One of the fascinating things about this film is how the animators try to avoid using rectangular shapes as much as possible when designing the architecture and technology. It shows that the people of this world may look at the universe slightly differently than we do.
Well, in the movie, this humanoid civilization on their earth-like exoplanet has a technological level comparable to 50s/60s on Earth, that’s why it seems very analogue and retro. Studio Gainax did such a great job with these aesthetics and technical details.
Fun fact: The makers of this anime from Gainax actually confirmed ages ago, that this anime‘s story doesn’t take place on our Earth (or an alternate version of it), but instead on an Earth-like planet in the Alpha Centauri system. The characters are basically para-humans so to speak…long distant relatives.
I watched this many years ago and was amazed at the imagination, the writing etc. The rocket taking off in the middle of the battle is just incredible. It reminded me of something I read as a kid, that every astronaut that goes into space returns with an altered perspective, they consider themselves to be citizens of the world because they have seen our planet without borders.
