Elias, I'm a fish biologist, and honestly, you did great. Tagging your first few fish can be tricky, but these fish are resilient. If it swam away strong, it'll probably be fine. The data that comes from these tagging programs is very valuable to management, or we wouldn't recruit anglers to participate in them. Thanks for contributing to the science, and I hope you'll continue to do so.
Dude i think its awesome you are tagging. Conservation should be a priority for all sportsmen fishing/hunting a like. I am not a treehugger at all but keeping good stock is essential.
I work for the Division of Marine Fisheries here in North Carolina, and I love that we are able to work with folks like you. Thank you for contributing to the conservation of our natural resources.
I always respect how straightforward you are when things don’t go right for you on a fishing trip, especially when there’s an important issue like fisheries research involved. Thanks to my favorite internet fisherman for another honest, instructive post. 👍🏻
Texas Angler here...just wanted to say what you're doing is mucho important! As you know we lost so many fish during the freeze two years ago and it decimated the Speckled Trout populations. I saw it with my own eyes....miles of shoreline in the Flats from the edge of the water back 10 feet lined with dead fish. The data you're helping to collect let's us know the rebound of the population, etc which helps them place adequate restrictions for bag and size limits in different species. Keep up the good work 👏 God bless and tight lines, Tom Matthew 4:19
Elias, this was awesome. As someone who has worked as a fisheries biologist, I am so grateful to you for contributing. A surprising amount of fisheries data comes from commercial and recreational anglers. You’re doing your part in collecting the numbers that will eventually become plans of action to preserve these beautiful populations for years to come.
Thanks for contributing to tagging. You could easily have the number one spot for several species and we can never know too much about them. Flounder is the most critical to understand right now.
I used to hunt quite a bit back in the late 70's and early 80's in Canada for ducks and geese. It was always cool to get a bird with a band. Scaup, Redheads, Canvasbacks, ... have all been on the decline. Anything we can learn is helpful for the younger folks coming behind us. Tag on!
NC should revamp their flounder tagging system. There is no need to put a hole completely through the fish to get a good tag in them. VA uses the tag guns (tags go in at an angle near the dorsal fin and does not go past the center/spine line of a fish) and this makes it very easy for the tagger and safer for the fish.
I appreciate your effort to help our fishery track and hopefully keep growing. I just read we won’t have a flounder season this year and I’m curious as to what you are hearing. Thanks for all you do!!!
I only live a few miles from you and appreciate the effort that you put in to have a good fishery.I see poaching all the time with flounder and is good to know that there are others that care!No worries with the job that you're doing.
Trawlers come by every day and scoop up 3" flounder. A guy who's out here trying to understand the fishery a little better than the average joe shouldn't beat himself up so bad. Great video, makes me want to learn tagging.
Props to you, most anglers would not want to take the time to tag, although it would be easier in a boat. I hope it helps raise the per day allowance on flounder and extend the season. I feel like the commercial net dragging boats catch a lot of undersize flounder and even though they might let them go, they don't live.
I used to be a NOAA shark tagger back in the day...I commend all who participate in conservation data collection...the more we know the better we can manage fish stocks! Thank you!
Hey very cool that you are being ecologically minded . We all should try to do something to help either our home fishery or water quality etc. Don’t be hard on yourself I am sure after a few more times out tagging you will have it down. 40 in red got to love that.. great video. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. Cheers
I'm glad you're tagging, I think it's a good thing, You're worrying to much. You r intent is good and there is a learning curve. I've worked with Marine Biologists and several several environmental groups. They are all far from perfect, Don't give up.
Kudos to you Elias for doing your share in helping your fishery. Here in Michigan, I think fish are tagged through one of the fins. I'm not sure if that's where you were tagging the fish you caught. If it is through the fin, maybe less chance of an infection happening? Anyway, good job and good video.
I'm no fish biologist but I feel that what you did was admirable. I don't trust a lot of studies that I see i.e. Maryland's Stripe Bass Spawning Study. I tend to trust the tagging process in that you can gather some good, real, tangible, and probably less subjective data. Honestly, if you can target out of season species to help with studies, while providing quality video content for your subscribers to watch it just sounds like a win, win. If viewers complain about the tagging process then just edit it out. I'm a fan......Also, nothing wrong with looking like a science nerd out on that Yak 🤣😂
Long time viewer, rare commenter, But I wanted to share some input. As a hunter, fisher, and general outdoorsmen, I know your feeling, I’ve made mistakes and lost fish and game as the result, but mistakes happen, your a living thing, and your targeted quarry is a living thing, so sometimes things don’t work out the way you intended. Does that mean you should stop? Not necessarily, because if you stop you’ll never get any better, I choose to view it as a valuable learning experience to encourage you to get better, so you can eliminate as many of those variables as you can in the future, to get that success rate as close to 100% as you possibly can……We can never get there, it’s the nature of living things, but I think it’s our responsibility to get as close as we can.
Keep kicking ass Elias! Hoping to do some ultralight/light surf fishing in your area next week while on a NJ/FL roadtrip. Any suggestions on a town to concentrate on? I've been watching for years and I've never seen you surf fishing, so I had to ask.
As a fellow perfectionist I get it Elias. Especially when you feel someone or something is damaged by one’s words or actions. Let it go. You tried to do your best and we all mess up once in a while.
The good thing about the red drum is they rip open there sides on oysters all the time and if they dont die from that bacteria then they should be okay with a little tag hole. I like the idea of more data on flounder too since the season isn't happening based on speculation of poundage. Honestly where did they get their numbers from when it comes to recreational fishers.
Good man.I think it’s a great idea tagging. good for you. I live in Southeast North Carolina, and I’m a Long Island transplant . That fishery kind of sucks now . Fish the great South Bay ,Long Island sound I hope that’s not gonna be the case with down here. I love the area so glad I moved out of that rat race.
Keep tagging, Elias! There’s always a risk to the fish when you’re fishing. Tagging should help better manage the fish population and understand their lifecycle, those data could save entire species!
try chunking and frozen chum bag combo for pelagics in deep water = troll and then spot lock - endless summer action. if you start getting sharky zoom somewhere else and stop when you get marks...obviously reserved for just good days but you may be surprised at what comes up the chum line plus a feeding frenzy is good for views #pump and reel! #bagging n tagging
And I didn’t know that’s how you do flounder tagging! Seems odd? But fish are tougher than we think and if those biologist figured that’s the way then prolly be fine. Cheers man
For the first time out, it wasn't a botch ... well worth the effort. Kayaks aren't, and will never be, a good platform for tagging. There's a lot to deal with already, safely, without extra chores.
Why can't you use a spaghetti tag for the flounder like you do for Redfish? I'm sure they have their reasons. Is there a risk of the knot getting snagged in structure possibly? Redfish do seem a little easier to get the tag in and send the fish on its way though
I'm surprised they didn't provide you with an easier to use tag for the flounder. Even a ziptie would be better. IMO, its not your fault the third tag didn't work out. Keep at it, but perhaps get a different style flound tag.
Thanks for an informative video, someone is going to tag these fish, why not a man that loves fishing and cares about the fish he's tagging! It's going to give the biologists the data they need to improve the fisheries! God bless and stay Safe!
Good job tagging. Kind of funny that you worry about tagging trauma when you stick them with hooks to begin with... Both can result in infection. As you know, handling them well can reduce that risk. Fisheries managers need something to go on, so that data can be valuable. Of course NC bubba politics are notorious for ignoring data driven management.
Hey eilas to you. Regret moving to NC im think either north or south i know you were from Brooklyn just really would like to know what you think thanks i saw you fishing under marine parkway many moons ago
Fisheries workers who tag fish usually practice on dead fish before moving to the field. Just a suggestion you might try practicing on fish you are planning to eat.
To those who don't understand why we tag , and report tagged fish ,the thriving east coast Striped bass fishery is due entirely to tagging programs. It's a conservation issue.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You have more experience fishing and handling fish, someone like you should keep tagging you’d only get better and you’re trusted
Obviously you are a real sportsman Elias...Don't be too hard on yourself tagging serves a valuable purpose Maybe NC should have a better tag system than the punch system on Flounder no one wants to kill fish unnecessarily .
I don't think it was necessarily your handling of the flounder tags that was at fault - it's more the system. Seems so clunky to me that you have to tie an overhand knot in material that thick. Why not some type of cable tie with a measured stopper that prevents it from over-tightening? Anyway, your motivation is a good one and I hope you continue with it.
As of yesterday, NC recreational flounder fishing is closed for 2024! Unbelievable! No recreational flounder season Citing continuing pressures on the fishery, state officials announced Thursday that there will be no recreational flounder season in 2024. The move comes after years of smaller and smaller windows for recreational fishermen to catch the popular fish, culminating in last year's short two-week harvest window.
Why don’t they just use gun tags. They’re all preloaded, quick stick, pull the trigger, record the tag # and go about your day. It’s the way they tag Striper so why this system of having to punch a hole completely through a fish and then have to tie the tag in a knot that looks like it could get caught on structure or debris?
I think you were doing the best you can. Even with the amount of fish handling you have done on a kayak, that looked cumbersome. So with that in mind knowing it was your first time I have these observations. Your time out of water handling was okay, that would come down as you got more experience. The fact that your punching holes in them that could affect their survival while trying to help their populations that’s a paradox tha I cannot answer. Ultimately I think would be done better from a boat with a partner.
Don't beat yourself up for trying, I suggest don't add the pressure of videoing while learning how to tag. You're in a kayak after all! The more information the regulators have on flounder the quicker they will reduce the restrictions. When I drive 7 to 8 hours to fish the Carolina coast it's disappointing to throw back an excellent flounder dinner. It would be better for me to have slot sizes and one fish per day. I hope this video will encourage people in bigger boats to do tagging.
I wanted to really make sure it's easy to see my mistakes and also if I succeeded. It would help share some light on reality of tagging like many other things that need transparency. They aren't perfect that's for sure!
You are doing your best but tagging this way instead of the tags that you push in just under the skin is just asking for big holes and trouble. The loop can snag and pull out or it pull through the flesh as the fish flops during making the knot. It is good that you gave up on this method.
I agree with all you said about tagging and being transparent its a great thing, however the same agency your tagging for is the agencies that states how bad hook and line mortality is??? Doesn’t make sense if your main source for tagging is hook and line does it??? No hate or fuss in just some stuff they come out with makes sense zero sense? Not getting into the whole “data” deal - lol Cheers man love the vids
tough on a kayak. the deckspace of a boat or even a livewell would make it a lot easier. i do think it can be done on a kayak. anything takes practice. the biologists cannot do it on their own.
The vertical jigging master at it again. In his natural habitat plucking a big red off the bottom!!! I have zero faith or trust in the DMF , MFC and DEQ. Seeing hundreds of 8" flounder in fish houses all summer with a two week rec season and length limit kinda shows who they're looking out for. And it ain't the recreational angler or the fisheries. I'd be wary of providing any data that will ultimately be used, IMO, for nefarious purposes. The dmf has created an "advisory committee" they're setting up as the scapegoat for the upcoming spec reductions. They have brought in a couple "rec guys" and a Tuber to be on that committee. And although I do believe those rec guys have good intentions, they don't realize they're being used. When the new restrictions are implemented the dmf and mfc will say, "look we have recreational anglers on the advisory committee". It's a shame but fisheries management in NC is by far the dirtiest most corrupt in the nation. Just be aware of that. The dmf is actively seeking out youtubers and popular captains for their "input" and "opinion". When in reality they're using them to legitimize and give credibility to an incredibly corrupt and illegitimate process.
Appreciate that input for sure. I’m no stranger to these tactics. I do feel for many people on the ground level in these organizations that are trying their best. I never got it started in this for anything besides the love of fishing. It eventually became something more. But I’m not sure being a statistic is the route I will enjoy going down.
_"It’s a shame but (all?) fisheries management in NC is by far (!) the dirtiest and most corrupt (!) in the nation(!!!). Just be aware of that."_ How can Elias be "aware" of some slanderous charge that-as far as we know- is a creature of your imagination? This ugly hit against the organizations you name is a creature that crawled from your imagination. It’s not a real thing, not something you can _order_ Elias to "be aware of." It’s one thing to claim to know that you don’t like them, but you have no evidence to back the scurrilous charge that they are the "dirtiest, most corrupt in the nation." Until you can substantiate such an ugly attack, you should keep it out of this honest channel.
Think about it, you can’t fish anywhere in north carolina without catching flounder even if you try your best to avoid them. North carolina has the shortest season with the least bag limit of any state on the east cost. Now they are imposing a reporting requirement this year if you are lucky enough take a fish. Seams to me that the more power we give them the more power they take. I’m not opposed to reasonable bag laws but north carolina has gone over the edge. You have every right to do what you wish but as far as I’m concerned if you are helping the state you are consorting with the enemy.
Science _has_ thought about it. Single, anecdotal evidence of the sort you present is of little use in fisheries management. One person‘s testimony can be entirely misleading.
“Consorting with the enemy” what a simplistic and childish thing to say about conservation. Even if you disagree with NC Wildlife, calling them the enemy for closing the season for flounder fishing is brainrot. If it weren’t for them the local fish stocks would be wiped out, just like everywhere else on earth with no regulations (look at Asian countries lol).
@@johnmodarres6034they wouldn’t be wiped out. There were 10x more flounder when they closed it than there were at any time in the period 30-10 years before that, they waited until they had recovered to close it.
Elias, I'm a fish biologist, and honestly, you did great. Tagging your first few fish can be tricky, but these fish are resilient. If it swam away strong, it'll probably be fine. Kudos for Tagging. Toadfish wants to know where his tag is

Tagging helps! You’re doing everyone a favour❤

Excellent content as always, I've caught flounder with 3 half inch holes in them from gigs and they living just fine. You doing a good thing.

I’m 100% in favor of tagging and data collection. Just putting my vote in.

This was dope. It was your 1st time in real time doing it. You should look like a rookie. Keep at it IMO.
Thanks for tagging!!
Brother you are a good man for doing this..... for the photos take it while on your measuring tray.
Keep kicking ass Elias! Hoping to do some ultralight/light surf fishing in your area next week while on a NJ/FL roadtrip. Any suggestions on a town to concentrate on? I've been watching for years and I've never seen you surf fishing, so I had to ask.
I think OBX about as good as it gets for beach fishing.
As a fellow perfectionist I get it Elias. Especially when you feel someone or something is damaged by one’s words or actions. Let it go. You tried to do your best and we all mess up once in a while.
DUDE... YOU DID FINE 🤙🤙🤙
Thank you for tagging so that data can be studied to assure future fisheries
Good stuff! What do you think of the new rules the Wildlife Commission is trying to push through where you have to report your catches?
I like how you get to fish down there all peaceful like. I quit fishing L.I.S. up here . Too crowded sucked more days than was good
Not a bad job in close quarters.. Don't know that I would have the courage to put myself out there like that, good job bro.
I agree. Those knot tags suck. They should only use spaghetti tags. Making a puncture through the fish is an open invitation to infection.

I love data! Collect as much as you can!
Surprised they didn't have the tagging gun for you. Nonetheless, awesome stuff pal!!
That’s was cool!!!
For the first time out, it wasn't a botch ... well worth the effort. Kayaks aren't, and will never be, a good platform for tagging. There's a lot to deal with already, safely, without extra chores.
People dog the NC flounder restrictions and seasons, but when the season comes around, I only see absolute doormats. The program is working,
Good data is gold
Gotta watch them ships in the mighty Cape fear
Great video!!
Why can't you use a spaghetti tag for the flounder like you do for Redfish? I'm sure they have their reasons. Is there a risk of the knot getting snagged in structure possibly? Redfish do seem a little easier to get the tag in and send the fish on its way though
I always found a damp towel over a flukes head kept them calm.
I'm surprised they didn't provide you with an easier to use tag for the flounder. Even a ziptie would be better. IMO, its not your fault the third tag didn't work out. Keep at it, but perhaps get a different style flound tag.

Any other Oregon people here just dreaming about the diversity of fish there?
Slammer not a clash correct?
Clash on this one
You need the newer type tags where you just jab the tag in and that's it
Oregon

NO MORE FLOUNDER , ! MARKET'S FLAT
If they had tags like ty wraps it would be easier. Seems like there too many steps involved and the fish is out of water longer.
Some sort of ziptie system would help a lot.
I wouldn't mind volunteering to tag, but they want to charge for membership and all supplies, that's ridiculous
Reckon easier on a boat for sure
I wish my country was tagging fish or have any idea about what's happing to the ecosystem!
You should get a fisheries biologist to look at your video and give you some feedback. You may be doing better than you think.
Good idea , forget the tagging.
lmao he thought he'd get hate for helping our fisheries... fishermen are notoriously the biggest conservationists
If anyone complains about “bad data” then I’d like to know what they’re doing to help get “good data?”
I think pretty much everyone here is in favor of tagging. Dont worry about what the internet keyboard heros say to the contrary
tough on a kayak. the deckspace of a boat or even a livewell would make it a lot easier. i do think it can be done on a kayak. anything takes practice. the biologists cannot do it on their own.
Just be aware of that."_
How can Elias be "aware" of some slanderous charge that-as far as we know- is a creature of your imagination? This ugly hit against the organizations you name is a creature that crawled from your imagination. It’s not a real thing, not something you can _order_ Elias to "be aware of."
It’s one thing to claim to know that you don’t like them, but you have no evidence to back the scurrilous charge that they are the "dirtiest, most corrupt in the nation." Until you can substantiate such an ugly attack, you should keep it out of this honest channel.
@@johnmodarres6034 i said i was good with reasonable bag limits like the rest of the east cost, childish, i don't think so
@@danl.909 you mean science like mask stop COVID. or if you get vaccinated you won.t get sick and can't spread it. whose science are we using?
@@johnmodarres6034they wouldn’t be wiped out. There were 10x more flounder when they closed it than there were at any time in the period 30-10 years before that, they waited until they had recovered to close it.
