Coming back to this music so many years later, the two things that strike me are how much taste and groove goes into Bill Ward's drumming, and how crystal clear and accurate Ozzy's voice is. Is it possible that they're actually UNDERrated for their musicality?
I remember watching this on TV with my two brothers. Don Kirchners Rock concert performance. We were all teenagers and huge Sabbath fans since the first album. First time actually seeing them live. We were in Sabbath heaven, man! Went on to see them in concert many times over the years with Ozzy, then Dio. Still my favorite band to this day. I'm in my 60s now, and I'm actually wearing a Sabbath Vol 4 t-shirt right now.
The Sabs were always brilliant live. I was lucky enough to see Sabbath when they reformed and played their hometown of Birmingham in the 90’s. They were stunning live and Tony’s bone crunching riffs just go through you. The crowd became so excited and insane, they ripped all the chairs out of the arena and threw them all over the place! Unforgettable experience.
This footage is gold! At 6:00 Ozzy is laughing because he got the lyrics wrong. He sang the final verse of the song. "Kiss the world with winter flowers" is the last verse of the song. Even so, everyone adapted and continued the show as if nothing had happened. Legends!
@@mr.brenman2132 Ozzy was notorious for getting the words wrong live, even early in their career, 69/70. everything you'd hear would be a line from the song, just in a pretty much random order
I would just like to thank Mike Gammon (?) for all these Sabbath requests, a true Black Sabbath fan ! 🤘 It is nice to see something other than the 1970 Paris footage. Great to see the guys smiling too. Geezer getting some coverage with his flaming fingers on the bass. Good stuff.
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was a great show for us up and coming musicians and those that just appreciated great music. No pitch correction, Geezer killing the bass, Bill killing the drums, Tony and Ozzy were doing their thing. So good. Got to see them in '78 with Van Halen.
Fantastic, Andrew! This was a real pleasure to watch! As always you got everything right. A couple of other points about this vs. the 1970 version: 1) This one includes some crowd interaction shots; and 2) Geezer is included, whereas in the 1970 Paris version you never see him at all.
It's crazy how Black Sabbath is seen as the first heavy metal band, but they had bluesy elements jazzy elements just solid rock and roll elements, you even hear some like Calypso reggae in there, doomie, thrashy, punky, Black Sabbath is like everything, they're all forms of music they don't have a genre
Luv the clip!!. Bill bringing those sticks back that far...Brilliant❤... Bill tells a story when he was very small, 5 or 6, that Marching bands would pass his house, the streets were narrow in industrial England...so when you got close to the gate..they were only maybe 2 metres away from you. He says he never forgets feeling of the sound impact on his body as the big bass drum was struck, and his earsdrums ripped by the snares and shocked by the cymbal clashes. When he was a bit older, 10-13 I think, his Mum and Dad would do band sing alongs at the local pub, Mum was a good vocalist.... Dad played the piano I think. Sometimes the drummer was too pissed to take his kit home in the car and would leave it in the spare room at the Ward household as it was close by ( knowing that would probably have a play session in the week). I can still see Bill waking up early in the morning, seeing that kit for the first time, his finger touching the resting stick on the snare and a sunray of light hitting that connection...like David's finger touching the finger of God! Lol! So ever since he played drums... he always wanted to emulate the power he felt on that day as a young boy.
I remember watching this episode of Kirshners Rock Concert. The same episode also had Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. 🤘 Now unfortunately comes the part where I do old man bragging. I saw them in 75, 76, and 78! Kicked Ass! 🤘
Ozzy is a quintessential metal head. He not only sings, he really enjoys himself while he does it. Listening to Sabbath live is more than just listening to them perform the songs, it’s also hearing Ozzy getting the audience pumped up. His interaction is as important to the experience as the musicianship. When Ozzy says clap your hands or stand up, you clap your hands and stand up. Their 1998 reunion album is a great example of Ozzy’s live audience interaction.
I was just like Mike, 17 years old at the time. When I saw in the TV Guide that Sabbath was going to be on Kirschner's Rick Concert I felt my heart stop and couldn't wait for the day to come. My first time ever seeing them live.
The odd lyrics from the live 1970 version of, "War Pigs," are the partial, but original lyrics called, "Walpurgis." The lyrics were changed to War Pigs because the record company found the original lyrics too disturbing.
This is my favorite Bill Ward song, there is something about his groove here. I wish you would have explored the beats he brought to this song a bit deeper. Maybe the studio version would give you a clearer listen.
