Make way for the modern Stone Age family as they make the jump from animated favorites to live-action heroes! There's trouble brewing in Bedrock: a test mix-up has made Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) a vice president at Slate & Company, and now an evil executive (Kyle MacLachlan) and his sinister secretary (Halle Berry) are plotting to use Fred as the fall guy in an embezzlement scheme. Luckily for Fred, his best friend Barney Rubble (Rick Moranis), wife Wilma (Elizabeth Perkins) and her best friend Betty (Rosie O'Donnell) always have the big guy’s back in this yabba-dabba-doo of an adventure! Elizabeth Taylor co-stars in the “Steven Spielrock” production filled with dino-sized special effects and classic Flintstones humor.

Goodman really didn't want to do the film, but Spielberg announced during a table read for the film Always (which Goodman also did) that he had found his Fred. There's no doubt Goodman was always the choice - Goodman even said that if he turned down the role they wouldn't have made the film. Sadly I wish the script had been better - and the director was not particularly a good one (you see credits like Beethoven, Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet?)

John Goodman was the perfect cast for Fred Flintstone, the movie might not be a masterpiece but it's one of the best live action adaptations of an animation franchise I've watched, I loved it when I was little and I still do.

It helped that Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, the original creators of the show, were highly involved with the film, serving as executive producers, and even making cameo appearances in the film itself.

Mel Blanc got credit for the voice of Dino even though he passed away five years earlier. The dialogue is taken directly from The Flintstones TV show.
Besides no could replace the original voice of Dino. Think about it.

We can all agree both Fred Flintstones and Barney Rubble were well perfect to be play by both, John Goodman and Rick Moranis.
It's so sad that he didn't want to do a sequel, but you can understand his reasons. As he had said that he didn't want to be forever known as Fred Flintstone.
Too bad, I will always remember him as Fred Flintstone. 🤗

I absolutely love this movie. I was born in 2001 but my mom would play flintstones cartoons on the dvd player all the time. As a kid I thought the movie set looked so cool! It’s very impressive a franchise from the 60’s can give so much pleasure nowadays!

Technically, Warner Bros. still owns the rights to the characters due to Hanna-Barbera being a key role in making this. But Universal definitely does this film justice.

Fun fact about the production, specifically the animatronics.
Stan Winston was originally hired to do the designs of all the prehistoric creatures, and his designs were a bit on the realistic side. And Brian Levant wasn’t happy with the designs, so he was let go of his services and eventually he brought in Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to do the effects after watching Dinosaurs with his family, and the rest is history.
John Candy was also considered for the part of Fred Flintstone, unfortunately he passed away at the time.

It was nice that they included Mel Blanc's voice for Dino in the movie almost as a tribute....A well deserved one too.
I can’t wait until I have kids and get to show them the movies I watched growing up. Getting to see their eyes light up getting to see these.

@jeshuahcreations154 thanks to this movie I think there should be a live action Jetsons. (The reason I think there should be a live action Jetsons is because both The Jetsons and The Flintstones did a crossover movie called The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones)
Indeed, the original was way better than the awful Viva Rock Vegas prequel. John did a fantastic job portraying Fred.

Man this movie was best Live action ever!
The fact that we live in a universe that got to see John Goodman play Fred Flintstone will forever keep me humble. We were blessed. Why we didn't get to see him play in this role more is a shame, but at least we got this. A movie where everyone was having so much fun playing characters they grew up with. The charm at which he said "I also bought a new bowling ball" is PURE Fred Flintstone. I doubt we'll ever get a adaptation this perfect ever again.

This movie's best casting choice was John Goodman to play Fred Flintstone.
The week the movie was released in theaters, I was out of school due to chicken pox. That Friday, my mother went up to my school and brought home every homework assignment I missed that week. I spent the whole weekend doing that homework and almost didn't get to see this movie on Memorial Day.

Man I don't know how many times I watched this movie as a kid, but I know its more than the digits on my body. This was a fun movie!

My lord the animatronics are insane. Just look at the garbage pig's face while Fred is shoving his fist down its throat. You can tell how much this poor thing is trying to convulse Fred's fist out of its stomach. That's insane. So much work and detail for a few seconds of screen time. That's insane.

And even though this is the movie, not the cartoon, I would still say this is the best Flintstone episode I’ve ever seen, and I also liked it when the Jetsons met the Flintstones losing my two favourite episodes of Flintstones have been a part of

This is so far and by far the best movie I've watched this year. Because I think they respected every aspect of the cartoon and gave wonderful actors and actresses a chance to play as the characters from the cartoon
I definitely still enjoy this movie today.
The trailer for this movie was on the Jurassic Park VHS, and because I for some reason never fast-forwarded past the trailers, this film and Jurassic Park are essentially linked in my mind. I think of one, I think of the other XD
My favourite parts of VHS tapes were the trailers which played beforehand. I’d never fast forward through, even if I had the VHS of the film was playing.
