- Restoring Lesney Matchbox No. 24A & 24B Weatherill Hydraulic Excavators, in the Matchbox range from 1956 until 1967 with the upscaled B arriving in 1959.
For my latest early Matchbox duo of identical but upscaled castings, I take on the 24A & B Weatherill Hydraulic Excavators. The smaller of the two was introduced in 1956 with its lug-mounter shovel, metal wheels and silver trim. Its larger replacement turned up in 1959 and had a more secure shovel fixed in place with an axle pin. The wheels were now grey and later black plastic, and the silver trim was no more. So similar were the two models that they both used identical 'Weatherill Hydraulic' decals on the rear.
My 24A was rather obviously missing its shovel, which is handily reproduced. It needed that, some replacement decals and a general tidy up. The 24B was donated to me by long-time channel member Tony who presented me with a green re-painted mess of a model. The wheels had been painted black but the decal had been skirted around, missing any of the lumpy overpaint.
Weatherill Hydraulic were not the manufacturers of the real vehicle, rather the manufacturers of the shovel and hydraulic rams. Often they would utilise a Fordson Major tractor. The company was formed in the late 1940s in North London and would see some success with their front loader in the 50s and 60s. They struggled to compete with foreign manufacturers during the 70s and by the mid-80s, the company was no more.

Great restoration, brother.
Thank you!
Nice restorations, details and paint jobs 👌 👍
Thanks you!
Another silk purse Jason, great job.
Thank you Tony, and thanks once again for providing the green repainted one to me! Made for a good comparison between A and B. Shame this video hasn’t had anywhere near as much traction as most of my other videos but unfortunately that seems to always be the case with construction or agricultural Matchbox models. Ah well, it’s another 2 off the list on the way to the full regular wheels 1-75 series target!
Great job 👍🏻
Thank you!
@@DieCastRestos you're welcome 😊
fab resto xxx
Thank you!
looking nicely shiny again, both of them. :) funky, I never realized there was an actual tractor hiding underneath the extra parts...
shame for them decals. if you have the means do them yourself, I'd say, but leave those two as they are now for future comparison.
It’s an interesting bit of history I didn’t know either until doing some research for the voiceover. It’s easy to assume these manufacturers made the entire vehicle
Another great restoration is always there Jason keep up the good work have a good one and God bless
Thank you, you too
They both look great! I would leave the decal since you paid for it and I think it looks fine. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks John. It’s a pity the quality wasn’t there. Some of these reproductions are so hit and miss. I bought them at a time where I didn’t really have the capability to produce my own. I’d design them myself without hesitation these days
