- In an era of movie that is dominated by franchises and sequels, originality can still survive and create something beautiful, and The Wild Robot is great proof of this. In this review, I’ll be looking into what makes the Chris Sanders-directed movie so heartfelt with its painted-like animation, along with sharing my reaction to see if I’ll agree with what critics say by calling this the best movie from DreamWorks Animation.

I liked the little detail of Roz feeling around her neck every now and then because that's where Brightbill used to sleep when he was little. touches like that with character animation is always appreciated
WAZOWSKI! YOU FORGOT YOUR PAPERWORK
Did you notice near the end of the movie, the spot on her neck where Bright Bill always sat was more shiny? Because it was polished by him sitting there so frequently…. Honestly the attention to detail in this film is astounding
The perfect masterpiece to send off in-house productions at DreamWorks. The cast and characters are perfect, it's not afraid to show nature being as cruel as it is beautiful, and the emotional beats hit so hard. I love Fink's character development and the scene where Brightbill leaves on migration and Roz catches his feather makes me tear up every time.
GET A LIFE STOP IT WHY ARE YOU RVERYWHERE STOL STOP STOP
I'm 26 years old, and I almost cried when Brightbill said "I love you mom" when Roz was shutdown on the ship
My sister is currently at the same age, meanwhile my brother and I are only 1 year short and just yesterday we got to watch this film and it was very emotional.😭
Spoiler alert!!!!
I’m a 30 yo dude and I bawled out loud during that scene lol.
Im 37, same for me!
As this is DreamWorks Animation's final in-house production before having their future projects completely outsourced by other studios next year, I consider “The Wild Robot” the perfect send-off and thank the team in Glendale for going out on a high note with this!
I have heard The Bad Guys 2 was partially done in-house.
@@ReleaseCoyoteVsAcme2024same with dogman im pretty sure
Dog Man will be done at Jellyfish Pictures
And this completes the quadrilogy of heartwarming animated movies about robots (The Iron Giant, WALL-E, Robot Dreams, and The Wild Robot).
I guess BlueSky’s Robots is the forgettable spin-off.
Ron’s Gone Wrong is pretty good too
Roz looks a bit more like the robots from Ghibli's Castle In The Sky to me
Big Hero 6
The word is actually "tetralogy."
(9/10) The Story
(10/10) The Animation
(10/10) The Characters
I Give The Wild Robot (10/10) It's a Very Emotional Masterpiece DreamWorks have ever Made
I actually think it’s the best movie I’ve ever seen I barely stopped crying after the beginning of the migration part. Also why is the story a 9/10?
@@frisk-jl6zg I am not OP but to me the ending did get rushed, if it had time to breathe, given how great the first 3/4 of the movie was in adaptation, it would've gotten a 10 for me, the pacing at the end is the only thing holding me back from a full 10. Nonetheless this film is fucking awesome no question and is a great recommendation to anyone.
I agree with the pacing being kinda fast but its understandable for the amount of story they wanted to tell within a feature film length. Other than that this is easily a 10/10 movie. Hope they have some sort of directors cut to make this film feel less rushed.
@@frisk-jl6zgsame.. I’m a 30 yo dude and had consistent tears in my eyes after the migration scene to the end. Dunno why but this movie made me very emotional. Such a good film.
This is not only an amazing swan song for Dreamworks in house animation projects, this is a phenomenal film to celebrate dreamworks animation 30th anniversary. A beautiful story, awe inspiring animation, and very relatable and memorable characters. What Wall-E is to pixar is what the wild robot is for Dreamworks animation. 9.6/10
And it’s also what The Iron Giant is to Warner Bros
@@jamesgeorgi6627 "The Iron Giant" of the 2020 decade you might say.
That's because it is exactly the same as Wall-e. It's basically a copy.
@@Taydarhow is the story similar to Wall-E in any way aside from the fact that it’s about robots?
@@nojorooney a robot takes care of something which defys their programming, gets attacked by a master robot, loses all their memories, only for them to come back through the power of love. Exactly the same.
This film better get you seal of approval. This film is an instant classic and I have not heard the audience laugh harder at any film in a few years. I see this winning the Oscar over Inside Out 2.
Honestly I’m pulling more for Wild Robot than Inside Out 2 myself, but if the latter wins, I wouldn’t necessarily be complaining either.
It already got the seal
@@davidanthonymercado7064 Agreed. I feel Chris Sanders is overdue to win.
I'd love to see an animated film finally win Best Picture
@scottvasquez1401 nobody laughed in my screening.
Roz, WALL-E, Baymax and Iron Giant would make a great team 😉
Tell me about it
I NEED FAN ART OF ALL 4 OF THEM TOGETHER NOW!!!😁
With Bender thrown into the mix.
@@auntiesophietime9677 Add bastion and eve into the mix as a cherry on top.
I would also include C-3PO and R2-D2 as well.
This doesn’t feel like a Dreamworks movie, and I mean that in the best way, this feels more like Studio Gibli and Cartoon Saloon if I’m honest.
That’s good! Time to raise the taste of the masses!
Apparently they were inspired by Studio Ghibli too (as seen in the robot that's giving The Castle in the Sky)
Also the way it feels sincere and homey ❤ such a good movie
this feels like a total dreamworks movie to me
This movie had me sobbing by the end 😭
Same here and it made me love my parents even more than I already have before seeing this.
This could be the next HTTYD or "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."
I try not to compare, I see it as a great new addition
I'd add that it really deserves it.
I think it’s better tbh
Another thing about the animation is how when Rozz first arrives on the island she looks shiny and polished, but by the climax she looks dirtier with plants growing on her demonstrating how she's literally becoming part of the island.
Also how her voice started to sound more human as the movie went along.
Finally, a Chris Sanders directed movie gets the seal of approval! Not only that, it looks like DreamWorks managed to have a good 30th birthday after all from the well reviewed Orion and the Dark on Netflix, to the box office success of Kung Fu Panda 4, and now the massive praise for The Wild Robot. And yes, it’s true that this year is a step up from last year where they underperformed with critics with Ruby Gillman (which was their biggest box office flop after Spirit Untamed) and Trolls Band Together. DreamWorks Animation may be the kind of studio where they release not so great movies alongside the awesome ones, but it’s great that they got a new winner in their hands with The Wild Robot
"How to Train Your Dragon" really deserved it back in the day.
@@GingerWizzard1994 oh absolutely, even if it was the pre-seal of approval days
It would've been awesome if "Orion and the Dark" got a theatrical release, even it's written by Charlie Kaufman of Eternal Sunshine fame.
❤️💖 This animated movie marks the directorial comeback of Chris Sanders who is a well known Disney and DreamWorks animation legend who directed Lilo and Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon and the Croods. The last time he directed an animated movie was the Croods back in 2013 and it's been 11 years since he directed an animated film in a decade! Although he directed a live action film the Call of the Wild back in 2020. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
Huh, neat.
Chris Sanders directed Croods, and then Wild Robot
Joel Crawford directed Croods 2, then Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Im a 34 y/o Navy veteran and I cried like a damn baby this entire movie with a huge smile from ear to ear. 10/10 for me my new favorite DreamWorks film. I really connected with Bright Bill as a character.
Oh, I didn't realize he was voiced by Nick from Heartstopper! It's nice that both Nick and Charlie are both involved in major projects. They deserve it!
After i saw the title, I automatically knew that you would give this movie the AniMat Seal of Approval
Yessss finally some love for Kit Connor’s performance as Brightbill! Him, along with Pedro Pascal and Lupita Nyong’o really stood out for me in terms of voice performances!
DreamWorks is leaving their Glendale headquarters but at least they made one more masterpiece before they get to set up shop elsewhere...
They are still making films in Glendale, they are just partnering with different animation studios to make their movies, all the way in the U.K., Burbank, or somewhere else.
@@TheRVengerCompany They'll still make good stuff I'm sure.
This movie is so wonderful, but I’m disappointed that the DreamWorks Animation Glendale headquarters is closed.
The Wild Robot was the first movie in a long while to make me actually cry.
I was happy to see Dreamworks could still make movies like this. Though I'm now sad to hear this'll be the last of it's kind.
At least the end credits scene served as a fond farewell.
This movie is dreamworks equilivent to pixars Wall-E in story structure and concept, and I find that a fantastic thing.
I got the book for my 30th birthday this past year (weird I know but I love reading) before the trailers came out. Then upon seeing it in theaters on the same day, it made me cry super hard.
I can never fully emphasize how much I loved this film. This is honestly my favorite animated film of the 2020s
This movie is such a greater masterpiece from DreamWorks Animation and it is becoming my Number 1 favorite of this year, and also my NEW favorite DreamWorks film.
That awsome to here
Really am glad to hear this doing financially well at the box-office as DreamWorks definitely needed a hit after Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken flopping last year and their films like Kung Fu Panda 4 and Megamind vs the Doom Syndicate not making being successes they needed to pick up from their decline after their peak with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and after seeing the film in theaters on opening weekend, it definitely earns its success. And I do hope this wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature as both Chris Sanders and DreamWorks are overdue and as much as I love Inside Out 2, I think Pixar’s won enough Oscars that they can go without another win next year.
Honestly, giving Orion and the Dark to Netflix was a mistake because I wish it had a blu ray release!!!
Kung Fu Panda 4 was a great success at the box office but it is definitely The Wild Robot that helped them pick up the slack both critically and financially together
How is doing financially well?! It’s hasn’t even broke even. It may flop.
I really love this movie so much. The story is amazing. The animation is top notch and I cry several times from each scene and I love the relationship between Roz and Brightbill as a mother and son and the acting is spectacular, and the music score never gets out of my head every time
If this is Dreamworks' last film to be animated in-house, they've ended it on a very high note.
Great review.
I have difficulty expressing any emotion, yet this movie made me cry*. It's a masterpiece.
This movie is a blessing to humanity! you will have one of the most wholesome, heartwarming, beautiful experience of life! A heartfelt Masterpiece! Simple yet Profound❤ Everything was just perfect! The music, vocal casting, animation, story, you name it! Such Perfection is Rare! A huge heartfelt thanks to each and every artist who has been part of this project, y'all made this movie nothing less than Perfect in everyway❤❤
There hasn't been a film this year that exceeded my expectations, The Wild Robot is a shinning example how Dreamworks can still make great content during their time of financial losses/ shortcuts which honestly I am on the side of the artists & animators who lost their jobs and are hoping to strike. But as for the movie itself, it is truly phenomenal. Chris Sanders was the perfect choice to helm this picture and debatable, this is my favorite of his entire directing filmography. He and the crew managed to have a great story, lovable characters, stunning animation, a powerful ending that got me so hooked, and Kris Bowers devoting his time to create an epic score. Since the studio is no longer making their movies in-house, at least they did went with a huge bang. My only hope is that they don't have the exact business model as illumination because Dreamworks is known for taking risks as long as they got the right people. Yet either way, this film is easily a big contender during next year's award season. 😀😀😀💜
I never heard of the books either, so I basically went into this film blind and open-minded. I loved the visual aspect of the animation, as it is reminiscent of the Puss in Boots sequel. Very stunning! The humor at times seemed a little graphic as well as the crude humor, but it worked in the long run. But the driving force was the emotional aspect with Roz and the animal characters. The characters were great too, as they kept me entertained throughout the film. And I really liked the music as well. Overall, The Wild Robot was a solid Dreamworks film and I’m really glad I saw it on the big screen!
Last year, My entire school was reading the wild robot
Bless you, Chris Sanders. Bless you.
Honestly reading the book is enough, but omg the nostalgia and tears that I have because of how emotional this whole movie is, and of course nostalgia
Dreamworks and Chris Sanders gave it all with the feature. The Wild Robot is absolutely beautiful!
Dreamworks is known for its cynical humor, especially for using copyrighted songs. But I haven't seen them doing anything serious like this since The Prince of Egypt.
@@aidanhever3369 It's also poetic that DreamWorks' in-house productions in Glendale begin with "The Prince of Egypt" and ended with "The Wild Robot", right?
@@BigLightning4360 What do you mean ? All I know is that it will be the last to be animated entirely in-house at DreamWorks, as Cartoon Brew reported on October 6, 2023, that the studio would be shifting away from producing films in-house in their Glendale campus to relying more heavily on outside studios after 2024.
WAIT, we have blue text like in Tiktok?
The BEST movie I've seen all year! 10/10!
Story 10/10
Animation 10/10
Characters 10/10
Overall 10/10
I watched this movie 3 times and almost cry every time.
This film was AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL and adorable it's a shame that this will be the last film to be made by DreamWorks themselves but I would love to read the books and see if they are just as good as the movie.
Speaking of the comedy, I was bit worried and concerned before the Wild Robot 🤖 arrives in the movie theaters if the movie might get a tonal whiplash you know where the movie wants to be dramatic and serious and the film wants to be a comedy just to make kids laugh and won't get bored.
For example, like in Bambi where we just witnessed the tragic of Bambi's mother death and it gets sad and next scene you know it changes where birds 🐦 are singing and falling in love. I guess Walt Disney didn't want kids to cry and wanted to add that scene just to make kids happy. Another example would be Pocahontas where Meeko and Percy have silly whacky Tom and Jerry route chasing each other and next scene you know Pocahontas fiancee Kokcum gets shot and killed. Yeah, not so subtle changing the mode.
Thankfully that didn't happen in the Wild Robot. That was just worse case scenario.
Bambi would’ve benefited from having an intermission like Fantasia after that famous scene so the next scene transition wouldn’t feel so sporadic and a mood whiplash from the tragedy and drama of the moment of Bambi learning of his mother’s death.
The best animated movie of 2024
❤️💖 Finally, DreamWorks Animation made an animated masterpiece since How to Train Your Dragon 3 the Hidden World and Puss in Boots 2 the Last Wish from an era of cash grabbing sequels. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
Did anyone, by chance think of Boris from Balto when looking at the character, Longneck? I was like “dude,” that looks like Boris!”
Eh a little
Did you think Fink was basically Nick Wilde's ancestor with his mannerisms and voice? That's what I felt while watching the movie.
@@jlev1028 honestly yes I can see it
@@jlev1028 I didn’t even think of Nick, tbh. But Fink does have a similar personality as him, even making a change in his character in the best way possible.
The Wild Robot reminds me of a Persil advert I saw when I was a kid about a little robot who comes to life when it gets wet then walks and plays in the woods and turns into a human child when interacting with leaves, grass and rain
Did that predicted the book as well as the movie?
This movie and The Last Wish go hand in hand as the best animated movies in recent years, both in style and storytelling and heart! AND they're by Dreamworks! 💙
This movie was masterful and currently my number 1 favorite animated film of this year!
Everything from the heartfelt and powerful story, to the beautiful and majestic animation, unforgettable and deep characters, and deep themes, this is definitely one of if not the best Dreamworks film every made!
10/10
I haven't seen this movie yet, but it's nice to know that Dreamworks ended their days of animating in-house on a fantastic note. You know, since this movie is doing so well at the box-office so far while being a little different from your typical mainstream animated film, maybe this will inspire Dreamworks and other companies to try making their family film (live-action or animated) more unique than what they usually do.
If I had a Nickel for every time a Popular Animated Movie co-starred a Male Fox who over time starts to bond with the main lead, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice!
*Nick Wilde from Zootopia, and Fink from the Wild Robot*
There were quite a few times here I wondered if Pedro Pascal was straight-up doing a Nick Wilde impression with his character here, given how similar their voices were. That said, the two characters were able to stand apart in their own way, and it wasn’t an issue for me in the end.
I THOUGHT THEIR NAME WAS THINK NOT FINK WHAT
they are nothing alike 💀
I almost forgot that this is the last DreamWorks movie made in Glendale, CA. But even so, this film was an absolute masterpiece from DreamWorks that will have you in tears. Believe me, it had me in tears by the time the credits rolled. I sure do hope this film wins Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.
Even though they will no longer work at their Glendale studio I really hope this is not officially the end of Dreamworks Animation and I really hope they will set up shop somewhere else
They'll still work in Glendale! The animation just won't be done there
Finally he gives a dreamworks film that is not a sequel to another film the seal of approval
❤️💖 This is the DreamWorks Animation that I truly missed when they made mature, dark and emotional animated movies like the Prince of Egypt, Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train Your Dragon trilogy when they weren't too 😨 afraid to take risks being mature, dark and emotional that will make audiences cry and related to the story and characters.
This is my biggest problem with DreamWorks Animation nowadays they play their movies too safe and they don't take any risks and they are being way too childish and sugar coated. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
The last in-house produced movie by Dreamworks, needless to say, they ended on a high note.
Indeed.
This was one glorious swan song.
I suppose it deserved that. But remember, this is the last in-house animated film. So nobody should expect this studio to drop masterpiece after masterpiece just like they did with the last wish. So you better keep your expectations mid level because the live action how to train your dragon is set to release next year and there’s a high chance that they’ll make a live action shrek. So get ready to taste your own disease, you toxic DreamWorks simps.
I agree. The DreamWorks fandom is toxic as heck. I'm glad I ain't a huge fan of DreamWorks even though I like some of their films.
I’m really optimistic about Dreamwork’s decision on outsourcing to other studios, I would pay good money to see the day Dreamworks and Aardman working together again as they did back when they both worked on the original Chicken Run movie and Wallace and Gromit the curse of the were rabbit in 2000-2005.
Wow i didn’t excepted DreamWorks Animation finally COOKED something for their “ALMOST 30 Years” and receive Universal Acclaim.
I guess that make Disney 100th Anniversary look mediocre AF, so W to Dreamworks.
There wasn't a single dull moment in this movie ❤
Honestly, I wish DreamWorks Animation would make more serious films. Their best movies are the ones that rely more on sincerity than jokes. (The original 'Kung Fu Panda', 'Rise of the Guardians', the first two 'How to Train Your Dragon' films)
Ooooh, so that explains where did the Megamind sequel budget go
The creator needs a Oscar
❤️💖 Wow! This is a nice send off as the final in house DreamWorks Animation production movie and it ended off 👌🏻 as a bang! Their next movies will be outsource to other animation studios like Sony Imageworks.
The animation in the Wild Robot 🤖 looks absolutely 💯 👌🏻 beautiful!
I am going to missed the in house productions of DreamWorks Animation. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
I still haven't seen The Wild Robot yet and I GOTTA See this movie soon enough!
And DreamWork’s in house animated film ended off with a bang which all payed off.
There was a point when I hope the duck will say "I love you mama....".
It sucks that DreamWorks is stopping to make animation from thier studio, but who knows maybe the future films will be bangers. I for sure cant miss this in theatres, I want to feel emotion and for sure I am going to see this thanks for the review Animate.
What difference would it actually make?
@samueluddin9931 what do you mean
I saw this movie last week. And let me tell you that it was a Masterpiece! Definitely the best movie Dreamworks has put out since Puss and Boots The Last Wish
I’m a kid and the wild robot gave ne tears ( mostly at the end)
"Best film by Dreamworks" that's a funny name for The Road to El Dorado, or Prince of Egypt, or Shrek 2, or How to Train Your Dragon 2, or Kong Fu Panda 2.
This film beat Joker 2 at the box office.
As this film is the last DreamWorks film to be made in house, I’m glad it ended on a really REALLY high note. Seriously, this film is a masterpiece. 10/10
❤️💖 The Wild Robot 🤖 is basically the Iron Giant and Wall-E of the 2020 decade! The best animated film focusing a Robot 🤖 as the main character and focus. I guess animated robot 🤖 characters get good 👍🏻 luck in animated films. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️
I consider the former, personally.
and also the Big Hero 6 of this decade
Jeez the wild robot books were my childhood.Everytime I see the trailer I nearly cry ❤
Definitely in my Top 3 favorite DreamWorks films and at this point, I don't care if it's either this or Inside Out 2 that wins the Animated Feature Oscar.
Im so glad I got my family to watch this. Rarely do I find a film that satisfies everyone in my family, but this one had them laughing, and tearing up at the same time. If anybody has the chance to watch this with their family, do so, you will not regret it
This was a well worth swan-song (or geese song more appropriately) for in-house Dreamworks animation. I just saw it earlier, and it was such a tear jerker to enjoy. I loved the strong message, the animation is spectacular, and the characters are heartwarming. I also need to mention that I love how dark it can be at times especially when it brings in the rules of the food chain. Overall, it’s a fantastic Dreamworks film. I just wish the best of luck for the former animatiors that sadly lost their jobs because of universal
A masterpiece indeed!!! Cried five times in a row, plus an additional two by the teasers 😭😭😭
Can you also do Dreamworks animated movies you haven't reviewed like Joseph: King of Dreams, Shrek, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimerron, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away, Shrek the Third, Bee Movie, the OG Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and Monsters Vs. Aliens?
I Can’t Wait To See This Movie On The 18th Of October (The Release Date Of The Movie In My Country)
Chris Sanders doesn't not miss
I think this film is definitely one of Dreamworks' best, it was so heartfelt and felt like such a labour of love from the animators. It's definitely something I'll watch again, and the soundtrack is absolutely going to be playing on repeat.
Also, I absolutely agree, Kit Connor knocked it out of the park as a VA here. He was perfect as Brightbill.
I just finished watching it and I would watch it over and over again! It brought emotion ❤ it brought character development ❤ it was amazing!
17:28 I'm here for big action, big laughs, big tears all of them.😉
I would have believed if some one said it was studio gibli movie
Mat..., that review was beautiful. I plan to watch this movie soon, and I hope to enjoy it myself.
and as far as I’m concerned, this is a perfect Birthday gift. just something I needed after going through a successful, yet a bit painful upperscope surgery today.

Don't feel too good about that.
The music. The character designs. The animation. The writing. This movie is a masterpiece.
The title is irony.
What a dang shame this is the last in house with DreamWorks hopefully nobody loses their job
Probably my favorite Dreamworks movie of all time.
This movie was an incredible piece of art. The animation is gorgeous, the art style of expressionism with the cgi characters are a mix i haven't really seen anywhere else and i instantly fell in love with it. The emotion conveyed in the story in addition with the score is so powerful that i pretty much cried multiple times throughout. This gets a very solid 10/10 for me.
Based on the book by peter Brown

IM CONCERNED THAT HES WATCH WHILE I’M SLEEPING LOL
I cried three times watching this! It was so gorgeous! What a beautiful movie! The music, the characters, the acting, the animation! Everything was perfect! I loved it so much! 10-10!
Not Only DreamWorks outsource to Sony ImageWorks. But Also UK's Jellyfish Pictures and DNEG and France's Mikros Image
I can say that their animation won’t be the same as this animated film. Because from what I remember is that Jellyfish pictures animated that spirit reboot film, and it looked like a$$.
@5:50 is main reason why KOATI resonates me as adult with Latin animals
I think AniMat still has Inside Out 2 as his favorite animated film of the year. If you look like AniMat's 2024 reviews playlist, Inside Out 2 was still featured as the thumbnail and he did not change it to Wild Robot. Normally, AniMat would put his favorite animated film of the year as the thumbnail for his yearly reviews playlists.
