A lot of the guys doing animation on this sort of thing studied as Industrial Designers and Draftsmen first, meaning they had at least the practical training for sketching (by hand, I'll add) mechanical and electrical designs. A lot of this design we see is not feasible due to material or power restrictions, but these guys knew how industry devices functioned and could represent it on the drawn page. Watch how that turbine spins up or how the mechanical linkages in the foot fire and move, how the barrells of the minigun rotate. It's fantastical but the physical interfaces are accurate. That's the eye of someone at least trained as a skilled draftsman.
It was a time of prosperity and anime could become art, not the another 3d render harem 12-episode fantasy isekai slop to fill the air. And yeah, I'm aware of my nick.
all nerds, all talented, all waaaay ahead of their time. This level of illustration and animation is just absolutely mindblowing for its time. Even for today!

The 1980 was a time of experimental anime basically if you dream it and it was cool sounding it became a awesome OVA and let me tell you those dreamers had skills to bring those dreams to life.
The level of technical detail they've animated here is insane. 1980s anime was really something else.
So true. Modern anime has awful animation.
The 80's is where all the best shit comes from, like me 😂😂😂

Hand-drawn animation is becoming a lost art, for real.
They already lost it. The process and even some colors from Akira is lost forever
80s and 90s anime was peak

It’s a fucking shame the we won’t get anything like this ever again .
People that animated It could be real engineers easily.
Old times, old dreams, old ideas - compare it to novadays: not needed - too expensive, profit is everything and another awful stuff.

Most of them were originally trained as Industrial Draftsmen, check out the history of Kow Yokohama if interested as an example.
