  • This is more of a discussion but I wanted to talk about Final fantasy 13. This game gets a lot of hate and I think it deserves more praise than hate. However I think there is 1 big issue with the game and that's what ruined it for most people, and it casted a cloud over the rest of the game. Let's discuss.

FF13's cast is certainly the cast of all time. They were serviceable but compared to the other FFs they were kinda lackluster. I feel like one thing the other FFs did better was despite the dark moments there were lots of light/fun moments to build on the party's relationships and it didn't feel like 13 had a lot of those, they were always on the run and those moments only happened in pairs like you mentioned. Lack of notable side characters/villains too, the 3 leaders that were under Bart were equally forgettable and one of them just gets insta-killed without a boss fight. Even the sequels barely had the OG party, it's like they knew they ran out of material with them considering how little there was which was unfortunate, I would've liked to see how Sazh was doing but he was relegated to a DLC side quest.

I couldn't agree more! it sucks that the cast was such a letdown except Lightning and Sazh of course. Oh and I also enjoyed the combat system in the game as well since it was different from other FF games but it sucks that you couldn't start with all the synergy like you said.

I love FF13. Back then I played FF 1 and 2 on GBA and I had Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 on psp along with Final Fantasy X on PS2.
These games made me love this series and I played others FF games. I haven't beaten them all but but ones I did beat I love them. My favorite is still Final Fantasy 9. I freaking love that game and no game hasn't came close.
I also love World Of Final Fantasy. It is a love letter to the series

I think one of my biggest beefs with FF 13’s story is just that we never really get any downtime to see these people be people. A lot of FF games start with some action, like the Bombing Run in FF 7 or the mission to kidnap Garnet in FF 9. But both of those are something we understand, and can quickly contextualize. Once the danger is gone those characters calm down and can talk like people.
The battle on the railway in FF 13 is so confusing and it doesn’t help that they bombard you with Proper Nouns you don’t understand. And the datalog is not a counter to this problem. The biggest chunk of downtime the characters ever get is on Pulse, and it basically amounts to a reason for Hope to gain Alexander because the ticking clock stresses him out. These people have no chemistry, no downtime to decompress, and watching them snip and snipe at each other is not fun, it’s annoying.

as far as the "hallways" go i think we just expected more from the first Final Fantasy game on then next generation hardware? I can't really say for sure but I have a feeling that's part of what led to the disappointment.
Me? I didn't like the gameplay and characters...simple as.
