The old trick of asking them for their unit will never fail. Every veteran has it laser engraved into their memory. The WW2 vets at the dementia care home I would volunteer at could barely remember who they were, and they knew their numbers.
Akash Ahuja and I’m planning to join the Military as well and I’m planning to join the same branch as you and I chose Special Warfare for the Navy and I picked Seal as my NIC for the Navy
Important to remember that wearing camo is not automatically stolen valor. It's only stolen valor if you try to use the uniform for personal reward, or benefit.
my dad gave me some boots he got in his Air Force days and I’m always concerned some dude is gonna call me out for stolen valor cuz I wear them untied and to top it off, One of my veteran friends always busts my balls and yells it at me when I wear em lol
Used to wear my dad's old boonie from The Gulf war. He also gave me an extra pair of multicam pants from his work as law enforcement. Wear the pants all the time, but the hat is small on me.
Correct. I always buy surplus gear for hiking/camping (No unit patches/insignia). The stuff is readily available to the general public so is not illegal to wear. I could dress head to toe in a uniform, and as long as I don't make any service claims or wear any patches or ribbons, I'm technically not doing anything illegal
I'm a veteran and unless someone is trying to run a scam, I'm not worried about it. I'm more concerned about the self appointed stolen valor cops who think they know so much.
My dad told me a story about when he worked at the VA back in the 1950s. An old guy was brought in that was a "Spanish-American War" vet. The VA looked through all their military files and could find no record of him serving in any branch of the military (no computers back then), so they confronted him about it. He said that maybe the reason why they couldn't find his records was because he had fought on the Spanish side!
I was a navy hospital corpsman in the 80's. I had a veteran I cared for who was a cabin boy on Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet. He was 16 at the time. Yes, he was pretty old in 1983.

How can you not feel sorry for people that want to be fake attention seeking freaks that even get ought faking it. Also it's extremely childish to automatically be claiming everyone that served the military is basically a hero.
Believe it or not that's kinda true in the army half the time your not even doing your MOS your just doing whatever they want you to do or wherever they need you at some people have MOSes that require them to do almost nothing

Seven times we loaded then unloaded then reloaded those things. Killed most of the day doing that.
I live in a “military town” right next to a huge army post. I’m always asked if I’m military at every store and restaurant and I always say no. I grew up on that military post because of the efforts of my father who was awarded a bronze star. I would never try to steal the thunder I didn’t earn. I’m proud of my own accomplishments but it’s taboo to claim something you’re not. His flag is with me and that’s enough for me. I couldn’t imagine putting on his uniform and parading around town in it. That’s distasteful and I know dad wouldn’t approve.
Its a uniform in which many soldiers raped, and killed innocents while wearing. Sorry kid, but the uniform itself is meaningless, as theres been a lot of good and bad done while wearing it. This whole nonsense about not wearing some uniform goes to show how pathetic and sheeplike some people are. Use your brains lol
Back then it was common for people who didn't speak good english and who were of asian decent to fight for us so it's not to crazy to think that he was just a old guy out of it who really served and just never learned english or got legal so he couldn't get his card.

It is only stolen Valor when they are asked, if they were in the military, then questioned by someone with real experience in regards to that branch of service in which these idiots are claiming to have served. AND then not having the slightest bit of accuracy in regards to their places of service and jobs they did. THAT is stolen valor.
I served in US Army from 2003 to 2014. Honestly I don't see a problem people wearing military surplus camo or ACU pants, or even a jacket, as long it doesn't have any patches, chevrons or ranks. I mean, I do wear my ACU's time to time, when I do work in the yard or something. It's comfortable. I just don't understand why they lie about being in the service.
This makes me feel ill. My father in law (he was in the Navy) had his service medals lost or stolen before he died (he had dementia) and it pains me to think someone stole them to sell them or potentially use them to commit this kinda crime. Thankyou to everyone who served you guys gave an amazing sacrifice for your family, ours and for your country bless you. And for those lying about it shame on you!

As dumb and stupid as it is for people to dress like they serve when they really don't, it's not a crime. We do, after all, live in the USA and anyone can dress like anything. People can dress like the president and it's not called stolen presidency. Military servicemen hear the term 'stolen valor' and automatically assume it's for anyone dressing like they serve. Stolen valor is a good term military/congress created to label this type of crime, which just applies to people trying to reap benefits that do not belong to them by pretending to be military.
Some of the people trying to catch stolen valor like to forget that it's only a crime to claim military service if it's to scam the VA (or any government office) out of money or to claim that you earned certain awards. Wearing cammo, however, is not a crime.
Christopher Satterfield You’re so right. But running off at the mouth about, for instance, being an 0211 jarhead then claiming that’s a reconnaissance MOS is just wrong. (Recon Marines’ MOS is 0321)
Christopher Satterfield a lot of state laws cover it too tho. It’s kinda like false pretenses charges if u try to use fake vet status or uniform to get any benefit
It gets me that they so often ask for that VA card. I don't have one. I never went to the VA for any reason. So no, I don't have one. I do have a DD 214. I don't carry it around though. I mean honestly, who does. If a person asked me for my MOS, I couldn't possibly answer that. I didn't have an MOS, I had an AFSC. A while ago, a veteran accused my highschool friend of stolen valor. My friend was in JROTC and he happened to be wearing the uniform while going grocery shopping after school. My friend told the veteran multiple times he was a JROTC cadet in highschool. The veteran was so enraged that he ignored everything my friend said. Safe to say my friend didn't rejoin JROTC the following semester.
Well Americans seem to be very passionate about an occupation. I know people who’ve fought on their own soil against their own people in Northern Ireland. Americans treat them like saviours but they’re dickheads, I don’t understand it.
Was your friend following the regulations of the uniform because? I know from the time, when i first started JROTC a c/sgt maj was caught with diamond stund earrings in his ear while. In ASU’S walking home, and a sgt first class stop him accused him for stolen valor.
Cleo Fierro i was simply talking about how the Americans view our soldiers. At the time they weren’t in uniform because you would be murdered for that here. I’m just saying that these people joined up, killed their own people in the same country that they were from, went home and the Americans treat them like they’re great people. I’m not talking about all soldiers, I was simply telling a story about how Americans love someone, when they only know one thing about them. Again, I respect individual soldiers, but I would never treat them like the Americans do when I only know one thing about them.

Yeah you're not wrong. I saw a video someone was saying stolen valor to guy wearing a camo backpack. They are handed out at surplus stores and he didn't claim anything. Idk why people jump to conclusions so quickly
You are CORRECT. They guy is showing his support no different than some one wearing a John Deere t-shirt, etc. Unless he said something, or his conduct was such as to imply he is/was a member of the military, leave him alone. I've already expressed my feelings about the self appointed Valor Cops who confront people. 1 day, they're going to confront the wrong one, and may regret it. I have nothing left which even remotely looks like a complete uniform. I do wear my mini skill qual badges (2) on the lapel of my suit. If any Valor Cop was to challenge me, they'd wish they hadn't. @Thecarkid 11 do you know what stolen valor actually is? lol... stealing valor literally makes zero sense. In America, we don't incarcerate people for your sensibilities. Not defending these posers by the way, but you can't tell people it's a federal offense when it's not.
They’re all normal people just wanting a discount or attention , if you ever actually serve in the military you’d know the feeling of not even really wanting to wear the uniform
Yes one is a FEDERAL OFFENSE, and people die in it. If idiots wanna dress up and play soldier they need get it through their head that it’s ILLEGAL to impersonate military personnel and that out service members have died wearing those uniforms.
Because the idiot questioning his service never once stated U.S. Navy. He also told that idiot that the jacket was donated to him. I can see why he doesn't like America.
i think the guy recording was a fake cop. unless he just doesn’t pay attention to supreme court case law. which is also likely. people shouldn’t get their legal info from youtube.
@Bobby Sands There was clearly a language barrier. He asked if he was in the Navy and he responded with yes. Then when asked about the uniform, he said it was donated. Try putting the captions on. Also, the United States isn't the only country with a Navy. I have seen first-hand the Navy of Iran, Canada, and Mexico just to name a few.
I just realized at 1:48 in the video the guy is from the South Vietnamese Army and it doesn't count as stolen valor so basically this person whoever filming him is discriminating a Vietnamese person who served in either the North Vietnam War South Vietnamese Army he's literally recording him and trying to prove to everyone that he's fake

As a veteran, if I see someone wearing a jacked up uniform I do not assume stolen valor. These new vets are running around asking for a CAC card. That *hit didn't exist when most of us served. This is America if you ask someone a service related question and the answer is not proper chill the fugg out.If the uniform is out dated who cares. Stolen valor is to me when the posers are trying to get benefits from the VA or civilian organizations that help vets. So to new vets from a vet that served before most of you were born and who suffered loss also. Stop running up on people. It shows a lack of discipline and respect for the people you serve.

I think they just like the attention they get from people on the street. People coming by, and saying thank you for your service. I had to laugh at the ignorance in the line “when you get out of the military, you can’t wear the uniform anymore.” I earned my uniform with my own blood. I earned it with injury, with sweat, with tears and with friends torn to ribbons and lost to me forever. I’ll wear any part of it that I choose and god have mercy on the person who disrespects my right to do so.
I heard others say that before. I think when people wear the uniform, others think their still active and it’s kinda misleading. That’s why it best not to wear it but I know people do still cause they wanna prove something or are proud of themselves or country..
It's obvious some of these people have a mental illness, some are supporters and some like to cosplay. Stolen valour is an outdated concept, it's a free country you can dress whatever the hell you want. Unless these guys are complete nutcases and carry firearms it's best to leave them alone. There is still a code assigned, called NEC not MOS which identifies your Rating in the personnel records/system. I was a corpsman in the 80's. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for a few years, running a preventive medicine clinic. A guy I went to high school with was telling me he was a marine corps major. The problem is, he didn't know what a corpsman was. For those who don't know, the marines don't have medics like the army does. Navy corpsman (male corpsman) serve in that roll and are assigned to marine units and deploy overseas with them. If they're good, the marines don't consider them navy anymore. If the guy I went to high school really was a major on the marines, he'd have known what a corpsman was. By the way... Semper Fi.
Kimberlain O'Driscoll I never understood why the Corps didn't have it's own "medics" until I researched it on line. Apparently all Marines are Combat Marines & Navy and other Corpsmen are considered Non Combat, only allowed a weapon to protect their patient (s). I guess it's also tradition?
@@baronedipiemonte3990 I think much of it is tradition. Fleet marine corpsman (those who serve with the marine units) are trained in small arms and combat tactics. Corpsman will give their lives to save a marine and vice versa. I'll be honest, corpsman who serve with marine units see themselves as elite. If a corpsman enters a bar with navy guys on one side and marines on another, a corpsman will usually sit with the marines and be most welcome. It's a very special relationship. Even today, when a marine hears that I'm a corpsman, I always get a heartfelt "Semper Fi" (unless I say it first) and he will not allow me to buy my own drinks. It's a relationship I love. I'm active with my American Legion post so I'm always around marines. My challenge coin reflects the time I served with them. It has navy corpsman markings on one side and marine markings on the other.

They have the right for self expression under the Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Speech Act. They have rights under US law. Furthermore people can film anyone in public domain, but if the person says stop filming them, then you have to stop as you are violating their rights.... the right not to get filmed is an absolute right unless they are deemed news worthy by a news reporting agency, or they are a public figure or are breaking the law. Law enforcement have the right to film, so do PI's. You can even film people as long as you don't broadcast them without their permission. One can sue for using their image, voice and likeness. Instead of pretending to be a soldier, how about you do something for veterans in a civilian capacity? Go volunteer at your local VA hospital, help out with your local VFW or American Legion Fundraiser, donate to the DAV or even assist them if there's an office nearby or at the very least: show some goddamn human decency and respect to a real veteran when you meet one. Talk to them like a human being first off. If you encounter one in a restaurant or a bar and you feel strongly enough about THEIR service? Buy them a drink or offer to pay for their meal even if you want. But for the love of god, dont steal their thunder

Important to remember that wearing camo is not automatically stolen valor. It's only stolen valor if you try to use the uniform for personal reward, or benefit.
Or if you claim to be in a military unit. But yeah, I wear full camo sometimes when I ruck, hike, backpack or airsoft

Sometimes the camera operators need to know the difference between confronting some idiots from bullying people.
Some people get there honor by harassing old people wearing military surplus. What type of Valor or Honor do they get from that. That is just bullying.
I honestly feel really bad for a few of these guys cause they got something wrong with them. It’s wrong, it’s totally wrong. But these guys still need to be prayed for. God bless you guys who actually served.

God isn't real. Prayer does nothing.
Great comment!
Not when they scam the public in the name of the actual U.S. veterans.

I was a marine in the Air Force. I loved my job being in the army. I was the pilot of a jet fighter. I spent all my time in that submarine. I served in Vietnam during a patrol of Korea. It's obvious some of these people have a mental illness, some are supporters and some like to cosplay. Stolen valour is an outdated concept, it's a free country you can dress whatever the hell you want. Unless these guys are complete nutcases and carry firearms it's best to leave them alone. The military has fought for the freedoms of the country, these people are exercising their right to wear whatever they want as long as they not harming anybody.
Important to remember that most enlisted Navy Sailors are not familiar with MOS, specialties in the Navy is more known as Rating (It is called Rate if specialty is associated with a rank).
There is still a code assigned, called NEC not MOS which identifies your Rating in the personnel records/system. Such as 3365 (Machinist Mate, Nuclear, Submarine, Supervisor) while the rate is such as MM3 (Petty Officer 3rd Class) so it is more appropriate to ask Navy what their rate is/was. MMCM(SS) USN (Ret)
HM1 vet here. I understand MOS, but I was prior service National Guard before I joined the Navy. I still wouldn't remember or know all the other Army stuff. I also got out in 2006, and so much Navy stuff has changed. I might not be up to date.
Fun fact: Not all veterans have a VA card
I never got one and I got out in 2017. Don't care too much to

Interesting to learn a new thing, I served in the Dutch marines and we have our own medics we are called combat life savers, but on the other hand we do not have a armoured division in the marines only light mechanized.
niedersacksen US Marines are actually getting rid of their heavy armor and aviation, to serve a more orthodox Marine roll

Beware of them getting yourself arrested for harassment. Please read the US Constitution and all the laws. The Stolen Valor Act is very specific.
In the film business we have to be very careful of all this and we have to get release letters signed. When we are filming down a street we need to comply with the city ordnance and make the passerby's aware of being caught on film.

“I wore this Army uniform because I need to do laundry.”
That actually makes somewhat sense. I have had to wear military clothes several times because my other clothes was in the washing machine. But not a full uniform off course, just a jacket or pants. Can't go outside naked.
I never served in the military myself and i sincerely regret that. But while there are times I've felt a sense of insecurity or more appropriately, a sense of guilt for not enlisting, I never once in my life considered the idea of dressing up like a real soldier and parading myself around. The mere notion of that is disgusting and there's not even a word strong enough for the level of disrespect to do something like that.
