- Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 48 years, shows how you can fix the trouble code P0455 when the evap system has a large leak. It's not always a bad gas cap as many have found out.

Scotty Kilmer do you know where the Purge Valve for a 2015 Mustang Ecoboost? I can't find the info anywhere on the Internet!
Hey Scotty! Your videos are a huge help to me. I Hyundai accent with a P455 I found that my charcoal canister purge valve in the back is failing intermittently. I ordered a replacement but it only has an inlet and slap filter with no outlet to connect to my charcoal canister. If I bypass my charcoal canister, what might that do? Would that be a problem? THANK YOU SO MUCH SCOTTY!
***and small foam filter***
Scotty Kilmer I hear a hissing sound coming from the right rear tire but my tire is fine.
I think the fuel filler neck is a common problem with the evap codes also. These tubes from the gas cap to the gas tank often develop rust and leak. Changed my solenoids for cheap and finally found the leak in my fuel filler neck.
Small or large EVAP leak needs a flow chart for checking.
- gas cap, is it tight? if not tighten it
- is there rust on the filler neck where the gas cap is supposed to snug? If yes, clean it up with emery cloth.
- try replacing the gas cap.
- etc.
If my vehicle code is reading P0455 and says large evap leak, and now when I push of the accelerator it's moves about 5 mph so I have to shut it off and wait a few mins, then turn it back on for full power. .. did u have this symptom from the gas cap ? Thanks
@@cmccorkle4377 No, it didn't. But gas cap is the easiest/cheapest to try. This sounds like such a large leak, gas isn't making it to the carburetor. Mine drove me nuts, turned out to be cracked fuel pump. Buried in the trunk under mat/spare tire, apparently none of the SOBs working on the car, over 3 years, didn't bother to check that.
Went ahead and did as you suggest and moving on to change the EVAP vent valve next, thank you Scotty you help real world people and enjoy doing it God bless you !
Thanks Scotty, I can't tell you how many times you post a video of just my current issue. It's a talent, your timing!
Saving people money, you're a cool dude!
This guy is golden!!
Thanks Scotty! I tried a new gas cap and a new purge solenoid, but still getting the EVAP leak code, so this is my next thing to try!
Did it work?
@@Primifyy nope! and I still have that problem haha. I think it might be a small leak in the fuel line because it looks a little wet in a certain spot.
@@micahg2242 damn so it doesn’t really damage the engine I guess ? Nothing major?
@@Primifyy nothing major. everything has been running great I just have a check engine light and a small evap leak code that I want to go away
Lots of useful info in 3 minutes or less. Perfect for all the short attention span viewers like me. Thanks, Scotty. You totally get it.
Scotty thank you for informative videos, being on a tight budget your information is a life saver. God bless, keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! The wife's care has this code and when I checked the gas gap was not tight. Thank you thank you thank you!!
I have that code on my Camaro right now, no performance or gas mileage issues, but thanks for the info. Now I know where to fix next.
Me too my gas cap always pop up I’m going to Walmart and change my gas cap
thanks scotty i also have a p0456 on my honda element so i was gonna change the vent valve but went ahead got a great deal on the whole charcoal canister with the vent valve and purge solenid already setup with it so i gonna just replace the whole so i dont have to do back in to fiddle with it later thanks scotty great work
yet another reason why it's good to live in a state that does not require emissions testing!
It may not be required but your car will throw an engine code regardless and has to be dealt with.
thank you!!! I was about to write you about this issue with our 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab
chevy decided to re-engineer this part...Dealer wants $180 for the part alone...I bought the original crappy engineered part for $17 lol...and to think with all that bailout money they wouldn't bend us over anymore? Money is the only reason this world is poop.
What van do you see for 100k? it must have a viper engine in it or something
And people wonder why import cars have a strong hold here in the US. Ford decided that on a good idea with their explorers between 2008-2012 that if the clock spring or anything small goes bad or broken in the steering column to make it all part of the steering column so you have to pay $800 for a whole new steering column. Makes you wonder why every other car out there is a hyundai, honda, or toyota.
That's what junk yards are for, cheap and recyclable parts. Ford isn't in the business of making money on parts. After 10yrs most non critical parts are discontinued. That's where the aftermarket takes over if there is a high enough demand for it.
Is $300 too much for a mechanic to charge
Believe it or not some call that capitalism. 😐
Hes probably the most usefull texan if ever seen
HAHAHA!!!! Good one!
True enough.
Not sure if that's a compliment or a put-down...but he sure is useful!
You know he's Canadian right?
Lol
Scotty i just wanna say youre the Man. good to see a mechanic that loves his profession
I think he said in a previous video that when he got it it had been sitting for years and wouldn't start. He said the owner was amazed he even got it running again.
Thanks again, Scotty! I shall try these tricks with my 2003 Jeep Gr. Cherokee. I'm tired of seeing that Check Engine light and besides which, it needs to pass NJ emissions test next month. I better get cracking on replacing the usual suspects. Also - you might want to mention to other folks that split or defective air line hoses can cause this P0455 code to rear its ugly head. Those are fairly cheap fixes, too.
my favite mechanic .
Scotty, do ya mind if i call you scotty pimpin? You’re a legend man, we all appreciate you
Scary, I got this code today and then you upload this video. It happened before with another video. The car said a few days before: "Check Fuel Cap" after filling gas tank so it must be the cap :D
not always, that's a generic code and often something else is leaking
It's a very generic code...my brothers car had that code last yr and the mechanic said it could be numerous things and he fixed what he thought it could be and he road tested it for 15 miles and check engine light didn't come back on so he gave it an emissions sticker but on the 1 mile road home the check engine light back on and it was the same code but we had the sticker so he kept driving it till it died 11 months later
I just fixed this problem on a late '90s Mustang. Evap leak. It was a rotted rubber hose on top of the gas tank, had to drop the tank to replace it.
Yeah, I noticed there was no longer any suction when removing the gas cap at the pump. Went straight for a new cap, but it didn't fix it. I'll try this one next time I get a chance.
Funny thing is the videos I've seen regarding this issue are all on Nissans and I have one as well.
man you been saving me so much money
How ironic. My friends check engine light came on. He has a '05 Honda Civic LX Special Edition. He had that piece replaced,I forgot that the gas cap could cause that. Linked this video to him since it explains this very well and he is not a car guy. Scotty and Eric are 2 of my favorite RUclips go to mechanics
Thanks Scotty. This code came on tonight. I'll buy a new part tomorrow.
The Evan system was a real pain to relocate on my s10 bagged project. Gotta keep it legal though
Hi Scotty, I have been maintaining my wife's car with your help. I have years of mechanical training BUT, I'm in your age group, so New Tech cars , with All those codes, you helped.
Now I just hade a 455 code on her car , 2005 XG350 Sport Hyundai, I looked and I was able to remove the canister. BUT ! 2 things , !- valve was open when I blew through it, I'm guessing it should be closed, 2 One of hoes lines rusted right off, the pipe that fed the cannister is gone, . Question , Can i find, and fish a hose up to where it's coming from?. Left side (drivers) seems to go through wheel well and trunk. The rest of the hoses which look like the ones from gas tank filler nozzle, look ok. Thanks for your help. Elliot
Thanks Scotty this video was a great help for my 05 Altima.
A smoke test revealed a leak from the top of the gas tank. Maybe from a valve in the tank. Gotta take the tank down to determine exactly where it's coming from. Might have to replace the whole fuel tank. It's getting really expensive.
scotty kilmer....you rock man.....from big Robbo ..perth australia
Holy shit that's my brothers car. I know because that bumper sticker he ran that marathon in Houston last year
lol its amazing how world is small :)
I have the same car and the same bumper sticker by the way, it’s my car
Stop fucking lying kid
This is my car! Lol.
This is my car too!
Thanks Scotty! I just replaced the evap valve on my Golf GTi. Problem fixed.
Going to need to read up on this for my car... Been getting a couple of these EVAP codes over the last few years... Swapping caps seemed to help but not any more... Suppose if it's an easy fix, probably going to cost less then having someone test the system, find a dozen other potential problems, or waste time looking for other bad seals or cracks.
FINALLY(!) decided after all these months (years) to try replacing the Valve last night. It was so simple (even simpler then I expected, as some people with my model car need to unbolt/move the EVAP Canister slightly to remove/replace the valve.) I should have done it long ago. (Or last year even when I replaced my Fuel Filter and spent a lot of time in the same area under the Car) Now it's just a waiting game to see if the code(s) come back. Was able to "test" the Valve to see if it has "failed". Applying 12 volts to it shows it will open/close "properly"(?)... But now at almost 20 years old... as suggested in the Video it might have degraded some and not be seating/sealing correctly or some other fault(s)...
man i hope this fixes my problem, thanks Scotty !
@Scotty Kilmer do i need to clear the code after replacing or does it go away if the problem is fixed ?
Scotty, saving my car yet again
I revved up my engine and now its got a knock thanks scotty =)
Excellent quick snappy helpful entertaining well filmed video easy to listen to and follow - as usual!
found this to be a direct and helpful video
Your heaven sent Mr. Kilmer.. thank you..!..
thank you!! I have this same Nissan Altima, same trim color and everything
You covered great points.
Dude you are amazing! Thanks for doing what you do!
I kept getting a large evap leak code p0455 on my 05 Ram . I replaced the gas cap the purge valve and leak detection pump before I made an interesting discovery. The check engine light only comes on when the gas gets below half a tank. I don't think I have a leak at all just a code when the tank pressure is low. So I just keep the tank above half a tank. So far it's working. Lol Dodges.
You can test them with a handheld vacuum pump and multi-meter. Should be holding vacuum while not energized then once you introduce 12v its releases the pressure. if it doesn't hold pressure... then Its bad or doesn't actuate the solenoid, It's bad
I was told u may help diagnose a car an that u are very knowledgeable I can't get anyone that knows what is going on with car I was told u would
Hi Scotty just replaced min on my 04 mob Mazda. dealer wanted to change it for $400 plus dollars. I looked it up and fixed myself (part cost $119.00 online)
evap leak is a pretty common problem on the altimas
Can it cause engine misfire as well? I first got the P0455 code and now I got the P0301. The engine misfires when the engine's on, gear drive, and the car fully stopped pressing on the breaks. Would this indicate bad ignition coils on top of a bad vapor valve? Thanks. Hopefully you can answer.
And Hyundai sonata as well
tiki5050 I had the same problem no evap doesn’t cause a misfire a misfire is most likely caused by the ignition coil or the spark plugs or both
And sentras
Great help to my Scotty. thank you for the second time so far!
Thank you. This helped a lot and will save me from taking to my mechanic
Scotty is saving me money
Scotty moonlights as the bass player in the Cleverlys!
Dude, I wish you lived next door to me. You would be a great neighbor.
Scotty do you have toyota corolla purge solenoid replacement video??? I can't find video on this. Thanks! "Vacuum Switch Valve Purge Solenoid for Toyota" video needed :)
I just had this code on my 1998 4cyl Ranger. Turned out to be the purge valve under the hood, so it's not always the vent valve at first. I just happen to go with my gut and changed that purge valve first. BTW my truck only has 68K miles and this went bad already.
Hi Scotty! Can you do a video on servicing a CVT transmission?
SMO222 Servicing a cvt is different on different cars.
Easy answer... You DON'T service CVT. It's generally all one unit. and it's a pain to handle. That's why I have a 2014 nissan sentra with a bad CVT sitting pretty in my yard while I drive a 2001 mercury sable.
Scotty, I had the same code a couple years ago. Ended up being the filler neck, had holes in it i guess.
YOUR THE FUCKIN MAN SCOTTY DONT NEED TO GO TO MECHANIC SCHOOL WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS. YOU HAVE HELPED ME FIX MY CAR SO MANY TIMES
had something similar, but i had the gas filler neck chipped from the rim.
just bought the part for 60 bucks new. got myself a a wrench, screwdrivers and a ratchet. removed the old part and installed the new one, due to being a noob mechanic took me about 2 hours to replace it drove the car for 10 minutes stop and checked for leaks. drove for another 30 minutes and the light went off, the smell stood there for the rest of the day but next day the gas smell was completly gone and my mpg increased by 30-50 miles per tank it already paid itself with a matter for months spent maybe 75 with taxes for everything had to buy 2 hose clamps and new screws to hold the gas neck my old ones rusted out.
I'm getting a blinking Monitor icon, "EV", yellow LED indicator light, No DTC's presently stored in code reader's memory. Also, NO Engine light is presently showing on dashboard. I'm not a 100-mile guy at age 75, so it takes me a while to travel around town (don't travel) until a cycle is reached. It's been since May when a part was changed, and codes cleared.
hey Scotty, thanks for making these videos! I have a 2006 kia optima ex v6 that had a P0451 evap emmisions CEL...I changed the gas cap gasket, cleared the code and it came back. I also noticed my power steering fluid was low, so I topped it off and the P0451 CEL went away without me doing ANYTHING else...I find it hard to believe the two are related but I did recently read an article that said a power steering problem or leak could be a symptom of the P0451 CEL????
what the heck is going on? if the light comes back, I'll replace this valve. thanks for any insights!
Power steering fluid also feeds the master slave cylinder in Ford rangers at least
Thank you Scotty! You always have my answer.
muy buen mecanico gracias Very good mechanic Thank you
amazing value video Scotty
SCOTTY YOU'RE AWESOME THANK YOU!
My Nissan Pathfinder 07 I just bought has a large leak,I will give it a try.
hey scotty, I'm 13 and really interested in becoming a mechanic. I have a question for you; did you take auto tech or anything like that in college? Thanks.
no, I learned from my grandpa the mechanic and just pick things up easily.
Pingu The Game Playin' Penguin I'm 16 and I've been looking into becoming a mechanic aswell, in my high school they offer automotive classes which I will be taking next semester. I looked into UTI a college to become a mechanic, I talked to them and asked for all the requirements, they said basically all I needed was a hs diploma a some experience with automobiles.
+thegamingchicken Thanks!
No problem, and good luck!
im thinking about uti but its expensive and isnt garaunteed to get you a real life job
I am 3 years late but tks for the video lol
But Evap vent valves are generally always venting except when the PCM runs the monitor/self test to check for leaks!
Hey Scotty love the vids man. I got a 2005 chevy equinox. Past few months I have had the p0455 code. Tried a few caps. Still coming back. Also I hear a popping noise. Not sure if it's the same thing. My mechanic did a smoke test on it and swears it's the gas cap. Put even a new ac Delco cap on it same thing. You think maybe it's some random weird stuff with the valve.
I replace the the gas cap but light came back on
Great advice Mr Scotty, thank you sir.
Fixed this exact issue on a 2005 Bentley...(my thinking was it was a car which consumed a lot of fuel hence the petrol cap was off a lot)
hey scotty! Thanks for existing!
Hey Scotty, I have a 2013 Ford Edge with the P0455 code. I like your idea of checking the gas cap first however the edge now has a cap less gas tank. Any suggestions?
You sir.... are the MAN!
the mechanic did a smoke test and the smoke is coming from the gas cap even with a new cap. it still has an evap leak code of 0455...what do you recommend?
2006 Lexus gs 300 changed the purge valve assembly but when the engine is hot I removed the line that goes to the charcoal canister and there is no feeling of vacuum at the valve inlet. Not sure if that is normal or not. Trouble finding a gas cap that seems to fit. Might have to go to the dealer...ugh!!
Dude you’re a legend
A $3 laser pointer would make your videos considerably better
Hi Scotty,
Great vid. Im getting the issue where when Im pumping gas the gas pump handles keeps clicking off. I saw your video on this issue with the celica but am i just better of replacing the evap valve as in this video? Thanks.
Good to watch for. My granddaughter had this code and an inefficient cat code. A shop told her they would fix it for $850. She brought it me and I put a $9 gas cap on it and cleared the codes. That was a year ago. Hasn't come back. Watch out for crooks.
great vid, thanks Scotty!
Thank God my Evap valve is located right on top, beside the engine on my 08 CTS
super helpful thank you scotty
Fire as always
Hi Scotty. I am leaving for boot camp soon, I was wondering what what I should do to get my car ready to sit for a couple months.
just fill it up with gas and put air in the tires, two months is nothing
Thanks Scotty!
thanks scotty
sucks a lot of new cars don't even have gas caps anymore but small doors that's the fueling nozzle opens... I heard those can be a pain to fix when they break
I just got a used car this year and it is the first one I ever had without a fuel cap.
the mechanic did all the replacement of all parts but ok ill take it to the dealer thanks!!
Where did you get the control valve from and how much was it?
Hi Scotty love your work, should I use flush on an engine that sat for 5 years without an oil change, runs great, oils looks good but smells of gas,
just change the oil, flushing can damage stuff, only do that with real cruddy oil.
Thanks Scotty, got confident after watching your Vids and did my first oil job, fantastic, now more tools, with the money saved, life changing.
Thanks again Scotty.
Just replaced my fuel pump for my 2014 Raptor, next day I got a the code evap leak ( large leak) was a bit concerned I hope it’s just a canister purge valve replacement , since the raptor doesn’t have a Gas cap
According to my mechanic, the valve is okay-it’s the sensor that needs to be changed. Is that an easy fix for a non-skilled person to do?
I have P0455 tacoma. i smell gas in the cabin means its not the gas cap. Right? Thank you!!!
Thanks Scotty!!
hi Scotty what do you think of a 1992 Mazda Miata 5speed manual
fun little cars
BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! Nothing beats the cheap ass Miata life!
TheZProtocol OK thanks
mine was the purge solenoid
