Why I spent £40K+ to Make My PERFECT 964 - Then Still Decided to Sell

  • MY Porsche 964 was the car that really started my passion for aircooled 911s. I spent years and over £40000 making it my own and yet in the end I still decided to sell it. Why? Cup spec engine, Trick suspension, Carbon bonnet.. too many modifications to mention.

      you are not- in Germany you only can get the "historic" benefits when the car is unmodified or has time appropriate modifications.. so 90% of classic cars are close to stock. This includes having a original color scheme, can't put modern seats in the car, engine swaps are only possible between cars of the same series..... I think the rules are a bit too much.. but I also thinks that most peoples modifications are not an improvement...

    *I'd wanted a 911 for 30 years but just never had the cash. Missed out on some peaches too, like the 1969 911 Sport 2.4 SWB that was just £7K! In fact that was the first 911 I ever drove thanks to Henry of Eagle E-type fame. I used to visit his workshops monthly and drool over his stock. He was such a nice guy and never once moaned about my being there even though I was clearly skint. Anyway, I finally got my own 911 a month or so ago. It's only a 996 C2 but it's manual, non sunroof and the 3.6 has enough grunt to be great fun. My plan is to add lightness, a rear cage and race seats once I'm slim enough to fit in the bloody things! As for this Porsche 964 I find it strange why you remove one of the best inventions for improved road holding, 4-wheel drive, from a car with a rear mounted engine, which would benefit immensely from exactly this. And you have experienced, first hand, the inherent instability of rear wheel drive and rear mounted engine! I have owned and driven several 4-wheel drive cars, and the road holding is really exceptional.

    I am continually amazed at the cost of things for 911s, and other Euro enthusiast cars. Here in the US, Matt Farrah of 'The Smoking Tire' spent $18,000 / ~13,200 pounds on a basic 'ring and valve' refresh for an air-cooled 911 that was also smoking at around 100k miles. No re-bore, no new pistons, no bearings. Just new rings, a little cylinder honing, new valves, seats, and seals.
    In contrast, the 175k mile small-block Chevy engine in my 1988 Corvette was professionally rebuilt with fresh bores, pistons, rings, bearings, valves/seats, all the necessary machine work, and a mild cam for a total of $3,000 US / ~2,200 pounds. Further, should the normally bulletproof T-10 transmission need a refresh, I could do it myself for about $500 /~365 pounds in parts (everything except shafts and gears), or I could buy a used one for maybe half that.
    Porsches are cool and all, but damn! I just don't see why an engine that needs refreshing at 100k miles, and that isn't exactly exotic, should cost so much. And 5,000 pounds / ~$6,800 seems wildly excessive for an unremarkable used gearbox. Porsche people will try to justify these things, but I remain unconvinced.

      I have driven a beautiful 964 Turbo on some magnificent Appalachian Mountain roads. I don't fault the car's character at all. In fact, the earlier the 911, the better for my taste. But with no electronic nannies, I did have to treat the power surge of the big single-turbo with utmost respect. Compared to my BMW e28 M5, the Porsche was a real handful. I would have preferred a normally aspirated 911 for anything except track use.
      My issue is with the cost of participation, which I find unreasonable for the technologies and production numbers involved. The air-cooled 911 has become a transcendent icon -- I get that. But those air-cooled cars were simple, straightforward, and produced in large numbers over many years.
      There was nothing exotic about the engine or gearbox at all, for example. While the quality of its coachwork and general construction was typically German, it was no more sophisticated than a contemporary Corvette in any meaningful technical way.
      Corvette did benefit from the sheer number of small-block Chevy engines and T-10 manual transmissions produced overall, so some cost difference is reasonable. But apparently the 5.7L Chevy V8 also outlasts the Porsche 2.0L to 3.2L Flat-Six between rebuilds, despite being only about ~10% as costly to fully overhaul. Same for the gearbox.
      That's all a bit difficult to accept, even though I understand why and how it has happened.

      @@claudiomarangone614 yup. Used to own a 996.2 gt3, purchased from a 911 specialist in the uk. Coming from a 360, I felt the whole thing was underwhelming. I only started watching Jack’s channel from when he purchased the Influenzo and haven’t delved too much into his back catalogue. Consequently I had no idea why the Channel is called Number 27. I guessed it was his house number at some point ! Now I know. “Number 27” looks much cleaner for all the cosmetic tweaking but on the whole I think I prefer the Cobalt Blue (27) colour. The Influenzo is much more interesting to me nevertheless 👍

    The driving appeal of a 911 is traction out of corners. Weight transfer under acceleration of a rear engine car is addictive. Also, limited weight transfer under braking is a plus. Having said that, everything else is archaic.

    Hi Jack
    Just curious, I have a beautiful 964 that I garage away from the house, but sometimes it just gets caught in the rain for a few days.
    A lot of people say not to cover the car outside however I have a custom fit cover that doesn’t seem to leave moisture underneath and protects from sun damage/ birds etc, soft inside. I do try to take off when there is no sign of rain
    What are thoughts on outdoor car covers for a 1990 Porsche?

    Hi Jack, I’m an ex-Porsche technician, I’ve worked on lots of 964’s, obviously improved over the G-Series but… non stop oil leaks, non stop engine rebuilds ( and what you said that all cars require rebuilds is completely untrue), failing dual mass flywheels, failing DME relays etc etc
    I can appreciate and respect you enthusiasm but the amount of money spent is OTT

    I switched from an Elise to a 964 C2 for a year or so after my daughter was born 18 -odd years ago, because I saw another dad had a child seat in his! It felt dated even then and after I scared myself to death by hitting standing water coming off a roundabout I never trusted myself with it again. You need to be a better driver than me to get the best from it, so I sold it and went back to hot hatches

    Jack - I get that the 964 isn’t the right car for you and admire that you were able to part with it after investing so much effort in modifying it. I’m surprised that you have only £40K into it. I have significantly more into mine, but I don’t have your mechanical skill and so didn’t do the work myself.
    Like yours, my 964 is modified for performance / driver engagement, but certainly not a full on track car. We modified it at 186K miles and the engine was still strong - with proper maintenance, German engineering is incredible. We put KW Onix V3 coil overs on my car, the ride is a bit stiffer than stock, but it’s certainly not uncomfortable - it really depends on how you adjust them. I find the Recaro seats I have in the car now more comfortable than stock because they hold me in place almost caressingly.
    Certainly taste in a car on track is a matter of personal preference, but I find there is nothing quite like the feeling of pinning the car to the tarmac with the right balance of steering lock, and front rear weight balance through accelerator input as you near & complete the apex.

    about 5 years ago I looked at a 964 C4 for $10k US... not running, my Porsche mechanic told me to run that there were multiple $2500 sensors on the 4wheel system, had I known about converting it to a 2 wheel drive I would have bought it.

  • @marcryvon

    Even after spending 49K on it, you had your fun building it to your like.
    And now, with all that craze for air cooled Porsches, I'm sure you got your money back and (much) more !!👍
    Too bad it's a right hand drive, thus limiting your market.
    Had it been a leftie, the Yankee market for air cooled ones is absolutely mad since a few years !🤪

    I long for the days where you could buy a 911 for 10k. It's so demoralising growing up always wanting one, and now that I'm in my mid 20s and have a job, they're so far beyond what I can now afford it's just so depressing. For car guys my age, it really feels like we were born 10 years too late. I remember seeing these cars go for peanuts and dreaming about buying one and doing it up. Haha, and now it seems like it'll always remain just a dream.

    • @olibob295
      @olibob295 2 года назад

      @@MrManBuzz obviously not gonna be a 930 or 964 but there's plenty of 996 in decent condition under the 15 grand mark. Could probably get one for 10k if you know where to look and get lucky. It's just the way cars have gone, as soon as they're 25-30 years old cars start rising in price again unfortunately. I know the feeling as I've always wanted a MK2 golf GTi but now I'm in the position to get one all the good ones are 8k+ rather than 2 grand

    • @hunterdubber2915
      @hunterdubber2915 2 года назад +1

      Yes Olibob is right . Relatively speaking , when Jack bought the 964 , they were the 996 of that time , the almost black sheep 911, hence them being 8k upward to 20k for a minter. It has to be said that anyone getting into a nice 996 and keeping it for say ten years , will indeed make a shrewd purchase , although some can't see this yet, those cars will become very sought after and equally collectable. Those in the know are snapping them up already.

    I know what you mean about the 964 as a track car. You should try a 993 which is light years ahead in terms of handling. I have owned a 964 RS (6000km) and a 993RS (26000km) and the 993 RS was vastly superior in every way, both on the road and on the track, although it doesn't look the classic 911 as the 964 does today. As a car I don't regret selling them because they were such poor road cars they rarely got used. Having said that as an investment preposition, well that is another story...

  • @maxagent86

    Nice video, but I am confused. You recommend conversions from C4 to C2, but at the same time discourage track use of 964's and don't like the rear engine/rear biased handling of the car. Wouldn't it be better to keep it as a road going C4, as it was born to be?

    • @teddybass123
      @teddybass123 2 года назад +1

      agreed and there is an obsession with modifications. If you want a C2 it’s best to buy one. As soon as you molest these cars at their current price point they lose value. In a sense when it comes to air cooled porsches maybe leave them the #%€$ alone??!
