Thanks for the comparison! I'm presently trying to determine how much water I am actually giving my lawn as well. Thirty minutes is putting down approximately 1/4 inch via my in ground sprinkler system using a tuna can.

Absolutely. Lucky for me it has started raining again here but now I know how much to put down on each watering when I have to run the irrigation. It makes a big difference. Thanks for the comment and watching. Good luck with your lawn this summer!

I placed tuna cans on my lawn and put my water sprinklers on for 30 minutes and they are half way full so does that mean I only have to water my lawn for twice a week.

@@angelf9800 if you are going for 1 inch total yes. Make sure to check all zones as there can be big differences

Could I use sardine cans ?

Well I suppose you could if you prefer them to tuna, lol. Only thing I would make sure of is the straight sides. People also use coffee cups but if you use something with a curved edge it may not be accurate. Thanks for the question and good luck in your lawn this season.

I do not think the cans or cups work well for rotary sprinklers, especially using the high flow nozzles (5/8 gpm) since the water comes from the side and does not drop straight down. Think a cheap moisture meter is more accurate!

I will trust them for now. The moisture meter is a great tool to have around also. Just picked one up a while back. Great suggestion, thanks for commenting and good luck this summer!

@@lanieroutside agree cans seem to work ok 99% of the time!

This is why I would use a tuna can over the yellow clear meters, the tuna can is wide enough to capture almost any water in a zone as gravity will get water to fall enough as it gets over the first side of the can but not over the far side. Any water going fast enough to not fall in the can is also not going to be reaching that part of the lawn.
The other thing is you cluster some in a similar area and you average them together.
