  • Another in the Steve’s amateur ( A MATE U R ) garage series of videos, this time introducing his brothers Series 1 3.8 E-Type Jaguar FHC. The garage door mechanism had broken and we needed to move the car out of the garage to repair the door. What better time to film it. The car , once described as the most beautiful in the world by Enzo Ferrari, looks fantastic having had thousands of hours of labour in restoration. The walk around video shows the original steering wheel and rebuilt 3.8 engine details, triple SU carburettors, the body was previously chemical dipped and stripped. Tony had owned an E Type before and enjoyed driving it across Europe but not before replacing & improved parts had been fitted. The series 1 bonnet looks very long by today’s standards, the IRS has been rebuilt and new exhaust fitted. We would think again before restoring as the dilemma is always, is it worth saving? Having watched old Top Gear- Jaguar E-Type the restoration project was undertaken. The FHC is not as desirable as the E Type roadster but they are more valuable. Ultimately we did manage to fix the up and over door. Ultimately it was lovely to hear the big cat roar into life again.

Wow......a beauty! That Mk1 fixed head coupé was the prettiest of all the E-type incarnations.

Wonderful jaguar. Absolutely beautiful. An extremely early one too. Your brother has great taste. I prefer the 3.8 and 4.2 coupes and not the later V12's although they are easier to drive. My father used to take me to school in his 4.2. How lucky was I!!

Yes indeed, we must both consider ourselves fortunate to have experienced that feeling.

Hi Steve, an wonderful early and very original e-type. I‘am going on in the moment on a restauration of an early hadertank and aswell i change a Brand new hadertank, made out of brass, to a stile, looking similar to the originals with the weldet flange around.
    Regards, Dieter

The most obvious non original feature is the metal dash. These were superseded in mid 63 (sept?). Prob fitted when converted to RHD?

Lovely car but a lot of after market parts on it.
Was it profesionaly checked for originality.
Rear under panel no creases that I could see.
    Maybe just camera angle.
Hope he not pay to much if not original as one thinks.

      Hi Steve,
Many thanks for your comment, it is my brothers car so I have not asked how much he payed for it. The body has been restored at some stage so you could well be correct about the under panel and yes I believe he did have it checked before buying it.
      Regards
      Steve

Very smart looking car, S1 coupe is the best E type design. Front near side tyre looks a bit flat !

I think Tony is going to need an engine rebuild. It smokes more than my Grandfather used to.

That’s can be normal given the choke is on and it’s a very cold morning ….. BUT on the other hand the tappets sound a bit noisy …. Also Maybe a compression test would be a good check to see if those rings are ok … if not then it’s pull down time …

very interested in the car cover for the Etype. Where did your brother get it. Keep up the good work Steve.

      Hi,
The cover is a Carcoon, it is manufactured in Manchester, England by the Carcoon Company.
They are a fantastic small company and the cover works well at preventing condensation and keeping the car clean while in storage.
