+Nicole Foster I just checked the best RUclips videos of The Beach boys, ABBA and the Beatles. There is a connection between Annefrid Lyngstad in ABBA and Brian Wilsons childhood. Annefrid in ABBA had a terrible childhood being born in Norway with a German soldier as a father and a Norwegian girl as a mom. Annefrid was beaten and abused due to having a German soldier as a father in the occupied Norway during WW2. She said much like Brian that she brought the pain into creativity and co wrote some of ABBAs best songs. Im a amateur musican but I wrote my songs to our band in connection with joy and not pain. But when the other three band members and my best childhood friends died in their 30s by different causes it pushed me into writing my best songs out of the grief.

Smart interviewer - he knew how to ask Brian the right questions to get him to open up - I have seen many interviews with Brian and this was a good one.
We all know Brian had a crappy childhood, yet we keep asking him about like we are some sort of counselors. Brian is back.. he will never be able to forget the past, but I think he recognizes how much we appreciate his amazing gift. We need to move on and talk about his music and not his father, his failures, his drug use, his depression. We need to give the guy a break.
Oh, I have given it MUCH thought for decades and just had trouble believing that Brian could be making up his story. And this interview says so much in so few words, esp. with Brian's last statement which said it all so well. Just absolutely remarkable that nearly all of the BEST Beach Boy music ever written and sang came during these tumultuous times for Brian and the group. He is DEFINITELY a survivor!! As for Chuck Wilson, I think he was covering for his brother when I knew him decades ago.
Thanks for your prompt and sincere feedback on this issue and it is MUCH appreciated! Just wish more people would be more polite when they comment and NOT have to use profanities to try and get their points across.
i know this comment is almost a decade old, but i sort've disagree. Brian is a bit child-like. And i mean that in the best possible way. He had such a difficult childhood with his father, struggled with mental illness, and the interviewer seems to be respecting that, and talking to him like a person with genuine curiosity for hearing what Brian likes. And Brian responds politely. If Brian wasn't offended, I don't think anyone else should be. Just my takeaway from it.

But how am I gonna do it, if I don't feel that pain right now anymore". And then Brian said that last one thing: "You don't have to feel pain, you have to experience it"... wow... no wonder why he is who he is. I'm going to record my song.
In fact, I saw an interview where Brian said he didn't want to talk about what his father had done to him. I was glad he took that stand and didn't cave to the pressure of the interviewer.
"What would you ask if you could see your dad again?" "I would ask what he thinks of our albums" Nice deflecting there by Brian. while he certainly would ask that, it would not be the first thing coming to his mind. Brian and Murry had a very complicated relationship.
Apology accepted and thank you for being that considerate to share your thoughts here. I sure appreciate that and that is rare to get this on RUclips. Not sure why the person had to use all the profanities. He or she could have just disagreed without doing that. I thought this was an interesting interview and tough questions were being asked and Brian answered them honestly. I knew Murray Wilson's brother, Chuck, and while he defended his brother, I still believe what Brian is saying is true.
The interviewer did a good job, I thought. Brian Wilson is an Artist, with an emphasis on feeling and the creativity that comes with it. it's just a different ball of wax that you judge somebody like that, I think. It may seem like a weakness that he just "holed-up" and stayed in his room like forever at one point. But it's just that he may very well have tried to get that creativity back together. He definitely had that worth in "Good vibrations" and "California Girls."
Just amazing that Brian functioned as well as he did with his music but he and Dennis sure DID have their "demons" to deal with which led to Dennis's early and sad demise in 1983. I can only wonder what Chuck and Dorothy Wilson thought when he died since they told me that Dennis was their favorite nephew, Anyhow, HIGH praise to Brian for giving his dad some credit in this interview AND for being a survivor all these years with his music and concerts. What a blessing for the BB fans and Brian!
@colindominy Most interviewers over the years would salivate at he thought of interviewing Brian Wilson. His life has been so full of irony and pain, and he seems to always say exactly what he's thinking. Every interview has a new surprise. :o)
Just guessing here, but I think he probably meant, you don't have to feel pain at the time to write music, but if you've been through pain at some point in your life it fuels creativity. But again, just guessing...
One of the few music geniuses left, Brian Wilson. Honestly, I can't imagine what he must have went through in his younger days at the hands of his father. I mean, he's said millions of times that his father "beat him" and such, but it's hard to believe that that must only be scratching the surface. And he's absolutely right. As a young songwriter, I can testify to the point he makes about great art coming from struggle. Some of my proudest work comes from times where I was really stricken with grief and anguish.
Very true, he has. Even long after his father passed, and even to this very day, he still lives with those emotional scars his father left from all the beatings, humiliation, and down-talking. Really, his father was just a monster.
Green Light Music Channel Yea. We all should wonder about his father’s generation and what type of people they actually were. They were the GI and older Silent generations I think, then the younger Silent grew up and mingled with the older Boomers as they reached adulthood. Then the younger Boomers mingled with older X. Now we have the Boomers old, the Xers teaching middle age and mingling with the Millennials.
Green Light Music Channel I guess the GI Generation were mostly confused angry and messed up from WW2. Id understand that but abuse isn’t excusable! I too knew very well what Hell domestic abuse from a father does to his only son whom he should love guide and teach, and to the woman that man called his wife whom he was to cherish protect and love as his own body!
I agree (also in general), and I have just discovered "Do It Again" is a song from the Beach Boys. In my ignorance I thought the Wall of Voodoo cover was an original song (I also just discovered the video for this, which features Wilson, and it’s very original).

This interview is interesting to hear. I knew Chuck Wilson, Murray's brother and Brian's uncle. I asked Chuck about all the "alleged" comments that Brian said about his father beating him and Chuck DENIED that Murray beat Brian the way Brian had said, esp. about his deafness in one ear caused by his father beating him. I came away thinking someone is lying here since I was getting two stories. But after seeing this interview, it sure seems to me that it was CHUCK who was lying and NOT Brian!

I wonder if he still has nightmares. I do. I wonder if certain songs or melodies from that time upsets him. For me certain songs or melodies do.. I can’t really listen to them without literally mentally and emotionally going back and reliving the feelings and memories. It is enough to make my stomach sick and depressed me badly. It’s funny a lot you remember but much you can’t of either good or bad! It’s just shadows or not there at all but fact. It’s better that way, and too because the mind separates from the events happening to cope.. also trying to either forget bury or rationalize what had happened. Hence nightmares later in life.
Wow, what revealing and interesting comments by Brian and thanks for sharing! I knew Brian's uncle and aunt, Chuck and Dorothy Wilson. Chuck was Murry's brother and denied that Murry ever beat Brian and made him deaf in one year with the beatings like Brian has said but I cannot believe that Brian would make all this up. I DO believe Brian and have felt that Chuck was covering up for his brother. (And Chuck and Dorothy's favorite nephew was Dennis.)
Doug Celeste Dennis had also said his dad beat him alot, & said he was a mean SOB. I think Carl got it the least, Dennis the worst, & not surprisingly, Carl was more stable than his more abused brothers.
amberlights1 Thanks for sharing this info. Just amazing that with all this happening in his personal life, Brian and the guys created some of the most cherished music that I will ever hear in my lifetime. And I was not aware that Dennis had also been abused that bad by his dad, too.
+Leon L Yeah, he loved his bros. very much & would try to protect them against there dad. He & his dad got in to a big knock-down slugfest with each other that was witnessed by Al Jardine & David Marks. David said his dad had to break it up between the two of them it got so violent.
+amberlights1 And after talking to Murry's brother, Chuck, in the 1990's when he visited my main park where I worked in San Jose, CA., I was trying to be persuaded that Brian was making up the entire story about the violent side of his dad but I always felt that Brian would NOT be making up this story! And it sounded like Chuck was just defending his brother from the negative reputation that Murry has always had. But interestingly enough, Chuck and his wife, Dorothy, said that Dennis was their favorite nephew and in this discussion, it is Dennis who is the one who would protect Brian from their dad. Wow, what a sad story, indeed, and it is nothing short of a miracle that Brian was still able to create all this magical music after the sordid family life that he had.
I want to also say that I have always felt that Brian would NOT be making up this saga in his life but I wanted to see what Chuck would say. I think it is a case of him lying to save his late brother's image to the media and fans and also maybe that he and Brian did not get along too well and he wanted to make Brian look bad. Whatever the case, he and his wife, Dorothy, said that Dennis was their favorite nephew. And the Wilson couple moved to Oceanside, CA. after I knew them long ago.
whats patronizing is when interviewers ask softball questions or try to befriend the interviewee. this guys asking insightful questions that actually let you understand brian wilson the person. this interview isnt just about the music, but the life of the actual artist himself, now that hes old enough to look back on it. sure theres a line you dont cross but i dont think interviewer crossed it and mr wilson didnt look uncomfortable at all
The story about how the deafness came about has changed over the years. Brian was so young when they discovered it that he has no memory of how it happened. There are a few theories floating around. Brian does remember Murray hitting him with a 2X4 but that was when he was a little older. Of course, Murray did much more abuse besides hitting his son with a board. Brian and Dennis got the brunt of Murray's wrath and they ended up having the biggest problems.
It's obvious Strombo has dug a bit in his research, and pretty much every question he asks has a foregone conclusion of an answer. He doesn't seem prepped at all for the fact that Brian has never been easy to interview, because, having been through the meat grinder of the record industry, he willingly gives 'form' answers as readily as 'form' questions can be asked. The second Strombo heard him uttering a word of PRAISE for Murry's songwriting abilities, he should have jumped in. "But, Brian, wasn't there a bit too much rivalry there, did he try to suffocate you musically..." et cetera... the fact is, Brian speaking well of his father is big news, after being essentially conditioned not to under years of bad management. Sorry, but Strombo couldn't think outside the box and just rattled off question after question from the Brian Wilson interview handbook. Ah well.
I disagree. Brian always gives short answers. At least he has after the (terrible) 80's. Think it may have something to do with the brain damaged caused by Landy. I think it's lovely to see Brian comfortable, honest and humble and the interviewer keeps up the pace without pushing Brian while keeping a nice atmosphere throughout the interview. I think each question complements the previous one, and I don't even think a lot of them were scripted. Feels real natural to me.
LEAVE BRIAN ALONE! ...really though. Like these interviewers need to stop getting all up into his dark personal business. Just appreciate how great he is :-D
Think about it. How would Murray's brother know what went on in the privacy of their home. I definitely believe Brian. Also, there have been others who spoke of Murray's violence.
SuperFringy maybe his mental problems stemmed earlier.. and that’s why his dad was abusive: because “he was not perfect like I want him to be.. he’s supposed to be MY son!” Then that provokes the abuse, which provoked Dennis to defend him, in which Murray in turn struck out at Dennis for daring to “side against ME?!” It seemed Murray was a control freak perfectionist and narcissist, critical harsh and judgemental, stubborn cold and one-sided, two faced shifty sly and arrogant.
Cool the interviewer delves into his past. At the same time, does this dude think he's a shrink or something? You're talking to a legend man, show some respect....
I completely agree. I'm sick and tired of hearing about papa Murry the beast. Actually, I read that Murry's father was even more of a terror and much more alcoholic. That was a real handicap for him. The only counseling for the Boys, is to forgive Murry. Period. (Let it go.)
Brian Wilson is such a complex person. I feel for him. What a great guy.

+amberlights1 Dennis used to step in and take beatings meant for Brian.
I did see an interview where Brian said he forgave his father. I don't think it was very long ago.
My thoughts!.. Sheesh.
And the Wilson couple moved to Oceanside, CA. after I knew them long ago.
whats patronizing is when interviewers ask softball questions or try to befriend the interviewee. this guys asking insightful questions that actually let you understand brian wilson the person. this interview isnt just about the music, but the life of the actual artist himself, now that hes old enough to look back on it. sure theres a line you dont cross but i dont think interviewer crossed it and mr wilson didnt look uncomfortable at all
exactly
It is such a shame that people can't be respectful
i do not jugde i hear you and feel your pain beleive me
How In the world
Do you Say your last name George?? Anywho I love Brian Wilson
No kidding!..lol..
Actually, although Murray damaged Brian pretty badly, Brian rarely brings up his father. It is usually the interviewers who bring him up.
@Okiemom50 Yeah, I know. Especially after sitting thru that obnoxious commercial.
Ah well.
What did you think of Jian Ghomeshi's interview with Brian Wilson?
@Desiree50able How do you know what his wife's motivations are?
Actually, Wikipedia spells the name MURRY!
Quincy Jones did not write one song for Michael. Check the credits on his albums.
LEAVE BRIAN ALONE!
...really though. Like these interviewers need to stop getting all up into his dark personal business. Just appreciate how great he is :-D
i went thru the same thing except my dad did it daily and never wrote music..every mule thinks his pack is the heaviest
He's neither. He was born and raised in Canada.
Of course the album credits SAY Whacko Jacko wrote them. Are you THAT naive? Jeez...
Think about it. How would Murray's brother know what went on in the privacy of their home. I definitely believe Brian. Also, there have been others who spoke of Murray's violence.
SuperFringy dude, they knew. You can’t keep something like that hidden from family for long!
What is this interviewer trying to do? For God's sake, leave this man alone with regard to the negativity he has lived through.
@kjetin99 thank you , that i how i feel
Brian has been having mental problems since 1964. If you knew is history, you would be amazed that he is even here today.
The Wilson boys wouldn’t have destroyed themselves if their father hadn’t tortured them.
😞
Cool the interviewer delves into his past. At the same time, does this dude think he's a shrink or something? You're talking to a legend man, show some respect....
I really don't like the way he talked to him...
really, what a dope
@devokillian yeah its kinda condescending. no shit he liked pretty music lol. dear interviewer, have you listened to pet sounds?
I completely agree. I'm sick and tired of hearing about papa Murry the beast. Actually, I read that Murry's father was even more of a terror and much more alcoholic. That was a real handicap for him.
The only counseling for the Boys, is to forgive Murry. Period. (Let it go.)
Der Glaetze TRUE!
sorry bout the spelling
Ah we'll we hope you accept our apology on this persons disrespectful behaviour
