It's like he's saying "Thanks for having me here, but I got to get back to where I truly belong. It's been an honor."
That's an interesting take. But I think he was more sick of Earth and its people, but didn't want to let them die. So he devised a way to escape and save them at the same time. He wanted to start a new life, and him changing into the alien in the end was signaling his new beginning.
