This brings back a humorous memory. I had the role of "The Prince" in a production of "Nutcracker" at the University of Guam auditorium back in 1986. I was watching from behind a leg of the curtain, when suddenly amongst the snowflakes being sprinkled from the catwalk a much larger object fell and plopped on the stage. The dancing snowflakes kept up their dance undeterred while booting the object around like a hacky-sack off their toeshoes. It turned out to be a hardpack of Marlborough cigarettes that had dropped from the stagehands breast pocket. I lost it, but the procenium and curtains concealed my laughter.
I’m an ex classical dancer, I can’t describe how you guys moved me. I’ve got tears in my eyes. Simply beautiful! We need these kind of things in these hard times
My grandfather lost his parents in the pandemic more than 100 years ago and he and his brother were orphaned and living on the streets near where this was filmed. He introduced me to this ballet when I was a small child and it's been my favorite ever since. I think he would be so awestruck and moved to tears if he could see this beautiful performance now. My awe and tears are from both of us. Bravo!
A few friends and I were riding our bikes when we stumbled upon the rehearsal for this, it was mesmerizing! So amazing to see how the dancers and choreographers envisioned this piece being viewed. Absolutely beautiful!
@@valentinamestroni9679 it says Alameda, CA in the credits. As for the parking lot location, I'm not sure. It was good to see some blue sky, though. What a treat to watch!!
What captivated me was the incredible diversity in all the dancers! That is the real message of this amazing performance! Bravo!! And keep bringing more!!!
This is how our country and world should be. A collection of different people, histories, and experience all dancing life together in peace and beauty.
Just beautiful! I LOVE the "stage." This was one of the most accessible ballet performances I have seen in a long time. Creative and fluid and transports one to a different space. Bravo!! Encore!
This brought me to tears from the concept and casting, Location, cinematography, and hybrid choreography (and music, always!). Honestly it’s something I’ve been waiting for. I adore and have supported or participated in ballet since I was little but have felt it somewhat of a stagnant or stale form; no real breakthroughs on a public consumption level. This year has been so hard for so many, but forced some amazing reinvention. This is the perfect metaphor.
Well said. Lifelong ballet lover and former dancer here. This moved me to tears. Thank you for giving those of us stuck at home a way to keep the Christmas tradition alive 🎄❤️🥂
Beautifully put. It’s been said that necessity is the mother of invention. While watching this I found myself hoping that as things go back more towards a pre-pandemic normal, we maintain this kind of ingenuity. I watched the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s livestream this year and found myself hoping the same thing: that TSO continues doing a livestream every year, even when they can be out on tour. Make the Arts more accessible to more people in more ways. That would be a win-win. 👏🏻🎁💖
If f anyone ever was to Take the entire ballet could you imagine the moment Clara/Marie and the Nutcracker prince move from her home to the land of sweets that they'd move through the open space like this as part of it? Maybe even the "sleigh" could take them to a plane where they end the scene with the next being in the land of Sweets!
I love everything about this. Isn't this so this year - everything is turned upside down and isn't what we've known it to be. Strip the darkened theater, stage lights, theatrical woodland backdrop and "snow". Instead, a concrete lot in sunny California with the SF skyline. Several thoughts....the plain white and tulle skirts give a sense of heavenly attire and brings to mind the many beautiful souls who we've lost this year. Also...I've seen many young dance students take their performances outdoors this year to empty parking lots. I'm touched by the perseverance of the human spirit to push on and continue to create and express because we must.
I've been accused of having tutus on the brain (overall prefer ballet to other dance forms) but like Martha Bader below (or above?) I am in tears, this was so good! Parts were reminiscent of Balanchine (he uses steps a 1st year student would have learned, but his use of the space is unparalleled). I usually feel the best way to film dance is just to face the camera squarely toward the stage and push "go." In this perf, it's like the camera was part of the choreography. And I can't believe how full out everyone is dancing considering you're on cement. Even my husband (not a ballet enthusiast) was commenting favorably. Such positive energy to wake up to going into holidays in the Year From Hell. More! More!
What Sudden Joy is this? This video caught me so by surprise. It’s GLORIOUS ❣️ The outdoors concept, seeing this gorgeous movement in a utilitarian setting, with the wide open skies. Bravos to all! The dancers, the choreographer, and omg...the film crew and the film editor. Anyone overlooked? Thank you all. I am keeping this close. ❤️
Bravo! Being from Canada, I think I am qualified to confirm that this was an absolutely spot on rendition of what snowflakes are like. Each and everyone of these unique and beautiful dancing snowflakes brought joy. I applaud and thank these amazing dancers for sharing their grace, artistry and talent. Hope is a seed. Let’s all plant it together. Stay safe, stay beautiful.
Watching for the fourth time and still delighted. Thoughtful camera work makes us participants rather than mere observers. Inclusive on so many dimensions. Joy to the world, given and received.
My one year old son watched this completely enthralled. It was his first time watching ballet, I am sure it will not be his last. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful performance, everyone involved is so talented!
Ugliness is everywhere and is easy to achieve. Beauty is rare and is difficult to achieve. This is why the work shown here is all the more remarkable and inspiring given these troubled times.
Gorgeous choreography combined with beautiful cinematography! And the skyline of the city is a wonderful backdrop to the beautiful dancers. I love everything about this!
Thank you. Such a lovely treat to see the ' Waltz of The Snowflakes' . As a child, 'The Nutcracker ' was an annual event, now in my 70's to see this preformed when our world is devastated with the Covid pandemic is as joyful as it was when I was a child.
Got chills the moment the camera panned to the dancers, and squealed and cheered through the whole thing. The turns and jetés were crisp and clean and there was so much life and joy conveyed in this dance. Y’all are amazingly talented and I’m still in awe. It brought tears to my eyes reminding me of my beloved aunt (may she rest in peace) who would send tapes and then dvds of nutcracker performances from a ballet company she was assistant director of(?) when she lived in upstate NY. They were a Chanukah present from her, and I miss getting them in the mail to this day. Thank you.
