  • Fast rider on a CBR 600 crashed Sunday. He wasn't injured and bike had minor damage. Tires were Dunlop Q3, He thought front was 38 psi.

    Mulholland Hwy has been a top destination for riders in Southern California for many years. The Snake section is a little over two miles long. The turns are tight, limiting speed and injuries in the event of a crash. There are crashes occasionally but also great riding.
    The road is public but considered a recreational use area. All rules of the road apply but motorcycle and auto enthusiasts are considered part of the tradition of the area.
    At the top of the Snake there is a park maintained overlook. The sign says:
    "You are standing at the top of curves that road enthusiasts affectionately call "The Snake". Over the years Mulholland Highway has tested the merits of cars from Duesenbergs to Teslas. This particular stretch of road is a mecca for motorcyclists. It's sharp turns offer an adrenaline rush and a chance for fun, fame and often folly.
    To your left is "Edwards Corner". It was named after the late Ed Savko, long-time owner of the Rock Store., a popular road house just down the hill. Hundreds of riders have crashed on this challenging 180- degree curve, perhaps showing off for spectators, who often gather here. Other succumb safely to the charm of "The Snake." "
    Thanks for watching!

      His body position is shit and he's pushing the front way too hard because of it. Also the bike has plain white bodywork so its clearly been down the road previously.

    • @808zsammy
      @808zsammy 5 лет назад +6

      You can clearly see his body to lean ratio was below 30 degrees not to mention the give in the rear tire probably due to unbalance between the front and rear suspension, clearly causing him to hesitate before entering the apex.

    I'm the guy in the video that crashed, with that being said I'm no motogp racer or pro. Just another rider having fun riding at the snake. If you the slow motion, you can see the imperfection in road that caused the tired to bound and lose grip. Glad I had my suit on to protect me, It's not my fist fall and defiantly not my last.
    oh and I checked the tire pressure when I go home, they where 30 psi front, 32 psi in the rear. idk where I got 38psi, sorry for the confusion.

      yeah I could see your front end bouncing off the rough pavement. looks like after one of the bumps it looses contact with ground and you loose the front after that. with rough road like that I wonder if "better" suspension, race like, can help keep the front in contact with ground.

However my bike is completely totalled, front end cracked on both sides, left looks like someone took a bite out of the fairings, tail is cracked open, my foot brake lever literally bent back 180°, after all i still say it was a net "worth it" as i'm getting 2k for my bike which cost me 1.6k and 3k for personal injury when it will all be healed in like a week

There are motorcycle safe guardrails but they need to be installed in dangerous corners like this. The existing guardrails are designed to keep cars and trucks from going off the road and actually pose more danger to motorcycles than if they weren't there at all.

    Happy he wasn't injured, but, thinking of crashes, I'm wondering why this seems to be the first crash on the channel in a year or what. There used to be a ton of crashes here. Not to be gory, but there's a hell of a lot to learn from them, and they generate "useful fear" (i.e. sensible caution) when you see that even riders with top equipment and gear can go down, so it can happen to anyone watching too. They also shatter invincibility illusions. So they're useful. I wonder what happened regarding that.

      The road should be fine once they get the debris cleared out. But the surrounding mountains are completely torched. That trailer park at the base of the mountain was pretty much wiped out. Rock Store survived, though.

    to everyone blaming this fall on the bump in the road. It is a change in camber that is common on alot of mountain/canyony roads.Its part of the fun and challenge of riding them as opposed to a track that has less sporadic undulations and changes. youll find sudden camber change in alot of environements and its your job to adapt to those changes and anticipate them.
    This fall in my opinion is because he leaned the bike over too much. should get his but off seat and push bike away more to keep the bike upright and have mad more contact patch for whatever un anticipated event may occour on a public road.
    A local track near me has a similar camber change mid turn and it made me bust my ass the exact same way.

    Why do so many riders crash at this corner? Quality of the road? Lack of experience? Overconfidence?

  • @kollak01
    @kollak01 5 лет назад

    there is a bump mid corner. you need to prepare for it. you can see his front tire bounce when he hits it mid corner. maybe a little suspension dampening would have helped.

    • @MX2NR

      Sayo at lean, your frame and swing arm become your suspension, not your tire. The frame and swing arm flex and play a critical role in providing feedback and stability at lean.

    He seems to be smooth in all corners, but it looks like he picked up the throttle a bit too early at 1:13, and unloaded the front. This is the result of over-slowing the corner and trying to correct before completing turning.

  • @roythearcher
    @roythearcher 4 года назад

    Its clear the bike was too far over and there was too little compression damping on the forks hence the "bounce" after hitting the bump. it may not have been enough on its own to contribute to the lowside but it definately didn't help!
