This was so simple, clean, and concise to follow even two years after the initial release date. The only video I've found so far that could help me with a timer. I love this! Thank you so much for this EXCELLENT tutorial, subbing immediately!!!
After struggling with timer plugins etc. I found this tutorial. Works like a charm. I hope the OBS team will give us more options though, like formatting etc.

Thanks brother. I do my best. I've created a tiny corner in the RUclips space. I slowly grow... The snow ball effects has not started yet. I've been posting for over two years. I will not stop.
Thank you, I had created the timer countdown weeks ago using this video, the thing that got me was getting rid of the extra zeros. smh just had to look up what the option key was for a windows keyboard. Got it done and looks great thanks!
Thank you! Super helpful! I am just starting to stream my live-stream fitness classes since gyms are closed and I LOVE using OBS and creating creative user experiences for my classes!
Scott, thank you so very much for everything in this video! I had been using a third-party app for my stream starting countdown timer and it was very undwieldy. I had NO IDEA that OBS Studio had a built-in Lua script for a countdown! I would never in a thousand years have thought to look at that menu and explore that option. Also, I had configured sounds to play with each scene transition, but I never knew how to make it so that I could hear them when they happen. I always had to watch the replay of the stream to hear them. So you killed two birds with one giant stone for me with this video. Thanks again!

So you get an like from me for the video - its long but this little information are helpfull thx. And the rest i think is selfdescription .
Not sure if you're still making content. But your videos have helped a lot. I'm a Very new OBS user. And have been watching MANY video for one specific thing and I feel like it should be earlier but I don't know how. All I'm looking for is a Countdown that activates a source (video clip) within the same scene when it reaches zero. I'd that even a thing? If so. Is there a video you can direct me to? Thank you. And thank you for your content. 🙏
If you put a host camera (video capture device) in the scene at the bottom and set the video countdown to "show nothing when video ends" plus "do not loop" the countdown will go right to host camera. NOW is there a way for the host to see a countdown to when the video is going to end through his monitor? So I have directed this countdown scene to play in his monitor but I don't want it to be live. This way he will know he is live.
Good tutorial. I found it is easy to alter the script to only show MM:SS. Here are some instructions on how to edit the script. I hope this helps you and maybe someone else. Open up the scripts just as in the video. Tools -> Scripts -> press "+" look at the top of the dialog box and it will tell you the path to the scripts. In my case it was "C:\Program Files\obs-studio\data\obs-plugins\frontend-tools\scripts". Using explorer go to that path and find the Countdown.lua. Make a copy of it and name it something memorable, I suggest "countdownHHMM.lua". Now that we have a copy of the script open it in a text editor. I use notepad++ but any text editor will work. Look for this line: local text = string.format("%02d:%02d:%02d", hours, minutes, seconds) This is the code that tells the script how to format the text. We only want to see minutes and seconds so change it to: local text = string.format("%02d:%02d", minutes, seconds) Remember this will not display the hours so when you are specifying a number of minutes make sure you are not going over 59. If you specify over 59 you will see 00:59 until you get to less than 60. You could alter the script to have a max value but that is more work than I was willing to explain in a YT comment. Ok I lied, To change it to seconds alter these lines: old: total_seconds = obs.obs_data_get_int(settings, "duration") * 60 new: total_seconds = obs.obs_data_get_int(settings, "duration") old: obs.obs_properties_add_int(props, "duration", "Duration (minutes)", 1, 100000, 1) new: obs.obs_properties_add_int(props, "duration", "Seconds max < 3599", 1, 3599, 1) This will give you a max timer of 59min 59sec. change the both of the 3599 to a bigger number if you need more than 1 hour. But remember if you removed the hour digits like I did (previous change) then you will not be able to see the hours. I found I needed seconds rather than min and I never need hours.

Hello Scot
Is it possible to add the count down timer with live video as a background
Thanks
YES... What's got you confused about it?
Look for this line:
local text = string.format("%02d:%02d:%02d", hours, minutes, seconds)
This is the code that tells the script how to format the text.
We only want to see minutes and seconds so change it to:
local text = string.format("%02d:%02d", minutes, seconds)
Remember this will not display the hours so when you are specifying a number of minutes make sure you are not going over 59. If you specify over 59 you will see 00:59 until you get to less than 60. You could alter the script to have a max value but that is more work than I was willing to explain in a YT comment.
Ok I lied, To change it to seconds alter these lines:
old: total_seconds = obs.obs_data_get_int(settings, "duration") * 60
new: total_seconds = obs.obs_data_get_int(settings, "duration")
old: obs.obs_properties_add_int(props, "duration", "Duration (minutes)", 1, 100000, 1)
new: obs.obs_properties_add_int(props, "duration", "Seconds max < 3599", 1, 3599, 1)
This will give you a max timer of 59min 59sec. change the both of the 3599 to a bigger number if you need more than 1 hour. But remember if you removed the hour digits like I did (previous change) then you will not be able to see the hours. I found I needed seconds rather than min and I never need hours.
OK! This message just got pasted in my "To Do" list. Dude, there's some good ones in there let me tell ya. This one is gonna jam. Thanks man.
