I agree with one of the posters who said you don't buy the casio to read notifications. But not only that, I never actually scroll to read the messages. When a message arrives it flashes on the screen saying who sent you a message and from what platform. Then I can decide if I can be bothered to look at my phone or not. It is an incredibly useful feature for a watch that clearly doesn't have that as its priority. Oh, and I bought it a year ago and still haven't had to charge the battery ...

Hey Dave. Can you tell me if you can start the stopwatch by a single button press from the main screen? I love that feature on my rangeman. I was hoping you can use the run button to start the stopwatch immediately.

i dont care about notifications, but the navigation features like maps and trackback are what sells the garmin for me.

    Simply put:
    Garmin is extremely software-centric.
    Casio is extremely hardware-centric.
that's how I view the two brands.
I have been a long time Casio user, and last year I got introduced to a Garmin (instinct solar). My immediate response was: "Okay I want my Garmin Instinct in a Mudmaster form factor!"

@Radu - I agree, with you. You never buy a G-Shock to read messages, so you do not buy THIS watch, GBD-H1000. But if you ARE gonna buy a G-Shock that Casio wants to pass off as a Smart Watch, then yes....I believe the the complaints and recommendations in this video is appropriate and necessary. If you don't buy a G-Shock to read messages, you simply don't buy a GBD-H1000.
I think this watch is way overpriced for what it tries to be but clearly is not.

I owned an Apple Watch Gen 3 Nike edition, great watch, mainly use for cycling n daily walk/exercising. however the corner of the screen was cracked due to an accident after 6 months of purchase n I am still using it. Picking up this Gshock losing the beautiful colour display, all the fancy apps/ remote control of my iPhone etc. (Which I rarely use) What I gained over an Apple Watch is much longer battery life, solar powered, toughness of Gshock and don’t need to worry cracked screen. I am glad it can connect with Strava. That’s all I am asking for! Thank you Casio 🙏🏻🙏🏻 👍🏻👍🏻

For me it depends on your purpose, i have also owned some, like vivosmart HR, samaung gearfit 2, samsung gearfit 2 pro and a chinese fitness gear i forgot the name, the problem i see with these touch screens is the touch screen itself, all of my fitness watches screen failed after 2-3years of use, vibrations also play a role in your watches, i owned also Protreck 5312 and now i have casio GWN-1000, but i can see they are good and tough, if there will be ever a zombie apocalypse coming i rather lost all my gadgets but not my casio GWN-1000, batteries will run dry but not the Casio GWN-1000., for me it depends, i just love the solid and shock resist build of casios G masters, its a survival watch, end-of-the-world watch.

Just got the Casio GBD-H1000. thanks for the video. The Garmin is overpriced and looks like everyone's watch. 95% of the time you only look at the time. And the Casio looks cooler and is easier to see time. If size is too big, that is a personal taste issue. One thing to note...the notification issue David mentioned. I think accessing the notification via 9 presses is silly, but why bother? I only look at the notification as it comes in. If it interests me, THEN I retrieve my phone. Great if phone in pocket, backpack or in a meeting/dinner. Less offensive to glance at watch vs take out phone when with others....both a little rude, but watch is better. So far I like it, but wish it had more customizations. Like, I would like to change font of notifications...hard to see tiny font. I would like a separation between texts/emails. I get tons of emails, and really only want to see text notifications. May be able to configure that on phone app. Still learning. Also wish you could change amount of time notification stays on screen. 30 seconds seems long. Also, I think Garmin will come out with a new Fenix every year that is like $850+ making the previous version worth a lot less. I think Casio will come out with less hardware and more software updates. I also think the Casio will rarely need charging, whereas the Garmin will need it. If anything, the Garmin Instinct Tactical is a better comparison to the Casio GBD-H1000. For $400 the Casio is way cooler and more rugged. I have been a GShock/Protrek wearer for 30 years.

    Good review.
About the notifications its not a dealbreaker for me. Its healthy to be unplugged from the matrix ;)
I owned the Fenix 6 and did not like the map feature. It was a to small screen. I used it sometimes but in my region there are to fiew details. But the GPS was fast on the Fenix. That one I really liked. The music feature I did not like on Garmin. I am using Google play music and thats not working with Fenix. So that features was totaly useless. But mp3 worked ok. Not the best intuitiv function but was ok.
But I agree with an earlier post. The users have different needs. For strict sporting and some trecking I would go with the Fenix. But for "Survival" mode and extreme trecking and have the ability to sport I would go with the Casio.
The dealbreaking for me is the batterytime. And the ability to track positions is just a plus.

  • @alexbedini731
    @alexbedini731 3 года назад +5

They both are beasts, I own the exact same GBDH1000 you are showing here and you are right about the Notification flaw but on the other hand we all know we do not need to read the whole message on the watch screen to know what the notification is about let alone when you choose a tactical watch you do not choose it for work scenarios thus I do not think this should be considered a major flaw. Regarding the Software updates I have noticed around 4 of them since I have purchased mine, August 2020, maybe they are not as often as the Garmin's but they are not as rare as you might think. Last but not least I have seen it too in the beginning when it required around 4 minutes to acquire GPS fix but after the first time I got it for running it kept acquiring GPS fix much faster than that, very rarely it required again 4 minutes and I am afraid that happens if you change the GPS settings on the mobile app. Finally I would like to thank you for this video as it provides the main differences between these two watches objectively and in an unbiased way!! Keep it up!!

It is also important to mention that the Casio measures caloric expenditure based on the accelerometer, and not based on the heart rate, which makes it an absolutely useless heart rate monitor for indoor activities or in which there is no movement with cadence, such as a stationary bike. , outdoor cycling, Spinning, Crossfit, etc. This has been talked about in many forums of Watches and Sports, however Casio continues to sell this watch as ideal for the gym, when precisely for Indoor activities it is useless

    b) How to reset step tracker? Probably as a part of delivery it has counted 30K steps already before it even arrived to me
    c) Does the GPS track only during run? Any other mode during which it can track?
    d) The GPS did not track my full route. Only a part in between. At least during the second part, the battery showed low.
    e) What is the lowest temperature it can handle?

Think your review is based more on an urban usage than a camping/hiking usage. In rural Minnesota most of our state parks and hiking trails have very spotty to no cell reception at all, or very dependant on which cell carrier you have, so notifications are completely irrelevant, and stand alone GPS capability (no phone) would be more helpful.... I.E. my Casio protreck has downloadable maps for when offline.

The Gshock here and the Rangeman are actual watches with “smart” features. The Fenix 6 is a “smart watch.”
The Gshock will still be viable in 5 years. The Fenix will not.
Hopefully a more polished version of this Gshock is released with the missing features of the rangeman watch.

    • @borisdusanic8384

Does everything except for last forever and hold its value. As for the solar charging, the garmin will never be able to match the casio because the garmin are much less power efficient since they run a full fledged OS and resource heavy display as well as functions and internal hardware, a solar powered fenix will only be a slight aid compared to a solar powered instinct or casio.

It looks like G - Shock is still not liked by the non - watch enthusiast crowd and that makes me happy.
From my perspective - I loathe a noisy tech on my wrist - I tried and got rid of this really fast. I am a WIS so smart - watches have 0 value or pragmatism for my needs.
I hope Casio will stop this endeavor and leave the smart watches to the already established brands/makes.
