- 👉It's time for ANOTHER Android based handheld and in this video, we will go in-depth and check out the @PimaxVR Portal a unique Android based hybrid handheld with future VR support and Nintendo Switch joycon like controller attachments. Powered by the Snapdragon XR2, the same found in the Oculus Quest 2, the Portal should end up being one of the most powerful traditional Android based handhelds on the market. There will be a lot to cover from an unboxing, teardown, battery testing, Android gaming, and Playstation 2, PSP, Gamecube, Wii, and Switch emulation. This should be a great primer and get you familiar with the Pimax Portal.

Is the D-Pad a deal breaker, what are your thoughts?
Yeah... pretty much, and now that it appears the Odin 2 has the SD 8 Gen 2! Umm.... yeah.... when's the next show!?
Really dig you opening it up so we can see the internals, lots of tech packed in there! And appreciate the benchmarks, but this is a pass for me.
Great review, buddy! ^_^
The dpad is annoying but I don't think the dpad alone makes or breaks a system. I really like the versatility of the Pimax. Especially once the vr and xl screen come out. I think overall this has a lot to offer!
There's some really impressive engineering going on here for sure!
@GoatV8 Yes, I'm really excited to try out the VR portion. 👀I think that could really take the Portal to the next level!
The D-Pad isn't a Deal Breaker but it's definitely -1 for the Pimax Portal.
I love this handheld and i love your review. I think it's probably the best review ive seen about this console only without the VR side of things. I first saw it like 2 months ago and i watched it again because i just order me the black LCD one last night. I really look forward to using it dedicated instead of partly using my phone. Biggest thing is that i really want that attachment for DS and portrait android games but i dont have a 3d printer 😢
Of all the new takes on android tablets, this is the most interesting although pricey. I'm a fan of VR so will keep an eye on them to see what they do. The tate mode is a killer idea and Pimax should make an official accessory to capitalize.
I completely agree! I told them directly when I was on the Q&A Livestream that it should be an official accessory.
Wow. That vertical pinball mode was cool. Never knew that was a thing!
Yea, I love playing pinball games in that orientation! 🔥
Glad you found some positives about the Pimax! Love the TATE Mode attachment.
I always love me some tate gaming. 👀
I needed something to do this morning, thanks!
Haha, thanks Joey! 🙏

Dysmantle is another phenomenal game on this device!! But thanks for your other recommendations!! Some of them I haven't even heard of!!💙🤌🏻
Thanks buddy. Another great review 😃
Yay! Thank you 🤗
very well thought out design proposition
Hoping they can tie everything else they have planned together!
Great video!
Thank you, much appreciated! 🙏
This handheld is truely amazing and the next step in android
Brilliant video my friend. M A G N E T S ❤ 🎉
Can it run run Witcher 3 and Diablo 2 resurection via switch or windows emulator ?
Is the camera any good?
What is the camera capable of?
When will the vr headset be released? This christmas, next christmas or never?
Excellent detailed review as always Rob! Despite the funky D-Pad, I really, really love the look of the Portal. I'm kind of tempted to get one myself. My wife and I often play single-player games on switch with one JoyCon each, and I think it'd be great to do so on emulated games AND streamed PC games using the Portal game pads. Darn I'm really tempted after this...
Wait how'd you get the Portal to float at the beginning
Thank you so much, Shem! I'm always excited when you're in my comments section. 🤗 I just love the crazy things I can do with a device like this, including that freaking awesome tate attachment!

Thank you for the detailed video. You nailed just about everything about the pimax portal. I am however appalled you got 9 hours of battery life playing a lite SNES game. I cannot even get 4 hours just playing a video from an sd card. Can you please share your settings in detail. I would like to try exactly what you did to see if I have a faulty unit.
It's very possible that playing video is more taxing than very light emulation. I used the energy saving mode for Yoshi's Island with 50% brightness/volume.
So is this out yet and available for public purchase? I attempted to buy the 549$ QLED model but it keeps saying my EU Vat number is incorrect. But i live in the US. Is this region locked or only available by invite?
Can you connect these joycons to a Switch?
pimax should make an official tate mode cradle
💯💯Haha, I told them during our Q&A livestream we had with them that they should've made this an official accessory. Such a missed opportunity, would've cost them nothing to make!
I literally want this to pair with my Shadow PC Power Pro account🤣🤦🏻♂️
I love the panda aesthetic. Its a shame we cant get the QLED screen with it.
I caved in and purchased this version, can't wait 'til it gets here!
Let us know how you like it!
Just received my unit! Great handheld so far.
My only concern is Vulkan crashing on Aethersx2.
There's certain games that render textures properly with Vulkan as opposed to OpenGL.
Have you had any success in running any games with Vulkan and no crashes?
Also, does this model not have LED lights in its thumbsticks?
I love all the competition in the handheld space, and this thing is really cool and feature packed minus the d-pad! lol. However, as someone who travels a lot, in my personal humble opinion, the Razer Edge 5G is the best in performance, power and most importantly to me, portability. Ever since I got it, my steam deck had been getting a lot less use. It requires way to much tinkering under the hood to do anything right and it still may not work properly. I also love my Logitech G-Cloud which in a lot of cases, is a much better experience in my humble opinion when paired with Geforce now Ultimate and Xbox Game Pass compared to the Steam Deck. That being said, I am still really curious about the Pimax Portal. It's really slick and seems really versatile. I definitely paying attention to any news on it. Great video by the way!
Do a review video or a comparison video or something..? 👀
I need to go back to my Pimax Portal. I want to try Winulator and Console Launcher on my Pimax Portal.
How are you enjoying it?
@@retrotechdad Good Stuff so far. I only use it for Higher-End Gaming.
the fact it has android in it makes me kinda excited, i hope soon someone figures out how to make MetaOS available for the pimax, i'd love to try some Meta Quest games on the pimax
My main problem with this hand held is that you pay a high price for features that most people will never use and that it also lacks where it shoud matter like battery life and a true D-pad.Really,take away the 4k screen and all those cameras, add a bigger battery (at least 5000 mah) and a good D-pad and this would have been solid at $300
Very valid points!
It so happens that Pimax has now announced a "retro" version of the Portal that strips away the 4k screen, cameras, and removes the detachable controllers for $299. Unfortunately, the 4000mAh battery and d-pad still remain. So close 😭
this is more of a gimmick i like the versatility but for the people like us an odin or a aya neo pocket go. Also the odin should have an 8 gen two.
Anyone knows if the Portal comes with built-in GPS? Pokemon Go is kinda dumb for this device, but there are more and more proper Android games coming out that include a IRL GPS component :/
It does not, unfortunately. 😭
That is unfortunate :(
Thank you for the info!
The only good quality of the Pimax Portal for me are the magnetic controllers. I hope Redmagic adapts it soon.
The magnetic controllers are such a great idea!
Another bangerrrr
🔥🔥🔥Thank you, I appreciate it!
Awwwwwwwwe yeah! Right on, Rob! Let's watch! ^_^
Let's do this! 💪💪
Bought this and returned it the same day. Its small, way smaller in hand than it looks, this makes the device hard to grip or use for those with larger hands (like myself and most westeners). The 4K screen might be great for future VR use but it makes text really hard to see in games at the normal handheld distance (somewhat negated if you can lower the res or output to a tv...). A lot of reviewers note the teardrop d-pad and face buttons as being a poor design choice for catching fingers... can confirm this and it is noticeable during normal gameplay. So I sent mine back for a refund. For a kid or someone with small hands and really good eyes... it might be worth it. But adults should avoid unless you really like the... maybe upcoming accessories.
…but…but…but…the ayn odin 2 supposed to be the best android 2024…and i bought it and waiting eagerly…well…well well…
Adreno 650 is very very old. Same as in Samsung galaxy s20. Combine that with only android 10 = no future.
