Old guitars are one of those things that can only be fully appreciated if you see them in person. I tech at a shop that has a 57 Strat and that thing is crazy.

To me it's kind of a double-edged sword. Yes they are beautiful guitars to look at like fine art,but they are musical instruments that at the time of their manufacture,it was assumed they would be played. Now they're in a collection to be mostly looked at and probably hopefully investments later on. I'm older and remember when the "vintage addiction" was just beginning around the later 70's. At the time, you could get 50's 60's Fenders,Gibson's, Gretsch's cheap because they were just "used guitars". I bought a mint condition Gretsch bass for $20. A friend of mine bought a mint 50's cream white guard tele for$150. I liked my 69 tele better because it had the 3 way switch-I paid $200. Now with the collector's market the prices are crazy. You can't play them because you don't want to put any scratches your "investment".
@@alexdenton6586 I didn't 'say' he did. I merely stated my WISH. Are you new here? Have you not seen his incredible collection? btw .. How do you know what he did or did not acquire from that collection, were you present?
@@216trixie I don't think they were on loan. I think he went for a private/appointment viewing of that exquisite collection .. because, he's a qualified potential buyer. What he bought or not is truly not known by the general public .. yet. He's full of surprises.
Trogly, Have you ever thought of taking your show on the road? Going around and visiting all the local guitar shops. Then, taking your favorite guitars and tearing them down ang giving us a playing sample.
Not really my style - I prefer buying and having them in my own controlled space where I know the audio is good. Doesn't mean I don't occasionally do it on rare occasions though - usually has to tie in with something else I'm already doing to make sense for me
Guitar no.7 (1942 hollow) i think the rod for the Neck pickup is to adjust its position. You can move it near or far away from the neck. Thats how i see it. Regards.
Wow! All of these are AMAZING! As a visual, I'd date that Crest from the early 1960s. It just has that vibe. Man, that SG - so beautiful, I'd be afraid to touch it. Same with that Firebird. Unreal!! Thanks for posting this!!
Correction 1963 Les Paul! Man that Les Paul SG with the sideways Trem is one beautiful guitar! I also liked the Super 400 as well. Some beautiful vintage classics that's for sure!
2:00 Brazillian RW-top LP (Yeti) is cool, and the Tobacco Sunburst on just the horns of that Crest does look interesting … 9:35 The back and reverse-headstock on that Custom is pretty nuts, lol They all look fun to try/play … 😊
Holy bleepin' vintage guitars ! Every one of those is uh-mazing ! I love the big jazz boxes , the dark cherry SG with side vibrola , the Non-reverse Firebird -7 ( Damn !!! ), and the Crest ( the wood on that is like an exotic bird ! ) , and Ive never seent an ES-320 before , so weird & cool ! ... Great episode !! Thanks Trogly !
Custom shop edition, maybe they made a few of these because it might be hard to order that fancy quilted maple for just one guitar. Or the guy wanted two.
For the 60s SG the way that the top coat over the flower pot if chipped it looks like a witch on a broom. I suspect you're acquiring a guitar for review from Gary's. That arm on that Super 400 looks like some kind of after market string bender. Was a guy selling an old acoustic electric his grandfather had. It was needing some TLC but I was confident I was likely going to only restore what was necessary for it to playwell. Only problem was I kept missing him when I tried to contact him. I finally got fed up and bought my Casino. No it isn't the same as the much older hollow body which looked much like a 400 if one was made by Epiphone. I enjoy the. Casino but really would've love an old jazzy blues machine.
I would love to see you check out Diablo guitars in Seattle. They have so many sweet guitars. Gibson, Fender, Esp, BC Richs, Jackson's. Definitely a cool appointment only shop!
Don't tell me you left empty-handed? You definitely should have bought a guitar or 3 while you were there. He definitely has a great selection of guitars.
Gary Josef was a recording artist. I’ve never heard of him but he must have been someone important because when the factory was closing he convinced Gibson to custom make their very last Citation especially for him. Thus his name plate. Perhaps he’s the Gary whose collection you’re reviewing? Thank you Google.
I don't know why it bothers me, but every time you say "3-piece" in reference to one of those neck, I immediately think, "no, that's 3-PLY, not 3-PIECE." It comes down the fact that these days, a lot of far east manufacturers are using 3 pieces in their tilt-back-headstock necks: a scarf joined headstock, the main neck, and an extra block for the heel. And they refer to these necks as "3-piece" necks. So, to avoid confusion, I think it makes sense to refer to the necks using 3 or more lengthwise pieces as "3-ply" necks (or 5-ply, or whatever). It makes a difference when discussing the Gibson Marauder, for example. Some examples have 2-piece maple necks (scarf joined headstock) while others have 3-ply maple necks (three longitudinal lengths). Also, I'm shockingly pedantic (obviously).
very cool video. i'm still trying to figure out the LP double cut Specials and the neck pickup position. why on this vintage one is the pickup so close to the neck where as other ones seem to have the neck pickup more towards the middle?
The Citation is enormously good looking. The other one always interest me is the blonde 335 with those single coil pickups, looks suoer cool, but I think those pickups arent very good.

The cool thing on that dearmond pickup is i would say you can move it on the rod to the place you like. Pretty neat
Super 400 is sweet, never seen one in person.
Great video! The quilting on the Gary Josey guitar was so extreme I had a hard time focusing on it when you turned it around. Simply stunning.
The super 400 is VERY art deco looking.
Wow, I am blown away, so many cool guitars, the aging is truly sweet.
Gary always has such choice guitars. I've drooled over many of his guitars on Reverb
LOVE the aging of the inlays on that '63 SG. You just can't fake that stuff.
All neat guitars but the arch tops wow!
Whoever dies with the most guitars wins!!! 🎸🎸🎸
The Crest looks like a coffee table 😅
Wow
Man, I wish I had unlimited 'guitar' funds to buy my 'dream' guitars all day, everyday.
To be fair it sounds like these guitars are on loan for this episode

That is a hell of a collection of guitars he has. there's some really cool instruments he has there. definitely unique for sure.
I looked at his website before I watched the video. I knew you would start with that beautiful Les paul
Gary's had the same stock in his "store" 20+ years.
I got my ‘54 Southern Jumbo from Gary. I couldn’t be happier.
Very nice! Love my J-185 custom for the beauty and detail as well. Over the top! Gibson can do amazing work...

Wow, some beautiful stuff!
Thank you for finally including links to your other videos once again.
Gary’s collection is a glimpse of the beautiful guitars that they in those times.
Thanks Gary's Classic Guitars! Wow that's some great vintage Gibson gear. All gorgeous but the Citation was something else.

They’re all over-the-top beauties, but I *really* like the Firebird. Wow!
Austin, you beat me to it...making a trip next month from Florida
I have a pristine '71 ES-320 that's been a favorite since I bought it in 1987.
That first guitar is beautiful! 😍 I love the rosewood binding too.
That SG has been played in A LOOOOT of smoky bars.
Stunning my friend, stunning. Great job Trog!
A visit to Cincinnati!

That first guitar is a beauty. Actually they all are but that first one is different and kinda special.
Your Crest was a really fine guitar, played like a million bucks. Thanks for letting me play it! The last guitar is on my list,,,,,

I ordered a trogily's guitar store shirt. I watch every night. It's the least i could do.
Thanks Trogly and Gary, for sharing.
Be interesting to know the value. Or going price.
Cool episode, nice change!
Love The Les Paul, but not the price!
Double cut Les Paul Special - Oooh.
Awesome segment! Did Gary a solid:) and vice versa.
Have you ever reviewed a John Birch Custom? Big in the UK in the 709's and 80's.
You Tease!!
Very cool! Thanks Trogly!
More archtop please ❤🎉
Wow man, pretty incredible all these right there lol....
If you ever find a Gibson guitar with painted on F Holes i would like to see it.
Those are beautiful!!
Ooh some nice pieces!
Can’t believe Gibson have employees in on Boxing Day 😲😲😲😲
In the USA Boxing Day isn't a holiday.

Best business trip ever.
Have bought a bunch of guitars from Japan. All of them reeked of cigarette smoke.
When is the Gibson Junior DC walnut review?
When it arrives!
Nice Super 400.

Hello from Alaska.
My birthday is December 26th!
Lol, I'm a whole sixteen days older than that The Les Paul.
new mic?
This one is for sale ??
All of these guitars are stock at Gary’s Classic Guitars LLC online and on reverb

Guitars that need to be handled with white gloves are bull shit. Absolute joke. Quit being ridiculous 👎
I wore gloves out of respect for his inventory - it was not a requirement.
