If there was one thing the UK had in common with the Soviet Union, it was drawing the worst borders imaginable

Except the UK's issue is that it didn't create enough autonomous republics or borders based on cultural lines. They just merged a shit ton of different cultures and ethnicities into one and expected them to work together without British rule.

Latvian here, I can confirm. There are many people who lived here for 30+ years and only speak Russian. On paper, Latvian is the only official language here, but many people avoid it by any means possible.
Sometimes in Riga I get approached by people who are looking for directions, and they immediately start speaking Russian, without even asking if I can speak Russian lol. That's how bad it is, they feel like kings and want the natives to adapt. When you are looking for apartments to rent online, many offers are in Russian and the landlords can't even speak Latvian, and the same goes for buying used cars. But pointing out this social issue is kind of a taboo here, you simply can't talk about it or else you are seen as literally Hitler.
However, the countryside is mostly Latvian, especially the countryside on the western part of the country. Besides, the real estate is a cheaper there and the nature is nice. But the argument "why don't you just move there" doesn't work because there aren't many workplaces or opportunities.

Almost resembling a internment if you scuint and tilt your head. Funny how this isn't talked about more, but I always bring it up in border conversations when I can.
This goes as well to Chinese nationals and Chinese people entering the southern border illegally, which is not talked about often enough.
Obviously this is totally fair and the same restrictions put on russians should probably go to self-indentified communists.

I am going to add the fact that Russians in Latvia that don't speak Latvian have 2 groups. The first one is trying to change the situation and are attempting to learn the language. And the other group are biggest assholes in the universe, praise ruZkiji mir and don't want to go to Russia. Sadly, The assholes outnumber descent people 3 to 1. One day I was on a bus, coming back from Riga. There was one Russian couple behind me that were talking about the Language exams. They failed it and now are getting deported. The guy just lost his shit and started to praise Sad Vlad and used racial slurs. In the middle of his temper tantrum he got a email, he was getting drafted in to the Russian army. Don't ask me how, because I don't know. He turned from ZOV guy to "noooo, i dont want to go to ruzzia, they genocial regeime" in 5 seconds.

What remains true is that the origins and hardships of all Eastern Europe have developed them into being a similar culture and a largely cohesive people - despite the pan-European propensity to ignore mountainous similarities shared by European nations and focus on comparatively tiny cultural differences. Very educational and entertaining, keep doing your thing and providing me a window into whatever the fuck is happening in the brains of East Euros.

Ah yes, the latvian case reminds me the Moldova's case too. They've been doing that there since the empire times (1812) and look at the results: there are generations of people who have been living there entire lives without actually learning romanian, because: why would they. They are never interested in developing as people (their brains do not comprehend the fact that knowing multiple languages is simply beneficial for you). That is what russian mind is. That is indeed ethnic cleansing and a process of colonization (oh try explaining to russians they have been colonizing as well as the western colonizers, their brain will blow out and they will angrily reject that)

Because of the language the transplabted people also don't see themselves as either Moldavian/Romanian or Latvian or w/e country they are in. • @georgeoldsterd8994

Agreed, except that it's not just the Russians who don't want to learn the language of the country the settle in. The British didn't care for the locals languages of the countries\ lands they colonized, nor did the French, or any other imperialist nation. A lot of Americans don't care to learn any language other than English (and they don't care to learn English properly either, for that matter). It's got to do with imperialist mentality rather than stupidity. Something like "I'm a part of the people that made the greatest\ biggest\ strongest country in the world, why should I lower myself to the level of these barbarian peasants? My culture is great, they should elevate themselves to my level! (except they'll never be like me, because they're dirty savages)"
