One of the smartest guys I’ve ever interviewed has to be Cy Curnin of 80s high brow new wave band the Fixx. He’s Either a prophet or a Wizard. the guys has written so many classics that lit up their day and seem to define out times now. After a promising first record with he hits Stand or Fall and Red Skies, the band released the classic album Reach the Beach in May of 1983 with MCA records. It was their biggest album and went to #8 on the albums charts which was pretty amazing for a new wave band not named Duran Duran in those times.
It ended up going platinum and then double platinum and had one of the most iconic album covers ever, created by artist George Underwood who would work with the fixx on future albums. The biggest song from the album was the brilliant send up of Government Politicians with One Thing Leads to Another. with hit #4 on the hot 100 but it was the lead single that set up the band and the album for ultimate success with a song that’s become an 80s classic having been used in our culture quite a lot since it’s release from Breaking Bad to ad campaign for toyota. More on that later.
THE SONG is famous for it’s stuttering staccato guitar riff supported by the deep bass that adds up to a haunting refrain that every child of the 80s know by heart. Cy wrote it as a peaceful mediation which he ‘ll explain in the corresponding interview. Armed with an equally iconic music video that dropped in the middle to MTV’s Formative years, this was the perfect set up single for the band and has become another signature song for the band
In 2008, a version of the song was re recorded it for the Toyota ad campaign when they advertised a 0% Annual percentage rate promotion with actually caused some fan outrage that the band had sold out and that the song was being overplayed and ruined. In fact there was a popular facebook group called Stop Playing Toyota;s Saved by Zero Commercial.
Cy Curnin took it all in jest. He admitted he would rather be the ones to sing it but enjoyed cashing the Royalty Checks and the renewed interest in the song. Up next we get the real story behind the song from Cy . As we go into this interview I wasn’t to recognize our amazing sponsor. Zennie eyewear, the glasses I always wear. Add some style and spark to your life by going to zenni.com and pick out a few pair. So much variety in style and features. Here’s Cy with the story.
Thanks for watching, Leave us a comment about the Fixx , the album Reach the Beach and this enlightening song below. share your memories of it.

Man I don't care what it takes for folks to discover The Fixx. I share them constantly. Immensely underrated and too often unmentioned in top bands of 80s. Saved By Zero cannot be ruined by commercialism. Impossible!

Saved By Zero is exactly the song I think of when I think of the Fixx…continued the mesmerizing moodiness of their first album while introducing them to a larger audience and setting the stage for the far more pop-oriented One Thing…but the heart of this band has always been these atmospheric slow burners to me. To each their own!

I loved "Saved by Zero". I think it was one of the first videos I ever saw. Back in the day, I enjoyed "Are We Ourselves" which also had a great video. More recently-- while listening to replays of AT40 (with the late great Casey Kasem) I discovered another of the Fixx's tracks-- "Sign of Fire". What a fabulous tune! Cy's vocals on this one are so, so good. I wish I had heard it back in the 1980s. I don't think it got spun on radio stations that I listened to back +35 years ago! Thanks again for the great videos Professor!

I was just beginning married life and having 4 children in the 80s. Life was so hectic and crazy. Like so many women, I was trying so hard to be a perfect parent, spouse, employee, child (my parents we much older than my peers and we lost our beloved Daddy, Da, Dad, Dada in 87). I was late to the party as far as hearing Saved by Zero, but latched on to it like a life ring! I truly credit that song with getting me through the turmoil of expecting my 4th child,, the joy of having that child, and the grieving process all at the same time. I would hear different things at different times in the song and it helped. I dedicate this song to my late father, A. B. C. (His initials for the privacy he valued.).

i like this song. although when i read "80s eerie hit" in the title, at first, i thought it was gonna be about "people are strange" by echo and the bunnymen. if this song plays while driving alone through a deserted road on a rainy night, you'll end up checking the backseat every 30 seconds.

We need to get off our high horse and maybe congratulate this song writer for writing such a ever lasting hit. Though on the other hand, using it to advertise zero percent interest is a bit much. I remember seeing them in concert many times. The concert I remember the most is the one that had a 15 minute version of the The Fool. I was lucky to see them for the Shuttered Room, Reach the Beach and Phantoms tours. I have continued to get their releases throughout the years. Unlike a lot of artists Cy's voice has stayed strong and he songs almost the save as he did 40 years ago. Their 2012 release Beautiful Friction and the 2022 release Every Five Seconds are good albums. The first three albums are ones I still listen to this day but it's 1011 Woodland that I actuallly listen to most. If you have not checked it out I hightly recommend it. Thanks to Cy (and The Fixx) and Professor for the great video.

I bought Reach the Beach on cassette as sort of an afterthought, I think there was a sale 2 for 1. Pretty sure the other cassette I got was the Zebra album. I didn't listen to it until later that night, put it in my walkman when I got into bed, and was just blown away. I typically listened to The Wall when actively listening to music as I tried to get to sleep. The way Cy Curnin would let out brief screams in some songs then return to crooning, and the lyrics were so intelligent, I think I listened to that album 3 or 4 times that night. Took it to school the next day, played a couple of songs for him, and that cassette got worn out- that year I had to replace it twice on cassette, then finally bought the CD. Everyone I played it for bought it, and I still love The Fixx. When I got my first truck, I had the personal plate said 4X FIXX.
This album is #2 on my Desert Island list, it's pure art.

One Thing Leads to Another is their most successful chart song, Stand or Fall is their signature song and the first hit that put them on the map in the US at least, but Saved By Zero carries the most meaning. I’ve loved The Fixx since the first time I heard Stand or Fall. They have kept the same line up since their 2nd record and still sound amazing in concert. Just saw them this summer. I’d encourage everyone to their more recent gem, Happy Landings. If you can’t find at least one meaningful line in that song that makes you think about your life and appreciate all that you’ve made it through, than you haven’t lived life. “Welcome back from disarray.”

My favorite band for 40 years. Their first two albums influenced the type of music that I have listened to ever since. The amazing thing to me is that Reach the Beach had been my favorite album since it was released. Then in 2012, they released Beautiful Friction and that took over the top spot. Incredible songs: musically, lyrically, and in production. In June of 2022, they released yet another incredible album, Every Five Seconds. A fan-favorite song for 25 years, Lonely as a Lighthouse, was played sparingly live over the years, and it finally made its way onto an album. Many other great songs on the new release, including Closer, Wake Up, and Woman of Flesh and Blood.
