocal chains!
Joel can you do a video on dialing in tones from late 90s/early 2k nu metal/alt metal? Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, etc.
what's the difference of this compared to just using an internal sidechain.
More control.
I never even heard of top-down mixing until people started talking about it on RUclips. It makes a lot more sense to me to get your mix sounding like you want without Mix bus inserts. Another thing I don't understand is why people have a drums bus, that doesn't make any sense to me. I've got nine faders or something here on the drums. I don't see the point in the summing them to one channel before they go out to the tape. The drums bus also known as a sub mix is something you do when you don't have enough channels, not something you should do if you have everything close mic'd and on its own channel... Just saying
Rick Rubin is an overrated hack, but not because of anything he said in his interview. I’d much rather have a competent producer like Joel, any day.
excellent. pls do more songs
A lot of people sold the mixers because everyone else did I still have my mixer because it brings the music to life..
Chevelle is my favorite band! Has been since I first heard them. So fun to play!
One of the biggest trade offs in modern metal is the guitar. It has to be played and recorded differently because of such low tunings. No more bar chords, everything is single note and low gain with the mid range EQd to the sides so it leaves room for the vocals. You can hear the phasing the mid side processing does (which I hate) but there’s really no other way to do it until plug ins like track spacer or soothe get muuuuch more advanced.
The vocals are what interest me most. Obvi he’s an amazing singer but how they’re getting that much air, controlled lows and highs and even compression and limiting cervini is a genius. My guess is a shit load of vocal editing but I’d LOVE to know.
Love the reference of Appetite, that album was the first album i ever bought with my own money. It made me want to play guitar, so much so that i have the logo as a tattoo on my arm. I listened to that whole album pretty much daily for months. Still one of only a handful of albums that i can listen to front to back and never skip a song.
I agree 100 percent. I used to be one of the people that just used presets or copied the youtubers settings. Now within the last couple months i decided im going to learn to mix for real. Im a guitar player that got into mixing. Ive been going back now and learning fader balance, then once im feeling good on getting good fader mixes then ill move on to EQ, then compression. But im also learning the why of why you do something or why you shouldn't do something and the process of how it works and why.
Love the Mario 64 music in the background lol
it’s britney b 🥰
systemic of the devolution of humans in general. Getting equal parts more stupid and LAZY at a scary pace.
Amen to that. Had the same experience. One should really think about what to put on the mix bus and when to put it there. Working on the track by track level as hard as you can first brings better results every time. I think the problem is that many mixers are insecure at heart and want to feel good about what they are doing as fast as possible. The worst plug ins in my opinion are those simple "bettermakers" like God particle, Gullfoss, these all-in-one Mix Bus plug ins and everything with multiband processing.
Sounds great! Wish I could pull that off. I’d have a lot more songs out by now.
Thanks for a nice video. Just wondering how it would be to compare SSL 4KB to Origin, to check the SSL 4000 analog mojo ?
What are you using for I/O to the PC?
