    Captains log - Day 8:
Productivity has dropped to zero. The dirt pile behind the shop is all but gone after 1000s of climbs over it. Seth has now set up camp on top of one of the bikes. All hope is lost.

This IS how I define a motorcycle..... lmao, the 1st bike I remember seeing in my like was in 1968-70 that I saw
750four on it's side. I was allowed to revv the bike & I was about 8-9 as I remember. The gas tanks were almost
level w/ the seat, not exactly but not bulging or protruding out/up ~ just kinda a straight line from seat to bars.
What's really kool is finding them & finding them in reasonable good shape. Any deterioration would mean I'm
not able to fix it but you my friend, can do it so I love watching it..... happy holiday season. peace & GB

Great wee bikes, my first bike was a 76 TS250M I traded it after two yesrs for a 79 XL185s. The XL was a great trail bike, a generational improvement over the road biased TS which was a competent back road scratcher even on Japanese trail tyres.

It went 140' down the canyon, when they winched it up the next day it started on the second kick as always and they rode it back to camp. All it needed was new shock tube's and it was as good as the day I got it.

The XL series by Honda in the 80s was some of their most well engineered bikes. They used that small cc engine design in the atc also. I've owned and worked on the 600s, 500s, 350s, 200s. Never had a 185 but I got a 125 atc running for my step father in law on a visit to Texas. It had sat in his barn for at least 10 years and after about 1 hour of cleaning the carb and tank, it started and ran just like a honda should. Bulletproof machines. Nothing fancy, just reliable as an anvil.

Bought a 81cb250rs a few months ago, which was parked for more than 15 years.
Cleaned the carb, put new fuel in, and after 4 kicks she lived.
Found a 82 xl500r one month ago, and the same story.

It was winter in Northern Canada and the Instructor stood on the stairs under the awning smoking a cigarette. The test was: "If you make it around the block before I finish my cig, you pass. If I finish my smoke or have to come look for you, you fail. Good luck!" I passed and had great times until the heart achingly siren song beauty of the brand new (1980) CB400T Hawk showed up in the Dealer's shop window, lol.

I brought it home and was checking on what I'd need to order and I hooked up a jump box to make sure the starter and lights (The ones he hadn't sold) were working. I hit the key to check the starter and it ran. Sure wasn't expecting that.

When I was 15 years old I was staying at my cousins for the summer (70's & 80's we spent a lot of time with our cousins) I bought one of these bikes for $100 ! The only problem was when you tried to kick it over it wouldn't turn over because the piston was coming in contact with a open valve. It jumped the timing chain.. Long story short I rebuilt it myself at 15 with no manual only genuine Honda replacement parts. I had no clue on timing it. I remember having it on the bench and kicking it over by hand many many times moving the chain one notch at a time until the piston no longer interfered with the valves. First start I couldn't get it started with the kick so I rolled down the laneway and bump started it and drove it for two summers until I parked it at my cousins place.. It still sitting there today..

What a fun video. I always at least try to start and run every honda before doing anything. It's surprising how often they just work. Bonus, cameo from an old highschool friend of mine!

I bought the same bike new to ride back/forth to work. I think I paid $600ish for it new and it was a leftover or they wanted to move it. I later got a car and parked it. Got it running again a decade or so later and played with it for a short while. I practically gave it away when moving to a new house and have regretted it ever since. I also found for back then exact parts bike. I needed a fender and seat for mine due to my Newfoundland pup chewing them off mine lol.

I scored a motor for one of these back in the late '80s and stuck it in a CG 125 with a braced frame and swinging arm and a CD 175 forks and front wheel. Went very well indeed. Motor fits right in, but the CG frame and forks are a bit 'flexible' if left standard.

The way the second one was running, it almost sounds like the main jet fell out. My friend's dad bought him a brand new 1981 XL185S. In a very short time, that bike looked like that parts bike. lol. Bent, broken turn signals, broken mirror(s), dented tank etc. No respect for machinery or the fact it was a gift from his dad. I had a '79 street legal cammed and piped XR185 at the time. Looking forward to seeing what you guys do with these bikes. 🙂

I'm thinking it may be the carb to manifold oring leaking after reviewing the footage. We will find out though!

Great video! I enjoy most of your stuff but the simplicity of just picking up some old bikes and out of nowhere one just goes and you can see the excitment. You cant fake happiness like that. Keep up the good work and I hope you have half as much fun making the videos and I do watching them.

Awesome bikes. I would love to see you guys do some sort of off-road or dual sport trip/challenge with these at some point. Let the good times roll!

Sick, just saw the part where you say you want to do a 100 mile adv trip on them. Milk these bikes for all their worth IMO! Shoot, make a whole video series of different rides on these if you continue to enjoy them to this extent!

Back in the day I used to have the 250 version of this bike. It was virtually bulletproof.
