Are you thinking of fair weather friends? Who are only there when the times are good? I think he’s talking about the opposite: people who have been through hard times, the rain, so are your real people. They know, understand, and will be there for you when you go through those hard times. They are the best people there are, and are freely loving people, Gordon says. I agree.
Canadian Railway trilogy says more about the devolpment of Canada than any other song I've ever heard! Truly a Lightfoot classic up there with " the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald "!
Rainy day people "all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above" ...this song celebrates the people who bring us up when we're feeling down! They know that above a darkened day is the sun!
"Gord's Gold" is one of my favorite albums! You would LOVE "Song For A Winter's Night" (Track 1, Side 2). "Rainy Day People" have seen me through some very dark times, and this song reminds me of that, and it reminds me that I need to be there for others.
The human brain is an imazing thing. I know for a fact I haven't heard that song for 49 years. After the song was on for 3 seconds I thought 'Oh yeh, I remember that song!'
For anyone interested in Gordon Lightfoot's early years singing here at the Opera House in Orillia, I've posted a link beginning at 4:05 ruclips.net/video/GdIGDypb8Bg/видео.htmlsi=qA06-eEAY3HDtPMR
For your trip down Lightfoot lane: "Affair on 8th Avenue", "Beautiful", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "The Last Time I Saw Her" "Ode to Big Blue", "Old Dan's Records", "Heaven Help the Devil", "Shadows", 14 Karat Gold", "Your Love's Return (Song for Stephen Foster)", "Make Way For The Lady", "Spanish Moss", Bitter Green", Carefree Highway", "Minstrel of the Dawn", "All the Lovely Ladies", "Ode to Big Blue", "Christian Island (Georgian Bay)". "Dream Street Rose", "Endless Wire", "Ghosts of Cape Horn", If Children Had Wings", "I'm Not Supposed to Care", "Is There Anyone Home", "Looking at the Rain", "Now and Then", "A Passing Ship", "Race Among the Ruins", Rainy Day People", "Softly", "Song for a Winter's Night", "Stone Cold Sober", "Talking in Your Sleep", "Triangle", "Thank You for the Promises", "Summertime Dream", "She's Not the Same", " On the High Seas", "Now and Then", "Pussywillows, Cat-Tails", " If You Need Me"... Give these a listen, and I think you will see why I say that Gord is alone at the top. There are singer-songwriters, and there is Gordon Lightfoot
It is played with a slide, but you were referring to a "steel guitar". There are "lap steels", but I think this was a "pedal steel guitar" which is on a stand and has knee levers and foot pedals to give the player more chord options.
If Gordon wasn't the best, he's in the top two. I recommend Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Ghosts of Capehorn, Steel Rail Blues, Bitter Green and Endless Wire.
Maybe this is a Canadian thing but sunshine people are around when things are sunny. Rainy day people are around when things are grey, raining and not just a good time.

That's how I interpreted the song too. One of Gordon's best.
RIP Gordon, you gave us many wonderful memories
"Rainy day lovers don't love any others"....they love the opportunity to elevate the spirits of others!

Gordon Lightfoot was one the great singer/songwriters of the seventies. The best decade ever for those particular artists.

Beautiful Angela. Gordon Lightfoot has a lot of great songs. Try Song for Winter's Night and Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

Rainy day people are the best.

Two of Gordon's epic story ballads are The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and The Canadian Railroad Trilogy - both epic tales.
I really miss this guy - from a fellow Canadian. The expression I think you are looking for Angela is a 'fair weather friend'.
Thanks for the reaction. You can hear that sound in High Hopes by Pink Floyd.
Polynesian music uses the pedal steel guitar, as well.

Beautiful song and a lovely reaction 😅
I think they're opposite to those mentioned in the old English phrase - "fair weather friends."
George Harrison uses the slide guitar a lot. ✌️🖖

Pink Floyd used a steel slide guitar from time to time.

This is a good song to foxtrot to!
Given the time of year, you should really check out his song "Song for a Winter's Night"
You are thinking about a pedal steel guitar. I have always had a soft spot for good pedal steel myself.
is that a Star Trek pendant around your neck ?
I know this song and it is a welcome relief from the overplayed, repetitious Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
