📚Description: A viewer of the show traded me this "mystery" Les Paul that has a serial number dating it to 1980 where as EVERYTHING about it screams 1990. I think it is a re-neck

14:24 Trogly…are you nuts?! Does that look like an 11 year old girl? That’s a woman in her 20s at least.
Back in the 80s people matured early due to hormones used in the beef….
Took marks chatter a poor q.c is the Gibson s.o.p
I've been wondering why they don't do the serial numbers in a simple, straight forward way? Like year, day of year, guitar produced that day. Why do you have to be a code breaker to read the damn things?
Kudos for nerds.
Be too easy to fudge serial numbers. They know how many and what they made that day. Gives them an extra layer of security to tell real ones from fakes.
And they’ve always done a shitty job placing them and stamping them evenly. Gibsons are trash in pretty much every way possible to me. They can’t even put a serial number on any of their guitars that looks professionally done.
The headstock logo is different on the guitar than the photo, guitar in the photo has the correct ‘90’s logo
Agreed
Because it was re necked..
If that serial number was correct, the neck was stamped one day before my first birthday. If it was 241st of '79, due to 1980 being a leap year, it would be my birthday guitar.
So damn close, I'll find it one day
if you pause at 18:17 it clearly looks like the serial number starts with a 9. Maybe the mystery is just the finish turning the 9 into an 8.
That's the other guitar with Gibson tuners. The 'problematic' one is with Grovers, and definitely starts with 8.
Yes - I saw that too!! I think the its a poorly stamped 9 and the finish and clear coat made it look like an 8 instead!!
Definitely a 9
Clearly a 9
No it is a 9 not an 8
Kudos on playing licks from the second half of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"!
For sure! I was sitting for 15 minutes trying to remember what that riff was. Then it hit me. Not a riff you hear often
Yeah, I think you are spot on about the re-neck on that guitar, everything just points there
Hit the bridge with a rubber mallet? How about lightly notch with an appropriate file.
Not sure what you want to achieve.
I did this when I replaced the bridge on my SG but I put a sponge on the bridges and hit rather lightly. The benefit of this method is that you can align the strings correctly and have the marks on the bridges in the right place. You can then file it the way you want the notches to be. Doesn't do any damage if you're careful.
I'm not sure Mr. T. I've watched enough of your Gibson videos to know that with special editions, workshop guitars, etc., that color can tend to be inconsistent over time.
Hey Trogly! Every time my sales rep from Sweetwater calls, I tell them to keep sponsoring you. I hope it helps.
To me this is like a perfect player grade Les Paul
agree so doesn't really matter i guess....looks good nice wood on the fretboard..
My goodness - those look like brush strokes around the switch !
The serial looks like the first number is a slightly double stamped 9, not an 8. Being old enough to remember the 90s. I'm 99% sure the sticker was Tweety Bird.
I think you're 100% right!
My sister's husband had a similar one, almost black on the back and blue with gold-plated parts. And with the corresponding serial number. And it was bought new from a Swedish music store sometime in the 90s...
Would there be a small batch?
2:42 This is why I like Trogly. He truly loves the guitars. The parts he mentioned belonged somewhere, and he made sure they got where they’re supposed to be. Not just for the owner, but for the guitar. To make sure it’s how it was meant to be. Plus he’s walking Gibson encyclopedia.
The blue with gold hardware is so pretty :)
So she's eleven years old in those pictures?
🤣
I noticed that. Perhaps she had Gibson age her?
Early bloomer 😂
THANK YOU!
Better not be or Trogs is in deep shit.
At least 35.
I dig that Gibson has manufactured a solid-blue LP. Looking back, I associate a different finish, the blueberry burst on an Epiphone LP owned by a friend of mine who tragically passed away at age 25 in January 2006.
I am nothing of the expert that most people on here are, but my experience with the green tint under plastics is from sweat. I gigged in AZ in the early 90s quite a lot and anything that was near metal and didn't get the MASSIVE amounts of sweat wiped-off corroded and turned green.
I used to get green stains on my hands from sweat.
SUPER curious to know about he chick who owned this.
Maybe also based on the location of that black electrical tape and the non-matching color of the strap button on the upper bout? The headstock breaks that I have seen occur from the upper strap button popping out are ones which might warrant a neck replacement. Maybe that's what happened?
I don't know if you can see the woodgrain of the Neck in that old picture. Perhaps you can compare to the neck thats on it now?
Its definitely an old "War Horse".
The sticker looks like Maggie Simpson
My feeling is they found an old neck lying around near the end of the special color run, and decided to re-Gibson-logo it with current tech and put it out.
I agree with one of the commenters about the serial number being that it just aged it made the shape of the eight instead of a nine possibly it’s a good theory anyway that poor Guitars is hammered, but that’s a good thing that means it’s loved and was worth playing I would consider buying that
Better get the magnifier out Trogly! Both in room light and under black light seems to show some marking by the first part of the SN, with the "8241" more indented and a bit out of alignment with the rest of the SN. It's close but not exact as it would be if stamped all at once. I wonder if its the important part of the serial number that's been altered between the refinish, and not the whole neck. For everyone saying it's a 9, do a 1080p screen capture and zoom in and you'll see it's an 8 but it's a bit smudgy like it's been changed.
That's not sufficient. Get a CT scan.
There’s one guy on Reverb Selling his ‘01 Standard for $4,900. Originally he listed it at $19,000, no joke (as Brandon would say). Anyway, he said it was from the “good wood” era and every bit as special as actual ’59.
It’s probably more accurate to say there’s one guy NOT selling his guitar on reverb :).
Maybe his wife is making him sell it and he convinced her it’s way more valuable than it is and he listed it high so it wouldn’t sell but he is still a dutiful husband….
Complete bs er. Fools rush in.
Speaking about a mystery. Did you have a red widow les paul?
Weird, they spelled colour correctly
Canadian too!
Canadian too!
Sounded great.
I thought near the beginning when you were passing from pickup area to controls, that I could see separation in the top layer of clear. Almost like flaking in a line from the bridge pickup down past the VOL knobs just forward of them?
The custom color LP in purple or whatever they called that color, answered a question that had been on my mind for a while. A number of years ago a guy brought one of them to my home for testing some fear I had for sale. I don’t know if it had the stock pups, but it was the best sounding LP I ever heard. Regardless of year model, vintage, played by a famous artist or not. I wish that I had asked him about the pups in that guitar.
Love that hat tip to “Can’t you hear me knockin “. Nice touch!
Got you a Parts-Paul!
Thumbs up!
Austin! in 14:17 when you show the second old photo you can barely see that the Gibson logo is not the same! the one in the picture it is clearly a 80s style one
To me, it doesn't look like a re-fret despite the excess glue. Maybe the replacement neck was from the Gibson's shelf of previously rejected excess necks?
hey Austin!!! I have the translucent black version (or mocha, as some call it)...bought it at the house of guitars in Rochester, NY in 2000...it was "new old stock" that had been sitting in the store for 10 years...I replaced the tuners and threw a Duncan distortion in the bridge...its a great guitar along with my 1996 limited edition gold top...cheers all!!!
Are you sure its not a Murphy labs R90 lol
Since the 1st and last digits of the serial stamper are the most likely to get accidentally bumped, I'd say this error has occurred multiple times at the factory. Pretty rare to see for sure!
A decent player grade LP.
I ended up with the White 90 custom you had on the show. Had a light pink staining from the case and a mark from a guitar stand.
Hey,Trogly did you check the date codes of the pots?Cheers!
An oxblood 2006 les Paul custom bought brand new in the USA with long tenon and at least 3 pieces neck (maybe 5) said to be a regular les Paul custom by Gibson according to its serial: what is this?
Have you ever done a deep dive into the Howard Roberts Fusion? I have a 1990’s black one. It’s an awesome guitar.
There are 1989 les paul standards with the modern logo. I own one that doesn't have the dot above the "i" I think Gibson mixed both logos for a few years there.
The wide binding in the cutaway..I thought that was gone way before the 90’s…it’s a pretty decent player example
I think the stamp jumped and caused and echo so to speak. It actually looks like a 9 at certain angles.
" Return to form " in the '90's with plastics that warp and lacquer that cracks and peels 😂
My 2019 sg special is fading and is starting to get cracked lacquer.
It's awesome
Not 100% but I think the headstock logo in the photo is the 70/80s style. The G looks a bit more curved and the O looks covered over! Could be wrong but worth another look!
Has major James Gang tones.
Nice. The bridge p/u was my favorite and the neck was great too. The middle was a let down in comparison. Good show!
That neck pickup has some mojo, sounds fantastic!
If that a veneer on the headstock? I wonder if there was a donor guitar from 1980 and it was just a very good replacement job.
Nah, he would have spotted it when he was looking for a scarf joint from another headstock being grafted on.
@@flapjack413 The headstock face can either be a holly wood veneer painted black that’s glued on or just black paint over the mahogany. Those veneers are available in various places.
cool guitar, but the gold hardware I hate. It is so easy to damage and it looks Crap after a few plays. Uggg I hate it. Cool guitar tho
Colour is how you spell color in English everywhere else but merica
Yeah I had a chuckle when he mispronounced the correct spelling of Colour 😂
The white custom from your collection scream my name😂😂❤❤❤. Good wood years and the blue one is a keeper finders
Would be cool to see a neck through fender jaguar with right handed reverse body/wings like an actual firebird an a sorta firebird like pickguard but made to fit the contour of the horn like the bird an have fenders starcaster headstock
I suppose if I ever send my custom fender back in for a new neck on a count of it's worn out frets I'd get one with a serial number of my birthday to replace the original.
Hey trogly!! I would really recommend checking out the fender jim root v4 jazzmaster!
Super comfy to play, 12“ neck radius with binding and block inlays! Might be interesting since you dont have a ton of work at the moment😎
Trogly in the house!!!!
Compelling video. 👍 I feel like I just witnessed an Endeavour autopsy!
Austin is truly THE Guitar Archeologist.
The sticker was tweety bird
Hmmm, black and blue ball ends on those strings... Who makes those? I've never seen those colors on a set before.
Dean Markley blue steel
18:17: I dunno man, that definitely looks like a 9 at that time. See how the bottom half is kind squashed down compared to the top? I know it doesn't look like that in the black light segment, but it also doesn't look like the last two 8s at that point either... kinda lopsided...
18:17 is his actual 9xxx being shown for reference.
4:33 Are those brushstrokes in the clear coat? Or is merely a change from that black tape?
I told you not to buy that standard.
that rosewood is gorgeous
hey, if you don't want it, I'll have it 😂
Yay the 90's, my era of Gibsons. Most of my Gibsons are 90's models.
You should open up a black Epiphone les Paul custom from the 90s….
Why???? I'm really wondering.
I'm wondering why?????
@@WoodandWire-t1m lol because i have one an i want to know how it looks inside from a @trog vid
Seeing an American company spell colours right is wild
Man, it would be cool if you could find or if you have one review it… 2007 Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom Silverburst GOTW #16! Awesome videos as always!
Based on the thumbnail and the ugly logo, I thought it was going to be a video about a fake Gibson with a sticker for a neck logo.
It’s like watching a forensics crime show . 😊
So your are basically saying it‘s not authentic enough😂! Still love that finish. It’s exquisite.
That blue looks great with the transparent finish. Probably my favorite of the 6.
Really? You don’t like the ‘Drab Baby Poo’ colored one … ?! 🤷🏻♂️
@@kierenmoore3236 I can’t say I do 😂
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar “Weird” … 😉 (that’s the word of the month, right?! 😊)
Or they over sprayed the serial number and tried to reproduce them?
I don't know but that guitar sounds a bit dead to me.
the one is beat to crap the one with the blue back is sweet
Man, such a beauty of a guitar! That blue even if it was a respray its still gorgeous. Whoever buys that guitar is gonna enjoy it. Ive been playing guitar for 6 years and ive been following your videos since then Trogly and ive always loved your unboxing and review videos! Hopefully someday i can get my hands on a gibson like that beautiful les paul!
Rock on Trogly!
Sounds fantastic, Trog! Congrats!
This one sounded really good to me.
beautiful!
Colour is the correct way to spell it 😉
Weird that they used the British spelling of “colour”. Was there a British connection?
Scratches lacquered and new neck. My guess.
slap a robo-tuning module on it
When did "Standard" first appear on the truss rod cover?
1976 when they brought it back.
@@StringTension Thanks!
I don't see it listed in the shop...
That clean tone is juicy!
Colours is pronounced the same as colors, for anybody who didn’t get what I am hoping was a joke…
Colours is the "British English" version of Colors.
Why?
@@WoodandWire-t1m Comes from the Old French via Latin into English. American English simplified the spelling by removing the U.
Saying colours incorrectly because it's spelled correctly is very...er.....
........ deliberate.
@@georgeoh-well8116 ah, yes…
Chibson 100%
how come you only show up on my feed when something is wrong?
another great video!
Congrats on 300k subs Trogly!
The finish looks like 💩 !
Z is for 15 hours late.
Beautiful
Yeah, nice early 90s pups (490r 498t). I quite like the Red Custom. Thanks for spelling “colours” correctly for once, America! 😉 I mean, I couldn’t care less, really … which means what it says … as opposed to saying the literal opposite of what I mean (“I could care less”), like you guys do!! … 😊 (I mean, how did that come about?! lol). Still love you crazy bastards, tho’!! 🇺🇸❤️😊
Looks cool
