This movie took me out emotionally as a mother. The symbolism of self-sacrifice, not wanting to let you kid go while also wanting them to succeed, giving up your own well being to help them thrive. Damn.... it just hit so hard. I loved it
I’m so with you on your comment here, when the mentor bird was like “don’t let his feet touch the ground, train him all day” I was like crushed because it’s so hard to walk that balance line of protect them but don’t over protect them 💔 get them ready for life
As an elementary school librarian, I'm so happy to see this book turned into a movie. The reason it has multiple endings was because they tried to fit two books into this movie. And there are multiple jumps in the books to speed up the story. It's a book for early chapter book readers, and you have to make sure they are entertained every moment to keep them reading. Hope this clears things up. Can't wait to see it!!
I wasn't upset with most of the changes from the text. SPOILER: I wish they had kept the two bear cubs with their mother, but I also wasn't mad at the shift to a single bear on the island.
@@ThePonderer Now I get to be that guy that says I didn't much care for Puss 2. Panic attacks and choppy animations that make my eyes hurt were a solid recipe for "meh." I watched this movie yesterday and in my review I said: Dreamworks woke up and decided they're gonna make this movie a masterpiece. And they did. They got up, ate and left everyone else in the dust. I loved everything about this movie. Everything. I cried a lot of tears, multiple times.
My boyfriend and I ugly cried while watching this movie. Super heartfelt with beautiful visuals and score. Incredible movie and I hope it does well in the box office so it shows the animation industry that we want “original” films like this.
I was talking with my sister about this subject in the film, the difficult stage of adoptive teen kids when they hate their adpt parents and the reconciliation that comes after adulthood
I’m with Jonathan here: 10/10. Gorgeous visuals, a score that is discrete when it needs to be and emotionally amplifying at other times, stellar VO work. My wife and I cried at multiple points. This is an all-timer and will have big staying power IMO.
"Might not be suitable for a sensitive toddler." Is very accurate, we have a sensitive toddler and he tried his very best to watch the whole movie without being overloaded. I legit almost cried near the ending.

I am currently attending a small town college (when I say small I mean there is no Starbucks here) but we do have a movie theater, and because there isn’t much to do here we all go watch movies. It’s a small theater with one screen and maybe about 10 rows of seats and they only play one movie a week. But it’s one of the best places in the world, I can’t wait till this movie comes to my theater!
Might be the best kids/family movie I've ever seen. Took my three year old to the theater on Saturday night to see it. It was so good, I cried three times. I brought my daughter to see it again with my wife/her mom; it's an elite movie! I cried seeing it again, and my wife cried four times. We left the theater feeling good and full of love
I think the structure is just because it’s based on a kids book that covers a lot. Loved the book as a readaloud with my kids, so I’m excited for the movie.

I just got out of this movie with my sister and we both loved it! I felt similarly to Alan about the pacing but it's hardly a detractor to how beautiful and curious the film is. The phrase "every frame a painting" is often used to emphasize the importance of utilizing the visual medium to its fullest but I swear there are hundreds of frames in this movie that could be paintings with how maticulously crafted they are.
I cried the first time I saw it and it’s true, this movie is healing. Now I’m vowing to see it every week in theaters for as long as I can. Just saw it again today and going again next week to keep supporting it. And the MUSIC. I need the soundtrack to go with the books I bought for it.
I really hope this does well at the box office. Creatively ambitious DreamWorks has become a lot more rare these days and I'd take more of this than another Trolls film anyday.
Bill Nighy's character isn't in the movie long, but he has an absolutely killer line that gave me chills. "He has a chance if, where his wings end, his heart can pay the balance"
I'm really happy to see this movie getting nice reviews, I saw the ads for it a while ago and thought it looked really sweet so I'm happy it's good! Didn't realize it was based on a book until I looked it up so I might give that a look too
Saw it today. I cried several times. Loved it. It’s moving and heartwarming. Also interesting how they show the machine learning process. I don’t think that you can teach love and caring to a robot, but the movie is great.
The part that broke me the most was at the end and it's the voice change that really did it. I'm talking "UGLY cry" full on sobbing 😭 *Happy robot voice* "Hello, I am ROZZUM 7134" *deeper, rich mama‐voice* "...but you can call me- Roz."
I saw it today with my girlfriend and my son(7). I'm not a crier. We all cried. There are some moments in this movie that hit so hard as a parent, especially a (technically)single parent, that I couldn't help it. Parenting, found family, selflessness, community, this movie hit it all. Also, to second Alan's point, the possum family was a much needed bit of dark humor and levity.
I finally got to see it a few hours ago and I am still emotionally exhausted. Few movies has made me cry so hard as this one. Lots of laughs as well, but man...
I saw this movie the second time last night. It's beautiful, sweet and wholesome, and innocent. The music as a whole was great, it has a full soundtrack. The art style was a gorgeous mix of traditional and cgi style and the voice acting was on point. I love how Roz changes in bothed the way she talks and moves the more human she became. I struggle with deep depression, I don't see much light in life but this movie I couldn't pull my eyes away from. For the first time in years, media made me feel something good again. It put me in a much brighter mood and for once I genuinely felt happy. Most media feels so empty and like a cash grab, even if entertaining but this felt like something from the heart. A passion project.
My aunt & I saw this movie last sunday. We originally went to see Joker 2, but we walked out after half an hour. (I already saw the compleate movie a day before with my friends and I didn't realy liked it much). We then went to see this movie and we both loved it! It was so beautiful and cute. I even cryed a bit.
I love that the film didn’t end where I thought it was going to end! I love that it played with the structure of the story like a robot learning to rewrite its programming
it is my new favorite movie. not my new favorite animated film, but my favorite movie. it spoke to my soul as I am navigating some difficult parenting challenges with my daughter. we saw it together at the theater and, she is only 6 so we couldn't debrief but so much, but i could tell that we were both really feeling that movie on a deep level.
I absolutely loved it. So emotional and heartfelt. I loved the message and acceptance, belonging and coming into who you are. As a Neurodivergent individual who didn't fit in at school, I related to this so much ❤
I recall watching the teaser for it when it came out and the one thing that caught my eye was the animation of this movie will play out and the rendition of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. Now that I’ve watched the movie today, it was way more than I could ever ask for. Because of my nature enthusiast trait, I knew that it would affect me but I never thought it would hit very deeply, especially when approaching to the climax. I should’ve watch this tonight but I had to improvise due to the options that were given to me. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every second of it and I would agree that this is Dreamworks’ finest movie yet. For those of you who haven’t seen it, do it now or the day after. It’s better that way. Trust me.
I wasn't expecting much from this movie when I went to go see it, and I was utterly blown away. The trailers felt like a story I had seen before, and it a way it is, it's a good way. There is a reason why we tell these sorts of stories. It's a story we know because it's a real story, and this is telling it with all of the heart and all the talent.
My daughter is reading the books now and her class is going to the movie over break. I am sure I am going to hear all about it before I even get to see it myself.
I cried like 3 or 4 times during this movie and it caught me completely off guard. My son wanted to see this movie because he read the book in school. and it was nothing like what I was expecting having only known the title. I thought I was going as a concession to my kid, and I'm sure I loved it more than he did. so well done.
I don’t often cry in the cinema… but by god, they got me! DreamWorks and the creative team deserve for this to be a smash hit. And it would be a lot of good put into the world if huge scores of people watched this. Just magic.
I personally really loved this film. The shots and animation were all so well done. I was so impressed with kit connor, coming from a tv show to voice acting is a huge jump. I think I cried either the entire movie or in bits like 3-4 times. I love the strong sense of community, even if you don’t like them, you’ll still help.
I actually really liked the pacing of this movie. Some movies have a climax that just takes for ever and it drags out to the point I become bored and disinterested, but not here it feels like real live were it just keeps going. And the art is beautiful it doesn't feel overwhelming or too busy not to mention the voice acting, it's so natural and it fits so well with the animals. For sure a 10/10 I have not liked any movie so much since puss in boots.
In love with this film and I can't wait to get it! Been listening to the score ever since I watch it. It's so heartfelt and visually beautiful. This is definitely one of the GREATS for the DreamWorks roster 💚
I watched this last night with my GF and we both cried multiple times. It's a masterpiece of animation and storytelling. Can't wait to own it for myself! Best part is that there's still another book to adapt, so we can get one more film with Roz!
I had the chance to work on a DreamWorks movie once (I was not AT DreamWorks directly, they had sent the production in our studio in Montreal). The Captain Underpants movie. To this day it's still one of the greatest experience I've had in the animation industry. I'm a set modeler and a layout artist (here, layout (or previz), is for camera work, not making the background... that would be an environment artist or a set modeler, depending on the prod!). I hope they continue to develop great projects, when it's good, it's SO good! I don't mind the cashgrab they make on the side though... after all, it's probably what pays for developing original great stories at the same time! By the way, if you ever want to talk about the production side of 3d animation, I'd love to be part of that! I've been working in the industry for 14 years and am very passionate about it!
I love animation and animals, as an animal mom this really struck me. I'm so glad I brought as many tissues as I did because I was definitely crying throughout. I'd recommend it to everyone but have to wait to see it again myself. The score really stood out to me as well! A poorly timed instrumental or lacking one could really make a movie underwhelming, but this one brought out so much energy!
This is the first movie in a long time that ever made me cry. "Surprising" is the word I would describe for this film, mostly because I had no idea what I was getting into. I agree with Alan that there were some pacing issues, so I never knew when the movie was actually over. I disagree with being a film I'd watch over and over, only because it hit me in the gut with so many emotions, and it could feel too overwhelming at times.
I know you review films, but could you all do a Cinema Therapy episode for the HBO show “THE LAST OF US”? So many powerful lessons about grief/found family, and Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal are both brilliant!
Just got back from watching the movie with my mother. She doesn't often take animation seriously, but she said she absolutely loved it. She didn't say but I think she got teary eyed at a few points in the movie, which doesn't happen often for her. I got to have a lovely experience going to see it with her, so it's already up there for me as far as Dreamworks and general animated films go.
I cried so much during this movie. My kids kept looking over at me and I'd smile and keep on crying. Everyone needs to see this movie: it will raise your EQ!
Finally just got around to watching this review. I'm so glad I did! I'll have to make time to check it out this week, for sure. Keep up the awesome work, guys!
YES YES YES YES I WATCHED IT TODAYYY it’s an absolutely beautiful movie and I love it and it made me so emotional 😭😭 it’s such and amazing movie. I Chose it and watched it with my mom and she loved it too! ITS LITERALLY SO AMAZING and SO HEARTWARMING!! AAA I LOVE THIS MOVIE, one of my favs this year so far for real as well ❤ Also love u guys and ur content!
I'm going to see this on Sunday, and I am so excited! Been seeing the trailers for a while, and every single time, it's left me with a high level of anticipation.
I’m glad I always sit all the way in the top rows because this movie wrecked me. I was crying throughout the entire movie. 😅 No doubt it will win the Oscar over Inside Out 2 (deservedly so), but Alan, don’t think Dreamworks could push this for a Best Picture nom?
Amazing film. I cried a couple times. Watched it with my daughters, age 7 and 4. The 4 year old was crying a lot throughout the end due to the emotional elements... (she is the type of kid who will cry if she hears a sad song/beautiful classical music). We had a lot of discussion afterward!
I knew about the book, i only read a sample, but this movie is amazing. Third time i almost cried and i really cried at ine moment. I was pleasantly surprised that there weren't any dumb jokes and the movie didn't shy away from the theme of death, that's not something you see in most movies for kids. Even the talking animals made sense since Roz learned how they communicate! Sadly i was alone in the cinema.
i watched this movie with my mom and i cried like three seperate times lol, SUCH a beautiful movie with wonderful themes and amazing characters. the plot is simple but the movie is STELLAR at telling the story it wants to tell. really touched my heart, im so glad i went to see it!
Mark Hamil does some great voice acting. He was on a cartoon show I worked on & if I hadn’t shook his hand I wouldn’t have believed it was him since the voice sounded so different
I liked it a lot. Very meaningful and moving. The plot was unusual, which isn't a bad thing. At first I didn't like the ending, but when I thought about it I realized it was very meaningful it went that way. [Mild spoilers] The only thing I really didn't like is why are the war robots trying to shoot what they are trying to shoot. Not a logical solution to the magnitude of their problem. Also, the evil robot leader felt a bit cliche .
Saw it, watched it, loved it, glad you and CellSpex gave it high regards. This kept going and the visuals are beautiful, high emotional movie but not in a bad way.
Just watched the movie the other day. I’ve not laughed out loud and cried so much in a theater repeatedly throughout a whole movie before! I absolutely loved it!
Just watched it, definitely a very beautiful and cute movie. Currently brainstorming people I can drag screaming to the cinema with me for a rewatch. I do have some nitpicks, particularly about the jellyfish, but overall it was a thoroughly delightful experience.
6:25 I'm 99.9% sure that the portion of the movie when you wanted to make it mandatory viewing for Congress is the same portion that I would like to make core curriculum for every politician - along with a reading list for every Congressional hiatus, including Robert Fulghum's " All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." It reminds me of this summer, when I saw a dear friend from high school when they came in from California, and we watched a symphony at Ravinia together which is something that I'd never done before. During the intermission I turned to them -because we were both shaped in our formative youth by the performing arts and having to work together to achieve a public performance- and said "you know what might make our law making body functional? If A requisite of their job was to commit a certain amount of their extra-Congressional time to learning an instrument that they'd never played before for a symphony, so that everybody starts at ground level." You can't copy the homework in the pit, it shows if you practiced or not, and you don't get your own agenda because you follow the conductor and the tempo. The hope for Congress is that you're not going to spend all of your work day dragging a colleague through the mud when you know you're accountable to them, and they have some impact on your success when you must sit next to them in the pit and be humble or have them turn your sheet music; you have to work together or you suffer, or get a bow to the rib and potentially get a flying resin in the eye if you're an obnoxious s***. That's the same feeling that I got in this movie. It's hardy "substitute teacher vibes" for DC.
This movie could not have come out at a better time for me, personally. I just started college the other month, and have always had this film on my mind prior, but when I realized what it was about, I thought "Oh, this movie's gonna wreck me." And during the "I need a boost" scene, I started sobbing my ass off, and it only added that I watched this movie with both of my parents, so I was sitting next to my mom crying at a movie for the first time since Toy Story 3, which came out when I was only 5 years old. This quickly became my second favorite DreamWorks movie, only behind How to Train You Dragon, and I cannot wait to see if they continue the story, or if they call it there. Either way, I'm happy.
Dreamworks may not have the history and longevity of Disney and the consistency of hits that Pixar once had; but when they have a hit, they have a HIT.
Agreed. When they're on, they're ON.
I know... they hit it out of the park!
They hit HARD

I like that it has an unusual structure, it's very episodic and feels like "moments" in a life instead of plot points in a movie.
Well said.
The part where she's talking to the other robot for advice, I love how at that point she sounds more like a stressed out parent than a machine.

it is my new favorite movie. not my new favorite animated film, but my favorite movie. it spoke to my soul as I am navigating some difficult parenting challenges with my daughter. we saw it together at the theater and, she is only 6 so we couldn't debrief but so much, but i could tell that we were both really feeling that movie on a deep level.
10/10 made me cry waterfalls every time the main theme/motif played
I absolutely loved it. So emotional and heartfelt. I loved the message and acceptance, belonging and coming into who you are. As a Neurodivergent individual who didn't fit in at school, I related to this so much ❤
Just saw this movie with my kids over the weekend, and we all absolutely love it. So beautifully done, and definitely made me tear up multiple times 😂
So glad you and your family enjoyed it!
I have not cried for any movie for many years and this one made me cry twice :(
Saw it tonight- it's so good. Top 10 of the year for me.🇨🇦
My daughter is reading the books now and her class is going to the movie over break.
Whenever im not sick and done with midterms. I'm going to go see with my mom who really wants to go see this
okay you guys gotta do a Therapist Reacts about this movie pleaaaaaseeeee
We probably will. It's so up CT's alley!
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. :)
I saw it yesterday and was so emotional. What a fantastic film!
It's SO good!
Absolutely love this video ❤ just watched it recently and very glad to find your channel through this. Absolutely delightful movie
Thanks so much! Glad you liked the movie too!
I think when Dreamworks really nails it they out-Disney Disney and it sounds like this film is in that category. Will pay the $$ to go see it.
Well said!
Thanks so much!
I just got back from seeing it. So so good!
I think I actually just cried the whole time watching this movie so fucking good. Everyone needs to go see it.
This book has quite an extensive holds list at my library, and the movie looks SO GOOD.
I bet the movie made the book surge in popularity!
Wonderful movie. I saw it at a sneak. Truly an old fashioned movie.
The migrations scene had me legit crying.
It feels like a western Studio Ghibli film
Can't wait for a full Cinema Therapy episode on this movie
YES YES YES YES I WATCHED IT TODAYYY it’s an absolutely beautiful movie and I love it and it made me so emotional 😭😭 it’s such and amazing movie. I Chose it and watched it with my mom and she loved it too! ITS LITERALLY SO AMAZING and SO HEARTWARMING!! AAA I LOVE THIS MOVIE, one of my favs this year so far for real as well ❤
Also love u guys and ur content!
This makes me more excited to see it! Thanks for letting me know it's as good as it seemed from the trailer!
This movie broke me. I cried 5 times during it and I'm so happy for that.
Favourite film of the year, hands down, no question.
I'm going to see this on Sunday, and I am so excited!
Been seeing the trailers for a while, and every single time, it's left me with a high level of anticipation.
I’m glad I always sit all the way in the top rows because this movie wrecked me. I was crying throughout the entire movie. 😅
No doubt it will win the Oscar over Inside Out 2 (deservedly so), but Alan, don’t think Dreamworks could push this for a Best Picture nom?
Amazing film. I cried a couple times. Watched it with my daughters, age 7 and 4. The 4 year old was crying a lot throughout the end due to the emotional elements... (she is the type of kid who will cry if she hears a sad song/beautiful classical music). We had a lot of discussion afterward!
We love post-movie discussions!
One of the best movies I have ever seen in my life
This was such a beautiful movie. Not just visually but story wise as well. My son and I loved it!
I'm seeing it this weekend with my dad and sister. I warned my family I'm gonna cry because the TRAILER made me cry. 😂
It was the best film I have seen in two years. Of any kind, animated, grown-up, documentary. Please everyone see this film.
I can’t wait for this to come out on streaming so I can watch it again with my pet parrot and recreate all the scenes 😂
Best animated movie I have ever seen, EVER ❤
i watched this movie with my mom and i cried like three seperate times lol, SUCH a beautiful movie with wonderful themes and amazing characters. the plot is simple but the movie is STELLAR at telling the story it wants to tell. really touched my heart, im so glad i went to see it!
in the theater about to see it!
OMG IT WAS SO GOOD
Mark Hamil does some great voice acting. He was on a cartoon show I worked on & if I hadn’t shook his hand I wouldn’t have believed it was him since the voice sounded so different
Loved seeing you guys at FanX today. Looking forward to seeing this movie!
Also, the evil robot leader felt a bit cliche
.
Well - the book is great!!!!
I really like all the wink wink 😜 jokes directed at us mom's....😂😂😂I felt seen😅😅
6:25 I'm 99.9% sure that the portion of the movie when you wanted to make it mandatory viewing for Congress is the same portion that I would like to make core curriculum for every politician - along with a reading list for every Congressional hiatus, including Robert Fulghum's " All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten."
It reminds me of this summer, when I saw a dear friend from high school when they came in from California, and we watched a symphony at Ravinia together which is something that I'd never done before.
I look forward to seeing you do this one in the future!
The JOY I felt watching this movie! 😍
