As much as I admire John and his ability in music I can’t agree. He’s sings on a lower subject here, possibly because he’s got trouble reaching the high notes as he did when he was young. That’s absolutely natural but you would be lying to yourself and everyone else here if you would claim that his voice has improved compared to back then. If you like his voice more in this version that’s simply because of taste and perhaps admiration.
Actually it’s a friendship song. Bernie wrote lyrics for John when they were living together at John’s mother house. It sounds like a love song because Bernie loved John as a true friend... and they are to this day.
He got a surgery in his throat around the late 80s early 90s. He had something I think his vocal chords area that could cause cancer so he got it removed and his vocals were afectes by this that’s why.
I already liked Elton John but this song i consider not only my favorite of his but also one of my favorites as well as her version... it makes me think about the relationships i had and the i have today, but it makes me more think about my father, a guy who has excellent taste in music, and before RUclips came along he collected CDs with several Elton John songs. It is kept to this day. My father is often clueless, and sometimes he is quarrelsome and causes trouble, but in the worst and saddest moments he always knew how to help, especially when is about me. Recently i have seen my friends from work losing their fathers, and i immediately think about mine: unfortunately this day will come. And suddenly. And regardless of whether I'm prepared or not, it's going to hurt a lot.
This song reminds me so much of the memories I had with my mum whilst she was alive. She made my life worth living every single day and I miss her everyday but this song helps me remember the good times.

Saw Elton John and Dave Mason in concert in 1976 at the old Patriots stadium on July 4th 1976, bicentennial celebration of the founding of the USA. It was such a phenomenal show, it was the first concert that I ever went to! I was too young to drive, went with some people who were older. #Memories
