GREAT seeing you post again. Coyotes are a little worse this year. My hunting lease between Edwards and Climax Springs Mo is has a BUNCH of BIG healthy coyotes. Got them on film running deer and calves. Stray dogs are BAD too. Hopefully you can get it taken care of. 🙏🙏🙏
Good to see you again! So sorry to hear about the calves!! Hope you can eliminate the predators. I'll go follow you on FB as well. Happy Holidays to your family!!! God bless
Great seeing you again. I was thinking: Bring the mommas and calves back to the barn for about two weeks or so. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Looks like perhaps you need to bring cows closer to home so babies can't be lost to predators. So sorry for the losses. Merry Christmas to the family. Blessings to 100 Acres Woods Highland 🙏🫶🙏
I am far from being against predator control, but the issue here is your herd management, not the coyotes. I've always wondered why you do not bring the cows up near the house in a pen when they have calved or are close to calving. Not knowing breeding dates and not knowing which cow calved the last calf points to a huge opportunity you have in breeding management. There are a number of ways to determine approximate breeding dates if you are needing to leave the bull in year round. Also wondering why those cow-calf pairs were not brought up to the pen when they were found. You mention the financial impact, but it seems you herd management style is very relaxed and not focused on minimizing financial losses.
You need to keep your expecting cows in one small area so you can better keep an eye on it with a guardian animal. A good guardian animal would be cheaper than the loss of a calf..
Can’t you line them off to a smaller pasture section closer to your house (a month before birth) where you have a guardian dog? It just seems that they have too much land to roam at one given time.
Hey Rhett, sorry about the loss of your calves. Have you thought about getting yourself 2 or 3 donkeys to run with the herd?? Donkeys are fierce protectors. i saw one take a coyote by the neck and shake it then stomp it. The coyote was killed. Chad says his donkeys are always taking on the coyotes on his property.
You are amazingly calm considering losing such valuable possessions to coyotes. If it were me I'd be setting up a stand and monitoring the calves as much as possible. Hope the problem is alleviated soon
Dusty from the Bison channel in Davis Oklahoma have several LGD that have grown up with Livestock that might help you with your coyote problem. So worried about your coyote problem. You might needs two so they can get them and protect your Highlands.
Rhett so sorry about the loss of the calves. Maybe it's time to consider getting several guard donkeys 3 or more considering the size of your place, even consider getting some proven guard donkeys. When you got the pony I was worried that it would become a victum of the predators instead working as the guard animal, still do. Also maybe you should keep possible delivering cows & their delivered calves in a smaller confined area/ pasture until large enough to be safer from possible predators instead of open range pasture as you have been doing. Or at least consided getting some proven large guard dogs to keep with your cattle. As large as your place is & with how large your herd has become looks like having 3 or 4 or more might be a good investment. Might be a good idead to upgrade your weapons to be useful at night, some of the hog hunters show using amazing fire power. Just suggestions, you know what you can do.
I’m a firm believer that donkeys are the best defense against coyotes…. Chad Doss is very successful with his 3 donkeys…
Agreed

I've really missed your videos. I got hooked last year, but you seldom post here anymore.

Long time no see. Hope you and your family are all well. Merry Christmas ❤
Now I see you are mostly on FB. I just followed now. Did not know
So sorry loss of another calf. Have a blessed holiday ❤
Sorry for your losses. I wish Chad Doss would get a highland bull from you for June Bug ❤️

I hope you find all coyotes and wild dogs and take care of them. Ao sorry you have lost 3 babies. Just heart breaking and alot of $ lost.
I don’t have Facebook. Have missed you all!

I like your cows and calefs and bulls and
How goes the coyote culling?
Please keep those calves safe. ❤😢❤

Love the video, good luck on finding your sire
Man those coyotes can be tough to get a handle on…

Get yourself a great Pyramids dog they work really good on coyotes.
Chad from Doss farms sent us over. I subscribed :)

I thought one of the selling features of the breed was that they are very protective parents, family, herd? Sorry for the lose.
I grew up on a farm. Cows and the herd are protective but often new borns will nap away from the herd and mother.
Time to get a few donkeys for your pastures
Been hearing coyotes and wild dogs they have been really bad this year
Sorry to hear you’ve lost the calves!
I sure hate you have lost the calves ... yes you have to get rid of the predators.
Heard mule is a good idea. Can use it for protecting the cows
You should find some trustworthy predator hunters that run thermal gear. If they know what their doing they will clean house.
Why not get some Kuvasz dogs they make great protectors, and are more people friendly than other breads of live stock guard dogs.
I know a guy in Minnesota that lost all of his bison calves to Black Bear he had 25 cows and lost all their calves so he had to move them
