Point taken on labeling the film 'original' - it was a book I wasn't familiar with and I was more wrapped up in it not being a sequel or part of an existing movie franchise. But I understand the feedback on calling it original. Days without saying something to set off the comments: 0 (down from 1).
Hey, at least it builds engagement 😄
@@lawnjart16 I'd prefer not having one word or one thing I get wrong (or even that someone THINKS I got wrong) immediately be among the top comments. It's discouraging and it happens a lot. Just in the last week - this, Giancarlo Esposito (which I was right about), and Heartbreaker instead of Heartstopper.
I personally give a little leeway to a book adaptation if it’s not already some renowned franchise. It’s “original” in as much as it’s a new story in today’s movie landscape.
Karens will be Karens, but some of us did understand the point! 🤘
Dan screw the haters
I'm taking my Dad to see this movie this weekend! He's a senior but loves animated movies and I'm so excited to see this one with him :)
I'm over the moon for this film. Glad you mentioned the art style, that's what hooked me to read the book, it was that first trailer and how the art-style was featured. I admired that the author also drew images too. So happy to learn you liked it. I'll see it this weekend.
How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, The Prince of Egypt-Dreamworks has a track record of mastering book to film adaptations. I'm sure this movie will be something special.
Captain Underpants and The Bad Guys are also great, fun and visually engaging animated films as well. They got those book adaptations on lock. Wish they were as consistent as these films could be, going from Boss Baby 2 to The Last Wish to Ruby Gilman to this is crazy quality whiplash.
@@gotabonetopick2942 I've never watched those films before. Thanks for the reccomendation.
Well, you got Chris Sanders who directed the first How To Train Your Dragon movie so that's nice
This is why I sub. I would have never seen this movie and if so, not paid for it but you have changed my mind. Going this weekend! Thanks Dan
I'm going tonight! I'll tell you what i think if you tell me when you see it!
Just saw it. It was pretty good!
My son has loved the book series. He is AMPED for our viewing later today in IMAX. Extra excited after hearing your thoughts.
So, what did your boy think about it? 😊
Wow, thanks for the update. I didn't know that is how to pronounce Giancarlo Esposito's last name.
DreamWorks is like that kid you know is smart enough to get an A on the exam, but sometimes they slack off and get a C-. When they do get those high marks though they make some amazing films. Glad to see this one is getting high praise. Plan to see it this weekend.
Good analogy
Gonna be real, I've been pronouncing Giancarlo Esposito wrong this whole time too, evidently
Same 😅 I've been saying ess paw zee toe
Saw it last night and it blew me away!
Highly recommend it if youre looking for an animated movie.
Took my kids to watch Transformers One last week. One of my kid saw The wild Robot poster and he really wants to see it. I guess Dan just got him his wish.
How was T1?
I just hope this movie does well at the box office.
its tracking very well, I loved this film
This is been high on my list since I saw the first trailer. I’m so glad to see it’s getting great reviews and I hope it gets the box office support to go with it!
I would have bet $10000 that the fox was voiced by Ben Schwartz...and I would have challenged someone to a duel if they had tried to argue that it was Pedro Pascal instead
It's crazy how far good voice acting adds to the immersion. The Sonic 3 trailer takes me out everytime I just blatantly hear Keanu Reeves using his standard voice for Shadow.
We're planning to see it on Tuesday but we're going to see it Wednesday in Dolby Cinema and I love animation and anime and when I saw the first trailer of the wild robot I was amazed of the design and the characters and the background song got me emotional and I was already on board to see it.
A new Dan Murrell review? Instant watch.
It's crazy how much the fox sounds like Chris Pine. I was positive watching it the fox was Chris Pine but nope it's Pedro.
Definitely going to check this out.
Could not agree with you more Dan! This movie evoked the purity of the human experience and human emotion out of me. I laughed, I cried in triumph, I wept tears of sadness and loss, and I think a piece of art that can pull that out of you is worth championing and ABSOLUTELY worth seeing on the big screen!!! Great review Dan🙌🏻
It's not coming out here in Ireland for another 3 weeks but it'll be the first animated movie I've seen on the big screen since last summer. And I work in animation!
Oh that 3 weeks wait is 100% worth it. This film is beautiful all around.
Mark Hamill always disappears into his character voices - in the best possible way!
Thanks for your review!
Thank you for your reviews. I will check this movie out. Keep up the good work
Looking forward to this movie!
Thanks for another review!! I look forward to every one
Perfect double feature with The Substance….
Technically I’m joking, but I actually am going to see both of them on Saturday.
The Substance is batshit crazy. Loved it.
I also saw both those movies and My Old Ass in the last four days, and all three were well worth going to the theater for.
You actually did a good job pronouncing Giancarlo Esposito name, so many people pronounce it as it was a Spanish name…
Good job Dan
Yeah. His name is hard because it is Italian not Spanish, plus it has extra flavor from Denmark, where he was born, and English because his mother was American. That makes it really hard to pronounce correctly because people assume Spanish when it’s Italian plus extra flair, all of which makes the pronunciation less Spanish-like.
Wait til you find out about how to say Willem Dafoe
What really surprised me was the passion and anger from so many people that were furious that I'd pronounced his name wrong - when I was pronouncing it more accurately than they were.
@@mykeljewell He's easier. Willem is clearly Dutch and pronounced like the Dutch/German name. Dafoe is harder until you realize it's an Americanized name spelling of a foreign last name. They are trying to spell it phonetically.
@@DanMurrellMovies as a native speaker I can tell you that you did a great job
Going to see it right now
how was it??????
@@kingmack-w6p it was fantastic. I don’t really think most movies have to be seen in theaters, but this is one that has such good visuals that you can’t miss it on the big screen.
@@godspeedrebirth gotcha.. literally just bought a ticket for later today..thanx bro
@@kingmack-w6p anytime
Waiting for the UK release in a couple of weeks but will definitely be there with son on release day. Hope enough people see it to demonstrate to the studios that if they make great films the audience will turn up
We took our 3 year old to see this last night and she enjoyed a good bit of it. But I wouldn't recommend taking someone that young. There were some visually scary parts of it and the themes are pretty heavy (they use the words death and kill quite a lot).
The temptation to comment “First” was way too strong…so I’ll just talk about how I wanted to do it but didn’t. That’s not cringe right?
Dan i really like this review, Thank you, i going to watch this now ,and i like this video for you 🤗🤗
Just came back from watching this with my family of 3 gen (they almost never go to the cinema but somehow I was able to convince them)... The concencus is, almost all of them cried. Georgous film. Instant Classic. Bring the whole family kind. Thankfully no annoying theme song, but instead a georgeous music direction that pulls your heart strings from all angles❤❤❤ i wanna watch it alone again to fully cry my heart out.
Idk the voice of the robot just doesn't work for me. And I'm not one of "those" people. I just wish it sounded more robotic or something. Just getting a plain human voice doesn't sound right. We hear other robots in the film with that robotic filter that sounds better for me personally.
Just took my kiddos to see this film, my son red the books so it was only right, best kid film of the year 💯… imma grown ass man in the theater with my kids, low key trying to hold back tears watching this… this hit on all levels on all ages bro… Take ya kids to see it, you won’t be disappointed
The fact that Chris Sanders wrote and directed this movie excites me the most. He has been in the animation industry for decades and it truly upsets me how a lot of people still don't know his name. From Lilo & Stitch to How To Train Your Dragon to The Croods and now this movie, Sanders is easily one of the greatest artists working in the animation industry. I really hope this could be a bigger hit for him. He's such a gem in animation industry, i adore him so much
"-based on peter brown's book"
Point taken. My sentiment remains the same, but I should know better than to have been sloppy in my word usage.
WAIT..... Coco was 7 yrs ago?... I'm now officially old 😢😢
This was an actual masterpiece. Top 5 best animated film I've ever seen
Dan, I’m in the theater right now about to see the movie, how the heck is your timing this good?!
This film was already on my radar and this review has solidified my want to see it.
Dan, you may have sold us some tickets. Sounds great!
I work in animation and will be seeing this movie!
We see you flexing that Dune 2 bucket, Dan.
unfortunately for those like me that live in Japan, this movie doesn't come to cinemas here until February 7, 2025. It's gonna be a long wait...
It reminds me of the Overwatch animated short about Bastion. Basically the same premise, but told without any bit of dialogue.
Giancarlo.. I've been saying his name wrong.. thanks Dan!
The Catherine O Hara renaissance is upon us!!!!
100 % agree👏👏👏
Seeing it today at 4pm
Saw it last night. Woke up this morning thinking, “I need to tell people to go see this movie”
Based on a book. Not denying it's good (haven't seen it). But it's not an original property.
This Film looked AMAZING in IMAX. Went with 5 other family members and we ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
This movie got me right in the feels, and I wasn’t the only one. My audience was crying and laughing and clapping throughout !
The writer of the original book obviously did his research - the name "Roz" appears to be taken from "Rossum's Universal Robots" a 1920s stage play written by Czech writer Carel Kapek, which saw the first ever use of the word "Robot" which is taken from the Czech language.
I also learned today that Giancarlo pronounces his last name in a non-Spanish sounding way.
I was umumming and ahhing over whether or not to see this film but your review has won me over!
Took my family and we all loved it, except my daughter... But that's because she's read the trilogy like 30 times and her expectations were impossible. One of the best openings of a movie I have seen.
Hey Dan thanks for talking about animation and taking time for encouraging animation movie going. I'm not not very excited about this one, but I'm surprised by your take on it. So far I havent been disappointed by the films recommend by you.
What makes me hesitate seeing animated movies in the theatre is that I'm an absolute sook and become a blubbering, snotty mess. I still can't watch Iron Giant without choking up. But I'll take your recommendation on board and go see it with a massive box of tissues.
Well said, sir. So many critics complain about franchise milking but then overlook/trash some big risky swings. Glad to see them paying attention to this one because it is definitely something special.
Dan, you put me in quite a pickle. You now recommended two movies to see (This and ‘My Old Ass’) but I can only choose one for this weekend 😅. In your opinion, which should I see first?
I really appreciated the animation, voice acting and the music but I personally thought the story could’ve benefitted from a longer run time. The emotional scenes didn’t really get me because I feel like the story’s pacing was too fast especially the familial relationship between Roz and Bright. It’s a solid movie overall but I feel like it’s being overhyped. My expectations were too high when reviewers said it was phenomenal. Don’t get me wrong, I can tell the movie was meticulously crafted but I wish the movie was longer for me to connect with the characters better.
It’s not out in the UK until mid-October but we have this bookmarked on our calendar!
Just saw this based on your strong recommendation, Dan, and I loved it. It was also slightly jarring but very funny to see the "circle of life" presented so matter of factly by the characters.
I have a little different take on using big name actors for voice roles! I HATE it! I’m like “why can’t they use some of these lesser known, struggling actors for this?!” Does the Rock and Vin Diesel need MORE money? Spread the work around a little! And honestly,if I know who’s voicing a certain character going in,I always find that distracting. I can’t get Vin Diesel’s stupid voice out of my head every time the animal opens its mouth.
I got lucky and saw it over two weeks ago when New York International Children's Film Festival sponsored a special screening. Both Lupita Nyong'o and Chris Sanders were there for a prescreening Q and A.
It looks great but I was pretty disappointed in the third act with the belated entrance of an unnecessary villain. It gets a 7/10 rating on IMDb. Still, you should still go out and see it (with or without family).
Don’t understand why there’s so much love for this film. Yes, it’s visually impressive, but the story seems derivative, the characters lack any depth or individual personality, and I thought the messages it was trying to convey were cliche and scattered and all of those messages together didn’t add up to to anything coherent. What was this film trying to say? I’m not sure anyone responsible for making the film really knows.
I took my 5 year old son to see it tonight, blew away my expectations and as a parent, this movie had me holding back tears on multiple occasions. Beautiful and surprisingly heartfelt for a movie about a robot. 10/10 highly recommend
I'm going Tuesday. Because of the hurricane I'm working doubles all weekend. But hopefully I get to go
Sadly, I doubt it will be number 1 this weekend. It is not even getting all the IMAX screens. Even The Crow had one week of premium screens locked in.
The art look amazing.
Wow, the second person that said it is better than Inside Out 2.
Trailer looked GREAT. Will definitely check it out when released.
Animation style looked beautiful, rather than a CGI sheen it has a traditional ink and brush style.
You're convincing me, Dan, but if I don't like it I'm gonna do what a Weird Al song says and "I'LL SUE YOU!" 😛😛😛
The movie was generic and stale. If you have kids your kids might like it. It was bit boring for me. I honestly didn’t like it. Overall it’s an okay movie.
Request granted, got my tickets for the fam and I for next Friday, my birthday! My wife and daughters have made fun of me for a few months because something about the first trailer that came out for this really got to me! I have yet to see Deadpool + Wolverine but I can’t wait for this one! Thanks a lot Dan, but let’s tighten up “all the mistakes” please! Haha
Was going to wait for the streaming release, but you’ve convinced me! I love animation, but could list many films I wish I had supported in theaters. You’re the best, Dan!
Glad Dreamworks made another amazing hit. I understand they all can't be this amazing like Puss and Boots 2 but I hope they can strive for this on the next Kung Fu Panda film. KFP4 was fun and not a bad film but would like it to reach the heights of the first two Panda films
Nice review thanks, will check it out as we've been curious from the trailers!
Coco was ok, but liked it better the first time: del Toro's "the Book of Life" (much better)
Agree. Great movie. I didn't expect anything going in but was pleasantly. surprised. My 2 teen boys loved it (one read the book before)
What are the primary reasons why the iron giant didn’t do well, beyond the fact that we screwed up the marketing, was that it was released on August 6 which is way too late, but also it was released against an above average remake in the Thomas Crown affair, as well as a little sleeper film called… The sixth sense! All three came out of the same weekend and the iron giant got forgotten very quickly….until….It wasn’t forgotten….
Just watched it yesterday, and wow...this is going to be a keeper for a lot of folk, absolutely blown away,
Also finally a movie in recent times that feels like it's been made for the audience and the experience not for the financial gains.
I actually went into this without any prior knowledge and without seeing any reviews whatsoever so the treat was all that much better.
Every reviewer I’ve watched have all said it was amazing ! Looking forward to seeing it Sunday!
I'm gonna go see it! But some shows are listed as 3-D....? I wasn't expecting that. Anybody have any thoughts or insights into the 3-D version (worth it? not? )
Hey, thanks for the review Dan and for the appeal to watch movies without big existing IP! Your title also helped the movie stand out - I'll have to wait a bit in my country but looking forward to seeing it!
I /liked/ this one but I really don't understand the level of praise it's getting. For me it was paced really strangely - felt like there were scenes missing or cut together poorly. The final act I particularly seemed very rushed, and it was never really explained why it was happening beyond a throwaway line.
Seeing all the massive praise I'm starting to wonder if my local cinema in Australia managed to screen a rough cut or something ridiculous like that.
My son’s second grade class read the book in class and they are going to see the movie tomorrow. I appreciate Dan giving light to a movie that isn’t a mainstream adult movie. There aren’t a lot of quality animated movies that have deeper meaning behind them. Our younger generation needs more content that can be thought off in deep context and not just surface level ADD fuel. People like Dan will make that happen. Keep up the good work!
I originally had tickets to see Speak No Evil tomorrow, and you just convinced me to see this one instead. Thanks Dan.
The trailer made me want to cry so I'm looking forward to the real thing
Seen it three times already (early release in Australia), and I’ll be seeing it at least once more. I didn’t think anything would beat Inside Out 2 on my rankings this year, but The Wild Robot managed it. Just a beautiful, timeless work of art that everyone should see.
Dan, thank you for taking the time to advocate for seeing original ideas and to support it. I’m seeing it Sunday and I preordered so hopefully it shows up on the box office numbers. I’ve been looking forward to it since seeing the teaser and I’m so glad it’s being well received. I really hope word of mouth gets it the recognition it deserves
This will be my daughters FIRST movie in theaters. She's almost 4 years old, and I had a feeling this was going to be the perfect movie for her first in theaters. It was going to be Moana 2, but I really wanted her first not to be a sequel.
The movie is Great! The animation is fantastic, lots of action Its a bit cheesy but i like cheesy 😅 yeah it pulled it off highly recommended 10/10
Can’t wait to see this on Tuesday in Dolby! Anyone know where I can find that John Williams shirt??
Thanks Dan for the review ! I'm happy they found a way to not be influenced by any agenda using a robot and animals, well done, now I'm going to buy tickets.
I 100% with your REQUEST that people get out and see this movie. I really enjoyed it last night.
Wait a moment, you said Giancarlo Esposito's the way he himself says it, and people gave you shit for that? Whoa, rude internet. Rude.
I saw the trailer for this movie in the theater a while back and it got me crying. I'm glad to hear the whole movie is good and I will definitely be checking out.
I’m debating should I watch this or the new transformers movies what yall think?
Glad to know it's great! I literally cry every time the trailer is played at my local theatre, it is so moving and it looks so so so beautiful. I was hyped already, but I am all the more excited now!
Saw this tonight and I really loved it! Just a really sweet and beautiful movie that has a lot for kids and adults. Definitely heard a lot of kids laughing and moms tearing up in my screening at least haha
My only gripes would be some of the pacing towards the very end and that one insert song that sounded a bit cheesy during the training montage (especially compared to the rest of the score which was downright gorgeous imo).
My 11year old daughter read the book last year and my 8year sons classroom is having it read to them. Both of them are looking forward to the movie and I am happy to support this movie in the future!
Also, there will be sequels, the books are a trilogy, thats not a bad thing .
The wild robot is leaving the Cleveland area AMCs after only a week. What a shame!
