the one thing I was interested in was not covered, ie how the cabins and their tracking mechanisms cross over the interlocking rings .

@@sim.ulationkoyoIt is cool, but the double rings tamper with the views of the city. So to see it all, you would have to get in both wheels.
with a monument of this size, they could design the most basic track switching rails which could be manual, and still get away with it. though it looks like a complex problem, enginerring wise, it's not a complex problem. they have plenty of space to manage this well.

Yeah but that would add extra stress on the superstructure and likely make it cost prohibitive or just too robust to really look the part.

Yeah, spokes would make it look derivative. I think it should be diamond shaped. That would be distinctive as nobody I know of has a square ferris wheel.

If you think of "modern, big city, ferris wheel, landmark", you don't think of the Eye in Vegas or Dubai as much as you do as the London Eye.

I am so happy that my favorite channel deals with my city!!
I enjoyed watching it because it not just showed the project, but also dealt with historical and ethical contacts.
I should add that there is another reason why this project has been dealt with again recently.
As Seoul is a city of 10 million people, a huge amount of garbage has been produced and it has been dumped in a landfill in the nearby city of Incheon.
The problem is that the contract for the landfill is running out, and Seoul needs a new facility to handle the wastes, which it plans to build in Mapo-gu, Seoul.
The area was once the site of Seoul's landfill, where there was a huge mountain of garbage.
The waste mountain is now turned into a park, but there is still a working waste disposal facility.
The government wants to build a new waste disposal facility here, but residents of the area are very much opposed to the sacrifice, and the government is offering to build a landmark in the area as compensation.
That is the landmark project in the video.
In my opinion, the landmark will never be built because the residents will never allow a dump to be built in the area.
That's not a ferris wheel, that's just a slow-moving vertical circular roller coaster with enclosed cars.

Namsan tower is more iconic. Although not unique.

i think it was worse than that. he took one dubious, but obvious comedy track by Psy, and equated that to all of modern Korean music - a seriously bad take.
Seoul already has Namsan and Lotte towers. Very iconic actually
It's disappointing to see the Seoul Twin Eye project facing accusations of plagiarism. The original Seoul Ring design by Lee Eunseok and O’pus Architects was innovative. The Seoul government should acknowledge the original designers' work and handle this situation more fairly. Respecting intellectual property is important for encouraging creativity and integrity in architecture.
I am the original inventor of the circle, and i want my money.
Lotte Tower was the first thing that came to my mind when you mentioned Seoul. 🤷♂The 63 Building is another contender.
I never thought or imagined one of Seoul project would feature on B1M channel!! Seoul is improving every night and day and have areas to improve definitely!!
Let's make this city a unique landmark by building something all the other cities are building.
Even if they build that, people wouldnt even recognize that is in Korea. When they talk about the most famous Ferris Wheel, most would immediately point to London Eye.
@@Tabula_Rasa1That is the wrong way around. Go back to the start of the video. When asked what pops up in your head when you think of a city, it is the landmark. It isn't asking you to think of a city with a type of landmark. Because the latter would mean all the towers and skyscrapers are meaningless since Burj khalifa will easily take the title nowadays.
But no, when we think of London, people think of the Big Ben or London Bridge, not the London Eye.
@@neurofiedyamato8763 Some cities have multiple landmark like London, NYC or Beijing. All I am saying is even if this Korean Ferris wheel is built, people will still recognize the London Eye as the most popular ferris wheel. Having a ferris wheel or any structure does not mean it will become worldly recognizable. It takes time, love or hate from the people. For example, most people will not recognize that huge Chinese spokeless ferris wheel mentioned in the video eventhought it is bigger than the London Eye and possibly more impressive.

but it wasnt the original, londons was and thats where that type of landmark popularized so Orlandos didnt catch on as its landmark.
That sped-up explanation was perfect. Just fast enough to require full focus and summarised well. I wish more channels would do this for key background delivery.

I find the SMG's desire to cement an "icon" for Seoul weird because, as a native Korean (who has since migrated overseas), I always thought Namsan Tower (now called N-Seoul Tower) was already the icon of Seoul, with the new modern icon being the Lotte World Tower.
Exactly what I was thinking too like when they said Seoul doesn’t have an icon I thought of Namsan and Lotte world tower as well as gyrongbpkgung palace.
Yeah was a strange angle for him to take if i'm honest, felt a bit weird.
@@armsid Probably not as iconic from the Westerner's POV.. many people don't think Korea and think of any towers unless you dive into the culture a little bit more.

It’s absurd to hear Seoul’s explanation that the idea came from the mayor. I would just hire the original designer and collaborate, rather than going through all this controversy.
Leaders often want to leave behind a legacy. Making claim it was their idea is one way to do so.

Every time the Ferris Wheel is mention, it always brings me back to the inventor George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. died a poor man even though his invention is used all over the world.

I wouldn't say that Seoul doesn't have any big Landmarks. Sure it might not have something as worldwide famous as some other cities but when I think of Seoul I easily think of Namsan Tower and that is very much seen to be a landmark for the city and often the thing depicted in any skyline photo or artwork.

I don’t understand what removing the spokes achieves? They also have the advantage of being able to be used as led displays and like in London, can have fireworks launched from.

But is this a Ferris wheel? For me a Ferris wheel is cabins with a 360 degree view. This does not have that, it is more like a standing up railway loop.

I would say such a design would be impossible for a ferris wheel, but it looks like I "spoke" too soon... 😏😆

I swear this clip says the words “Seoul ring” more times the entire cast of “The Expanse” in which the “Sol ring” is a major plot device, well I mean maguffin, well actually I mean big magic ring thingee.
To me Seoul Olympic Stadium is iconic. Not as iconic as other stadiums, like original Luzhniki, Munich, Athens or Montreal, but still. By far the best stadium in South Korea.
So, my thoughts on the design arguement. If the South Korean government bought the rights to that original ring design, then they can do whatever they'd like with it. It'd be like buying the blueprints to a house you're going to build then deciding you want to add an extension. It's your blueprint, go nuts!
If not, well I'd bring the original guy on as a consultant and give inspiration/credit where it's due.

for a real second there when you mentioned Sydney, my home city I thought you were going to compare the absolute poor example of an observation wheel that is in Darling Harbour. You could see more sitting on a mates shoulders. They recently took it away when they bulldozed the whole western side of Darling Harbour to build new. And there does not appear to be a replacement planned in the models seen.

Every time I heard Seoul Ring, I pictured the MTG legendary artifact the Sol Ring.
Designers know that designs often suffer when you try to sidestep plagiarism issues. This is exactly what's happening here. The Twin Eye looks awful.

Seoul does have the 555m Lotte World Tower to be fair, and I don't think this wheel will become any more iconic than that.

@@GeekyMedia id wager Seoul is just not really known as a tourist destination and the same can be said for many other asian countries, theyre not viewed as "iconic" nations so of course people have no idea about their landmarks when they know almost nothing about the country to begin with. I think the nation the structure is in has just as much to do with the iconic nature of it as the structures architecture does.
@@Varocka hmm I’m not sure I agree. Many people can name world renowned landmarks from cities in China, Japan, India, and more. But you are right, Seoul isn’t really a big tourist destination. Although, I’m sure that’ll change in the future

That’s a lot of rings coming out of Korea - there The Ring, Ring Zero, K-Drama, Queen of the Ring, Samsung Ring, and now Ring Eye.
South Koreans sure love their rings.
In order to make a landmark unique to your city you need to make it have its own unique architecture style or design. The ferris wheel looks like the average modern architecture sculpture that could be find anywhere. It could be found anywhere and thats the problem with modern architecture. The Tokyo Skytree for example is also just a modern tower that could be found anywhere but the lighting is what sets it apart from other. Same with the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. Its modernist architecture that could be found anywhere but it uses unique shapes and colors that arent found anywhere else.

Imagine going so massively out of budget with your design that the project is cancelled and then still claim your circle design is yours.
I was expecting the whole spokeless wheel to turn instead of just the cabins.
A lego subscription is a microcosm of everything that is wrong with this world.
Seoul has it's own 555 m skyscraper... that's a pretty massive thing to "miss".
Architects are (in)famous for coming up with lofty aesthetic visions that are difficult (at best) to engineer into actuality - many with significant compromises to the original 'ideal' vision. Also, US patents generally expire after 20 years (or sooner if there was a prior application it builds on), so I'd say the idea is likely firmly in the public domain by now, legally speaking. Finally, there are only so many general ways to construct an observation wheel.
South Korea, my thoughts turn to "ZellyGo", red bodysuits, jellybeans, a rainbow-colored poodle, and a robot duck.
Every city (almost) has a permanent ferris wheel as a focal point. What is the fascination with this carnival ride? Especially, the large cities?

The London Eye, although more conventional in design, still looks more elegant than this one.
This is the world's first video where an engineering challenge's narration has been _slowed down_ by yours truly to follow the narration.
Creative and playful, which I appreciate, but the bit starting around around 6:32 was a bit too fast to follow for a non-native speaker.
